———————————————————————

Hi all!

In recent weeks I have mentioned a couple of times that big news about the Dublin Event Guide are on their way and it left a number of you so impatient that they are pestering me (in a nice way!) to tell them what the big news are! I see that as a good thing: Many of you do feel a belonging to the Dublin Event Guide Community and are very interested in all the changes and news. Thanks for that support! A LOT of work has been done and all is on track, but I can still not tell you what the big news is. You have to be patient for another little bit. ;-)
However, I don’t want to cruel, so I will reveal one little bit and at the same time I am asking you to help me a little further: The big news will be about a SIGNIFICANT improvement of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. The content will not change too much, but a lot will look and “feel” MUCH better! – That is not revealing much, you are saying? Well, then help me! Send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject BETTER and tell me ALL the things you would like to see changed or improved. Don’t hold back, just tell me everything you would like to see changed. What would have to be done to the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” so that you would tell at least 5 more people about it and would ask them to subscribe too? Every mail will be entered in a draw for a pair of tickets for an upcoming BIG event. So it is definitely worth sending me a mail with your suggestions! :-)

[ad]

If you think the Dublin Event Guide is soo useful that you already could easily tell 5 more people about it, then go ahead! Don’t let me stop you! :-) In fact I have some help available: Tell your family, your friends and colleagues or print this poster and hang it up in your gym, work place, local supermarket etc. www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
Everybody can (and should! ;-) ) subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or on www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (Click on “Join Email List” in the menu on the left.)

Now back to the weekly events! ;-) This week the main event in Dublin is the Tradfest which has grown substantially over the last few years and growing into a proper fully fledged festival with outdoor stages and family entertainment etc. Enjoy the festival!

We are more than 7400 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide but it would be great to grow the community there even more. Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

——
The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
This week I have a picture for you. Just a picture of two letters. The first letter was sent by a 3.5 year old and the second letter is Sainsbury’s reply to the letter. What if all customer service was like this? What if all your suppliers would deal with you like that? And what if you dealt in such a nice manner with all your clients? And did you consider that “clients” of some sort are your colleagues, family members, friends, parents etc, not only the clients/customers in your day job?

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Corina R, Maite L-Sch, Aine C, Justin McC, Paul A, Enrique P contributed to the Dublin Event Guide and their contribution is HUGELY appreciated. The donations are important to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about or if it even helped you to save money…and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

To join the list of the much appreciated and esteemed supporters of the Dublin Event Guide, go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost. – To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more.

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. All I need from you is to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!?

BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here every time you want to purchases something, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

The main event this week is the Temple Bar Trad Festival. It started as a small music festival that took place mainly in a few pubs and has grown so much in the last few years. This year there is family entertainment and there are outdoor stages etc. Great development!

Apart from the TradFest there is not too much taking place. The Dublin Flea Market is always worth a visit and this week you can buy lots of second hand clothes at the Closet Clear-out on Saturday.

I will be busy the whole weekend with other “stuff” ;-) so I won’t be able to do much. But will try to go the Temple Bar Trad Festival and hopefully to the Flea Market.

Have a look as well at the competitions this week! The Beatles show is great!

A brilliant event is currently taking place in the Tivoli Theatre (www.facebook.com/pages/Tivoli-Theatre-Dublin/120319968080952) in 135-138 Francis Street! Get Back is a Beatles Tribute show, telling the story of the Beatles through their songs and audio visuals. The performing band is the absolutely outstanding Beatles Tribute Band “The Classic Beatles” and you really feel as if a Time Machine has transported you back to the REAL Beatles gigs. I saw the show last week and was blown away. Get Back will be in the Tivoli Theatre until 14 Feb nearly every night (not on Mondays) and I can wholeheartedly recommend this gig! Tickets are between EUR 20-28.50 and there is a special EUR 21 offer for Tues-Thurs tickets on www.tivoli.ie/ at the moment. The Tivoli Theatre is a perfect venue for such a gig and – I have to say it again – the band is amazing! I was able to organise two pairs of tickets for a competition for you! The tickets are for Tuesday (31 Jan) evening (19:30) and please don’t enter the competition if you can’t make it on Tuesday evening. If you haven’t heard from me by Monday afternoon, you were not the winner in this instance, so just go ahead and book your tickets on www.tivoli.ie/ or by ringing 01-454 4472. Did I mention that I totally loved the show?! INTERNET CENSORSHIP IN IRELAND
When I started writing about this here, it was Tuesday of this week and not many had heard about this whole issue. The stopSOPAIreland.com campaign had about 2000 signatures and hardly any of the media had reported about it. Since Tuesday a lot has happened! At 12:00 on Friday 27 Jan, the campaign has 58,000 signatures and a mini success has been achieved.
But let me go a big step back in case you don’t know what this is all about:
On 10 January 2012, EMI has sued the Irish state and therefore all its citizens for alleged failure to implement aspects of EU copyright law. (www.tjmcintyre.com/2012/01/music-industry-sues-irish-state.html) This goes back to a High Court decision that came to the conclusion that a (copyright-infringing) website can not get legally blocked in Ireland because the required laws were not available. The government panicked immediately and decided to create a law through the back door without any democratic debate about it. Junior Minister (remember that name!) Sean Sherlock wanted to use something called “statutory instrument” to quickly create that law and bypass all democratic routes.
This is bad enough as it is totally undemocratic, but even worse is that EMI has only sued Ireland and no other country, that Ireland is not resisting the record industry as other countries have done it and that all this will create censorship in Ireland because the record industry could get courts to block websites that they feel are interfering with their rights. Just to make that clear, I am not saying that copyright infringement is justifiable. But what the record industry is trying to do is similar to forbidding Brown Thomas to open their doors because they sell knives and these knives COULD be used to harm someone. And then Brown Thomas would have to go to court (and pay for it) to prove that they are not murdering anyone and nobody can murder anybody with the knives that were bought in their shop. Ridiculous isn’t it?
What should you do? First inform yourself here jrnl.ie/335983 and then sign the online petition here www.stopsopaireland.com if you agree with the outrageousness of the Irish Government’s actions.
The immediate reactions of thousands of people meant that a small success was achieved: There will be debate in the Dail next week before the law will be signed, but you hear from that wording, that this is not yet enough. Some TDs will talk about it for a while and then the law will still be enacted. jrnl.ie/338435 So lots more people need to voice their opposition!
Some people seem to plan a protest at the Garden of Remembrance next week, in case you are interested: www.facebook.com/events/284626631593223/

