Hi all!
I love bank holiday weekends! An extra day of the day job that can be used to enjoy events, how great is that! :-)
The weekend is busy and I think I found an event for virtually everybody. Now it is up to you to make use of all the offers that are out there. I will have a busy weekend, but that is not a complaint at all. Instead it is the great sign that the outdoor season is starting. Next week there will be the Gospel Rising Festival in Bray (www.gospelrising.com) and on 24-27 May the Dublin City Soul Festival (soul.ie/), one of my most favourite festivals, will be back.
[ad]
With soo much happening in the coming weeks, I will keep my eye on all these free events, but that means I can not focus on spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide much. That’s where you come in! I need you to helpor help a bit more if you already told a number of people.
The Dublin Event Guide Community is growing every week, but lately there are 5-10 unsubscribes because people are moving away from Ireland. I sometimes get the most heart wrenching mails where a number of times people told me “Please don’t send me the Dublin Event Guide anymore, I love it, but I had to leave Ireland and everytime I get the newsletter, I get homesick.” Tough times for some! But all in all it is a worthwhile experience to work abroad for a while if you grew up in Ireland and for people from other countries, it sometimes just brings forward some plans about going back that were there anyway.
Now, if people have to unsubscribe, this means that I need MORE new subscribers to compensate. Please help!
Spread the word, so that everybody in Dublin will hear about the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Get your friends and colleagues to subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or they can go to www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (Click on “Join Email List” at the top)! In addition you can tell the world by printing this poster and hanging it up in your gym, work place, local supermarket etc.: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf Thanks!

We are more than 8200 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide With your help, we will make it to 10,000 in no time! Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.
——
The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
This week’s Feel Good Slot is about an amazing Irish girl. 16 year old Joanne O’Riordan from Cork was born without arms or legs and last week she was speaking in front of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an UN organisation, about her challenges and how she overcomes them. Spend a few minutes to read her full speech here: www.itu.int/en/action/women/Pages/riordan-speech.aspx In December of last year she was on RTE’s Late Late Show, and the video clip is here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=R97hDC4hwEs What an amazing girl!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Franziska B and Pawel B. were the wonderful people that helped the Dublin Event Guide with their much appreciated donations. Every bit of help is hugely appreciated and is important to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about …and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).
I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)
BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Because a lot of people leave Dublin either to go home elsewhere in Ireland or to leave the country for holidays, bank holiday weekends are often not very busy with regards to events. This weekend is different and you should definitely be able to easily find something to do.
I will have some Krav Maga (self-defence) training this Saturday (www.kravmagaireland.com), so I won’t get a chance to do much then, but if I had time, I would go to the “Physics High Flyer” event and to the Crypt Craft Market. In the evening I might go to the Bray Jazz Festival, but unfortunately I will miss the Mexican Cinco the Mayo Fiesta in Dun Laoghaire.
On Sunday I plan to go to the Vintage Fair in the Food Co-op and to Art in Action in Phoenix Park. If you want to go to a gig, check out the Workman’s Club gig and the Independent Rock film screening plus live music in the Button Factory.
On Monday Art in Action is on the plan if I don’t make it on Sunday and I haven’t been in Ikea for a while, so you might find me there.
Tuesday is the day for the Milk & Cookies Stories in the Exchange, an event that is already popular and is attracting even more and more people.
On Wednesday the Temple Bar Cultural Trust is inviting to a whole variety of events Europe Day and some are really interesting and finally on Thursday, I would love to go to the TCD discussion about “Greed and the Crisis”. But next week I will be at Gospel Rising in Bray, so I probably need to start the Event Guide a bit earlier.
A nicely filled schedule for the week! :-)

______Competition______________
SUNDAY TIMES OUTDOOR FILM FESTIVAL – TEMPLE BAR
The Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) in co-operation with the Sunday Times have put together a great Outdoor Film Festival on Meeting House Square in Temple Bar. GOSPEL RISING MUSIC FESTIVAL – BRAY
If you are interested in Gospel Music and especially if you are or would like to get involved actively, this is a Must Go event! The Gospel Rising Music Festival (www.gospelrising.com) is taking place for the third years and after Ennis and Portlaoise where the festival towns. This year it is taking place in our neighbourhood in Bray. From Fri 11 – Sun 13 May, Bray is the Gospel Capital of Ireland and Gospel Rising is one of the first music festivals of the season.
“Gospel Rising” is a combination of free gospel choir gigs and non-free high quality workshops, giving everyone the chance to experience gospel choir singing.
This years workshops are all listed on www.gospelrising.com/workshop-details.html and even if you have never sung before or are not in a Gospel Choir you can take part and enjoy. Topics and areas that are covered are to improve your soloist skills and styles, join in with large group workshops, experience gospel styles like Contemporary Gospel or Barbershop, and the choreography style this year will be based on the TV show, Glee. You can choose the workshops you like.
There are still some weekend ticket available (EUR 60) and there will be free Gospel Concerts on Friday and Saturday. More details will be included here next week, but in the meantime you can find them on www.gospelrising.com
The organisers have made 2 Weekend Tickets available for a competition and I will inform the winners over this weekend and will announce their names next week.

