Hi all!
Read this week in the Dublin Event Guide why you HAVE to come to the Dublin City Soul Festival in two weeks time (see Dublin News) and why you should be very very careful if you bought a USB Drive/USB Stick recently maybe from Living Social -(see This is Odd).
In addition check out the weekend events, the great People’s Art Exhibition on the rails around St. Stephen’s Green, the Gospel Rising Festival in Bray and the Job Expo in the RDS.
And in addition to that find out – as every week – all the free events that take place in and around Dublin.
If that is not enough ;-) then check out the competitions: This week there are tickets for Bloom in Phoenix Park available for a number of lucky people and also a discount offer so that you can buy tickets for Bloom. And there are tickets the te Cycling Show in the RDS.
[ad]
And a “finger point” to one of the ads in the Dublin Event Guide: I need your help to cover the cost for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. You can do that by donating OR you can do it by clicking on the ads in the Dublin Event Guide when you want to buy something. The Book Depository currently has a 10% discount offer, which is valid until 14 May only, so only three more days during which you get a further reduction on the already low prices for Book Depository orders. Check out the ad to find the code that you have to type in when you order.
And finally my usual plea: Spread the word, so that everybody in Dublin will hear about the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Get your friends and colleagues to subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or they can go to www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (Click on “Join Email List” at the top)! In addition you can tell the world by printing this poster and hanging it up in your gym, work place, local supermarket etc.: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf Thanks!

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
With the Gospel Music Festival “Gospel Rising” taking place this weekend in Bray, I chose a gospel music-related “Feel Good Slot” clip. It is a song by Fred Hammond called “I Feel Good”. Nice little tune that you could adopt for the weekend: I Feel Good! www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQaZtJp_5bI

BOOK DEPOSITORY – BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE
Now is the time to buy your books! Books from Book Depository are always available for the best prices but now, only until 14 May, another 10% of reduction is available. Free delivery and there is no minimum order value.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Rosemarie L and Aisling S. were the wonderful people that helped the Dublin Event Guide with their much appreciated donations. Every bit of help is hugely appreciated and is important to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about …and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).
I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)
BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend I will spend in Bray at the Gospel Rising Festival, but there are great evens in taking place in the City Centre in Dublin as well if you don’t want to venture to Bray (direct DART route and there is also a late bus going back to Dublin City!).
If I stayed in Dublin, I would go to the People’s Art Exhibition around St. Stephen’s Green and – out of curiosity – I would go to the Jobs Expo in the RDS.
On Sunday I like the idea of the Fusion Sunday Market, an ethnic/international new market in the Food Co-op. Sounds great and I will be there next month! For families there is the Family Day in Iveagh Garden and the Harold’s Cross Festival.
During the week I found a very narrow diet: There is a very interesting talk/lecture every single day and I would love to go to all of them if I had the time. The topic (shortened, you will find the full explanations in the respective day sections):
Mon: Mediterranean Diet & Obesity
Tue: Social Media in the US Presidential Debate
Wed: Happiness and Emotional Intelligence
Thur: Allergy Epidemic
And finally there is another unique event that might interest you: have a look at the European Literature Night that takes place on Wednesday. Interesting!

DUBLIN CITY SOUL FESTIVAL
This year’s Dublin City Soul Festival will take place from 24-27 May (Thurs-Sun) and there will be a whole variety of events, including an outdoor music festival in Merrion Square. The Dublin Event Guide is very happy to fully support this great (free) festival and I will tell you more in the coming weeks. I am telling you already today, so that you can put the date in your calendar because this year is a very critical year for the festival. It absolutely needs your support, otherwise it will probably not be able to continue after this year. So, put the date in your diary, tell all your friends and makes sure that you come to Merrion Square (or to any of the other events) at the weekend in two weeks. Chris Maher who runs the festival with a team of people is working extremely hard on keeping the show on the road every year, but he needs your support…this year more than in any year before. I am already looking forward to the Dublin City Soul Festival and I hope I will see ALL of you there! :-)

I have some event included again this week, but for more details you should check bealtaine.com/ and www.dublincitypubiclibraries.ie or have a look at the schedule here

