Hi all!
Dublin is going mad this weekend! In a good way, I’d say! There are sooo many free events and it is a pity that they are not a little better coordinated because my prediction is that next weekend will be really quiet again. This week you can choose between the Tall Ship Festival, the Merrion Square Open Day, Kings of Concrete, the Northside Music Festival, the Blackrock Family & Jazz Festival, Down with Jazz in Temple Bar, the Kilmainham Arts Festival and the Dalkey Lobster Festival and on top of that there is another weekend of the Heritage Week. Mad, don’t you agree? ;-) Was there somebody who said Dublin doesn’t offer any good events??? Send him/her to me!
[ad]
Dublin City is the main organiser of the Tall Ship Festival and they have decided to merge the last event of the Northside Festival and the Kings of Concrete Festival with the Tall Ship Festival. A pity, if you ask me, because they could have been self standing events at another weekend, but I can understand why they did it.
However one thing I can never understand: Around St. Patrick’s Day I explained why the ridiculous estimate of 500,000 people watching the parade is total nonsense (There were less than 250k people.). This week you will hear another nonsensical “estimate” repeated left, right and centre: There will NOT be 1,000,000 of people attending the Tall Ship Festival! The Aviva Stadium/Landsdown Road has a capacity of 50,000 people. So TWENTY times that amount is allegedly coming to the 4km long quays? No chance. My estimate is that the total over the four days is closer to 400,000 than to 1mio. Still lots of people! :-)
Last week some little hiccups kept me from putting more than just one picture on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide so I will try to improve on that this weekend! Check it out over the weekend! :-)
Thanks for the donations. This month it is looking as if I will just reach the amount I am paying out every month. That is good news! We are not there yet, so please keep helping: If you can help with a donation, go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm You can subscribe for EUR 12 per year or just give any amount as a donation.
If you can’t help, you will still get the Dublin Event Guide every week, but I need you then to help spreading the word! Tell your friends about the Dublin Event Guide and suggest to them that they subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or on the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide People can (and should) also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on the Facebook Page. Have you done it? Click on LIKE at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
We are more than 9600 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Only 400 more until we reach 10,000! Can we do that in 4 weeks? Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
This week’s feel good message is a bit of a nudge. A nudge that will get you to feel good about yourself when you take it to heart. It is a quote from Anthony Robbins’ book “Awaken the Giant Within” on Page 24. A brilliant book that you can buy here if you are interested: www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9780743409384?a_aid=dubevg
?”If you raise your standards but don’t really believe you can meet them, you’ve already sabotaged yourself. You won’t even try; you’ll be lacking the sense of certainty that allows you to tap the deepest capacity that’s within you… Our beliefs are like unquestioned commands, telling us how things are, what’s possible and impossible and what we can and can not do. They shape every action, every thought and every feeling that we experience. As a result, changing our belief systems is central to making any real and lasting change in our lives.”
I was at an amazing Anthony Robbins event in Rimini last year and in October he will be in London for the National Achievers Conference. Last year he was talking for 4 hours at that event and it was the reason why I went to Rimini afterwards. Donald Trump will be at that event as well this year and if you are interested you can book tickets here: www.amiando.com/e/vkogap There is a special offer available at the moment for just GBP 77 for three days of National Achievers Conference. Best price ever!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Sophie L, Katie G, Ciaran O’C and Vick R were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide by supporting it with a donation. Thanks!! Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter has more than doubled and I need your help! Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and help!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need to “find” EUR 170 per month to cover the cost and anything above will be invested in improving the Dublin Event Guide!).
BTW: If you see advertisement in the Dublin Event Guide and think that should pay loads, then I need to explain that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So use the ad links EVERY time you want to purchase something.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
My plans for last weekend didn’t really work out so I will have to do better this week! ;-)
I will probably start already tonight and go to the Tall Ship Festival a bit later. Tomorrow (Saturday) I will be at the Tall Ship Festival again and also at the Merrion Square Open Day. If you have never been in No. 29 the Georgian House at Merrion Square, you should definitely consider it! And in the evening on Saturday you will find me at Down with Jazz in Temple Bar.
I am still a little undecided what to do on Sunday. Kings of Concrete, MakeShop of the Science Gallery, Down with Jazz and the Tall Ship Festival are the maybes and knowing me, I will probably try them all. ;-)
Next week? The Volunteer Recruitment Fair on Thursday sounds interesting. Not because I am looking for somewhere to volunteer, my time budget is filled to the max, but maybe it would be something for you?

