Hi all!

Did you watch any news over the last week or read any newspaper? Doesn’t it seem as if things are getting worse and worse? If you just watch or read the news OR if you were made redundant recently, then I can understand where you are coming from and why you feel like that.

But today I want to look at something else that is current reality as well. Today I want to remind you of people that do wonderful things for all of us so that we can enjoy free events and I think they deserve a huge reward and this huge reward is that we come to their events. Break out of the negativity of newspapers at least for a little while and go to some free events. This “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” tells you all that the Greater Dublin area has to offer and I hope you will get a chance to make use of it.

One shining example is the team of Crackedlight Productions. This theatre company decided to provide a free theatre/play for all of us and it is brilliant! I was there last night and you HAVE to go. Crackedlight Productions are performing “Romeo & Juliet (Unplugged)” in Ranelagh Gardens and they are doing a super job.

I am not a Shakespeare expert by any means, but I enjoyed their performance entirely and the guys and girls deserve a “full house” ;-) at their open air performance. Check out the Saturday section for details!

I promised them to tell you and I do it wholeheartedly. Support the free events that take place and enjoy the positivity that they send out. Our little Ireland is definitely not completely broken yet as long as we have initiatives like that!

And there are many more to come: This weekend Dun Laoghaire hosts the Festival des Bateaux and in Dublin the Latin American Festival takes place and then next week the People’s Festival, the Chalk Festival and the Ukulele Festival will all take place in Dun Laoghaire.

I know, all these things don’t make the economy better, but guess what, if you feel good about life, you will be a LOT better prepared to face up to all the other day to day challenges!

This week’s “Feel Good Slot” video is just a simple quote. I heard it during the week and am not sure yet who said it originally, but I assume it was a long time ago, because the newer version would use “person” not “man”. I will leave it in the original, though. The quote is
“Circumstances don’t make a man, they merely reveal him.”
I thought of it in the context of the Presidential Election in Ireland and the happenings in the context. You could apply it to the people that were involved in the riots in London as well. But I think even with the current economic challenges and how we react to it, we could use it to remind ourselves that what happens around us doesn’t make us or in other words, we should not ALLOW circumstances to “make” us. If you are an achiever or a success oriented person, then challenges will not stop you from being successful. They will only little deviations from your path and won’t stop you!

Another very busy weekend and there is no end of it. The next two or three weekends will be like that! I can’t wait! :-)

Today I will go to the Fireworks in Dun Laoghaire at 22:00 of the weather is ok.

Then on Saturday you will find me at the Festival des Bateaux in Dun Laoghaire and if I can manage I might have a look at the Traditional Building Skills Exhibition in Farmleigh House as well and maybe even at the Viking Festival.
On Sunday I will definitely go to the Latin American Festival, the Arts, Crafts and Food Market at the Amphiteatre will be my destination.
On Wednesday the Eichmann Trial talk in TCD sounds very interesting, but unfortunately it takes place at 13:00. Not for me unfortunately. In the evening is an interesting Drumming Workshop. I won’t be able to go, but I would love to do it. ;-)

On Thursday Tower Records celebrate their 18th birthday with lots and lots of In-Store performances and in the evening the Dublin Skillshare event AND the “Power of Gold” Talk in the Science Gallery are tempting.

For Friday have a look at the 24 act Love Music Hate Racism event. Some of it is free.