———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. There will be lots of free events for families to take part in, including family sports day activities, children’s entertainment, face painting, arts and crafts workshops as well as storytelling sessions. A food village will also be in the Gardens.
The website was meant to be www.familyday.ie, but that site was still not working properly on 11 May, so instead I found a website that can’t be reached the intended way, but at least contains all the relevant information. www.d1069732.blacknight.com/familyday/about-family-day Some event organisers “could do better” when it comes to informing their customers efficiently. The yearly Harold’s Cross Festival will take place in the Harold’s Cross Park near the Greyhound Stadium. It is a festival that is usually not advertised in any way. Maybe to keep the “Community” character or maybe because the organisers are focusing on other things than to spread the word? It seems that flyers were distributed in Harold’s Cross. Interestingly, the little visited facebook page has a different start and end time than the flyer that was delivered to houses in Harold’s Cross. The flyer quotes a start time of 14:00. The festival is usually not big, but definitely a great place to go with the kids. www.facebook.com/Harolds.Cross.Festival

Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. In June they will run an exhibition of their works and I will list the details when I find out. ARMY DESERTERS AND NEUTRALITY – TALK – NATIONAL LIBRARY
Wed 16 May: 19:30 (Doors: 19:00) – National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2
“Pardon or punishment: Ireland’s WW2 deserters and the morality of neutrality” is the theme of a discussion at the “History Ireland Hedge School”. Panel discussion with Professor Brian Girvin (University of Glasgow), Dr Michael Kennedy (Executive Editor of the Royal Irish Academy’s Documents on Irish Foreign Policy), Professor Geoffrey Roberts (UCC) and Professor Eunan O’Halpin (TCD).
It was called ‘Ireland’s list of shame’. It was the blacklist of 4,983 men who deserted from the Irish Army during World War 2. In 1945 Emergency Powers Order 362 ruled that returning Irish Army deserters were to be banned from state jobs for seven years and to lose pay, pension and unemployment benefits they might have qualified for had they remained.
It is thought that about 100 of them are still alive. Is it worth seeking pardon for such a small number? Should one pardon everyone, including the ones who never fought at all? Had Ireland a right to be neutral and to penalise deserters from its defence forces at a time of national peril? Admission is free and bo booking is required. More information can be found here www.nli.ie/en/list/current-events.aspx

FAKE USB DRIVES SOLD ON LIVING SOCIAL?? – WATCH OUT!
Last week Living Social, which is a Group Buying Website like Groupon/City Deals, promoted a deal from the UK company “Bo Vida”. A 32 Gbyte USB stick was available for EUR 16 (+ EUR 5 for postage) and two 32 GByte USB sticks were sold for EUR 24 plus the same 5 EUR for postage: www.livingsocial.com/cities/1677/deals/338544-32gb-key-shape-usb-drive More than 5400 people bought, but the price was unusual and surprisingly low, so I started digging a little. The selling company has the normal price still at GBP 39 here www.bo-vida.co.uk/gadgets/32gb-key-shape-usb-drive.html but if they offer it for so low, then it must be a cheap Chinese product and I got burned badly before when I bought a USB stick on eBay. So let’s investigate a bit further: The Bo Vida picture and the first picture on this Chinese wholesale website look surprisingly similar: www.dhgate.com/wholesale/key+shape+usb+flash+drive.html The wholesale price is just above 10 Dollars, so Bo Vida’s margin is not huge, but with 5400 customers it is still a minimum of 10k. However, the story is not over yet: Click on the link to the seller on the DHGate website (www.dhgate.com/key-shape-usb-32gb-usb-2-0-flash-memory-u/p-ff80808131d786fd0131feb67c4d0117.html)
and now check the line OPTIONS underneath the price. Oh ohhhh! What does it say there? Do you see the “real 4 Gb show 32 Gb”? That means the low priced USB stick sold here is a not so low priced 4 Gb USB stick that pretends to be a 32 Gbyte version! Wow! Is it just an odd coincidence that the exact same picture is used? (The only link between the Bo Vida offer and the offer on the DHGate website is the use of the same picture and that is not the strongest link!) But imagine the 4 GByte USB Drives, which are fake 32 GByte Drives are really the one sold!? Could it be that Living Social is selling fake 32 Gbyte USB Drives? I don’t know if that is the case and (apart from the identical picture used) have no proof in any shape or form that the sold Drives are of the Chinese fake sort. But having found fake drives so easily on a wholesale website, I strongly recommend that you check the USB Drives when you get them if you had ordered through that offer. And even if you have NOT ordered through the Living Social offer, but got your USB Drive elsewhere or will in the future buy a USB Drive, make sure that you check it immediately, there are clearly LOTS of fakes around!! The “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” will soon be 5 years old and I am thinking about having a bit of a celebration if there are a few people interested in it. Send me a mail if you think we should make it a bit of an event and if you have an idea how we should celebrate it, let me know that as well. I am just gathering a few suggestions … if there is interest. ;-)
Have an event-ful weekend,

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
