Hi all!

It fascinates me to look at pictures of the places we live in from many years ago. My mother was absolutely brilliant in compiling photo albums from the first day of my life until I was about 16. After that she handed the job over to me and somehow the quality and consistency dropped significantly. ;-) Our private photo albums mainly contain pictures of ourselves with friends and family, not of the places we live in. So sometimes it is difficult to find good pictures of the cities, towns and villages. And it is sooo interesting to look at them many years later. By pure coincidence I found a stack of pictures of Dublin in 1961. Have a look at O’Connell Bridge in 1961: ilovephoto.info/file/index/454589 Not THAT much has changed, but watch out for Nelson’s Pillar in the background (it was blown up by the IRA in 1966). …and watch out for the police man in his black and white box on the median. I found it interesting that there are quite a number of cyclists on this picture. But then I found another one here: ilovephoto.info/file/index/454582 Wow, so many bicycles. The description says the picture was taken in Sth Great George’s Street, but to me it looks more like Dame Street. The whole set of 13 pictures is here: ilovephoto.info/item/view/22518

51 years since these pictures were taken and a lot has changed, but wasn’t the year 2000 meant to bring flying cars and all other fancy new beginnings? Instead – and it is a good thing! – we are going back to bikes and trams which were removed to make space for the amazing automobile!

I told you that there are big changes planned for the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” and I can tell you now that one of the big changes is a new and MUCH nicer layout of this weekly e-zine/newsletter, something you were praying for for years, I know! ;-) I am sure, though, that unlike the story with trams and bikes, you will not want to go back to the old layout when you see the new one. :-)

A very busy weekend and week. One reason is Valentine’s Day and the extra effort that a number of venues and organisations put in to run some events around that time, but in addition the schools are closed for mid-term breaks and due to the direction into the brighter part of the year, it is just that many organisations start again running lots of events. I seem to find more and more!

I will try to go to Edible, the new Science Gallery exhibition, this weekend, and there is the Career Zoo, I am not looking for a new job I have enough jobs, but I will probably go to the event just to see how it is set up etc. On Saturday there are also the Farmleigh Talks and the Contemporary Music Centre concerts that sound interesting. And in the evening, the Ukeristic Congress gig in Whelan’s is fun.

Science Gallery and Career Zoo are available on Sunday as well, so I might do some on Sat and others on Sun. Sunday evening is Gardiner Street Gospel Mass again, the weekly “Gig in God’s Gaff” and you will find me there.

During the week: Check out the “A Date with Dublin” on Tuesday and the Milk & Cookie Stories. On Wednesday the Dublintellectual talks sound interesting and on Thursday I would love to go to the Viking History event, but unfortunately I am a tiny bit too old for that. ;-)

MAGICAL MOVIES – TEMPLE BAR
You read about it in the Dublin News section here last week: The Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) is running “A Date with Dublin”, a whole range of events on Valentine’s Day. There are lots of events, mainly in Temple Bar but as well further afield, and you can find all details in the events list for Tuesday. One of the highlights in the event list for “A Date With Dublin” is the screening of three movies on Meeting House Square under the new umbrella roof. The movies are “Casablanca” (1942) at 18:30, “Once” (2006) at 21:00 and the audience choice “The Princess Bride” (1987). The three screenings come with extra bonuses (dinner after Casablanca and hot chocolate and popcorn for the other two), which more than makes up for the EUR 5 per screening. But the dramatic news is that Casablanca and Once are completely sold out since last night and only a very small number of tickets are available for the Princess Bride (Book here: entertainment.ticketsolve.com/shows/126522781/events/on/2012/2/14). Great news that the events are so popular, but if you didn’t take action after me mentioning the events in last week’s Dublin Event Guide, you might miss out this time. …UNLESS you take part in this super competition: The Temple Bar Cultural Trust generously have made four (!!) pairs of multi-tickets available for a competition among the readers of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). A DATE WITH DUBLIN – TEMPLE BAR + VALENTINE’S DAY
Last week I wrote about the great series event “A Date With Dublin” that has been planned and organised by the Temple Bar Cultural Trust. When I wrote about all the events I realised that the film screenings on Meeting House Square were – for the first time – not free and I expressed my surprise and – because non-free events don’t fit in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), I had to take them out again. Since then I had an opportunity to talk to the people at the TBCT and they explained that the problem they encountered in the past was that people collected tickets, but then didn’t come to the event. And consequently other people that were interested, but didn’t get tickets, couldn’t come. So in an effort to reduce the non-shows, the TBCT decided to sell the tickets for a relatively low charge and more or less compensate the purchasers with additional value (dinner for the early film and popcorn and hot chocolate for the two later films). After the explanation, I fully understand it now and can see the point in charging for the screenings.
But I was wondering if any of your brainy people out there have an even better idea. I am not sure if there is a better idea, but let’s see: Could something be done that tickets can still be given out for free but the no-show numbers are kept as small as possible?? If you can come up with an idea, send it to me at dublineventguide@gmail.com By the way: The idea of letting other people that queue in if the ticket holders don’t come doesn’t really solve the problem. Because the people that wanted tickets but couldn’t get any might not be too keen on standing in a looong queue banking on the chance that they are in luck and that they are the right point in the queue to get in.

