Hi all!

I am back from the Christmas Markets in Germany and looking forward to the Irish Christmas Markets. I hope you had a great weekend last week and benefitted from the much earlier sending of the Dublin Event Guide last Friday. For a number of reasons I wasn’t able to do any pre-work this week so the start time of writing this issue was 19:00 last night. Unfortunately that probably means that it will be with you quite late again. Apologies, but I hope you will still enjoy it.
[ad]
There are BIG developments coming up at Dublin Event Guide Headquarters and I dare to say that I have no doubt that you will be happy about these developments. All will be revealed in the second half of January, but believe me it is BIG! :-) Feel free to tell your friends already that the Dublin Event Guide is getting better and better, you won’t regret it. Speaking of your friends: Think of the deprived people this Christmas that STILL don’t know about the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” and reach out to them. Just send them a mail like this:

Dear [name],
With Christmas approaching fast I thought of you today and would like to spread some Christmas cheer. This year, I decided to spare the trees and send an e-mail to wish you a Merry Christmas, but to compensate, I would like to give you an extra special and hugely valuable gift.
For some while now, I regularly receive a weekly e-zine that tells me all about the huge number of free cultural events in Dublin and I was able to arrange that this e-mail will be sent to you as well for a whole year (or even longer). Fifty-two times this year you can enjoy this gift from me and if you go to www.dublineventguide.com and fill in your name and e-mail address on the right hand side, you will start receiving this great gift on the following Friday (you don’t even have to wait until Christmas Day!).
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year full of free events in Dublin!
Yours,
[Your own name]

;-) Cut&Paste is all you have to do! Don’t wait, think of your friends NOW! :-)

During the week I got a lovely mail from a long-term reader of the Dublin Event Guide and she wrote:

Hi Joerg,
you might remember me, I lived by your guide since the beginning… I never knew what I was doing each week until Friday’s edition was out for the next week and I became a hub of information for my friends about all things free in Dublin thanks to your world of information!!
I have now moved to Melbourne, Oz, I have only been here 3 weeks but feel a huge loss without your guide and cannot seem to find anything similar for this city.. there are “What’s on in Melbourne” type websites but none that are so simple, listed week to week or specifically for free events (which I need as I’m so broke until I get a job!)
I know its a long shot but is there any chance u know of any similar sites for Melbourne or could you help me with suggestions of what I should type into Google when searching for one!!
Thank you and miss your guide, keep up the good work!!

Thanks, S.! Mails like that keep me going when it is 04:00 on a Friday morning and I have been working on it non-stop for 9 hours already and have another 10 hours or so ahead of me! I get lots of mails and I appreciate each one!

(By the way, does anybody know about a similar newsletter/website in Melbourne? I searched for it and couldn’t find anything comparable.)

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
In addition to the really inspiring things, sometimes it is just something funny or something that hopefully makes you smile that I will post here. This week it is a well done Christmas greeting from the crew of a British Navy ship. Nothing deep and no deep meaning behind it, just something that did make me smile and that might do the same to you. Thanks to Paola for sending it to me. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gTDLuYNYIs

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

This week Therese O’R, Sean S and Zelie McG donated much appreciated money to the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. These donations are important to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about or if it even helped you to save money…and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

To join the list of the much appreciated and esteemed supporters of the Dublin Event Guide, go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost.

To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more. – I am giving 25 hours every week for no pay, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. I need you to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? If you have a company that would like to sponsor the Event Guide talk to me!

BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here every time you want to purchases something, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

After I was in Germany last weekend, I have to go to lots of Christmas Markets in Dublin. Docklands, Royal Hospital Kilmainham and Dun Laoghaire are on the list. On top of that I would like to see the Dame District Market. That sounds like a busy market rush! :-)

If I had a suitable camera, I would definitely do the Photowalk in Temple Bar in Saturday. On Sunday I MIGHT try to squeeze the Dublin Flea Market in my event programme and in the evening you will find me again at the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass.

On Tuesday the Sweeney Mongrel Christmas Market sounds interesting and on Wednesday the Winter Solstice Celebration and the Trailblazer event caught my attention.

On Thursday I will be at a wedding (Big Congratulations to Patrick+Fiona!) and I am looking forward to it. If the wedding would be in danger of being boring (This one will NOT be!), a possible “escape” would be the Retro Games Night in the Exchange. :-)

I will continue to mark Christmas events with two Christmas stars “**”. ;-) …and all Christmas Markets are listed in the Saturday section.

