Hi all!
Hurray, another bank holiday weekend. I love these Mondays off and would take a few more if I could. :-) Traditionally there is not too much happening in Dublin on the August bank holiday, but this year it is busy enough, so have a look through this long newsletter and find a few events that appeal to you. If you can’t find anything at all, then …. look again and try something new.
[ad]
I will be in Co Clare this weekend to celebrate Lindsay and Mary’s YES to each other. Congrats! So you have Dublin to yourself. :-) A number of events are happening that I would definitely go to, like the Zombie walk and the fireworks in Bray and the Americana and Roots Festival in Greystones, but I haven’t found a way to be in two places at the same time, so I will let you explore all these things and maybe tell me about it if you feel like it. (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
Most of you know that I spent many hours writing and researching this weekly newsletter/e-zine, but I enjoy lots of other things as well and one of them is singing in an Elvis Tribute Band. Not as Elvis, I hasten to add, but just in the backing choir. In two weeks time on 17 August we will be in the Olympia Theatre for a gig and tickets are selling like mad. It is still 2 weeks and more than 400 tickets have been sold, I was told. It is Elvis Presley’s 35th Anniversary and if you are interested or know somebody who might be interested in Elvis Presley tell them about it. By the looks of it, this gig will sell out. Because of the cost we have to pay, it can’t be free, but you will have a 22 people band and choir performing on stage for you and all is fronted by Kevin Doyle, the best Elvis Tribute performer. Check it out here if you are interested: www.olympia.ie/whats-on/elvis-35th-anniversary-starring-kevin-doyle/
So, now the regular appeal: Help me with some donations to cover the EUR 170 per month that it costs me to send the newsletter to more than 11,000 people. A new month has started and a new bill has arrived. Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm
And if you can’t help with a doantion, I need you to help spreading the word! Tell your friends about the Dublin Event Guide and suggest to them that they subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or on the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide People can (and should) also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on the Facebook Page. The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
This week’s Feel Good vibe is a simple little quote from Steve Maraboli, who is not even too well known. But he was right when he said:
“You are a beautiful creation…perfectly imperfect… a work in progress… you have everything you need to fulfill your purpose… don’t dilute yourself for any person or any reason… you are enough…be unapologetically you.”
What do you think, should we sometimes remind ourselves a bit more of that? If you like it, write it down or print it out and read it every day.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Tracey O’C and Elaine B were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide by supporting it with a donation. Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter has more than doubled and I need your help! Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and help!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need to “find” EUR 170 per month to cover the cost and anything above will be invested in improving the Dublin Event Guide!).
BTW: If you see advertisement in the Dublin Event Guide and think that should pay loads, then I need to explain that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So use the ad links EVERY time you want to purchase something.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
This week, I will let you have your own look. It is a bank holiday weekend, take your time and browse through all these events. It is fun! :-) But if you can’t decide at all where to go to, then have a look at the Zombie Walk on Saturday and find time for the Shakespeare performance in Iveagh Garden and if you like Fireworks, go to Bray on Sunday.
With Children, go to Farmleigh House and don’t forget that the Northside Music Festival starts on Monday.
Enjoy the weekend and I promise you there will be more free events again next week! :-)

Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens
Free Shakespeare In The Park will be back! Last year it was Romeo & Juliet and I absolutely loved the performance and this year it is “The Tempest” by Shakespeare. Fortune’s Fool Productions are the production company behind it. This is not the same company as last year, but the key people are still the same. The performances take place on the big green in Iveagh Gardens (access from Harcourt Street) and are all unplugged and without lighting. Bring your blanket (and umbrella) and enjoy culture in its purest form.
Starring Tim Casey as Prospero, Roisin O’Donovan as Miranda and Val O’Donnell as Alonso and directed by Stephanie Courtney, I am convinced that they will impress again. I will definitely go next week and am already looking forward to it.
Shows will start at 19:00 on weeknights and at 15:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. The performances will run from 03-12 August all is free and no booking required. www.facebook.com/Fortunes.Fool.Productions

