———————————————————————
Hi all!
We definitely had winter temperatures on some mornings of last week. Brrrr! The main downside of this is that at that time of the year outside festivals really come to an end (for good reasons). The last (non-free) big one is the Electric Picnic this week and I know that many of you probably will be at it. But not everyone is going and for everyone who “has been left behind”, this week’s issue of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” will be the best starting point to plan your weekend!
[ad]
I will be in London for the whole weekend for a training course. This is the reason why you get this newsletter earlier than usual. Another thing that maybe helped ;-) is that this newsletter/e-zine comes with “go-faster-stripes” this week, because with the help of the great John M. I managed to get an upgrade for my Internet connection to a very good and appropriate speed. My training in London is the reason for a somewhat shorter Dublin Event Guide. All events I came across are still included, but some explanations are shorter and simplified.
Two journalists contacted me in the last two weeks, and John Cradden from the Irish Independent wrote a brilliant article that you were able to see on Thursday (yesterday). If you missed it, check it out here: www.independent.ie/lifestyle/going-out-is-the-new-staying-in-how-you-and-the-family-can-enjoy-free-fun-2863663.html and there is another part that mentions the Dublin Event Guide too: www.independent.ie/lifestyle/i-find-it-amazing-how-many-things-are-free-in-dublin-2863664.html Thanks a lot John!!
If you are working in the field of media and could help spreading the word a bit, your help would be appreciated as well! (Could Niamh, who rang me about two weeks ago regarding an article, please contact me again? I can’t find your e-mail address anywhere!)
Every week 30-70 people join our growing Dublin Event Guide Community and it is great to see that it doesn’t stop. We are coming closer and closer to the 10,000 reader milestone and this week I upgraded my e-mail sending plan with iContact (www.icontact.com/?cobrand=318993) who I use to send this newsletter as reliably as possible. The next milestone based on the e-mail sending limits is 15,000 readers and with an upper limit of 90,000 e-mails per month, you could call me a major spammer … if the content wasn’t so valuable. ;-)
Tell your friends, colleagues, families about the Dublin Event Guide and help them to subscribe: The website is at www.dublineventguide.com where your friends can subscribe to the weekly newsletter in the sign-up form on the right. On the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide they only have to click on JOIN EMAIL LIST and while they are there, they should click on LIKE. These are the preferred methods, but if they are not convenient, then your friends can sign up as well by sending an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject SUBSCRIBE DEG.
Can you hang up this updated A4 posters in your company, corner shop, school, club?

We now more than 6200 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and it would be really great if we could be as big on Facebook as we are on this distribution list. Click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is something I added to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. This week it is a clip from the Australian X Factor audition. Emmanuel Kelly performs and while he most likely won’t win the competition, the story of his life is very moving. Let’s hope that many many children get the opportunities he got and make such good use of it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCHS6geSs-k

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
My appeal to you last week was heard and I thank you hugely for it. I upgraded the email plan last week, as I have mentioned a little further up, so the additional donations just came at the perfect time! Thank you very much to Alan G, Gerard Ph, Irial G, Louise M, Milena V, Fanny T, Clodagh O’C, Fiona F, Yvonne S, Loretta K and Lauren O’R. I am sooooo grateful!
If you want to join the list of the much appreciated supporters of the Dublin Event Guide, go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost.
To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more. – I am giving 25 hours every week for no pay, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. I need you to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? You can give much more than EUR 12 or you can give less, but EUR 12 is a big help for me and not too much for you. If you have a company that would like to sponsor the Event Guide talk to me!
www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here to start your purchase, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

After the really really busy weekend last week, this weekend is decisively quieter. You could think it has to do with the children being back in school and therefore the country turning back to work, but I think the reason for the peace and quiet this week is the Electric Picnic. If I remember the numbers right, then about 30,000 people are expected in Stradbally, Co Laois and if you take sooo many people out of their normal routine, then most event organisers would shy away from running an event this weekend.
I will be away myself and so I will let you browse through the event list without influencing you (too much). ;-) Only two things I will mention: I would be at the Liffey Swim on Saturday and would DEFINITELY be at the free Sugar Club gig on Saturday evening when Kevin Doyle, Ireland’s best Elvis Presley tribute singer, will sing a few Elvis songs but will put the emphasis a lot more on the earlier days of his singing career. When Soul and Rhythm&Blues was their thing. Kevin won’t do it alone, but he will be on stage with 17 other musicians. I know them all and can tell you that every single one is amazingly brilliant. So, if you are not going to the Electric Picnic, go to where I would be: Sugar Club on Saturday evening. Admission is free.

