A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The Dublin Food Co-op is open every Saturday at Newmarket for organic wholefoods and sustainable household products, plus over a dozen producer stalls offering organic fruit and veg., baked goods, dairy produce, wines, hot and cold food, etc. The Co-op is also open on Thursdays 12:00-20:00.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

A Local History Day is taking place in the Dublin City Library with talks about sacred music, the history of the county of Dublin, a “An 18th Century Gentlewoman’s Guide to Marriage”, Naz i’s in Ireland and popular science in Victorian Dublin. Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale. Every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00 the Jamestown Market is taking place. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on red Luas line.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a relatively new weekly market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. Sounds interesting and I will check it out over the coming weeks. Opoen House 2012 will run from Saturday until Sunday and extends to a long list of venues again (almost 100!). The event is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and the intention is to bring architecture closer to the people. At all tours in different buildings throughout Dublin, you will learn about the architecture of the specific building and about the intentions behind building it in a certain way. All guided tours are easy to understand and suitable for everyone, you don’t have to have a any engineering or architectural background.

Culture Night looks at what happens IN the buildings, Open House looks at the buildings themselves. I love Open House because it allows people to see buildings they don’t normally can’t get into. In previous years I went to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Liberty Hall, the new Court of Crminal Justice, Mansion House and Custom House. This year I will go to Leinster House (Dail) and the Central Bank. Some buildings did require pre-booking, but many are accessible on a first come, first serve basis (expect queues!). Check the list of buildings on the website or pick up a programme in the Tourist Office in Suffolk Street (the former church), where I saw a few hundred brochures earlier in the week.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

The Dublin Simon Community Fun Run (5 miles) will take place this Sat. Participation in the run is not free (EUR 25 if you register on the day), but there will also be a free entertainment programme with Live Music, Children’s Entertainment and food stalls. The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Dux & Co will offer food and the Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

The Occupy Dame Street movement is celebrating their 1st anniversary with protest and discussions. At 12:00 they will meet at the Garden of Remembrance and will march to the Central Bank in Dame Street at 13:00. There will be workshops in the afternoon and music in the evening.

On Sunday Children’s Activities, more workshops and more music will take place and on Monday there will be a noisy protest at 14:00 and then more workshops in the afternoon.

The Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour takes place every Saturday at the Irish Writers’ Centre. It is a free creative writing session that is organised and led by the Centre’s voluntary arts administrators. The hour includes writing exercises and prompts to get ideas flowing. It is open to everyone and is suitable for all levels of experience.

Part of the mainly non-free Hard Working Class Hero Festival, Hudson Taylor will play a free unplugged folk and pop gig.

“Open House 2012: If We Build It They Will Come!” Join artist Mary Noonan in this art workshop for 7-10 year olds looking at public buildings for inspiration to design and build your own mini buidling for the community. Will you design a swimming pool, shopping centre, library or even a museum? This art workshop is free, but booking is required via 01 2225564. When you pre-book, you will need to collect their workshop ticket between 10:00 and 14:30 on the day of the workshop. After 14:30, the tickets will be released again.

Lenny Abrahamson is one of the most interesting of current Irish filmmakers and a director of international acclaim and to celebrate the release of his new film “What Richard Did” on 05 Oct, the IFI presents a (non-free) retrospective of Lenny Abrahamson’s previous work, including a rare opportunity to see his 2007 RTÉ television series “Prosperity”.

Lenny Abrahamson will be in the IFI for a public interview about his work on Sat. The interview will be hosted by Tony Tracy (Lecturer in Film, Huston School of Film and Digital Media, NUI Galway). This is a weekly Saturday night jazz event in the basement Wine Cave of KC Peaches wholefood restaurant/café. Food will be served until 22:00 and wine, minerals & music will be available until later. Admission is free and a donation into a hat at the end of the evening is appreciated.

The Booterstown Winter Bird Walk will take place in the Booterstown Marsh on Sunday. Meet at 10:30 in the car park at
Booterstown DART Station.

Learn about the wintering waders and wildfowl that rely on the marsh and sandflats in the area. This is an annual event organised jointly by DLRCC, BirdWatch Ireland (South Dublin Branch), An Taisce and Friends of Booterstown Marsh.
This is a free event and no booking is required.