______Dublin News______________

TOO MUCH COMING AND GOING IN GEORGE’S STREET
South Great George’s Street (off Dame Street) is a busy place these days. There is a constant coming and going. It all started when “Café Bar Deli” closed down and was replaced by the “Le Café Des Irlandais” which only nine month later was replaced by a Japanese restaurant called “Oriental Café” that is operated by the same owners that own Yamamori, but which is even more expensive. The nice little theatre space in the basement was turned into a bar, the “Izayaka Bar”, which seems to model a Japanese Bar and offers some food as well (for very high prices).
Further down the road, Shebeen Chic was forced to close by the landlord and now the new Speak Easy Café Bar (www.facebook.com/SpeakEasyCafeBar?sk=info) is in the same premises.
Across the road from the Globe, the vegetarian restaurant Juice (in 73 South Great Georges Street) is now gone as well and has been replaced by San Lorenzo’s Restaurant (www.facebook.com/pages/San-Lorenzos-Restaurant-Dublin/219830828086202?sk=info), which calls itself a “Modern Italian New York Style Restaurant”. If you ask me, this is a little too much change for one small section of a street. If you need some stability and reliability, go to Simon’s Place near the George’s Street Arcade for a coffee and say HI to Simon from me!

TEMPLE BAR FOOD MARKET BACK
The Temple Bar Food Market is back on Meeting House Square since last weekend. Evicted for a much longer time than planned due to the installation of the retractable roof umbrella’s on Meting House Square and the discovery of archaeological finds during that process, the market is back and better than ever. On a rainy day the roof now can be opened to protect all customers and stalls from the downpours. Meeting House Square will most likely now feature even more on Dublin’s cultural calendar. Check out the Temple Bar Food Market before Christmas. There is even an extra market taking place on Wed 21 Dec. The next market dates are Sat 17 Dec (10:00-16:00), Wed 21 Dec (10:00-16:00), Sat 24 Dec (10:00-14:00). blog.templebar.ie/?p=4387 And the Meeting House Square now even has its own website! All grown up! ;-) Check out meetinghousesquare.ie/

CHRISTMAS FM
I totally forgot to mention it before. So I hope you found it already: For the third year Christmas FM is back in Dublin. This time you find it in Dublin on 94.3 MHz or online at christmasfm.ie/ The station will broadcast Christmas music until 26 Dec and it’s purpose is to raise funds for a charity. All people working for it a re volunteers and this year’s charity is Focus Ireland.

CHRISTMAS STREET EXHIBITION – BEWLEY’S CAFÉ
Over 100 miniature life-like figures, created by the sculptor Paddy Campbell, are part of a seasonally themed front window and upstairs exhibition in Bewley’s Cafe, Grafton Street. The exhibition is called ‘Christmas Street’ and is for all the family. Admission is free and voluntary donations will be accepted for Heart Children Ireland, which the Paddy Campbell exhibition at Bewley’s is supporting this Christmas. The Christmas Street Exhibition can be seen every day until 06 January and all are welcome to visit.
Christmas Street features six scenarios with 100 life-like Lilliputian figures hand-made by Campbell and dressed in contemporary style. Each realistic set depicts scenes from everyday Christmas life. The scenarios include a lively view of Bewley’s and Grafton Street with crowds on the street, Teach Mor – a peek into Christmas morning in a suburban home, Bethsebea’s Bath – a modern day take on an old testament parable, The Train – homecoming passengers with parcels on a Christmas Train, and a scene showing ‘Santa asleep on the job’ – the great man’s elf helpers try frantically to wake him up as he snoozes in someone’s house on Christmas morning and children are entering the room.
There is also a second-take on Jonathan Swift’s novel Gulliver’s Travels, as ‘Jilliver’, a life sized sculpture of a 17th Century shipwrecked girl is captured on a beach by 21st Century holidaymakers. bewleys.com/2011/11/miriam-ocallaghan-launches-christmas-street-exhibition-at-bewleys-cafe-grafton-street Thanks to Mary who told me about this nice exhibition.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 9000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

** DUBLIN DOCKLANDS CHRISTMAS MARKET
08-23 Dec: 12:00-20:00 (Sat+Sun from 10:00) – George’s Dock, IFSC (next to the CHQ building). – This is one of the oldest German-style Christmas Markets in Ireland, and while you expect an age of hundreds of years if someone mentions “oldest market”, the Dublin Docklands Market is just 7 years young. However it was the first market of its type and no other markets in Dublin managed yet to do better than this granddad of Dublin Christmas Markets. You will find stalls with all type of Christmas presents and there will be food, beer and mulled wine. It is situated on the George’s Dock platform, in the CHQ building and the surrounding walkways and I like that Christmas market and go there every year. Going by recent years, the market can still be improved at a number of angles, but it is as close as it gets in Ireland to a German Christmas market. www.ddda.ie/index.jsp?p=109&n=341&i=379

