You saw in last week’s e-zine that I had some challenges to overcome to get the e-mail out to you. In the end, I managed to sort everything out, but it was 22:00 when the mail went out and that certainly had not been the plan. Nevertheless I am glad that many many of you didn’t let that stop you from reading the Event Guide or parts of it! Thanks for not giving up on me! ;-)
I did expect some hiccups as part of the migration to the new layout because for me, it comes with a quite different procedure of compiling the Dublin Event Guide. I am working on it and am trying to get used to it as fast as possible and this week, I already started working on the e-zine on Monday to avoid another late sending. Keep your fingers crossed and continue with your support for and patience with me.
Only two weeks ago the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” had its 5th birthday and today we have reached another milestone together. With your tremendous help by spreading the word, we are now more than 11,000 readers! Great stuff! :-)
Since last week’s newsletter was delivered soo late and this week’s will hopefully earlier, I will mention again that there is something I need your help with: Some of your friends who are already subscribers to the Event Guide for a while might not check it every week, because the old layout didn’t appeal to them. So it might take a while until the see the nice new layout. Help them! Tell your friends, even if you know that they get the Dublin Event Guide already, about the new look & feel. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
Many of you know that I am involved with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, where I look after all technology and after the sound engineering every week at the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass from September to June. Last week was the last Gospel Choir Mass before the summer break and you will unfortunately have to wait until mid-September until you can enjoy the brilliant Choir again. One thing that differentiates us from many other choirs is that we interpret “Gospel” quite loosely and our songs include many pop songs as long as they contain a good message. At last Sundays mass, the choir sang – for the first time! – a Michael Jackson song and for me it was the first time that I listened to the words conscientiously. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend I will try to go to the Dublin Biennial Pop-Up exhibition before it closes on Sunday and I will also try to see the Dublin Sketchers exhibition in Dun Laoghaire. And there is a third exhibition. Unless the Instrumental Art exhibition in Stephen’s Green will be extended, this weekend is the last chance. Sounds busy already and I am only starting.
The Philippine Day on Sat in Phoenix Park sounds interesting, but I expect that the Garden Squares Day in the City Centre will win. If you have never been, go to No 29, the Georgian House that is a museum at Merrion Square. Tours are free on Saturday. A whole range of other walking tours are on offer as well.
The People’s Art Exhibition around St. Stephen’s Green is taking place on Sat and on Sun, so I will put that on my list for Sunday. The new exhibition at the Science Gallery is open on Sat and Sun as well, but luckily it will stay open until September, so you can postpone that a bit, but don’t forget it!!
Also on Sunday are a number of closing events for the Bike Week. I don’t plan to take part, but if the weather is ok, I might go to the Pedal in the Park event in Phoenix Park. For kids, the Mini Olympics in Cabinteely sounds cool too. But I will give that a miss.
On Monday the screening of the film “Climate Change: Impact in Spain” interests me and throughout the week there are lots of talks and documentary screenings in the National Gallery as well.

Dublin Cycling Campaign Conference
Fri 22 June – Trinity College
National Bike Week takes place in June and the Dublin Cycling Campaign organised a one day conference on Fri 22 June entitled “Growing Cycling Participation and Closing the Gender Gap” in Trinity College. www.dublincycling.ie/conference2012 .
The tickets for the conference were EUR 100 (including lunch) (concessions: EUR 20) and the Dublin Cycling Campaign has made two tickets available for a competition in the Dublin Event Guide. The winner is Monica Harasimiuk. Congrats!