Creative Writing Holiday on Inishbofin
13-18 September
Writing Train and Yvonne Cullen are organising the 9th Inishbofin Jaunt, a creative writing holiday on Inishbofin in the middle of September. It is a total immersion in writing, commencing with a one-day kickstart course, you’ll have access to a total of four days of classes and workshops with Yvonne on this holiday, all arranged around walks, swims, bike rides, meals, impromptu discussions and readings of the work-in-progress. Yvonne’s love for the island and the peacefulness that allows you to let your creativity go wild brings her back again and again to that island together with her students. “I couldn’t have asked for a more generous, inspiring or devoted teacher” says Helena Nolan, winner of the 2011 Patrick Kavanagh Poetry award. And another studen said “You wove a web of magic around us all!”
Yvonne has one place on that course reserved for a reader from the Dublin Event Guide. The prize is worth an impressive EUR 290 (!!) and you will have to do a little bit of work for it. The closing date is Wed 29 Aug and you will have to send a mail to Yvonne at yvonnesworkshops@gmail.com with your name and your contact details. In addition you will have to answer the following question in your mail: “What does Inishbofin mean in English?” (I would check on Wikipedia! ;-) ) and you also have to send Yvonne 40 words or less on why you’d like to win this prize. (Yvonne will assist the prizewinner in organising their accommodation on the island.) And if you want to read about previous trips to Inishbofin and other courses provided, then check yvonnecullen.wordpress.com/

Joyce Tower and Museum to re-open in Sandycove
The Joyce Tower and Museum in Sandycove (just next to Dun Laoghaire) will re-open with the help of local volunteers. It had been closed for a while (even on Blooms Day!) due to staffing issues and now talks are taking place between Failte Ireland and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council about the possibility of the council to take over the running of the museum. More than 100 locals have been found who are willing to help and the museum will now be open between 10:00 and 18:00 every day until the end of September. www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/joyce-tower-and-museum-to-reopen-563665.html

Echinacea and the Irish Medicine Board
Don’t read this if you are allergic to opinions concerning Alternative Health! This small article is only for people that are interested in Alternative Health:
Last week the Irish Medicine Board have announced that Echinacea an herbal preparation that is very popular in the alternative health world as a means to strenghten your immunity system, should not be given to children under 12 years anymore. (www.thejournal.ie/echinacea-shouldnt-be-given-to-children-under-12-says-medicines-board-565259-Aug2012/) Based on studies the IMB claims to have assessed, they say there are more risks than benefits. It is not a ban, but in essence the IMB has demanded that Echinacea products for children will be removed from shelves. Considering the long long list of side effects other medicines come with, this decision raised a lot of discussions and caused some confusion. In case you used it before and are now confused about what to do, you might be interested in a statement of one of the manufacturers of Echincae for children: www.avogel.co.uk/blog/2012/08/echinaforce-for-children-under-12/

National Museum Events
The National Museum is doing a really great job in running lots of free events in their three Dublin branches for children and adults and I regularly list them here individually. Due to the large amount of other events, I won’t be able to list them one by one as there are even more events on in the museums for Heritage Week. For that reason, please check the museum events at www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx From next week I will do my best again to include National Museum events!