DUBLIN LATIN AMERICA FESTIVAL – TICKETS
In the Friday and Saturday section of this newsletter you can read all about the Latin American Festival that is taking place this weekend. Two friends and supporters of the Dublin Event Guide are heavily involved in this festival. Miren is a volunteer and Raffael Abarca is one of the festival coordinators. And having friends in high places will benefit you today: The Dublin Latin Folk Festival will take place in the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar at 16:00 and at 20:00 tomorrow afternoon. “Raices de Tungurahua”, a folk group will merge European and Ecuadorian Cultures through dance and music. Tickets are EUR 7 (and you get the admission to a film screening for free when you buy a ticket). Tickets are available at the door. The organisers of the Latin American Festival have made two pairs of tickets available for the Dublin Latin Folk Festival performance at 16:00 on Saturday. INTERNATIONAL TANGO FESTIVAL – TICKET COMPETITION
From 18-21 August the International Tango Festival in Ireland will take place in Dublin. The 9th International Tango Festival is dedicated to all lovers of Argentine dance, music and culture. It provides a wonderful opportunity to learn tango with top class teachers, enjoy Argentine music and theatre, taste traditional food, sing Tango songs and learn Spanish!
Compadrito Tango, the wonderful tango teachers Simona & Hernan and their teams have made a pair of tickets available for the main event of the International Tango Festival. The event is called Tango Querido and will take place on Saturday 20 August at 20:30 in the Garda Club, Harrington Street, Dublin 8. The guest orchestra “Quinteto Tango Extremo” will play Tango music for you and later DJ Johan Steyn will keep the party going while you can dance Tango for 5 hours (non-stop if you wish!). DUBLIN CITY SURVEY – YOUR DUBLIN YOUR VOICE
Until 31 July you were able to help Dublin City with your opinion about the city and four EUR 25 vouchers were made available for survey participants that came from the Dublin Event Guide. I am glad I was able to help again gathering opinions about our city and I hear that in total more than 2000 people took part again, which is a great result. More prizes will be drawn among the participants with the top prize being a helicopter flight over Dublin. But the team around the survey did tell me already who won the four EUR 25 vouchers and the winners are: Caroline Haupt, Cornelia Koller, Lauren O’Rourke and Rita Ryan. Congratulations!

ROMEO & JULIET (Unplugged) – RANELAGH GARDENS / IVEAGH GARDENS
Writing about this event is a bit of a challenge in a day-by-day schedule because there are number of performances, but they do take place at different times. In addition I was soooo impressed when I went to it last night, that just hiding inbetween lots of other events is not good enough. So, for that reason, you find the information here and then a brief reminder on EVERY day this play is performed. The guys were hoping for a total of 2500 visitors over the 11 performances, but I think we should help them to double that number – at least! A cast of nearly 30 people is performing for 11 nights for free for you. That definitely deserves your attention!
When I went to school, we didn’t do Shakespeare, so I had only a rough idea of the story, and as a foreigner the Old English is fascinating but at times not totally clear. But nevertheless, I enjoyed it entirely and understood enough to follow it completely.
Cracked Light Productions (www.facebook.com/crackedlightproductions) is the theatre company behind this free performance and because the Ranelagh Arts Festival got cancelled they decided to perform Romeo&Juliet anyway in an Unplugged version in Ranelagh Gardens. When later the OPW offered the use of Iveagh Gardens they jumped at the opportunity and now it runs from 09-14 Aug in Ranelagh Gardens and then from 17-21 Aug in Iveagh Gardens.
To get to Ranelagh Gardens, take the LUAS to the Ranelagh stop, go under the overpass and go through the arch into the Gardens. Walk to the other end of the park and you will find the right spot. For Iveagh Gardens you probably best enter at the Harcourt Street site and I am sure you will find it easily then. For better descriptions check the Cracked Light facebook page. Bring a blanket and don’t let even rain stop you (plastic ponchos are available). When I was there (together with at least 150 other people), it started raining, but the cast kept going and we just covered underneath rain coats and umbrellas. Nothing could stop us. ;-)

DUN LAOGHAIRE FESTIVAL WEEKENDS
The Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures (FOWC) is not taking place this year, as I am sure you know by now. When it was announced late last year, Dun Laoghaire Council sources said that instead the FOWC there will be a whole number of smaller events taking place. Myself and many others had serious doubts about that, but I have to say that it did come true. Ok, it is not Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Council that deserves the praise for (all of) it, BUT the end result is positive. So this week the Festival des Bateaux and a Flower Show will be in Dun Laoghaire. Next week the volunteer organised and independent People’s Festival (www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=240261979330685) will take place and in addition to that the Ukulele Festival and the Chalk Festival will tempt us to Dun Laoghaire. So for me, this weekend and next weekend are Dun Laoghaire Festival Weekends. :-)

