Hi all!

Six shows in the Tivoli are behind us and there are seven more to come. If you don’t know what I am talking about, then let me fill you in briefly: I am part of the backing choir of the Elvis Tribute show “Return of the King” (www.facebook.com/events/302163716505338/) with Kevin Doyle as Elvis and the brilliant The Way it Was Orchestra. We will be in the Tivoli until the 10 March and I hope you will come and see our show. The gigs go really well and the critiques are very good. Have a look here, for example: www.dublinculture.ie/2012/02/return-of-king.html Tickets for weekend shows sell really well and at some mid-week shows there are still more tickets available. On Wednesday night we had a CRAZY (in the very good meaning of the word!) audience. :-) A whole group of women who probably well remember Elvis from when they were young were there and had a brilliant time. And that got me to think: Mothers Day in Ireland is on 18 March and wouldn’t it be great to come to this gig with your mother and you might as well bring your dad! And if your parents are not in Ireland or not around us anymore, then just bring yourself and enjoy the music they would have enjoyed when they were younger. Tickets are available here www.tivoli.ie/elvis-the-return-of-the-king/ And there is another chance to win some tickets if you are lucky: Check the Competition section!

What else is new? Spring weather is here! Wasn’t that a wonderful day yesterday? Well, the outdoor event season is not too far away and it would be great if we had a nice spring and summer. I know, I am long enough in Dublin to be so optimistic, but, hey, you never know. ;-) One year, we will have a REAL great summer again! :-P

And finally: Regularly people tell me how they found out about the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” and that they find more and more people at work and wherever else they meet people, who also have subscribed to the Dublin Event Guide. This is great! Now imagine how great it would be if even more people knew about it? Maybe we should invent a secret handshake for the Dublin Event Guide Community!?!?! :-) But until then, just tell ALL your friends and family.

Tell them that they HAVE to subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com or on www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (Click on “Join Email List” in the menu on the left.) unless they want to miss out! Or print this poster and hang it up in your gym, work place, local supermarket etc. www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf

We are more than 7600 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide but it would be great to grow the community there even more. Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
This week, the video clip here is a little less WOW!, but nevertheless a good one. It is just a little “slower” but contains an important message. In it Peter Diamandis, a philanthropist and a key figure in the development of the personal spaceflight industry talks about how the media tells us only distorted and bad stories and how our real future will be a World of Abundance. So, some of us might feel bad about the future, but when you look at the full and real picture, we should be very confident about the bright future ahead. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BltRufe5kkI

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Nikodem R, Stefanie N contributed to the Dublin Event Guide. Their contribution is HUGELY appreciated! But, dear readers, I need more of you to help with a small donation! The donations are important to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about or if it even helped you to save money…and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

To join the list of the much appreciated and esteemed supporters of the Dublin Event Guide, go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost. – To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more.

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. All I need from you is to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!?

BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here every time you want to purchases something, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

I am still most nights on stage in the Tivoli Theater – expecting to see YOU in the audience. ;-) So there are not too many events I can go to. But we take a break from the shows on Sunday and Monday and during the day at the weekdays I have time as well.

So this week the following events are on my to do list or on my “would like to do” list:

On Sunday I will be at tha Ha’Penny Indoor Market at the Grand Social and will probably have a look at the Demo day at the Print Museum. In the evening I hope you help us sell out the Tivoli Theatre!

On Sunday I might go to the Botanic Garden to see the new growth which clearly indicates that a) spring is near and b) there is chance that temperatures will soon increase! Chance! Not Guarantee! In the evening you should come to the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass, it is a great event.

On Monday the Al Mutanabbi Street event sounds interesting and Comedy Crunch in Stag’s Head is something everyone should at least try once!

On Tuesday or on Wednesday you have the VERY rare opportunity to see the most expensive coin in the world. It will be on show in the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Check out the Double Eagle Coin! Another event that sounds interesting is the Ingenious Irish Women talk. There are a number of women-focused events this week because the International Women’s Day is coming up.

On Thursday the talks in the Central Library about the Irish Economy sound intriguing, but the timing of the talks will not allow me to go there.

