Hi all!

Last week’s big event related news was the surprise cancellation of the People’s Festival just 14 hours before the Festival was mean to start. Many were very disappointed about the cancellation and a lot of confusion (and speculation) resulted from it. I only found out around midnight from the great Darragh Doyle. Darragh is a loyal Dublin Event Guide Subscriber and huge supporter and he has his own Event related website. Read more about him in the Dublin News section! More about the events and circumstances around the People’s Festival can be found in the “This is Odd!” section at the end of this newsletter.

It seems to me that the list of events I find is getting longer and longer every week and the result is that I spend more and more time on writing this e-zine/newsletter. This is bad for me AND bad for me. Last week I sent the newsletter to all 9500+ of you at 16:30 and then the sending process was delayed for unforeseen technical reasons until 17:30 in some cases. That is MUCH too late and I am fully aware of it. So, my big goal for the coming weeks is to bring this time forward. I would prefer to have it with you at around 13:00 at the latest, but I am not sure yet how to achieve that. Another thing that I need to consider is that between now and the middle of October, I will be away for a total 3 weekends. I will make sure that you will get the Dublin Event Guide every week, but I might have to shorten some sections, reduce the events or drop occasionally a whole section (e.g. Dublin News or This is Odd!). The coming weekend is full of events and there is definitely something for everyone. In Malahide the first time free, the Salute Military Vehicle and Re-enactment show will take place, if you want more culture and nature, then the Dublin Garden Square Day is for you, if (Irish) music is your thing, then the Seisun for Somalia in Grafton Street will make you happy. Photography? Go to the People’s Photography Exhibition. You want to learn more? Go to Which Course 2011 in the RDS. Animation is shown at the Blackrock Festival and the Print Museum has a Family Day as well. And THIS is only a small subsection of the Sat+Sun events.

I didn’t even mention the Street Feast, Blackrock Family Day, a variety of events on Sunday in the Botanic Gardens or Meditation on Sunday evening.

Who could honestly not find something in that impressive list?

I will definitely have a look at the Which Course exhibition and would like to go to Malahide to the Salute show. The People’s Photography exhibition is a must as well, but after that I can’t do much more. Luckily a good few of the events are taking place on Saturday AND Sunday.

I will be away next weekend, so if there are any events you want to tell me about, they have to be with my by Tuesday!! Keep that in mind!

The Musical Youth Foundation is hosting a very special “No Tent Required Funk & Soul Weekender” at The Grand Social (35 Liffey Street, Dublin 1) on Fri 02 Sept and Sat 03 Sept to help raise funds for their “Guitars for kids” programmes. This is your chance to witness some truly amazing musical performers while helping a very worthy cause at the same time. On Friday “Proudfoot”, an 8 piece band that combines soul, rock and funk, and “Wyvern Lingo”, a 3-piece girl band who won the Rising Stars Award at the Dublin City Soul Festival will be on stage from 20:00.