White Collar Boxing for Down Syndrome Dublin
Sat 23 June: 19:30
Mick Dowling, Olympic Boxer, Trainer and Television Commentator and Down Syndrome Dublin are hosting a White Collar Boxing Night in support of services for children with Down Syndrome. There will be 15 bouts of boxing, ranging from white collar, via exhibition, to competitive boxing and will feature both male and female boxers. Tickets cost EUR 15 and are available from www.dsdublin.ie/boxing

Restaurant News
Joe Macken, the owner of Jo’Burger and a whole range of other restaurants (Crackbird, Bear, Skinflint (is that still open??)) is riding on the crest of success and has opened another restaurant. After Burger, Chicken, Beef and Pizza, he didn’t move on to Fish or Pork to cover all bases, instead he went back to the roots and the new restaurant is another Jo’Burger. The place was previously the “Old Bistro” and is located at 4-5 Castle Market, Dublin 2. Castle Market is the street that brings you from South William Street directly to the entrance of the George’s Street Arcade. Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) is a very short stone throw away, so the competition will be heating up. www.joburger.ie
Another new restaurant that opened only recently is Aussie BBQ, not far from the Bernard Shaw Pub in South Richmond Street (slightly hidden, next to some middle eastern food shops). It does exactly what it says on the tin: Aussie BBQ! At the weekend they are open until 05:00, so we can guess the target market. For the rest of the time, I hope that the off-beat location won’t cause a problem to the place. www.aussiebbq.ie
And I heard about a third new restaurant, but don’t know any details. Maybe someone can help me. It is a new place in Sth Great George’s Street or near there and is called “Grüb” or something similar?

Origin Green – Sustainability Initiative with beautiful Ireland video
Bord Bia, the Irish food board, has launched a campaign encouraging food and drink manufacturers to “engage with the challenges of sustainability” and to join an environmentally friendly charter called “Origin Green”, that requires its members to reduce energy inputs, minimise overall carbon footprint and lessen the impact on the environment in order to increase efficiency and competitiveness.
The campaign will be promoted with a 4min video clip about Ireland’s nature and its natural resources. Actress Saoirse Ronan is acting in the clip and did the voice over (she worked for free on it) and I have to say, I was impressed by the “Origin Green – Working with Nature” promo video. Summer of Heritage – Dun Laoghaire
Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council will run their ‘Summer of Heritage’ programme again this year throughout the summer. In its fifth year, Summer of Heritage (Wed 17 June – Sun 02 Sept). will again attract thousands of visitors to many of the top heritage sites in the county. This year the programme has been further expanded and features tours of the Seapoint Martello tower (a stunningly restored example of these 19th century defensive forts, built during the Napoleonic wars) and tours of the Celtic Oratory in Dún Laoghaire. There will also be tours of Kill Abbey (one of the oldest churches in Dublin, dating back to the 10th century), walking tours of old Dundrum, taking in the Castle and St. Nahi’s church; walking tours along ‘The Metals’ (a historic pathway that linked the quarry in Dalkey to the harbour in Dún Laoghaire). Carrickbrennan graveyard (resting place of many sailors lost in maritime disasters since the 17th century). features and so does the Dún Laoghaire Memorials Tour, tours of the Obelisk in Stillorgan and Deansgrange Cemetry. All of the tours will be conducted by qualified guides and admission is free. Tours will take place from 27 June – 02 September on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Ryanair in take over bid for Aer Lingus
Around 2006/2007 Ryanair bought 29.8% of Aer Lingus shares and now Ryanair made a take over offer for Aer Lingus valuing the company at approx EUR 694 mio. There is no doubt, Michael O’Leary is a very very smart business man, but I can’t see ANYTHING positive in Aer Lingus being swallowed Ryanair. The airfares are already a good bit higher than they were before and if Aer Lingus disappeared, Ryanair would increase them further and further. I’d say most of us have a love-hate relationship with Ryanair, they have done a tremendous service to travellers with their original low price bus-trip approach to air travel, but at the same time they have a total disregard for their customers and I would dare the guess that more than 90% of people travelling with Ryanair would prefer not to if they had an alternative. Aer Lingus has reduced prices, but is still an inflexible dinosaur and needs Ryanair on their heels and Ryanair needs Aer Lingus to take at least some business away from them, otherwise Michael O’Leary would get an even bigger head. So, let’s hope that Aer Lingus will continue to compete and that the shareholders will stop Ryanair.