THE RETURN OF THE KING- ELVIS TRIBUTE SHOW
Last week and this week I mentioned that I am currently on stage for 13 weeks singing in the backing choir of Kevin Doyle’s fabulous “The Return of the King” Elvis Tribute show. We are performing from 23 Feb – 10 March in the Tivoli Theatre and you can find all details here www.facebook.com/events/302163716505338/ Last week I gave out a few pairs of tickets through a competition and one of the winners wrote to me afterwards: “What a great show! I am too young to remember Elvis Presley and thought I liked just some of his songs, but the show in the Tivoli blew me away. It was so much fun and Kevin Doyle is brilliant. I will tell all my friends to go. Thanks so so much for the tickets!”
Tickets are EUR 20-28.50 (depending on the day) and are available from www.tivoli.ie/elvis-the-return-of-the-king/ It would be great if many of you could buy tickets and see us! And this week two Dublin Event Guide readers will win a pair of tickets to our show on Wednesday 07 March. To win a pair of tickets, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with RETURN OF THE KING in the subject of your mail and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your e-mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Monday 05 March. www.facebook.com/KevinDoyleElvis

2 WEEK ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSE – MALVERN HOUSE
Malvern House English School is a brand new English school in Dublin and the school is opening its doors in Dublin city on Dame Street in March. To celebrate this and to help Dublin Event Guide readers who do not have English as their first language, Malvern House English School is making two free places available on a 2 week English course (20 lessons per week). This prize had a value of EUR 440(!!) per person and I all entries have been checked and now Malvern House will talk to the lucky winners of the draw to see if their level of English is suitable for the currently available classes. I will announce the winners next week here, once Malvern House has confirmed their names. A big thanks to Malvern House for this super prize! www.malvernhouse.ie

DUBLINTELLECTUAL – ZOMBIE EVENT
“Zombies: Are we dead yet?” is the name of a night o talks, clips and music on the undead, organised by Dublintellectual. It will take place on Fri 02 March in the The Back Loft, Augustine Street off Thomas St, Dublin 8. I wasn’t able to confirm if the winner will be able to make it, so I am holding back with the name this week. www.facebook.com/pages/Dublintellectual/171421632924002

MUSICAL YOUTH FOUNDATION NEEDS YOUR UNWANTED GUITARS
The Dublin City Soul Festival and the Musical Youth Foundation are directly linked and are both organised and managed by the energetic Chris Maher, who leaves no stone unturned to keep the Soul Festival going year after year. The Musical Youth Foundation is a children’s charity that has as its mission to provide every child in Ireland with access to a musical education and its many associated life changing benefits. For a very very special project that will be unveiled soon, the Musical Youth Foundation is asking you now to give them any old, unused, unloved or even broken guitars that you might have at home. I was privileged enough to be given a glimpse of what is planned and I can tell you that your guitar will definitely be put to good use. So if you have a guitar at home that you don’t want or need anymore contact saoirse@soul.ie to arrange delivery/collection of your donated guitar. And as a bonus, everyone who donates will be invited to the launch of this very special project, which will happen in association with the Dublin City Soul Festival. So, de-clutter your home, help the Musical Youth Foundation and put your name on the guest list for this great event! www.musicalyouthfoundation.org

CRACKBIRD MOVES AGAIN!?
For many many years “Fan’s” has been a Chinese restaurant in 60 Dame Street. I have been in the Chinese restaurants on the other side of the street, but never made it into Fan’s: www.flickr.com/photos/infomatique/6629543499/ A few weeks ago, Fan’s suddenly disappeared and Crackbird opened. But what happened to Crackbird in South William Street? Well, it seems that “Bear” is in there now and Crackbird moved lock-stock and barrel to Dame Street. I love Crackbird and it is great to see that while other places close all over the place, there are restaurant businesses and owners that are clued in enough to see what people want and to provide that. But I am a bit puzzled by the contant moving of Crackbird. It originally emerged from a Pop-up Restaurant in 19 Crane Lane before moving to South William Street and now to Dame Street. The food is – you guessed it – chicken. Fried chicken to be accurate and I recommend the Soy Garlic Chicken. Soo Yummy! Oh and if you could forward this endorsement to Joe Macken, who owns Jo’Burger, Crackbird, Skinflint and Bear. I would be more than happy to test his other restaurants as well. Repeatedly if required. :-P

BAD ASS CAFÉ REOPENING
The Bad Ass Café in Temple Bar, just around the corner from Temple Bar Square had years of stability followed by lots of turmoil and it now was finally re-opened. Originally it started in 1983 before Temple Bar was what it is now. 28 (!!) years later, around March 2011 it had to close. (www.broadsheet.ie/2011/05/04/has-the-bad-ass-cafe-closed/) The reaction to that news was very mixed. Some thought it was time that the meanwhile deteriorated place had closed shop. Others thought the Bad Ass Café was a Dublin landmark and regretted the closure.
Interestingly, a few months later – and probably under new ownership – it re-opened and was ripped apart by an Irish Times critique in October 2011 at www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/magazine/2011/1015/1224305610752.html What happened next is not clear. Based on a Facebook Page the Bad Ass Comedy Café was opened on 18 November but this Thursday (01 March) was another re-opening of the Bad Ass Café. Was that just the official opening four month after the actual re-opening? Or had it been closed AGAIN? The Irish Times critique didn’t sound good at all, but it was written in October 2011? Was the Café open at that time if it only re-opened on 18 November? Confusion all around! And the website at www.badassdublin.com only confirms that the new design really is a rather uninspired airport-type pub look.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

