Hi all!

Explanation:
Today I nearly lost the will to live! I was a bit surprised that last week’s process of using the new layout etc went so smooth. But since then I encountered some more challenges and this week, it hit me badly. Not only were there a lot more events than in most weeks (more than 140!), in addition I ran into technical problems. So, by now I am working for 26 hours nonstop (!!) on this Dublin Event Guide and I can’t wait to get it out. I know that it will come too late for many of you and I apologise for it! I had not planned it like this!

Thanks a lot for all the good wishes for the 5th Birthday of the Dublin Event Guide and for the nice comments about the brand new pretty look and feel of this weekly newsletter/e-zine. I really appreciate all your comments and agree with the people who told me that they will now even more than ever before will promote and suggest the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” to their friends. You should definitely do that! Tell everybody about it!

And there is something else I need your help with: It is a normal thing that some people subscribe to a newsletter, read it for a while, then only read it occasionally and then nearly forget about it until something triggers their interest again. In the same way, there are friends and colleagues of yours that didn’t see the nice new layout yet, because they received but didn’t open last week’s e-zine. So, this is where you come in: Tell your friends, even if you know that they get the Dublin Event Guide already, about the new look & feel. Ask them what they think about it or even better tell them how cool you think it is! ;-) So in other words, help me to re-introduce some of the lapsed Event Guide readers to the weekly newsletter!

Thanks for your help! :-)

By, the way, I have been told that the links at the top of the page don’t currently work for some people who use Gmail and we will look into that! Thanks for letting me know! If you find any other problems, let me know about them as well.

Unfortunately I need to ask you again to either help with your donation or to buy plentifully through the links that are in the e-zine or on the website. Don’t buy anything you don’t need or want, but if you want to buy books check out the banners in the e-zine and if you want to buy stuff from Groupon etc, check out the banners on the website! ;-) The simplest way is a donation, or even better a subscription, here www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm The new Email Service Provider costs twice as much than the previous one. So I need to find approx. EUR 170 per month to cover all the cost!

I know that I have to re-do the Tear-off poster that I suggest you hang up in your gym, office notice board etc, but I won’t get a chance to do that this week, so feel free to use the old one still. No matter what you do, just keep telling your friends about the new “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. They can subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or on www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (Click on “Join Email List” at the top.) The poster to hang up in your gym, work place, local supermarket etc. is here www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf Thanks!

We are more than 8700 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide With your help, we will make it to 10,000 in no time! Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!

For this week’s Feel Good Message I found a video clip on You Tube that is packed with inspirational or thought provoking quotes. There are toooo many quotes in the clip, so I suggest you write down all or some of the ones that you like, that say something to you. From that list, pick one or two and remind yourself again and again throughout the week of your selected quotes. Then in a week select the next one(s). www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ2ZNoP4d-I

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Niamh S. and Leslie C. were the two wonderful people that gave a birthday present to the Dublin Event Guide by supporting it with a donation. Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter has more than doubled and I need your help! Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm and help!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)

BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down

The themes this weekend is Bike or James Joyce and next week the main event is on Thursday the love:live music festival.

The Dublin Bike Week is starting on Saturday and I plan to go to Yestival, the Bike festival in Fade Street. Also on Saturday is Bloomsday, which means that all the Joyceans will be going mad (in a good way, I hope!). I will stay a bit away from them, but it will be nearly impossible to avoid them completely. :-)

On Sunday Streetfeast is taking place, an initiative that entices you to meet your neighbours and have lunch with them.

And then on Thursday the main event is love:live music, a full day of a huge amount of free music events. Check the events out, there are too many to see a good few of them, but try to catch at least one. :-)

Also have a look at the Dublin Biennial Pop-up exhibition, a Contemporary Art Exhibition which will launch this weekend and will run until 24 June.

Bloomsday Survival Kit – Competition

Three long-term Dublin Event Guide readers put their heads together and created a Bloomsday Survival Kit, which is lovingly crafted to help you romp through Ulyssean Dublin on 16 June. It suggests who, what, when, where, why and how to create your own adventure on Bloomsday and let me quote the creators “the kit comprises The Bloomsday Manual, action prompts and equipment. Ladies find out where to flash a leg or snap your garter. Gentlemen know where you can pop your rocket. Great quotes to impress or shock your companions.”

Until the 16 June you can get your Bloomsday Survival Kit for EUR 16 from the James Joyce Centre in North Great Georges Street; the 3rd Policeman in Rathmines Road Lower or from Monte-Cristo in the Powerscourt Town Centre. In addition there will be some pop-up stores and you can find them on www.bloomsdaysurvivalkit.com/thekit.htm

In addition and in connection with it, there will be a Bloomsday Survival Kit Exhibition from Fri 08 June at The Bald Barista, 55 Aungier Street, Dublin 2.

