Hi all!

Big celebration at the Dublin Event Guide HQ and hopefully ;-) in 10,000+ homes and offices. :-D This week’s “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” is No 260 and that means today is the 5th Birthday of the Dublin Event Guide! FIVE years!! And to celebrate I have a surprise and present for you: Welcome to the new, all shiny and pretty looking and much easier readable and navigate-able “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”! What better week to launch the new layout, colour scheme and logo than the 5th Birthday!?

When I sent the first mail to 10 friends in June 2007, I didn’t expect that I would still do it week after week five years later or that my (still!) one-man produced e-zine would reach nearly 11,000 people. I also had not expected the positive reaction I get from many of you week after week. Every e-mail from you is appreciated, every donation is needed and your “Thanks!” is the fuel that keeps me going.

All this positive vibes are also picked up by event organisers and by recently also by other companies. Of them, is the Irish specialist for Web Application Design “iQ Content” and the wonderful team of people at iQ Content helped me with this wonderful and cool new layout and identity. And you will hear more about the hard work of iQ Content very vey soon! Let’s send a huge Thank You to iQ Content!

For people that don’t like change too much, let me assure you that one thing has not changed: The content is as good as always! :-)

A migration like that is a big operation, because there are lots of changes in the background as well. One of them is that from this week I will use a new Email Service Provider, but hopefully that will not affect the deliverability of the newsletter. The old one was great but wouldn’t allow the sending of the new formatted mail, so I had to change to an – unfortunately – more expensive one. The cost have doubled now. You know where this is going? You are right! I need your help at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

One small possible downside: If you STILL read the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” in normal text format, you will now see an Event Guide that looks worse than before. Apologies! But maybe try out the nicer looking and properly formatted new Dublin Event Guide and leave text format behind you. The new layout is MUCH easier to use!

Oh and one last thing: There might still be some small hiccups, so if something is not fully working yet, be a little patient, but tell me about it! I will definitely look into it to make sure that all bugs will be ironed out.

You now have an even better reason to tell your friends about the new shiny “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Get your friends and colleagues to subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or they can go to www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (Click on “Join Email List” on the right.) In addition you can tell the world by printing this poster and hanging it up in your gym, work place, local supermarket etc. www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf And I promise that I will update the poster soon too! Thanks!

We are more than 8600 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide With your help, we will make it to 10,000 in no time! Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!

If you will live for 80 years, you will have a total of 29,200 days. Once they are gone, they are gone! That makes these 29,200 days extremely precious. The coming week will cost you 7 of these days, will you exchange them for the best return you can get? You can do what you want with these 7 days. You can waste them or use them for the best. Are you doing that? Watch this and ask yourself: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEa0xpWi7C4

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Patricia O’N and Ryan M were the wonderful and helping people who supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter has more than doubled and I need your help! Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm and help!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)

BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

In the last 12 months the following wonderful people have sponsored this Dublin Event Guide: Ellen M, Gerard C, Laura G, Fergus G, Emma S, Tara R, Karen L, Catherine T., Rainey D-G, Sally P, Johan S, Lorraine F, Eimear MacH, Elzbieta D, Monika E, Tracey OC, Julia Sch., Isabelle F, Barry P, Alan G, Gerard Ph, Irial G, Louise M, Milena V, Fanny T, Clodagh O’C, Fiona F, Yvonne S, Loretta K, Lauren O’R, Charles C, Caoimhe L, Adrian Ph, Sandi C, Elva O’G, Sally Ph, Thomas D, Emilie Ch, Hans Martin W, Eamonn O’R, Patrick O’C, Eamonn U, Fiona O’R, Louise B, Serena F, Paul M, Louise F, Colin D, Philip McK, Catherine E, Mélanie B, Irene H, Jo H, Ronan K, Clodagh O’C, Alison P, Claire H, Brian L, Therese O’R, Sean S, Zelie McG, Christian K, Esme E, Vincent R, Sophie P, Tom B, Barbara Q-B, Joan S, Catherine E, Deirdre I, Donna M, Conor R, Tom McM, Anna F, Corina R, Maite L-Sch, Aine C, Justin McC, Paul A, Enrique P, Kiera M, Sinead D and Sarah C, Anto K, A C, Lorraine M, Nikodem R, Stefanie N, Emma L, Brendan M, Margaret B, Karen D, Clare D, Paula R, Selina McC, Darragh D, Marta T, Rebecca T, Celina N, Caroline K, Nicola R, Brendan M, Carmel M, Wanda J, Clodagh C, Martin O’S, Orla K, Franziska B, Pawel B, Rosemarie L, Aisling S, Clodagh O’C, Aine G, Pauline R, Patricia O’N, Ryan M and www.GravitationalFX.ie (An Irish Web Design, SEO and Internet Marketing who offer affordable web design.), www.FlamencoIndalo.com (A group that supports and promotes the art of Flamenco in Ireland.), www.oliviercornetgallery.com (A brand new Art Gallery in Temple Bar.), www.thepaulkanegallery.com (A great Art Gallery, on the search for a new gallery venue.) and www.a1computers.ie in Dun Laoghaire/Cabinteely (The Computer Repair Company that fixes Computers, Laptops, Phones and Internet problems fast. Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

One event you should definitely consider this weekend, is the Shakespeare Festival. There are lots and lots of free performances of all types part of this festival and if you have the slightest interest in Literature or Theatre, don’t miss this festival.

On Saturday the Clontarf Viking Festival is the place to go – if the sky ever stops pouring down on us. And if you are more for indoor stuff, then have a look at the Eat My Shorts Short Film Festival.

If you have kids, the Ruaille Buaille Children’s Music Festival in Lucan is a great event to go to.

On Sunday you will find me at the Fusion Sundays Market. I missed it last month, so hopefully I will get there this month. And as always in the evening I will be at the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass (despite the fac that it takes place at the same time as the first Irish Euro 2012 game).

On Tuesday “Ulysses Rapped” sounds intriguing, but it is in the middle of the day. “The Winner Effect” book launch in the evening would be more my thing.

Finally, on Thursday, the talk about Charles Darwin (Science and Reiligion) caught my eye and I would be interested to go to it, if I had the time. Thursday is Event Guide night, so I try to keep the night free.

Bloomsday Survival Kit – Competition

Three long-term Dublin Event Guide readers put their heads together and created a Bloomsday Survival Kit, which is lovingly crafted to help you romp through Ulyssean Dublin on 16 June. It suggests who, what, when, where, why and how to create your own adventure on Bloomsday and let me quote the creators “the kit comprises The Bloomsday Manual, action prompts and equipment. Ladies find out where to flash a leg or snap your garter. Gentlemen know where you can pop your rocket. Great quotes to impress or shock your companions.”
Until the 16 June you can get your Bloomsday Survival Kit for EUR 16 from the James Joyce Centre in North Great Georges Street; the 3rd Policeman in Rathmines Road Lower or from Monte-Cristo in the Powerscourt Town Centre. In addition there will be some pop-up stores and you can find them on www.bloomsdaysurvivalkit.com/thekit.htm
In addition and in connection with it, there will be a Bloomsday Survival Kit Exhibition from Fri 08 June at The Bald Barista, 55 Aungier Street, Dublin 2.
The Survival Kit creators gave me one kit for a competition among the Event Guide readers and if you want to win that kit (Please Note that you might have to collect it in a City Centre location before 16 June!), send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with SURVIVAL in the subject line and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 14:00 on Monday 11 June. www.bloomsdaysurvivalkit.com