MUSICMAKER – EURO MILLI ON SALE
Sat 03 Mar: 10:00 – Musicmaker, 29 Exchequer Street, Dublin 2
I know this is not really the type of event that I normally include here. It is a sale of equipment and if I wanted to start including all sales this e-mail would be completely blown out of proportion. No worries, I don’t plan to! ;-) The reason why I include the “Musicmaker Mil lion Euro Sale” is because it is more a spectacular than a normal sale. Firstly the price reductions are really good. It is not the type of sale where after the reduction the price is where you would have expected it in the first place. But the other reason for mentioning it here is that in previous years a party atmosphere was created by camping and queuing bands in Exchequer Street and Musicmaker got some other businesses to use the advertisement opportunity and to provide free coffee and Pizza and McDonalds discounts. I might go to Exchequer Street on Friday evening, just to see if the street party atmosphere that Musicmaker expects and promises will really be there. ;-) www.facebook.com/musicmakereire.

AL MUTANABBI STREET – READING, EXHIBITION, PERFORMANCE
Mon 05 Mar: 19:00 – The Winding Stair Bookshop, 40 Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin 1. – On 5 March 2007 a bomb was exploded on Baghdad’s Al-Mutanabbi Street, located in a mixed Shia-Sunni area. More than 30 people were killed and 100 wounded. Al-Mutanabbi Street, the historic centre of bookselling in Baghdad, holds bookstores and outdoor bookstalls, cafes, stationery shops, tea & tobacco stores. It has been the core of Baghdad’s literary and intellectual community for many centuries. The Al-Mutanabbi Street coalition was formed in response to the bombing by poet and bookseller Beau Beausoleil in San Francisco. It initiated and completed a project with contributions of 130 broadsides from 130 letterpress printers, some of which were exhibited at the Market House in Monaghan and the Central Library in Dublin last March. It’s now in the process of compiling ‘An Inventory of Al-Mutanabbi Street’, a project for which over 250 writers and artists worldwide have committed to producing three books each in a symbolic attempt to “re-assemble” the “inventory” of what was lost in the bombing.
Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts in Dublin is the Dublin edition of a series of events taking place around the globe on 5 March 2012 to mark the 5th anniversary of the bombing, and will feature readings, performances and exhibitions by the Ireland-based participants in ‘An Inventory of Al-Mutanabbi Street’ and other friends of these projects. The event will include a short play, a poetry reading with musical accompaniment, a performance of poetry in translation, a short talk on the significance of the project, and exhibitions of images from books produced for the project. The writers, performers and artists contributing to the evening are Alansary, Cah-44, Evelyn Conlon, Sue Cosgrave, Djeribi, Kit Fryatt, Judy Kravis and Sarah Lewtas. The event is co-ordinated and will be introduced by Christodoulos Makris.

FIRST WEDNESDAY – OPW SITES
Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. Last year the the Office of Public Works (OPW) has launched an initiative to encourage more people to visit the historic sites that it manages. PRINTING IN THE DAIL – IGNORANCE OR STUPIDITY?
Last week all media outlets reported the incredible story of Sinn Fein’s TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh wasting EUR 50,000 on ink cartridges for his printer. Over a two year period (2007 and 2008) he used the amazing number of 434 ink cartridges, which means that on average every 1.2 days a new cartridge was used. Either someone has to be extremely ignorant or just outright stupid to print huge quantities of leaflets on a ink jet printer and not to realise at some stage that something must be wrong if a new ink cartridge is needed every 1.2 days. The most outrageous aspect of this, however, is that Aengus Ó Snodaigh tried to defend his waste of EUR 50,000 worth of ink cartridges. www.rte.ie/news/2012/0228/osnodaigha.html
It is good news that the situation occurred a few years ago and was not repeated, but all these scenarios are only the tip of the iceberg and the monumental waste in the Dail must have criminal proportions.

GARDAI ARE AFTER ME!?
Last week after the Garda had announced that “Operation Focus” (www.thejournal.ie/operation-focus-targets-high-risk-areas-in-push-for-safer-driving-365507-Feb2012/) was implemented to increase road safety, they must have thought that I am the worst culprit! Over three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) I was stopped at a checkpoint on three occasions in totally different places and in all cases it was an alcohol check. Twice I was checked, the third time I “got away”. The odd thing is that over the last 1.5 years I wasn’t stopped once, I even think that I never saw a checkpoint in that time. Would it not make more sense to show a presence all the time instead of going mad for three days and then giving up on checks again??
Another odd thing (not in the “shocking odd” category but in the “funny odd” one) was how a garda checked a broken headlight on my car: It was night and to check if my headlight is working or not he decided to switch on his torch and point the torch at my headlight. Dooooohhhhh! :-)

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