New Guidelines for Street Performers
A code for Street performers and Buskers has been compiled for Dublin City with some significant changes to the previous arrangements. The code is not a rule book or a law (most newspapers got that completely wrong!), …but if you break the code, you will be “subjected to legal enforcement”. Not VERY voluntary then!? It (allegedly) has been put together by the Street Performers themselves, but it smells a little emore of traders trying to quiet down/shut up street performers.
Some big changes are that there will be quite a lot of amp free zones where amplification is not allowed. Drums are also not allowed anymore! Performers have to keep a distance of 50 metres, which means a max of 8 performers in Grafton Street. And they are not allowed to sell CDs anymore!!
This will impact a lot of bands and performers. The Riptide Movement, for example, only became so well known because they tirelessly performed in the streets of Dublin and successfully sold their CD. Their music, requires a certain amount of amplification and drums and selling the CD was important to create awareness. Another regular busker in Grafton Street plays electrical guitar and creates amazing pieces of music with a loop machine. He can’t perform anymore in any amp free zone. It will also impact Street Performers of the acrobatic/juggling type who use an amp to amplify their voice when talking.
And some nonsense in it: You have to have 20 songs, but you are only allowed to play for 1 hour at a place. So unless your songs are all shorter than 3 minutes you will never get to play all the songs.
So there are some aspects that make sense, but all in all, I think the new code will do more damage than good. The Appendix of the new Code is here www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/Events/Documents/TheStreetPerformersCode.pdf but I wasn’t able to find the full document. And I am also curious about who was involved compiling this code. Was it REALLY a group of Street Performers? And what or who made them the representatives of all other Street Performers and Buskers? If you know who was involved, please let me know (dublineventguide@gmail.com). www.dublincity.ie/Press/PressReleases/PR0712/Pages/NewpilotstreetperformancecodeforDublin.aspx

Dublin Bike Scheme will get significant expansion
The Dublin Bike Scheme continues to be successful and break all the records and now Dublin City has committed to expand the scheme significantly. Brilliant news! Over the next three years the number of bikes will grow from 500 to 1,500 and the number of bike stands will be more than doubled from currently 44 spots to 100. The expansion will initially expand to Heuston Station and to the Docklands but there are plans to increase the number of bikes even to 5,000 and thenumber of bike stations to 300 in a 5-year expansion plan. So all good news! www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2012/0730/1224321085831.html

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Bright Sparks – Sand Sculptures
10:00 – 18:00, Sat 04 Aug
Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2
Every year since 2002, the Irish Sand Scultping Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving takes place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. If my memory is right, in previous years four sculptures were created, but this year the team seems to have lost a member and will create therfore three sculptures. “Bright Spark” is the title of the exhibition and it is inspired by the innovations of Irish scientists. www.irish-sand.com

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 04 Aug
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 05 Aug
varies
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Mars…here we come!
06:31, Mon 06 Aug
Far, far away!
This is not an event in Greater Dublin, but it is sooo exciting and interesting that I need to tell you about it. And since most of you are off due to the bank holiday, maybe you want to observe it.
On Monday morning at 06:31 the landing of the Mars Science Laboratory “Curiosity” on Mars will take place. The descent takes 7 minutes, but interestingly the signal from Mars to Earth takes 14 minutes! And if you want to find out lots of other intriguing facts about the amazing procedure of the landing process, have a look at the video “Seven Minutes of Terror” about the landing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki_Af_o9Q9s On Monday morning you can watch the live coverage on Mars on NASA TV: www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/ and even more information about the Mars Science Laboratory en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Science_Laboratory Thanks to Astronomy Ireland ( www.astronomy.ie), I found this information in their newsletter.

Bank Holiday Monday
09:00, Mon 06 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The August Bank Holiday is for many an opportunity to leave the country or leave Dublin. I expet it will be one of the busiest weekends at Dublin airport AND on the streets of Ireland. In Dublin nearly all shops will be open and it is business as usual (on a normal Sunday). Usually there are less events taking place than on other weekends because event organisers are afraid they lose too many visitors to the Bank Holiday Exodus. If you drive in Dublin, be aware that Bus Lanes and Loading Bays are in operation (because it is Monday), but Pay & Display Parking is not enforced on a Bank Holiday, so you can park for free.

Dublin Green Watch Workshop
14:00 – 16:00, Tue 07 Aug
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
This workshop is for Ages 12-15. – Everybody knows how important it is to reduce the amount of energy we use and the amount of waste we produce. Even if you’re doing your very best, how do you keep track of how much energy everybody else is using? What about office buildings that leave their lights on all night? Buses idling with their engines on? Does your school leave windows open when they have the heating on? And how do we highlight positive things like recycling drives, car-boot sales and repair workshops?
The Dublin Green Watch workshop in the Science Gallery will help with these questions and will turn you, the citizen, into a sensor and create a dynamic green map of Dublin. Admission to this event is free, but booking is essential.