Dublin Biennial Pop-Up
15-24 June – 12:00-20:00 – Entrance from Sheriff Street Upper, Dublin 1 close to the junction with East Wall Road
The Dublin Biennial POP-UP, is an International Contemporary Art Exhibition featuring 55 International and National Artists. The Exhibition will be showcased at The Point Village and will run from 15-24 June. Through an open submission call, Artists worldwide were invited to participate in this Inaugural Dublin Pop Up Biennial. The 55 International Artists exhibiting represent 20 countries, Austria, Armenia, Brazil, Croatia, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Holland, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the USA.
Among the International artists participating will be Yoko Ono (USA) and Brazilian Artist Christina Oiticica. Yoko Ono will present her “Wish Tree For Ireland” installation along with a video. The “Wish Tree For Ireland” is an invitation to all, to place personal wishes on her tree during the exhibition. The wises are then transferred to the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER in Iceland, and will become part of her 1,000,000 wishes project.
Brazilian Artist Christina Oiticica – is known for her ‘non-concretist’ Land-Eco art technique of combining paintings with the earth and the elements. Using the earth as foundation matter, Oiticica ‘buries’ her work in the earth for up to a year – the paintings, when unearthed, reveal the indelible marks contributed by nature to her works. She has buried her canvases in the Amazon rain forest of Brazil, the Sacred Valley of Ganespurs in India and along the route to Santiago de Compostela. Ms. Oiticica will install “Heart of the Earth”, a site specific piece for The Dublin Biennial.
The Dublin Biennial is co-hosted with Sol Art Gallery and will be housed at the Point Village, in a 10,000 sq. foot space donated by Point Village Property.
In addition to the Gallery space, the Biennial will present Film Screenings at the Odeon Cinema Point Village along with daily performances and discussion groups in the ‘POP-UP’ performance space in the Gallery.
The Exhibition is open daily from 12-8pm and admission is free.

Instrumental Art Exhibition

St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre (Top Floor), Dublin 2
The Instrumental Art Exhibition in Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre consists of more than 100 instruments that were turned into art by artists based in Ireland. Mostly guitars, you can see really great paintings and art work on the bodies of the instruments and it is well worth seeing that exhibition. There is hope that the run will be extended, but the official closing is on Sunday at 18:00 and to be on the safe side in case the organisers, the Musical Youth Foundation, were not able to negotiate an extension, you better go there before Sunday evening. I entirely enjoyed the exhibition and will probably go again this weekend. The Big Ga y Wedding Project is a photographic exhibition that features a year of Irish Civil Partnerships. The purpose of the exhibition is to raise funds and awareness for Marriage Equality. Photographer Shawna Scott launching her her fundraising photographic exhibition in the week of Dublin Pride (June 22-30, 2012). The project saw Shawna photograph seven very unique same-seks (just replace the “ks” with an “x” and we have outplayed the spam filters) civil partnership ceremonies throughout 2011. I like art and I appreciate art, but I think I am quite simple when it comes to art. I understand what looks nice for me and what doesn’t, but I guess I am too simple for sophisticated descriptions of art.
The Blue Leaf Gallery is curently showing “Eureka!” and I am sure it is an interesting exhibition, but don’t ask me to explain it you because the discription is out of my league:
“‘Eureka’ at Dublin’s Blue Leaf Gallery, is a meditation on the light and dark sides of discovery and revelation in science and technology as explored through the eyes of a select group of two Irish and ten American contemporary and emerging artists.”

People’s Art Exhibition

Four times this year the “People’s Art 2012? exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green. If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions. Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free. Specific start and end times are not defined, but exhibition space has to be occupied by 11:00, so 11:00 is the latest start time. The event runs from Friday until Sunday, but Sat+Sun will most likely be the main days. The June exhibition is the second this year and you see a wide range of paintings and other “hangable” art for sale.
People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

The Ferocious Mingle Market

The Ferocious Mingle Market takes place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Café and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.
The location of the new indoor market is 72 Thomas Street (between the Vicar St venue & Cafe Notto) an opening hours are 11:00-18:00. There is also a Café, the Oscar Verne Café, open for business at the market.