Alice Leahy, Co-founder and Director of TRUST, a service for people who are homeless, will speak in the TCD College Chapel on Sun. Her address is part of the Soul Sisters’ series of addresses in which the TCD Chaplain Revd Darren McCallig and a number of invited speakers, will speak about the women who have inspired them.

Alice Leahy will speak about Olivia Hughes, the founder of the Fethard Branch of the United Irishwomen, the forerunner of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association. The address is in the context of the Sunday morning Church of Ireland (Anglican) Choral Eucharist which begins at 10:45. All are welcome and admission is free.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The next Pure Vintage Fair will take place this week and it is what it says on the tin. A market/flea market for vintage items, which will take place on the first Sunday of every month. There will be vintage clothes, furniture, collectibles, jewellery and many more vintage items. Sounds interesting and with 30 stalls, it is well worth a visit. Peter Donegan is a fine landscape gardener and a great guy and he organises lots of activities throughout the year for gardeners and gardening enthusiasts. This weekend, however, he is organising an event for non-gardeners. A scenic cliff walk from Donabate to Portrane will take place. Considered one of Dublin’s most scenic walks, you will be looking out for grey seals, harbour porpoises and, if luck is on your side, perhaps even a dolphin. Good bird activity with gulls, fulmars, guillemots and razorbills is expected so this is certainly one for the bird enthusiasts.

The walk is approximately a 6km round trip and will take in the region of two hours, allowing time to take in the beautiful scenery. Wear comfortable shoes and all-weather clothing. The event is free of charge and places can be reserved by emailing dublinbranch@iwt.ie with your name.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series takes place every week in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. Now in its 36th year, this series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June. The next concert will feature “The Complete Haydn Piano Sonatas IV” with Peter Tuite, piano.

The churches St. Finian’s (Lutheran Church), St. Andrew’s (Prebyterian Church), St. Philip’s, St. James’ and St. Thomas’ (Church of Ireland), Parish of the Assumption (Roman Catholic) got together and in conjunction with the German Embassy invite to a Harvest Festival.

The Thanksgiving Service and Garden Party will start at 12:30 with an Ecumenical Service in the garden of the Embassy, followed by a welcome address by the German Ambassador. Other features will be a BBQ, Bazaar, Live Music, Food Stalls, German Bakery, Books&Clothes, Vegetable Market, Children’s Activities.

The free Build Your Own Monster workshops are brought you free courtesy of Disney to celebrate the launch of their new animated movie Frankenweenie, a film about a young boy who conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog back to life with interesting consequences.
At this workshop, construct your own crazy monster using some batteries, a motor, some wire and watch them race across the ground and spin in circles. This is a fun and exciting way to learn how to use hand tools and find out about how electricity works to create movement.

Only 30 places are available on the Makeshop workshop, which is suitable for children aged 6+. The workshops last 45 minutes and start at 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00. You have to book on the website below.

A Sport & Heritage Cycling Tour is taking place in Phoenix park on Sunday. from 14:00-15:50. Meeting Point is the Papal Cross at 13:45. The cycling tour is free of charge and all are welcome.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The Film Screening “Cé a Chónaigh i mo Theachsa?/Who lived in My House: Castle Ellen” will take place. This film discusses Castle Ellen in Co. Galway the home of Edward Carson’s mother and a place where Carson spent many summers. The film screening is free and all are welcome. Early arrival is recommended as places are limited.

The London Oriana Choir are performing in Dublin on Saturday 06 and Sunday 07 Oct as part of their Autumn tour. They will be singing a programme of British Choral music by composers such as Byrd, Tallis, Stanford, Britten and Purcell. The concert on Saturday will be in the Unitarian Church (19:30) at 112 St. Stephen’s Green and will cost EUR 5 (at the door).

On the Sunday, the performance at 15:00 in the St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral will be free.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

The next Sunday Sketching for 7+ Year olds has the title “Looking at Architecture!”. No booking necessary. Admission is free and early arrival is recommended.

Saucy Sundays is a weekly free live music afternoon and evening in the Grand Social. This week’s line up is Tarantella Fall, Jean Harnett, The Late Twos, Big Priest, Casino Nova, Dem Fools, Lisa Mc Laughlin.