DUBLIN LIVING AWARDS
Alchemy Event Management together with sponsors Vodafone, Metro Herald and 98FM are running a new award for businesses and organisations in Dublin. The “Dublin Living Awards” will showcase the businesses and organisations that make Dublin a great place to live, work and visit. The deadline for nominations is the 09 September and if you have a business (e.g. bars, restaurants, boutiques, gyms, spas, hotels, restaurants etc) have a look at the website at www.dublinlivingawards.ie to see if you would like to put your business forward. There are some non-business categories (e.g. “Outstanding Contribution to Dublin Life” or “People’s Choice Award), where you might want to nominate organisations or individuals that contribute greatly to the life in Dublin.
One the recruitment/nomination phase is over, a number of judges will shortlist the entries and then you will have an opportunity to vote for your favourite finalists to decide the winner. So check out www.dublinlivingawards.ie (For the business categories there is a EUR 30 fee for a nomination. For the non-business related categories there is apparently no fee.)
WHO KNOWS IRELAND BEST – AUDIENCE REQUIRED
You can be part of the live studio audience for the new game show ‘Who Knows Ireland Best’. The show is presented by Derek Mooney and two teams are set against each other to answer questions about Ireland. Contestants are employees, sports clubs, hobby groups in teams of three, for example Cabbies will play against Footballers, Nurses against Barkeepers and Firemen against Dancers. Big Mountain Productions have asked 1000 people 100 questions about everything from their manners and morals to their hopes and expectations, so the questions are more about opinions than facts.
The game show will be produced for RTE and a studio audience is required for the recordings in RTE in Donnybrook on 13, 14 + 15 Sept. If you would like to be part of that live studio audience, go to www.bigmountainproductions.com/news-012.html and download the application form, fill it in and send it to whoknowsirelandbest@bigmountainproductions.com or alternatively phone Katherine on 01 208 4643.

STENA LINE FAST FERRY TO DUN LAOGHAIRE ON “WINTER” BREAK
Stena Line has announced that the HSS fast craft Dún Laoghaire-Holyhead service will be end on 13 September and might resume in April or May of next year. The company said the decision was taken because of the high cost of operating the Stena Explorer, which had lost them money for years. The two ferries from Dublin Port to Holyhead will not be affected. 53 employees are affected by this decision. www.rte.ie/news/2011/0830/stena.html
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 9000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.
SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT – NATIONAL BOTANIC GARDENS
Thurs 08 Sept – 21 Oct: National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9