“Sketched OUT/Drawn IN” – Dublin Sketchers Exhibition

The Dublin Sketchers group are presenting an exhibition of their work in the Drawing Room in Dun Laoghaire, hosted by IADT. During a busy year the Dublin Sketchers have been tracing the city, with pencils and paints, seeking out subjects, scurrying from rain, basking in light and they have created “Sketching Out and Drawing In”. The exhibition will open on Fri 22 June from 18:00-20:30 and will also open on Sat 23 and Sun 24 June from 11:00-18:00.
The exhibition presents sketches, drawings, notebooks and other art works created on the weekly Sunday explorations of Dublin by 40 Sketchers and over the weekend, there will be a live drawing event as well.

James Chandler is the director of the Franke Institute for the Humanities and holds the Barbara E. & Richard J. Franke Professorship in English Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. He is the author of two books on English Romanticism: Wordsworth’s Second Nature (1994) and England in 1819: The Politics of Literary Culture and the Case of Romantic Historicism. His discourse is organised in conjunction with the Eighteenth-Century Ireland Society Conference (2012)

The Dublin Garden Squares Day is a yearly event to celebrate the urban historic green squares in the heart of Dublin City. People’s Art Exhibition

Four times this year the “People’s Art 2012? exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green. If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions. Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free. Specific start and end times are not defined, but exhibition space has to be occupied by 11:00, so 11:00 is the latest start time. The event runs from Friday until Sunday, but Sat+Sun will most likely be the main days. The June exhibition is the second this year and you see a wide range of paintings and other “hangable” art for sale.
People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. On Saturday a fun family cycle will take place along the new Slang River Greenway in Ballinteer starting at Marlay Park near the College Road entrance. This event is suitable for all ages but is particularly targeted at families. The Slang River Greenway is a new walking and cycling route between Marlay Park and Sandyford Road in Dundrum with most of the route traffic free. The cycle will leave Marlay Park at 15:00 and continue across Grange Road through Marlay Grange, Hillview Grove, Wyckam Grove and returning back to Marlay Park for refreshments. The Dublin Sketchers group are presenting an exhibition of their work in the Drawing Room in Dun Laoghaire, hosted by IADT. During a busy year the Dublin Sketchers have been tracing the city, with pencils and paints, seeking out subjects, scurrying from rain, basking in light and they have created “Sketching Out and Drawing In”. The exhibition will open on Fri 22 June from 18:00-20:30 and will also open on Sat 23 and Sun 24 June from 11:00-18:00.
The exhibition presents sketches, drawings, notebooks and other art works created on the weekly Sunday explorations of Dublin by 40 Sketchers and over the weekend, there will be a live drawing event as well.

Green Loop Cycle – Bike Week Event

At 11:00 the Green Loop Cycle will depart from Chesterfield Avenue. The Green Loop is a 42 km mix of trail and road cycling (more than 3/4 are off-road). From Phoenix Park you will cycle along the Royal Canal to Leixlip (Co. Kildare), then across the Liffey to Griffin Valley Park in Lucan. Then the route continues along the Grand Canal through the War Memorial Park and back into Phoenix Park. For further information check the Irish Trail website below. People’s Art Exhibition

Four times this year the “People’s Art 2012? exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green. If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions. Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free. Specific start and end times are not defined, but exhibition space has to be occupied by 11:00, so 11:00 is the latest start time. The event runs from Friday until Sunday, but Sat+Sun will most likely be the main days. The June exhibition is the second this year and you see a wide range of paintings and other “hangable” art for sale.
People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

Due to the exhibition organised by the Dublin Sketchers in Dun Laoghaire this weekend, I expect that the weekly sketching meet-up might not take place. Instead, you should go to Dun Laoghaire to see the great work the Dublin Sketchers have produced in the last year.
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The intent of Refresh Dublin is to provide a cross-discipline insight into all things design, interactive, creative and technical, so that different disciplines can learn from each other. The next talk will take place on Tues and is entitled “In vino veritas mobilitas: A pragmatic approach to mobile on a shoestring” with Laurence Veale. Lots of companies are struggling to maintain their own websites – so what should they do about mobile? Using his work for The Corkscrew, Lar will talk about the considerations and process for creating their mobile site, particularly as a small business. He’ll be looking at mobile analytics, using analytics to make the case for mobile and how to make an impact – all on a budget.
Laurence is is a Senior Analyst with iQ Content, a UX design consultancy based in Dublin, who have done and are still doing a HUGE amount of brilliant work for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Admission is free, but booking is recommended on the Science Gallery website.