TOLTEC SELF MASTERY TALK – TICKET COMPETITION
On Thurs 03 May Don Luis Molinar, an international teacher of Toltec Mastery, gave an introductory talk on Toltec Self Mastery. Don Luis Molinar is a Master teacher in the Toltec tradition, an ancient path of self awareness and knowledge from Mexico. The Toltec teaching is not a religion but a system of self awareness, of living life from a place of heart and love and getting past the limited patterns and conditionings we all hold. The Toltecs believe that we are dreaming all the time, whether asleep or awake, and that we have the power to change that dream from fear to love in any moment, to create a new dream of happiness and fulfilment for ourselves, our families and our communities. The winner of a pair of tickets to his talk “Stalking the Emotional Self” was won by Christa Large! Congratulations! Contact 087 6899211 or visit www.ToltecHeartWisdom.com for further details.

MOLLY MALONE UNDER COVER
Did you see Molly Malone all covered up in a pretty gold garment? And maybe you saw other changes in Grafton Street that puzzled you? It was all part of an Art project and you can see a picture and read some explanation here ;thedailyedge.thejournal.ie/puzzling-picture-of-the-day-438352-May2012/
DANCE WITHOUT DRINKS – MARK II
The Funky Seomra (www.facebook.com/FunkySeomra) is the trendsetter for the alcohol and d rug-free nights of dancing (next event on 19 May), but now there is a suitor stepping up and you have even more opportunities to go out for a night of dance and music in an alcohol free environment. “The Dance” will start this Saturday (05 May) in Ranelagh (Dublin 6). All details are here www.facebook.com/events/398783580155270/) Both alcohol-free dances are not free and the admission charge is the price you have to pay for this different type of entertainment.
SUPERMOON THIS WEEKEND
Check out the moon this weekend! It is bigger and brighter than usual and if we have a clear sky on Saturday night, you can enjoy this full moon even more than normally. The reason for the bigger size is because the moon is as close to the Earth as it gets (on its elliptical orbit). More information is provided by Astronomy Ireland here: astronomy.ie/supermoon.php
BEALTAINE FESTIVAL 2012
The Bealtaine Festival continues. It is a full month of events for the older age group and uses the theme “celebrating creativity as we age” this year. Estimates are that over 120,000 people will take part in Bealtaine. “From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists. …” There is a vast amount of events and the big contribution of the Public Libraries makes this event even a bigger success.
I have some event included again this week, but for more details you should check bealtaine.com/ and www.dublincitypubiclibraries.ie or have a look at the schedule here
www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/libraries/Events/Documents/Bealtaine%202012_low%20res.pdf
NEW ORLEANS JAZZ FESTIVAL
This is unfortunately not an event in Dublin, but this week the Bray Jazz Festival with a whole range of free events will take place and for the people that want even more Jazz, you can directly be part of the “New Orleans Jazz Fest”. From 04-06 May YouTune will live-stream the festival. It all starts today (Friday) at 14:00 CDT, which should be (if I calculated right) 20:00 in Ireland. Go to www.youtube.com/jazzfest

———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

GLOBAL CAN NAB IS MARCH – GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE
Sat 05 Mar: 13:00 – Garden of Remembrance (Parnell Sq) to Dail (Kildare Street) and back. – This is certainly not the type of event that I normally list here. A march to legalise d rugs? I have to admit that I am not in favour of dru g use and I would even include cigarettes and alcohol to a certain degree in that. But I have a close relative that has MS and then you wonder sometimes what would be best.
Oddly, though Luke Flanagan, isn’t someone I expected to promote the use of substances for medical reasons. Maybe he is just piggybacking on this for personal and not so much medical reasons??
Speakers will be Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan – TD, Gordon Mc Ardle – Compassionate Use of Medical Can na bis Act, Jude Campion – Multiple sclerosis patient and Vincent Lavery.
What is also odd is that the march is going from the Garden of Remembrance to the Dail and then BACK again! Never heard that anyone else was doing that.

______This is odd!!______________
Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this
section. ;-)
SEAN QUINN – BANKRUPT DUE TO IGNORANCE!?
Sean Quinn was one of Ireland’s most successful business people…until he went bankrupt. In 2008 he was the ri chest person in Ireland with an estimated EUR 4.7 bn, 2011 he was bankrupt. He once owned the Quinn Group, which offered Financial Services, Insurances for Car, Home and Health and himself and his family owned at some stage 15% or even 25% of the Anglo Irish Bank. If you want to read more about his life and businesses you can do that here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Se%C3%A1n_Quinn
The odd thing is that he now said he was unaware of the corporate structures set up to hold international property assets for his children despite the fact that he swore a document during his bankruptcy proceedings in Northern Ireland outlining those structures. If you read about his conduct and his statements in front of the High Court, you wonder he was just a lucky “wheeler and dealer” and was successful despite his ignorance or if he is just trying to outsmart the court with a performance that is more like acting dumb to get away with dodgy stuff to avoid a possible jail sentence. It seems he had not much clue about what was happening in his company:

Can someone please tell the weather gods that May is meant to be one of the warmest and best-weather months in Ireland!? With night temperatures forecasted to be 2 degrees on Saturday, it seems that the winter-ish climate continues for another while. Irish weather is something I will NEVER get used to, but after living here for a long time, you find ways (mainly warm clothes and umbrellas all year through!) to enjoy the outdoor events anyway! :-)
Have an event-ful weekend,

If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