DUBLIN PUBS – MISS THE POINT
A few days ago I received a Press Release from the Licensed Vintners Association (LVA), the trade association and representative body for the publicans of Dublin. The LVA came up with the amazing idea to launch “Dublin Does Fridays”, a “new campaign to celebrate he sociability of Dublin pubs”. Dublin Does Fridays is launched today (27 Jan) and runs until 30 March. You and I now would expect a list of events that will take place in the participating pubs, maybe even the announcement of a lower price for some non-alcoholic drinks to get people back into the pub, or some activities, gigs, gimmicks that will be the focal point of this campaign. But there is NOTHING of that type. This “campaign” is just an “invitation to give our world-class pub scene a boost by filling it with people”. WTF?
And then the LVA boss puts it words that he has no clue how to improve the declining fate of the pubs: Donall O Keeffe, Chief Executive of the LVA, said: “Dublin Does Fridays is focused on getting people out on a Friday evening and re-energising Dublin. The campaign is about making the pubs an even better experience by connecting with people in a more relevant way through social media and making it work for what it the ultimate social network – the Dublin pub. Whatever you’re looking for there’s a pub for you – the perfect pint, a little people watching or searching for the best snug. We all know the pub is a great place to unwind after a long working week so why not get some friends together and pop into your local pub to experience all that Dublin Does Fridays has to offer.”
This man certainly has his finger on the pulse! Yawn! I am sure you agree with me that he fully understands the reasons for the declining pub sales! Oh, I heard somewhere else that the LVA is spending the whopping amount of EUR 1 mio (!!) to promote this silly campaign!

DUBLIN CITY OF SCIENCE (???) LAUNCH
The formal launch of Dublin as the City of Science took place on Thursday. www.thejournal.ie/dublin-launches-year-as-european-city-of-science-337781-Jan2012/
I looked a bit more in to significance of that title, especially because in a variety of places it is referred to as the “European City of Science” and found some interesting facts. No EU-related organisation is selecting the City of Science and it is not certain if it is a special award to be called “City of Science” and if a city has to prove suitability in scientific terms. Instead the “City of Science” seems to be just the place that hosts the two-yearly Euroscience Open Forum. “Euroscience” is a “pan-European association of individuals interested in constructing scientific Europe ‘from the bottom-up’.” It has 2100 members from 40 countries and Prof. Patrick Cunningham (Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government of Ireland) is one of 17 board members.
So whoever wins the bid for running that event can call itself “City of Science”. Maybe it is just the fact that we have the Convention Centre Dublin here and the CCD was the cheaper venue in comparison to the main competitor Vienna?
The CCD is also this year’s venue for the 16th International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders with 3,000 delegates. Should we then call Dublin “International City of Parkinson Disease”?? :-O
So, the title might be a bit (or VERY) flimsy, BUT I can’t see anything wrong in having lots of science related events in Dublin this year!
Not sure if St. Patrick’s Day qualifies as a City of Science event – it is listed as a “highlight” on the (badly structured) event calendar here: www.dublinscience2012.ie/highlights
But I hope for some proper science related events among the promised 160 events.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

THE HOLOCAUST IN EUROPE – THE ATRIUM
23 Jan-10 Feb – The Atrium, 51 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2
The Holocaust Education Trust Ireland is inviting to an exhibition about “The Holocaust in Europe”. The exhibition is open from Mon-Fri during office hours and it is on show in the building that once was the OPW headquarter and now is used by OPW and the Department of Justice on the Eastern side of St. Stephen’s Green. Admission is free. www.hetireland.org