CTVR / The Telecommunications Research Centre, in collaboration with the Dublin Art and Technology Association (D.A.T.A) present Open Here, a four day festival (28 June – 01 July) that addresses social, technological and cultural issues surrounding the notion of the digital commons at Science Gallery during HACK THE CITY.
Open Here will bring together a transdisciplinary community of critical theorists, engineers, artists, designers and industry professionals to expand debates surrounding the digital commons. Key points of discussion will include the conflictive spaces of the digital commons, tactical media, net-art, digital policy, disruptive wireless practices, alternative spectrum ownership models, next-generation networks and the political economy of infrastructure.
This festival is made up of talks, presentations, workshops, discussions and screenings. It will be held in Science Gallery and in CTVR headquarters in Trinity College. Admission is free, but booking is required.

Disappointing Misleading Advertisement – Lidl
I have to admit it and it ain’t easy to come out! ;-) But you will find out eventually anyway, so I might as well tell you now: I am a …. Lidl fan! :-) Yes, you might be shocked now and turn your head away from me, but I just love low priced, high quality goods and food. :-P But my love affair with Lidl has suffered knocks. The fact that nearly all food items are significantly more expensive then the identical item in Germany has tested my loyalty and the very much reduced product range here in comparison to the range in Germany is a further knock. If there was an alternative, I would go astray sometimes. Unfortunately there isn’t and so I put up with these things.
But this week Lidl really annoyed me. The current special offer leaflet tells us how “The cheapest gets cheaper” with new “Long Term Price Cuts” and among the products listed are “Organic Highland Coffee for now EUR 2.79, down from EUR 2.99 and German Smoked Pork Sausages for now EUR 1.39, down from 1.49. The annoying thing about this is that I bought these two items about a month ago for the “new” low price. So either they never went up to the higher price OR Lidl increased the price JUST to announce a price reduction. In my eyes this is dodgy and dishonest advertisement and I am very disappointed in my preferred supermarket.

Reducing the ovesized Dail? Nahh, just kidding!
Before the last election, Fine Gael promised to reduce the number of TDs (members of parliament) because most people would agree that for the size of the country, 166 TDs is much too much. Strangely Fine Gael didn’t pursue that promise too eagerly once they took their seats in the Dail. It is probably a lot easier to suggest cutting the TDs when you will not be affected. Another Fine Gael disappointment?
At least an overhaul of the very much outdated constituency (as can be seen by the relatively large number of referendums that are required) is now on the cards and “Constituency Commission” has been formed which now has published a report about suggested changes, One of the proposals is the reduction of TDs, but wait, are they serious? The Constituency Commission is suggesting the laughable reduction from 166 to 158. There are other morsels of (rather harmless) nonsense in the report. One example: The new name for the merged constituencies of Dublin North East and Dublin NOrth Central is “Dublin Bay North” and not to upset the people on the North, the constituency that is now called “Dublin South East” should be renamed to “Dublin Bay South”. Did you sleep well last night? It was the shortest night of the year with a sunrise already at around 04:30. Like every Thursday, I saw the sun rising while writing this Event Guide. :-) Another aspect of the Summer Solstice is that the (astronomical) Summer started yesterday. I know that some of you believe that yesterday was midsummer night, but, let’s see: If it was midsummer night, then half the summer is over and you had a flippin’ wet half of a summer. If you join me, then the summer is only starting and there is a possibility of some nice weather ahead. I’d invite you to join me and my point of view! ;-)