Dublin news

EURO 2012

Prepare for weeks of madness, well at least 9 days in a worst case scenario. The European Football Championship “Euro 2012” starts this Friday 08 June and will continue until 01 July. It will take place in Poland and in the Ukraine and all this is NO news to you if you are a football fan. If you are not, however, then brace yourself! It will be three tough weeks OR three blissful weeks, during which you can get a LOT of “Me!”-time. For the people in between, just enjoy the time. The games with Irish involvement will take place on 10, 14, and 18 June. After that? Hmmm, serious fans probably hope that the Irish team will be in the final in 01 July. People whose enthusiasm has been weakened by realism, expect an earlier exit. Could the game on the 18 June already be the last one? We will find out!
The three initial games will take place on a Sunday, Thursday and Monday, all at 19:45. Expect pubs to burst out of their seams. The main support event will be organised by the mobile phone company “Three”, who are the official supporter of the Irish Football Team, and it will take place at George’s Dock, IFSC where a big screen will let around 5000 fans watch the game. (2000 premium tickets were allocated, but you are still invited to come to George’s Dock. The festivities start at 17:00 and the sooner you are there, the better your chances are to a) get in and b) get a good place. Between 17:00 and 19:45 there are different activities and even some freebies. If it rains, rain ponchos will be provided, so all eventualities are considered. Check www.facebook.com/3Ireland
If you want to follow the proceedings from an Irish point of view, check out www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/euro-2012 or www.irishtimes.com/sports/euro2012 or any of the other many many websites that provide special coverage.

Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens – Funding Appeal

Last year’s production of Romeo & Juliet (Unplugged) was a huge success. It was performed in Iveagh Gardens and in Ranelagh Gardens and more than 3000 people saw this free performance. Fortune’s Fool Productions, run by Stephanie Courtney, the director and producer of last year’s Romeo & Juliet (Unplugged) have decided to produce another of Shakespeare’s play as a free event and so this year “The Tempest” will be performed in the Iveagh Gardens from 01-12 Aug. The Dublin Event Guide will support and promote this event so that this time a lot more than 3000 people will attend. The production is unplugged, with no sound system, no lights, no microphones, no electricity, but for costumes and props and to print fliers and programmes money is needed nevertheless. For that reason Fortune’s Fool Productions is looking for funding through the crowd funding site fundit.ie. If you can help to get this project off the ground, go to www.fundit.ie/project/funders/the-tempest-free-shakespeare-in-dublin to help.

Lots of non-free festivals

A whole range of non-free festivals is taking place in the coming weeks. Some of them require the purchase of tickets, but for relatively low prices. So if there is an area you are interested in, you should check it out. Just search for the title in Google to find more details. This list is not complete, but some of the festivals are
+ John Ford Ireland Symposium 2012 from 07-10 June
+ Live at Leopardstown 2012 from 08 June -16 August
+ Indian Film Festival of Ireland from 08-11 June
+ The Dublin James Joyce Festival from 11-23 June
+ KBC Great Music in Irish Houses Festival from 12-17 June
+ Taste of Dublin from 14-17 June
+ Dalkey Book Festival from 15-17 June
+ Arcadia Festival in Bray from 08-17 June

International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin

From 10-17 the International Eucharistic Congress will take place in Dublin. It is the 80th anniversary of the previous Eucharistic Congress in Dublin, which took place in 1932. At the time Ireland was VERY catholic and the city was PACKED with people.
You can find a picture from a mass on O’Connell Bridge here multitext.ucc.ie/viewgallery/1208 The Eucharistic Congress today is taking place in a completely different environment and it will be a significantly smaller event. Nevertheless, the final mass will take place in Croke Park on 17 Jun. Until then, the events will take place in the RDS and in a number of churches. All details can be found on www.iec2012.ie/ The event is not free, not even the final mass, but there will be a few thousand people coming to Dublin for it and you might encounter people, flags or events.