The Survival Kit that I was given for a competition will go to the lucky winner, Suzanne Kelly. www.bloomsdaysurvivalkit.com

More competitions

There are a few competitions in the pipeline, so there will be more next week, but if you know someone who would like to get the word out about a product they are selling, put them in contact with me. Ticket competitions are great, but it would be nice to have a few more product competitions too. You can reach me on dublineventguide@gmail.com

National Bike Week 2012

16 June – 24 June
Bike Week is an initiative of the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport to raise the profile of cycling and to encourage more people to take up this healthy, cheap and environmentally friendly way of making shorter trips. Events will be taking place from 16-24 June and all events are free.

Bike Week events include a cycling themed street party “Yestival!” on Dublin’s Fade Street on 16 June, a lunchtime cycle on Wednesday 20 June, a night-time summer solstice cycle from Dundalk to Dublin on 21 June, Cycle to Work day and many more events all round the country. The closing event for Bike Week 2012 is a day of family cycling fun in the Phoenix Park on 24 June, with a 42km cycle on and off road from the Park for the more active family members. All Bike Week events in Dublin are here bikeweek.ie/sites/default/files/Dublin%20Bike%20Week%202012%20All%20Events.pdf

There are also a number of events taking place in Dun Laoghaire. One of them is “Pedal in the Park”, a 4 mile cycle along the River Greenway in Marlay Park on Sat 23 June (15:00). You are invited to take part, but Dun Laoghaire wants you to register via 01-2047026.

Shakespeare in Iveagh Gardens – Funding Appeal

Only 9 days to go and the event is still a good bit away from the funding target, so I will mention it once again:
Last year’s production of Romeo & Juliet (Unplugged) was a huge success. It was performed in Iveagh Gardens and in Ranelagh Gardens and more than 3000 people saw this free performance. Fortune’s Fool Productions, run by Stephanie Courtney, the director and producer of last year’s Romeo & Juliet (Unplugged) have decided to produce another of Shakespeare’s play as a free event and so this year “The Tempest” will be performed in the Iveagh Gardens from 01-12 Aug. The Dublin Event Guide will support and promote this event so that this time a lot more than 3000 people will attend. The production is unplugged, with no sound system, no lights, no microphones, no electricity, but for costumes and props and to print fliers and programmes money is needed nevertheless. For that reason Fortune’s Fool Productions is looking for funding through the crowd funding site fundit.ie. If you can help to get this project off the ground, go to www.fundit.ie/project/funders/the-tempest-free-shakespeare-in-dublin to help.

Opportunities

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Dublin Biennial Pop-Up

15-24 June – 12:00-20:00 – Entrance from Sheriff Street Upper, Dublin 1 close to the junction with East Wall Road
The Dublin Biennial POP-UP, is an International Contemporary Art Exhibition featuring 55 International and National Artists. The Exhibition will be showcased at The Point Village and will run from 15-24 June. Through an open submission call, Artists worldwide were invited to participate in this Inaugural Dublin Pop Up Biennial. The 55 International Artists exhibiting represent 20 countries, Austria, Armenia, Brazil, Croatia, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Holland, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the USA.
Among the International artists participating will be Yoko Ono (USA) and Brazilian Artist Christina Oiticica. Yoko Ono will present her “Wish Tree For Ireland” installation along with a video. The “Wish Tree For Ireland” is an invitation to all, to place personal wishes on her tree during the exhibition. The wises are then transferred to the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER in Iceland, and will become part of her 1,000,000 wishes project.
Brazilian Artist Christina Oiticica – is known for her ‘non-concretist’ Land-Eco art technique of combining paintings with the earth and the elements. Using the earth as foundation matter, Oiticica ‘buries’ her work in the earth for up to a year – the paintings, when unearthed, reveal the indelible marks contributed by nature to her works. She has buried her canvases in the Amazon rain forest of Brazil, the Sacred Valley of Ganespurs in India and along the route to Santiago de Compostela. Ms. Oiticica will install “Heart of the Earth”, a site specific piece for The Dublin Biennial.
The Dublin Biennial is co-hosted with Sol Art Gallery and will be housed at the Point Village, in a 10,000 sq. foot space donated by Point Village Property.
In addition to the Gallery space, the Biennial will present Film Screenings at the Odeon Cinema Point Village along with daily performances and discussion groups in the ‘POP-UP’ performance space in the Gallery.
The Exhibition is open daily from 12-8pm and admission is free.
All events are listed in the programme here www.dublinbiennial.com/files/dib_conversations-events.pdf www.dublinbiennial.com

Bloomsday

09:00, Sat 16 Jun

Dublin (various locations)

Bloomsday is an odd day that triggers vastly different reactions. For Joyceans (fans of James Joyce, a group of literature lovers that is not necessarily growing significantly) it is the most important day of the year. For the rest, i.e. the large majority of people that are not really too much into Joyce and his books, this day leaves them completely cold and indifferent. However, the minority is much louder than the silent majority and celebrates the day with lots of events.