From 23 February until 10 March we will perform every evening apart from Mondays in the Tivoli Theatre and I am really looking forward to it. “Addicted to Lush” is a solo exhibition by Debbie Lush. To get into the mood for Valentines Day, artist Debbie Lush brings a selection of her “De-lushious” shoes, handbags, designer hats and poppy flowers to the Balla Bán Art Gallery. Her shoe paintings were initially inspired by the popular TV series “Seks in the City” where certain designer shoes became a very regular feature on the series and almost to the point of being an obsessions. To compliment her shoe paintings, Debbie expanded her range of paintings to include hats and handbags, creating a fashion theme throughout her work. A new exhibition was launched yesterday in the Science Gallery. I haven’t seen it yet and can therefore only go by an early description:

You make choices at every meal that shape and change the culinary-agro-ecosystem. Edible will be a sensory feast from morsels of genomic gastronomy to external mechanical digestive systems.”
I have no doubt that it is an outstanding exhibition as all Science Gallery exhibitions are, but I have to go there first before I understand what the exhibition is really about. You would think that the Science Gallery would at least send me their Press Releases, considering how much I like their exhibitions and accordingly promote them here in a big way. The website unfortunately doesn’t contain easily usable information in the context of an Event Guide. The lecture “Metamaterials and the Science of Invisibility” by Sir John Pendry is part of the UCD Physics – RDS Distinguished Speaker Series 2012. In celebration of Physics and Dublin’s status as European City of Science 2012, UCD School of Physics has teamed up with the Royal Dublin Society to bring some of the world’s leading physicists to speak in Dublin about the latest developments in their fields of research. The topics include the exotic physics of cloaking devices, the role of physics in biology, the use of lasers in medicine and a profile of mysterious Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. The lectures are free and suitable for a general audience.
The UCD School of Physics describes “Speaking in advance of his lecture Sir John Pendry, Imperial College UK, explained how refractive materials give limited control of light: we can fashion lenses, and construct waveguides, but complete control is beyond simple refracting materials. Ideally we might wish to channel and direct light as we please just as we might divert the flow of a fluid. The laws of electromagnetism show that we can achieve just that and metamaterials open the door to this new design paradigm for optics, providing the properties required to give complete control of light. This lecture will explore the potential applications of this field, including the option to steer light around a hidden region, creating a cloak of invisibility.”

GOD AND SEKS: WHAT THE BIBLE REALLY SAYS – RIA

Where I wrote “seks”, there should be a three letter word starting with an “s” and ending with a “x”, that sounds like “seks”. If I properly spelled that word, you yould most likely not get this e-zine because all sorts of Spam-Filters would ruthlessly catch it.
This Academy Discourse in the Royal Irish Academy is entitled “God and Seks: what the Bible really says” by Michael Coogan. Coogan is one of the leading biblical scholars in the United States, Michael Coogan is Director of Publications for the Harvard Semitic Museum and Lecturer on Old Testament/Hebrew Bible at Harvard Divinity School.
Coogan has written many books about the bible and his newsest has the same title as he talk. Tthe Bible speaks with many voices, not one, and some of its values are no longer ours. A close look at the story of David and Bathsheba, one of the most famous and most ambiguous biblical narratives, will illustrate these issues.

ARTISTS ARE ODD!!
I know a number of artists and originally thought they are quite normal people, just a lot more creative than me, maybe. ;-) But when I read the descriptions of exhibitions week after week, I wonder if my assessment is correct. Now before I continue, I should mention that these exhibition descriptions are often written by curators. Curators are the people that organise the exhibition for the artists and try to find a market for the artists work. But it is not always clear if the description came from the artist or from the curator and apart from that, curators are artists as well, just maybe with a talent in a different direction.
How do I make the conclusion that artists (or curators) are odd? Well, read this description of a current exhibition: “The study of this fragmented symbolism, is undertaken with an apocalyptic toned deconstruction of domestic iconography, so that the images have an eerie, confrontational quality. The anonymous structures she conceives conceal in their simplicity the struggles that each household undergoes; there is no evidence of human contact or familial presence, save for fallen walls that bespeak a nondescript, unseen level of turmoil.” And then artists wonder why they often have difficulties to reach us normal people!?