Green Drinks Dublin – Fracking
18:30, Tue 07 Aug
Messrs Maguire, 2 Burgh Quay, Dublin 2
The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) continues to bring you Dublin Green Drinks on the first Tuesday of every month in Messrs Maguire. Green Drinks is a monthly event in 711 cities around the world to bring people with an interest in green issues together. At this month’s Dublin event, Ineke Scholte and Geraldine Ring talk about fracking – what it is, how it affects you and the anti-fracking campaign. Find out about the Irish situation, how we fit into Europe & how you can have your say. And just to give you a rough idea about the topic: Fracking is a method for extracting oil and natural gas from rock layers.
Meet up on the top floor of Messrs Maguire. Doors open at 18:30 and the talk is at 19:00. Admission is free, but you are asked to indicate your attendance either on Facebook of through an email to dublinbranch@iwt.ie

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) is inviting to a public talk by Haneen Zoabi MK, a Palestinian member of the Israeli Parliament. The ISPC explains: “This is a rare opportunity to find out directly from a public representative in the Israeli parliament how the self proclaimed “only democracy in the Middle East” truly functions. It promises to be an informative and eye-opening experience, and will give you an opportunity to learn about issues relating to both the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the continuing erosion of democratic freedoms inside Israel, including the crackdown on the work of domestic and international NGOs.”

Dublin Green Watch Workshop
17:00 – 19:00, Wed 08 Aug
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
This workshop is for professionals. – “While everybody knows the importance of reducing energy consumption and waste, there is a huge gap between theory and practice. Wasteful behaviour such as lights on at night in office buildings, buses idling or windows opened in heated buildings are common, much of which can be, and is, observed by citizens. Conversely, a number of green initiatives (car-boot sales, repair workshops) go unnoticed, but could have broader positive impact with more publicity.
The Dublin Green Watch workshop invites designers, programmers, environmentalists, activists and engineers to investigate how the power of the crowd can be exploited to signal wasteful practices and highlight green initiatives, turning citizens into sensors to create a dynamic green map of Dublin and creating the impetus for a greener Dublin.”
Admission is free, but booking (on the Science Gallery website) is essential.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Public support for Sean Quinn – How odd is that?
Sean Quinn was born into a simple and not at all rich family. He then worked hard in the quarry and cement business and made money. The insurance business and property investment turned him into one of the or even THE richest man in Ireland … and then all collapsed. Now he owes around EUR 2.5bn and the bank wants their money back. Sounds familiar? Well, maybe the “size” of the problem is different, but many people in Ireland invested and lost and now owe lots of money to a bank. The difference to Sean Quinn, apart from the amount? He destroyed his company by taking questionable loans from that company. He took a super dodgy loan from a bank to buy shares of this bank. He tried to make the rules instead of living by the rules by buying 25% of that bank. He managed to get property to the value of mill ions in safety so that the same bank can’t get their hands on it, when the tower of Babylon came tumbling down. And now he gets 30,000 per MONTH for himself and his family for their living expenses. Poor guy!
He tried, did well, then turned dodgy and now feels cheated out of wealth and luxury because the debts are called back. The courts decided that he and his deals were SOOO dodgy that his son and his nephew were sent to prison for contempt of court (the nephew ran away and is in Northern Ireland and can’t be put behind bars, but that’s another juicy story).
That’s a very high level overview and you probably read/heard about it. The odd thing about all that is that about 4000 people went on the street in Cavan to support him. (www.rte.ie/news/2012/0729/sean-quinn-anglo.html) – and that Michael O’Leary from Ryanair wrote a letter of support.
You can be super dodgy and the country folk in your home county will still support you!? How odd is that? What strange and twisted logic drives people to support a dodgy speculator who does everything to interfere with the law, but when it comes to real injustice they stay at home? Or has anybody experienced any other protest marchin Cavan recently?
Or is it only GAA supporters that are that strange as this article suggests:
www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2012/0730/breaking11.html
By the way, I don’t think people should be happy about his misfortune or should throw stones at him. He did the best he could (must do better next time!) and then turned desperate and now deserves the appropriate treatment the law has planned for him. But I totally don’t get why 4000 people would support him publicly. Oh, and in case you thought it doesn’t affect you, or if you think the poor guy who created so many jobs in his insurance out of the goodness of his heart deserves all the support, read this: www.rte.ie/news/2012/0731/quinn-insurance-administration-could-cost-1-6bn.html If you have a home or car insurance, YOU will pay for him screwing up and taking money from his company to cover his debts for the next 12, maybe even 20 years!!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