The Botanical Gardens give the artists a rare opportunity to realise large scale work. It also gives the public the opportunity to ramble and find some sculptures in the most unusual places. Over 120 sculptures will be displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House, and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the gallery above the Visitors’ Centre. Participating artists this year include Emma Bourke, Frances Brosnan, Michelle Byrne, Cathy Carman, Susan Cuffe, Cliodna Cussen, Mike Duhan, Seamus Dunbar, Seamus Gill, Catherine E Greene, Joe Hogan, Petr Holecek, Catherine Keenan, Eva Kelly, Ayelet Lalor, Fidelma Massey, Adam May, Brid Ni Rinn, Niall O’Neill, Brigitta Seck, Niamh Synnott, Grainne Watts, and Thomas Wollen. www.botanicgardens.ie/news/events.htm
PLASTIC HOUSE EXHIBITION
02-04 Sept: Fri 02 Sept from 19:00, Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00 – Plastic House, 26 Spencer Street North, East Wall, Dublin 3. – The Plastic House, an award-winning project by Architecture Republic, turns into an art gallery for the weekend. “The theme of the exhibition is the act of making domestic space; investigating innovative ways of housing the modern family in all its variants. As society develops and evolves, the accepted standard of the family house is no longer as relevant as it once was, and as a society we must adapt and grow our housing stock in ways which meet the challenges of this new orthodoxy.
The exhibition will explore a variety of refurbishments, extensions, conversions and new-build housing on urban-infill sites. To reflect the increased prevalence of adaptation and re-use in recent years, it will be hosted in a converted Victorian terrace house which has been re-imagined to provide a contemporary modern dwelling – The Plastic House.”
ABSOLUT VIS10N – SOUTH STUDIOS; DUBLIN 8
07-12 Sept: 11:00-19:00 – Laundry Room of South Studios, Dublin 8.
As part of the Fringe Festival, the sponsor ABSOLUT Vodka has commissioned 10 global artists to use a 2.5 metre tall replica of the Absolut bottle as their canvas. An exhibition of the work will run from 07-12 Sept and you will have the opportunity to attend the official launch on 07 Sept. And when you come to the exhibition, you will have the opportunity to create your own Absolut Vis10n as an art station will be set-up with art supplies and blank bottles. Follow in the footsteps of some of the 20th Century’s most influential artists Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst and Louise Bourgeois, when you get the opportunity to design your own bottle. The official launch will take place on Wed at 19:00 and if you want to attend, go to the Vodka Ireland Facebook page and reserve a place on the guestlist:
NOTES ON THE MISSING OH – PROJECT ARTS CENTRE
01 Sept – 30 Oct: 11:00-20:00 – Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bat, Dublin 2. – The Project Arts Centre invites to “Notes on the Missing Oh”, a visual art exhibition by Adrià Julià, that is supported by the Instituto Cervantes.
“Revisiting sites, areas and characters from a 20 year old screenplay, and one of the biggest financial and cultural flops in the history of cinema, this three screen installation is a portrait with a subject as complex as it is mysterious. Adria Julia’s beautifully filmed sequences are meditative, composed more through the grammar of photography than film to create a startling document of time.” www.projectartscentre.ie/programme/whats-on/1316-notes-on-the-missing-oh
GROUND ZERO 360 – THE EXHIBITION – COLLINS BARACKS & RDS
18 Aug – 01 Oct: National Museum, Collins Barracks, Dublin
06 Sept – 22 Sept: RDS, Library, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 (Open: 10:00-17:00)
I mentioned this exhibition already last week and this week another venue was added. The RDS Library will be part of it now as well.
On September 11, 2001, New York City was shaken to its core when two jet airliners crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. In the wake of the chaos, New York-based Irish photographer Nicola McClean tried to capture the confusion and panic that surrounded her. In 2011, McClean brings her stunning collection of images to the public for the first time. Through harrowing visuals, chilling audio clips and a unique panoramic installation, Ground Zero 360 invites you to step into the past and feel what eight million New Yorkers were feeling in the days that followed the attacks. SOUL + RHYTHM&BLUES + ELVIS – SUGAR CLUB
Sat 03 Sept: 20:00-23:00 – The Sugar Club, Lwr Leeson St., Dublin 2
Some of you know that I sing in the backing choir of the best Elvis Tribute Band. Kevin Doyle heads this band in the role of Elvis Presley and he is just brilliant. But there has been a past that had nothing to do with Elvis and it is time to go back to the roots and mix all influences a bit. On Sat Kevin and the Band will be in the Sugar Club for a Soul + Rhythm&Blues + a sprinkling of Elvis gig. An 18 piece band with full brass section and backing choir will perform for you and all is free. I normally would DEFINITELY be there as well, BUT next weekend I am in London for a training course. Darn! I hope, though, that many of you will be at the gig and will tell me all about it afterwards! :-) Put it in your calendar, it will be a super gig! www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=250679961619740