SAND SCULPTURES IN DUBLIN CASTLE

URINATION IN DUBLIN
In their wisdom, Dublin City Council has decided to spend EUR 50,000 on public toilets FOR MEN ONLY! At two locations in the City Centre (Camden Street and Westmoreland Street). I agree that urination on the street is a (smelly) problem, but I don’t really see why the pubs should not be responsible to provide sufficient toilets AND I don’t understand why toilets are only provided for men. The Irish Times writes “Dublin City Council said it had no plans to provide toilets for women, as it did not experience problems with women urinating on the city streets.” Well there is a surprise! Imagine! Luckily women are a bit more sophisticated then men. :-o

FESTIVAL DES BATEAUX – DUN LAOGHAIRE
Fri-Sun 12-14 Aug: 14:00-22:00/10:00-20:00 – Dun Laoghaire Harbour & Town Centre. From 12-14 August, the “Festival des Bateaux” in Dun Laoghaire will celebrate the only international stop on French “Solitaire du Figaro” yacht race, a race over 3,390 km. Dun Laoghaire will celebrate with fireworks, music, sights, sounds, foods and joie de vivre of France. The festival features a wide variety of French themed events and attractions. Highlights will include a grand opening ceremony, fireworks on Friday, a festival village with public access to visiting boats, a colourful festival market, a festival stage at Harbour Plaza and a closing ceremony as boats depart on Sunday 14 August. Admission is free. – The Solitaire du Figaro is a solo multi-stage yacht race created in 1970. The unique character of the race, the presence of great solo sailors and it being open to amateurs, has made it one of the most cherished races in French sailing. For 2011, the single-handed sailors will face a 1,695 nautical mile race in four legs. Starting on 31st July the race will set off from Perros-Guirec in France , further stops are Caen, Dun Laoghaire, the harbour of Les Sables d’Olonne and the race will end on 24 Aug in Dieppe.

LATIN AMERICAN FESTIVAL – TEMPLE BAR

The Dublin Latin American Festival will take place from Fri 11 Aug until Sun 21 Aug. The festival will bring some Latin American magic to Dublin offers film screenings, a food and craft market, music and dance.
In essence the festival consists of two weekends with Friday-Sunday activities and events. Some events are free, others are not and for some events it is not totally clear if they are free or not. Have a look at the website www.lancifestival.com for some further information. The organisers have a nicer looking brochure put together, but surprisingly you can’t get it from the website. BRAY BETTER THAN DUBLIN?
The Bray Summer Fest is over and it was great! For four weeks, Bray really put on a super festival with lots of bands on the band stand at the sea front every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Not just one, but TWO really impressive fireworks. A Family Day, an Africa Day, a fun fair, some sports events, workshops and a whole afternoon of airshow (plus a day of rehearsal for the airshow). Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it?
Bray must be BIG!? Or Rich? Well, actually neither! Bray has just about 32,000 inhabitants and while not poor, is definitely less affluent than some parts of Dublin. So, Dublin is about 46 times bigger than Bray and the big industry and shops are in Dublin, not in Bray. But do we have free festivals/culture/entertainment in Dublin that are 46 times more than in Bray? Surprisingly not!
There has not been a firework in Dublin for FIVE years. Airshow? Never! Regular free gigs outdoors provided by Dublin City? If we consider the factor 46, then Dublin would have to provide 46×3 days with 3 bands every evening. That would be 138 days of gigs and 414 band slots.
So does that mean Bray is better than Dublin when it comes to festivals and entertainment? It seems so! What do you think about that? Why can Bray do it, but Dublin can’t?
Sure, I know that there are a number of events in Dublin that are financed by Dublin City, but are they really on the same scale than the events in Bray considering the factor 46? Send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with your opinion! www.braysummerfest.com/