Playground 78
South Great George’s Street and its extension, Aungier Street, seems to be the area with the most restaurant/shop openings (and closings) per year. A busy area for new starts and dashed hopes and there are at least another 3 openings coming up in the next few weeks/months.
Only very recently Playground78 opened. During the day it is a café/coffee shop and in the evening it is transformed into a party venue/private members club with pool tables, table fussball, board games, pacman, space invaders etc. Interesting and very unusual concept. On Sat 25 Aug the official opening, entitled “Prohibition”, will take place with cabaret acts, burlesque performers and Charleston dancers and all guests have to stick to the strict 1920s dress code. The event, however is by invitation only (remember it is a private club at night). Check out the Facebook Page if you are interested. There are indications that a few invitations COULD be available at the Launch Party Pre-Drinks (19:00-22:00) in the Bagots & Hutton Wine Bar in South William Street, but you better check all the (scarce) details on the Facebook Page. www.facebook.com/playground78

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Hidden Treasure is an exhibition by the members of the artistic collective Art House. The artists were intrigued by the hidden treasure of St. Mary’s Abbey despite being in the middle of the city. The Abbey is a stony retreat situated underground and in comparison to its original scale in the 12th century, the Abbey is now an inconspicuous feature of central Dublin. The artists are Ian Nolan, Ruth Kerr, Steph Gallagher.

Heritage Week
09:00, Fri 24 Aug

The National Heritage Week is full of amazing and interesting events. There are medieval fairs, night time bat walks, classical music, poetry, theatre, traditional music, storytelling, historical re-enactments, local history walks and talks, maritime and coastal events, food fairs, traditional skills workshops and archaeological digs. There’s something for everyone and most events are free.
Whether it is nature and wildlife, folklore, or built heritage, National Heritage Week aims to deliver messages and events that are positive, engaging and relevant in people’s day to day lives. Any person or organisation can actively take part in the Week and organise an event which educates people and promotes an aspect of Ireland’s Heritage.
Many attractions across Dublin are hosting Heritage Week events across the National Heritage Week such as National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History, National Museum of Ireland – Natural History, Natural Museum of Ireland – Archeology, Chester Beatty Library, National Botanic Gardens.
The National Heritage Weeks will run from Sat 18 Aug until Sun 26 Aug. I will include a number of events here, but it is just not possible to include all events. There are about 400 (!!) events in the Dublin City area only! So you have to check the website for all details.

Heritage Week
09:00, Sat 25 Aug
Dublin (various locations)

Bright Sparks – Sand Sculptures
10:00 – 18:00, Sat 25 Aug
Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2
Every year since 2002, the Irish Sand Sculpting Team “Duthain Dealbh” is creating a sand sculpture exhibition in the courtyard of Dublin Castle. The sand sculpting team has 7 days to create the sculptures out of 80 tonnes of sand and after that the sculptures will be on show for another month. The carving took place from 30 July – 05 Aug and the exhibition runs from 06 Aug-02 Sept. The sculptures are truly impressive and I strongly recommend that you have a look when you are in town. If my memory is right, in previous years four sculptures were created, but this year the team seems to have lost a member and will create therefore three sculptures. “Bright Spark” is the title of the exhibition and it is inspired by the innovations of Irish scientists. www.irish-sand.com

National Potato Day
10:00 – 17:00, Sat 25 Aug
North Wall Quay, Dublin 1
Yes, you did read right, a “National Potato Day”! But it is as official and created for the same reasons as Guinness’ Arthur’s Day: The National Potato Day is a (clever) promotional idea of the Keogh Family, a large scale potato farm in North Dublin. In order to breath some new life into a decreasing potato market, the Keogh Family will try to encourage everybody to rediscover their love for potatoes and they are bringing a taste of their farm and all its spud specialties from Oldtown, North County Dublin to the north quays of the River Liffey. A complete marquee dedicated to the spud will be in place during the Tall Ships Races 2012 from 23-26 Aug.
Everyone who visits the marquee can enjoy all aspects of the spud including some free samples of Keogh’s crisps and potato goodies. There will also be demonstrations on how versatile the spud is with nutritional information, quirky recipes and many more spud surprises.
I was at last year’s Potato Day “celebrations” in Merrion Square and the day had not yet inspired the masses to come out to the event, but at Bloom in the Park in Phoenix Park, earlier this year, the Keogh Crisps and microwaveable potato bags were quite popular. This year’s decision to join the festivities around the Tall Ship Races will probably give them the visitor numbers (and more) they are hoping for.