Bloomsday is anything but a “historic day”, instead it describes a day in the life of Leopold Bloom, a fictional character from Joyce’s novel “Ulysses”. The activities on the day retrace Bloom’s movement on that day (16 June) in 1904 as described in the novel. Nothing of the things people re-enact today has happened in reality.

Instead a few Joyce or Ulysses fans went on that pilgrimage around Dublin the first time in 1954 and since then the James Joyce Centre has been the main promoter of the events.

The day involves a range of activities including Ulysses readings and dramatisations, pub crawls, Bloomsday breakfasts and other events. Enthusiasts often dress in Edwardian costume to celebrate Bloomsday and retrace Bloom’s route around Dublin.

Bloomsday in Dun Laoghaire

09:01, Sat 16 Jun

Dun Laoghaire (various locations)

The list of Bloomsday events in Dun Laoghaire, Glasthule and Sandycove is as long as my arm and I can’t list all the events here, so instead I will point you in the right direction to where you should go find out all details. Not all events are free and unfortunately the charges are not specified, but to find the events list go to

Le Voyage Dans La Lune – Film Screening

13:10, Mon 18 Jun

Irish Film Institute, 6 Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

The Let’s French Festival is taking place from 18-27 June and this screening is part of the festival: The innovative 1902 silent film “Le Voyage Dans La Lune” by Georges Méliès was the first science-fiction movie and used ingenious special effects to re-create a fantastical trip to the moon and back.

With that version of the film fully restored and for the first time in color, Air’s Nicolas Godin & Jean-Benoît Dunckel were asked to write a new, modern score and decided to expand their composition for the original 16-minute film into a full-length album, also titled Le Voyage Dans La Lune.

This is a free but ticketed event. Tickets must be collected from the IFI Box Office when visiting.

Griffith Conference Centre, Griffith College Dublin, South Circular Road, Dublin 8

Doubt, worry and fear are the dragons we all face from time to time. For some of us they never go away; they overshadow our lives, stopping us from moving forward or enjoying the present. Is it possible to free our minds from these three dragons forever?

That’s the promise of this lyrical and persuasive new self-help title by Anthony Strano, who has 30 years experience of helping people live happier, more fulfilled lives. Anthony presents his original approach, based on the principles of Raja Yoga meditation. His book Slaying the 3 Dragons and the enclosed CD, ‘8 Principles of Spiritual Well-being’, make traditional ideas accessible to modern readers, and contain new ways to achieve wellness in mind, body, and spirit. Anthony, born in Australia of Italian parents, co-ordinates the Brahma Kumaris centres in Greece, Hungary and Turkey and travels internationally conducting lectures, workshops and seminars. The festival lasts for one day only and lots of events will take place on that day. I always find it is a pity that love:live music takes place on a Thursday, because as a consequence the vast majority of people miss this great event or just get a chance to enjoy ONE single event.

All details about the different events are on the website below and I will also list a random selection here.

Layered Salad!? What a lazy invention!

Last week I was in a super market and saw a “layered salad”. Now I am living long enough in Ireland to have heard about layered salads, but I never thought much about it. But this time it really stopped me in my tracks. Who would come up with the idea to sell a layered salad? Maybe someone who was too lazy to mix it? Or what other reason would there not to mix the ingredients in a salad bowl? If I didn’t want them to touch each other, I would buy them/prepare them separate from each other. Once the ingredients are in the same bowl, I might as well mix them. Don’t you agree? So, WHY did anybody develop a layered salad as a self-standing concept? I guess the first person making it, thought “If I have to mix the ingredients that will at least take me another 3 minutes. NO way I am doing that, I will just sell it like that and give it a name that sounds fancy.” I find this VERY odd! ;-) www.kraftrecipes.com/recipes/classic-layered-salad-106311.aspx

On Thursday – at the summer solstice – the summer starts! Aehemm! Did someone tell the weather gods? I hope they will get their act together from next week. This weekend was meant to be the weekend of the Street Performance World Championship as it had been announced last year. The event has been postponed to the weekend of 21+22 July, so let’s hope in July the sun is frazzling down on us. ;-)

Have an event-ful weekend,

Take care,