TRIBUTE TO BOB MARLEY – THE ACADEMY
Tonight Midnight at The Academy presents “Legend – A celebration in The Life & Music of Bob Marley”. It is the 30th Anniversary Tour. Doors are at 23:15 and the band is on stage at midnight. Tickets are EUR 15. Legend will be a celebration of the life and music of Bob Marley, featuring an 8 piece band with brass section playing all of Bob Marley & The Wailers hits. Video footage and visuals will be shown on the big screen with the voice recordings of Marley projected around the Academy. If you are a fan of Bob Marley this is a must-go event for you. We all know that Dublin is small and it sometimes feels that everybody knows everybody, I am sure you can imagine that the non-commercial “event blogging” world in Ireland is small as well and since this Dublin Event Guide is part of that world, the people in the “event blogging” world know each other and importantly support each other. Today I want to mention a few who are friends, but as well supporters at times. The best known is the brilliantly connected and super nice Darragh Doyle. Darragh is well liked and is definitely the one and only true connector (someone who connects people to people) in Dublin. Darragh is behind the Event website www.yay.ie and is supported by two other friends of mine and wonderful people: Stephanie Francis and Niamh Smith. DUBLIN CONTEMPORARY – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Dublin Contemporary 2011 is a major large-scale exhibition of emerging and established contemporary visual art taking place between September 6th and October 31st 2011. It is one of the most ambitious exhibitions ever staged in Ireland – a city-wide effort with more than 100 Irish and international artists and lots of venues. Dublin Contemporary is now looking for volunteers who help with a variety of jobs for a few days or up to 3 months. You should be passionate and interested in the opportunity. The Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour takes place every Friday at the Irish Writers’ Centre. Over 100 Irish traditional musicians and dancers will be performing in Grafton Street to help Concern save lives in the horn of Africa: Concern’s East Africa Appeal is targeting the urgent humanitarian needs of more than 10 mio people in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. The money collected at “Seisiún for Somalia” goes to the East Africa Appeal. Sounds like a good event.
But WHY oh, WHY can’t Concern support these fundraising events by at least mentioning it on their website and/or facebook page. It can’t be THAT difficult to support the 100 people by at least supporting their efforts of letting the world know.

The Cold 100 are performing in The Midnight Hour series of events and the website says “Free before 22:30, Club entry applies after 22:30 (Thur/Fri/Sat).” But the gig only has doors at 23:30. Does that mean you need to get into Whelan’s before 22:30 and then just stay in a different area until the doors open at 23:30 for the gig?

DUBLIN CITY TRIATHLON – PHOENIX PARK
Sun 28 Aug: 08:00- 14:00 – Phoenix Park.
The Dublin City Triathlon takes place again this Sunday. It starts very early with a 1500m swim in the Liffey at the Garda Boat Club (Chapelizod Rd, Islandbridge, just outside Phoenix Park), then a 40km cycle in laps around Phoenix Park follows and finally a 10km run in Phoenix Park will conclude the event. A shorter Triathlon is available for less trained athletes. 930 people will take place in the Triathlon and all of the Irish Triathlon elite is expected to participate. Obviously this is not an event for everybody, so the reason for mentioning it here, is because you might want to watch the athletes and cheer them on. STREET FEAST
Sun 28 Aug: Anywhere!
Street Feast is a day of local lunches across Ireland on 28 August, hosted by you and your neighbours. They can be anywhere really – out on the street, in a local park or in your front garden. The purpose is to celebrate your local community and meet new people who live near you. It is a great idea, but I think it still needs to filter through. On the website streetfeast.ie/ only 16 Street Feasts are listed for Dublin (and at least 3 are organised by restaurants or with another event). There could be many more that are not officially “declared”, but wouldn’t it be great if there were hundreds!? Maybe just get together with your friends this year and plan a proper Street Feast for next year!? ;-)

And Malyalee is the term used to refer to the native speakers of Malayalam, the language in Kerala. (There are more than 5,000 Malayalee families in Ireland!) Now all should be clear! ;-)

MEDITATION MOB – TCD

THE CRITICAL TAKE – IFI FILM CLUB

A free monthly film club is taking place at the IFI and the next event will be on Monday. Each month the IFI pre-selects three films, ranging from new releases to old classics, and then gathers for a discussion at the end of the month. In addition to this, three industry experts are on hand at each meeting to give their opinions on each of the films, before opening it out to the floor for a wider discussion.
In August, the three very new releases to be discussed are “In a Better World”, winner of Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Academy Awards; “Knuckle”, Ian Palmer’s study of the tradition of bare-knuckle boxing in the Traveller community; and “Project Nim”, the new documentary from the Oscar-winning maker of Man on Wire about an ill-fated experiment to teach a chimpanzee to communicate with humans.
The three panellists will be Director of Project Arts Centre Willie White, Script Consultant and Arts Journalist Mary Kate O’Flanagan and IFI Head of Education Alicia McGivern. Even if you haven’t seen all three films, come along and join in the debate.