This is the first meeting of Exchange Words, a new scriptwriting (film and theatre) group. A safe space where writers and actors can come together to collaborate, create and have fun. It will feature drama games, writing discussion and script readthroughs. Writers can bring a few copies of script, 1-4 pages in length, for the actors to perform as part of the workshop. The workshop is free and open to all.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Mass invites to a Gospel Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street every Sunday at 19:30.

Exchange Focus is a collective photography group. They act as a forum and meeting point for Dublin photographers to share techniques and collaborate on projects and they regularly exhibit their work and run free workshops in all aspects of photography. The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

A series of four screenings of Argentinian Films will take place on the next four Wednesdays. The launch event will be on Wed 10 Oct and will start at 18:00. This will be followed by the screening of the first film. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles and admission is free.
The Instituto Cervantes says that Argentinian films are considered the most developed productions of Latin American cinema, followed by Mexican and Brazilian and that the films produced in Argentina during the 20th century became one of the most important ambassadors of the Spanish language all over the world.

The Alliance Francaise is hosting a Legal French Evening. This year’s presentation will be given by Marie-Luce Paris, Academic Co-Director of International Relations for the UCD School of Law, with a focus on European human rights law. A student lock-in in the Jervis Street Shopping Centre on Wed with the band Bipolar Empire and a Silent Disco. The purpose of the event is to get students to buy in the shopping centre, so the shops will be open and there will be discounts. And the first 150 students that present a receipt from jervis Shops over EUR 35 get free entry to the “Official Lock-In Afterparty” at Anthem in Andrew’s Lane Theatre. Entry to the Lock-in with valid student card.

Frances Fitzgerald TD (Minister for Children and Youth Affairs) and Independent Senator Jillian Van Turnhout (former Chief Executive of the Children’s Rights Alliance) will present the contents of the Children’s Referendum, followed by Q&A from the audience.

The event takes place in the Jonathan Swift Theatre in the TCD Arts Block and is organised by Trinity Young Fine Gael. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Wow, that is a heavily political topic, I know and usually I draw the line at extreme political opinions left or right of the spectrum and I wasn’t too sure if I should include this event. But I decided to include it as a once-off, because I am of the opinion that you need to know and hear both sides before you make an informed decision.

The first of the 2012 Conversations about Ana rchism will take place in the Seomra Spraoi Social Centre. The event is a is a friendly discussion based sessions designed for people who are new or fairly new to anarchismand want a chance to ask and hear answered some basic questions. It’s open to anyone with an interest in finding out more about anar chism
This first session gives an introduction and answers the important rudimentary questions.

“The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 every Wednesday.

“The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week.

Bad Boy Jake, a band from Dublin that draws influences from all over the music spectrum including Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, Deep Purple, blues rock and classic rock, is playing every Wednesday in Mother Reilly’s.

Traditional Irish Music Session in Hedigan’s (The Brian Boru) in Phibsborough from 21:30 every Wednesday. If you play an instrument you are especially welcome (all levels are welcome).

In politics, sortition (also known as allotment or the drawing of lots) is the selection of decision makers by lottery. The decision-makers are chosen as a random sample from a larger pool of candidates. In ancient Athenian democracy, sortition was the primary method for appointing officials, and its use was widely regarded as a principal characteristic of democracy. The randomly-selected jury remains widely regarded as a model of bringing ordinary people together to make vital public decisions; as a result, there are now many proposals to use the lottery as a democratic institution more expansively.

This 1.5-day workshop will consider the lottery as a democratic institution.

The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Café and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.

The Book Launch for ‘We Have a Good Time, Don’t We?’ by Maeve Higgins will take place in the Gutter Bookshop. Admission is free.

Coming Out Day is an international event which gives LGBT people the opportunity to be themselves. It also raises awareness of the LGBT community and LGBT rights movement.

To mark Coming Out Day, the NLGF and Rainbow Europe will screen “Trans-Action” – a documentary movie about Anna Grodzka, who was born in a male body and decided to finally begin her life as a woman only in her 50s. Currently Anna Grodzka is the only transgender MP in the world. The screening will be in Polish with English subtitles.