PHOTOVISION TRADE ROADSHOW – CROKE PARK
Tues 06 Sept: 11:00-18:00 – Croke Park Stadium, Hogan Suite, Jones Road, Dublin 3
This is a tradeshow and therefore not an event that is suitable for everyone, but I know that a good few of you will be interested. Have a look at the exhibitor list and find via this link as well the vast amount of free seminars: www.forwardevents.co.uk/roadshows/dublin/exhibitors-list.html Tickets are free for trade visitors, but you should register now!
DUBLIN CONTEMPORARY – EARLSFORT TERRACE
Dublin Contemporary has been making a lot of big waves. People talk about it, many were looking forward to this event and the organisers proudly claim “Dublin Contemporary 2011 is one of the most ambitious art exhibitions ever staged in Ireland. Dublin Contemporary will take place for eight weeks from 06 Sept- 31 Oct and will present the work of Irish-based artists, alongside leading artists from around the globe.” The theme of the event is “Terrible Beauty – Art, Crisis, Change & The Office of Non-Compliance” and as if the confusing and even slightly irritating title is meant to be an indicator for the character of the complete event, I was prepared to punch someone when trying to find information on their website at www.dublincontemporary.com because the website really annoyed me. Not many manage to seriously annoy me, but if I have to search for 20 minutes to find some crucial information about the planned (free) events, then something is wrong.
Don’t get me wrong, it is not that there is too little information on the website, there is LOADS of information available. So much that you experience information overload while looking for ONE simple (and non-existing) list that lists all events and with it the relevant charges. I was NOT successful, so for that reason, I will leave it to you to make sense to the mess of a website. I will just summarise for you what the whole thing is about as far as I can see: Dublin Contemporary 2011 will take place from 06 Sept-31 Oct and will feature more than 90 Irish and international artists from five continents. The main exhibition hub is the former UCD building next to the National Concert Hall on Earlsfort Terrace. Further venues are Iveagh Gardens, the Annex to the Earlsfort Terrace Building, Douglas Hyde Gallery, Hugh Lane Gallery, National Gallery of Ireland and the Royal Hibernian Academy.
There are a few talks and lectures which are allegedly free, but to find these events you have to do Trojan work. Apart from these few free events, the exhibition stands out due to its amazingly high admission charges. EUR 8 for a child, EUR 15 for an adult and EUR 35 for a 3-day pass is definitely a premium price and considering that the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht is sponsoring this event, I would have expected a lower admission charge. I will most likely not be among the 150,000 people the exhibition expects to attract!

DUBLIN FASHION FESTIVAL – DUBLIN CITY
08-11 Sept: Dublin City Centre
Promising title! But when you check who is organising the event, then you will understand that there is maybe a different driver than what you expect from a Fashion Festival. Not that this driver is a wrong one, but the organisers, the BID (Dublin City Business Improvement District) are trying to get people to come to the City Centre to spend money there, so the passion is not directed at fashion, but a fashion festival is more a vehicle. Unfortunately the programme is not yet available (as of Thurs 01 Sept) and only a view discount offers from different shops are listed. Hopefully the programme will make it soon onto the site at www.dff.ie/news/programme-download/ and then you should be able to find out what is happening. Allegedly Thursday is the “Fashion by Night” day with the promise “Special after-hours events will be hosted by shops across the city between 18:00-23:00 on Thurs 08 Sept. The city will spring to life with exciting on-street and in store events. You can also enjoy special offers and menus in bars, cafés and restaurants across town. ______This is odd!!______________
Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
BORD GAIS KNOWS HOW TO SPEND YOUR MONEY…ON CHAIRS
Bord Gais, the Irish gas company which is still part owned by the state, has recently announced that the gas prices will increase by 12%. This is quite a big increase and for people in financial trouble, this news is not good. There seems to be a real basis and justification for this increase and similar price increases can be seen in other countries, but nevertheless it will cause pain for a good few customers.
A part of Bord Gais is now moving into new offices on Warrington Place and this morning first broadsheet.ie (www.broadsheet.ie/2011/08/30/this-will-make-you-very-upset/) and then thejournal.ie (jrnl.ie/213861) reported that Bord Gais did spend 100s of thousands on…office chairs.
Office chairs for EUR 650 a piece is definitely slightly excessive. If we assume that chair is meant to last maybe 10 years, it might be less shocking even if you could find a very good office chair for a fraction of the EUR 650. But if nothing else, it was just plain stupid to bring these chairs through the front door of the building in broad day light!
TAX DISC FOR FEMALE NIGHT WORKERS
“This is odd” stories are not limited to Ireland and this week I found a really odd story from my home country: The female night workers in the street trade in a city in Germany, now have to buy a EUR 6 tax disc from a machine like a Pay&Display meter to be allowed to carry out their trade with their male customers during the night.