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 25 Aug
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Teddy Bears’ Picnic
13:00 – 17:00, Sat 25 Aug
Blackrock Park, Rock Road, Blackrock, Co. Dublin
It is expected that this will be Ireland’s biggest Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Bring your bears, blankets and picnic and join the many people, young and old in Blackrock Park. Doctor Ted and the Teddy Bears Hospital will be in the Park for minor repairs and health checks. There will also be a DJ, face painting, bouncy castles and inflatable games for all ages, entertainment on the Lake Stage, a “make & do” area and picnic facilities with lots of goodies.
The Teddy Bears Picnic is a free event, organised by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown (DLR) and everyone should bring a Teddy Bear to get into the picnic and partake in the event. The DLR sports department will run plenty of games to try and lots of fun in the park with running, jumping and throwing. Last year thousands of people and teddy bears of all shapes and sizes attended this largest Teddy Bears’ Picnic in Ireland.
The Teddy Bears Picnic is nicely integrated into a whole weekend of festivities in Blackrock, the Blackrock Family & Jazz Festival. Find out about further events later on Saturday and on Sunday here in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).

Down with Jazz – Festival
19:30, Sat 25 Aug
Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
In 1934 a campaign against Jazz music in Ireland was busy fighting against this terrible foreign noise and the organisers of this event, the Improvised Music Company, cleverly picked it up as a theme for their festival. Down with Jazz” is a 3-day Jazz Festival on Meeting House Square in Temple Bar and it is all free (but ticketed).
The line-up on Friday is The Swoo–Beh Project, Freefall, 3G, Jaime Nancy & The Blue Boys, Oko
On Saturday (from 19:30) the performers are Leafzang, Phisqa, Freefall, Christine Tobin, Umbra, Mixtapes from the Underground.
On Sunday (14:00-20:00) the line-up is Rhombus, Redivider, Buckley Standard Time, Sweeney’s Jazzmen, Max Zazka’s Groove, Hot House Big Band.
All tickets have been snapped up, so it is “sold” out. However, with sooo many events taking place this weekend and because possibly some people might either just come to Down with Jazz for a while or might have other plans, I expect that there is a possibility that even without a ticket you can get access. It is difficult to run an event like that: On one hand you can’t hand out more tickets than there is room, on the other hand you can’t ensure that all people will come and will stay. My recommendation? If you are passionate about the event but couldn’t get a ticket, give it a go. Go to the Meeting House Square and hope for the best. But importantly, don’t get upset if you can’t get in. There is a chance but no guarantee. The organisers are trying their best to find a good solution for everyone, but it is the first year for this festival so there is no experience with it yet.

Bright Sparks – Sand Sculptures
10:00 – 18:00, Sun 26 Aug

Down with Jazz – Festival
14:00 – 20:00, Sun 26 Aug

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 26 Aug
varies
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

New Number Plates needed according to car industry
Sometimes you read something in the newspaper and you have to read it twice because it is soo unbelievable. An article in the Independent today was one of these situations. ….and I still can’t believe it!
The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) is discussing a new number plate system with the government. The article starts explaining that this is because of the superstition that is connected to the number 13 and because they expect that people will not buy cars next year so that they won’t have to drive around with the number 13. But then it continues to explain that we should have TWO number plates every year so that a car that is bought in July can show that it is newer than a car that is bought in January.
I don’t get it on two counts! Let’s assume somebody is superstitious. What will he or she do next year? Hibernate for 12 months? Or maybe just get on with it. If he/she hibernates he/she will not buy a car anyway. If he/she gets on with it and just deals with the fact that years are counted in numbers, then the number 13 shouldn’t be a problem.
The other issues is equally intriguing. If I would plan to buy a car, I would check when that car was registered first, The car registration documents clearly state that and no number plate is required to state it.
Actually I have an even better idea! Get rid of the year on the number plate completely like it is the case in most countries in the world. Having a year there brings no advantage it only puts some people under more psychological pressure because of the “shame” of having an old car.
Oh and the third shocking thing about this article? That the government is talking to the gombeens from SIMI about this ridiculous idea!

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