JOHN THOMSON – CHINESE PHOTOGRAPHY – CHESTER BEATTY LIBRARY
17 Nov-26 Feb – Chester Beatty Library, Garden of Dublin Castle, Dublin 2
“China through the Lens of John Thomson: 1868-1872” is the title of a Photographic Exhibition in the Chester Beatty Library. The exhibition already started in November, but I was told it is really good and worth mentioning again and it fits perfectly with the recent Chinese New Year celebrations. I will try to visit it in the next week or two.
On loan from the Wellcome Library in London, this exhibition consists of images of China, taken by Scottish photographer John Thomson (1837-1921). From 1868 to 1872, Thomson made extensive trips to Guangdong, Fujian, Beijing, China’s north-east and down the Yangtze River and the more than 50 images on display are from his time in these regions. cbl.ie

TURNER EXHIBITION – NATIONAL GALLERY
01-31 Jan: 12:00-17:30 – National Gallery, Clare Street, Dublin 2
The exhibition “Turner: A Light in the Darkness” is coming to an end next week already. Every year for one month in January, the National Gallery exhibits watercolour paintings by Joseph Mallord William (JMW) Turner. Featuring the artist’s most striking views painted during his European travels, the exhibition consists of works that were given to the National Gallery as the “Vaughan Bequest”. Turner: A Light in the Darkness will be complemented by a display of silhouettes and miniatures from the Mary A. McNeill Bequest (1984) which includes works by John Comerford, Richard Crosse, Henry Bone and Nathaniel Hone the Elder. Admission is free. web: www.nationalgallery.ie

TEMPLE BAR TRADFEST 2012
Wed 25 – Sun 29 Jan: Temple Bar
For 5 days the Temple Bar Tradfest will take place in Temple Bar. Year after year the festival is getting bigger and better and this year there will be lot of family events and even outdoor stages with entertainment. The website is at www.templebartrad.com Unfortunately the organisers decided to use the awkward and clumsy issuu reader to display the programmes instead of listing them in an easier readable way, so I had to jump through some hoops to get you a proper usable and downloadable pdf format. The Family Programme is exclusively available for you at www.dublineventguide.com/media/TradFest_Family_Prog.pdf and the full programme is here www.dublineventguide.com/media/TradFest2012_Main_Prog.pdf The files are BIG (Family Prog: 8 MByte and Main Programme: 23 (!!) FIRST WEDNESDAY – OPW SITES
Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. Since the Office of Public Works (OPW) has launched an initiative to encourage more people to visit the historic sites that it manages, this is only the second First Wednesday. Most sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will now be free as well on every first Wednesday. The original plan was to time limit this offer until 31 Dec 2011 and it has not FORMALLY been extended, but Dublin Castle confirmed to me that the First Wednesday is continuing.
In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this will affect the following sites:
+ The Casino, Marino (as far as I know, the Casino is closed in Winter)
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ Kilmainham Gaol
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow
Expect a large amount of people at these sites, so be early. www.rte.ie/news/2011/0706/heritage.html The list of all sites that are included nationwide is here www.rte.ie/news/2011/0706/heritage1.pdf

GOD AND SEKS: WHAT THE BIBLE REALLY SAYS – RIA
Thurs 16 Feb: 18:00 – Royal Irish Academy (Academy House), Dawson Street, Dublin 2. Apologies that I have to misspell the main word in the title of the talk. Where I wrote “seks”, there should be a three letter word starting with an “s” and ending with a “x”, that sounds like “seks”. If I properly spelled that word, you yould most likely not get this e-zine because all sorts of Spam-Filters would ruthlessly catch it.
This Academy Discourse in the Royal Irish Academy is entitled “God and Seks: what the Bible really says” by Michael Coogan. Coogan is one of the leading biblical scholars in the United States, Michael Coogan is Director of Publications for the Harvard Semitic Museum and Lecturer on Old Testament/Hebrew Bible at Harvard Divinity School.
Coogan has written many books about the bible and his newsest has the same title as he talk. Tthe Bible speaks with many voices, not one, and some of its values are no longer ours. A close look at the story of David and Bathsheba, one of the most famous and most ambiguous biblical narratives, will illustrate these issues.
It is another while until this talk will take place on 16 Feb, however Royal Irish Academy events are usually very popular and “sell out fast”. Admission is free, but you have to book your place for this event, so do it as soon as possible here

PRISON VS. NURSING HOMES – PUT ME IN PRISON!
Last week I found a news update on the Facebook Page of a friend that made me think about the odd world we create. He wrote:
“We should place the elderly in prisons. They will get a shower a day, video surveillance in case of problems, three meals a day, access to a library, computer, TV, gym, doctors on-site, free medication if needed.
And we should put criminals in nursing homes. They have cold meals, lights off at 7pm, two showers a week, live in a smaller room and pay rent at EUR 4,000 a month!!! It’s pretty sad that we treat prisoners better than the elderly.”
Bad enough that the service is so shockingly bad as a normal standard, but then some nursing home managers make it even worse: “reckless abandonment of residents and theft of money from clients. (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/2012/0126/1224310759210.html)