Finances and Future of Ireland

A lot is written about the economic situation. Mostly there is hidden agenda behind the reports. It is really hard to find neutral information. I didn’t succeed in finding neutral information, but I found a blog post, that describes the situation and the future in very clear terms and you might not agree with that opinion, but I think you should definitely read it. Be warned, it is not for the weak hearted. namawinelake.wordpress.com/2012/06/03/having-our-cake-and-eating-it/

Dublin Shakespeare Festival

06-16 June: Throughout Dublin City
The Trinity College Dublin Shakespeare Festival, which is now entering its fourth year, is the largest outdoor theatre festival in the Ireland with approximately 400 performers in over 50 outdoor performances. Performances take place in spots as attractive as the Iveagh Gardens, as busy as Temple Bar and as calm as St. Stephen’s Green and are all brought to life by dedicated and enthusiastic performers.
In the context of the festival there will also be choral performances, circus acts, film screenings, public lectures, food and drink tasting and comedy performances. It is a brilliant festival with soooo many events. Each performance and event will be announced by the eccentric and comical Town Criers. These actors, students from the college in elaborate costume, will also show audiences how to get to each venue using Shakespearean language and song.
Most events are free and if you check the website here www.dublinshakespeare.com/timetable/ you will see all the events and only a few (the non-free ones) have “Book Now” behind them. So, spend a bit of time checking the website and looking for the events that suit you in time and location and then make sure that you give Shakespeare a chance this summer! You have 11 days to enjoy it. www.dublinshakespeare.com

Opportunities

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

CLIMATE. CULTURE. CHANGE. – CULTIVATE

19:00, Tue 12 Jun

Filmbase, Curved Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

Climate.Culture.Change is a series of provocative films and discussions which highlight the social dimension of climate change. Designed to challenge, illuminate and inspire, the series presents a panorama of interconnections from the causes of climate change to the roles of individuals and societies in addressing the issues. The films in Climate.Culture.Change are from six European countries giving an international perspective on the issues around climate change.
On Tuesday the last film will be “Just Do It” by Emily James (88 Min, UK, 2011)
“Just Do It lifts the lid on climate activism and tells the story of people standing up for what they believe in. Documented over a year, Emily James’ film follows a group of environmental activists as they blockade factories, occupy coal power stations and glue themselves to the trading floors of international banks despite the very real threat of arrest. Articulate, funny and engaging, the ensemble cast care passionately about the environment on a global level, but work locally, with courage, determination and manners to take a stand.
The film screening is followed by a panel discussion with experts:
Christopher Hird (one of the leading figures in UK documentaries)
Molly Walsh (Policy and Campaigns Manager with Friends of the Earth Ireland, she is active in Stop Climate Chaos and has been involved in direct action.)
Barry McCarron (one of 15 Irish climate advocates in a British Council programme)
The full programme of all films is listed on the website. Admission is free, but booking is required via bookings@cultivate.ie

This is odd

Garlic vs Apartments – Prison for TD Wallace??

Do you remember the big news in March of this year? A food importer had imported garlic (which has a ridiculously high import tax) and declared it as apples. He did that for four years and the fraud allowed him to avoid EUR 1.4mio in VAT. Since 2007 he had paid back half of it, but his case was in front of a court now and he was put in prison for six (!!) years. jrnl.ie/379395 Can’t see that making it easier for him to get pay the rest back. In my opinion this verdict is crazy. Sure he should be penalised for his fraud, but six years of prison sentence is just madness.

Fast forward to 08 June 2012. Just 3 months later. Same country. Similar fraud. The elected parliament member TD Mick Wallace was found to have avoided a significant amount of VAT. We don’t know how much, but we know that he agreed to a settlement with the Revenue Commission for a 2.1mio underpayment of VAT over a 2 year period. Wallace is unlike the garlic importer Begley not prepared to pay anything back because his company is insolvent. In an interview he even claimed that he did not break the law, but his company did. Dohhh! This man is a member of the Irish parliament and neither the left wing group he belongs to, nor the Taoiseach is demanding his resignation. They all say it was wrong, but blabber on about it being the decision of the people who elected him, if he should resign or not. jrnl.ie/478230 Should Wallace not be throw into prison too? Maybe for longer than 6 years? If 700k are equivalent to 3 years, then he should get 9 years? No, I don’t think that would be just, but many (including me) would find it just if he was kicked out of the Dail IMMEDIATELY!