** 7UP WINTER WONDERLAND – ROYAL HOSPITAL KILMAINHAM
08 Dec-08 Jan: Mon-Wed 15:00-22:00, Thurs-Sun 12:00-22:00. (In the final week the Winter Wonderland closes at 20:00.) – Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8 (home of the Irish Museum of Modern Art). – The Winter Wonderland at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham is many things and not just a Christmas Market. There is a Winter Wonderland Market (admission is free), an ice rink, a circus tent, cafes and there will a fun fair as well with lots of rides and attractions. It is the newest and biggest Winter Park in Ireland. I guess it is not called “Christmas Market” because it will run into January. The ice rink will replace the ice skating facilities at the RDS and at Smithfield, which do not take place this year. As you would expect, the ice rink, the circus and the fun fair rides are not free, (Tickets are available via ticketmaster for ice rink and circus.) but access to the Winter Park is free. Visits to Santa are free, which is amazing if you compare it to the daylight robbery other Santas are and children even get a small present. Parents are allowed to take pictures of their children with Santa with their own cameras as well if they wish. All very fair and friendly! There are even free shuttle buses (until Christmas Eve) for ticket holders for the Circus and the ice rink. What more would you want. If you come by public transport or on foot, it is just 5 minutes from Heuston station. WINTER SOLSTICE CELEBRATION
Wed 21 Dec: 18:30-20:30 – Complex Arts Centre on Smithfield Square, Dublin 7.
On Wednesday the Winter Solstice takes place, a big day in Newgrange where some lucky people hope to see the sun peeking through the roofbox into the centre of Newgrange at dawn. It is as well the start of the winter and for us in Dublin a Winter Solstice Celebration has been organised.
Two local cultural organisations on Smithfield Square, Complex Arts and Slí An Chroí, will offer a free, public celebration of the darkest day. Last year saw the inaugural presentation of this seasonal event and this year’s edition promises to be greater. Beginning indoors with music, storytelling, poetry and seasonal trading, a traditional ceremony will bring all present together into a parade on the square where the Solstice Fire will be lit. Come and be part of a contemporary celebration of an ancient, seasonal celebration in the heart of historic Dublin. www.slianchroi.ie and www.thecomplex.ie

TRAILBLAZERS & AHA MOMENTS – SMOCK ALLEY THEATRE
Wed 21 Dec: 19:00 – Smock Alley Theatre, The Boys School, Dublin 2.
Trailblazers & Aha Moments sounds interesting: 12 trailblazers will share their ‘Aha moments’ and secret acts of non-compliance. A diverse team of change makers, artists, social entrepreneurs, provocateurs and activists talk about staying and being alive in Ireland right now. Trailblazers include Joan Freeman (Pieta House), Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh (This is how we fly and The Gloaming), Orla Tinsely (journalist and activist) and Philip McMahon (thisispopbaby).
Organised by One Wild Life & pop-up productions, this event is a rare opportunity to gain insight into why movers and shakers do what they do. You will hear how others have stepped off the beaten track to forge their own paths and perform their own inner acts of non-compliance. But most of all the evening is about looking at the possibility and potential for tapping into our current resources and evolving with and through this current sea of change. Ireland needs a population that is willing to rock the boat, stand up and be non-compliant with the status quo. The evening will showcase what is possible when individuals stop asking for permission and step into making their own dreams and ambitions a reality. Other trailblazers at this event are Amanda Coogan, Aaron Copland, Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh, Cathy O’Conor, David Hayes, Joan Freeman, John O’Donoghue, Marie Mulholland, Mick Kelly, Orla Tinsely, Michelle Darmody, Philly McMahon
This will be followed at 21:30 by a (non-free) sonic pop-up showcasing some of Ireland’s pioneering music makers. (Tickets EUR 10) with Donal Dineen, Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh, Donal Lunny, Kate Ellis, Laura Sheeran, Linda Buckley and Sean Mac Erlaine. www.facebook.com/events/160256507407338/

PLASTIC BAG LEVY MADNESS
The plastic bag levy of 15 cent was first introduced in Ireland in March 2002 and has been increased to 22 cent per bag some while later. I can hardly believe that the levy is already in place for nearly 10 years! The levy in itself is a good thing, but a recent decision of a judge gives this topic a new and worrying twist.
Dunnes Stores wasn’t happy with the charge and refused to pay it between 2004 and 2008. I am not sure anymore what there specific problem was with the charge, but since they happily took the levy from their customers, it only makes sense that they now have to pay it to revenue. The odd and shocking development, though, is that a big part of the discussion was about what is a plastic bag. Dunnes Stores said only carrier bags are plastic bags but the judge said ALL plastic bags are plastic bags. And now Dunnes will have to pay EUR 36.5m (!!!).
Why is that relevant for you and me? Well, it means now that even the flimsy little bag that you get to pack your fruit or the plastic bags that are used to pack fish or meat into now incurring the levy according to the judge John Hedigan. So the fish monger will have to throw the fish I just bought fresh into my cotton bag if I want avoid the levy? And if you buy fresh meat at the butchers counter, you have to put it in your shopping basket just wrapped in paper if you don’t want to pay 22 cent and leave a trail of meat juices (or blood) in the shop on your way to the checkout!? I am totally in favour of a carrier bag levy, but a levy on product wrapping at fresh food counters is just ridiculous. www.rte.ie/news/2011/1213/dunnes-business.html

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
