Hi all!

After the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” was featured on “Capital D”, the RTE 1 TV programme about events taking place in Dublin, immediately a many of you looked it up and joined our Dublin Event Guide Community. But then throughout the whole last week there was steady stream of more people joining in and I have to admit that I am thrilled with that.

When I started writing this weekly e-mail I had never expected that it would grow that big, but there was always one thing that I wanted to achieve: I always wanted to help more people to enjoy culture for free AND at the same time I wanted to help event organisers who spend a great deal of time and effort in running events to get the reward they deserve by having a full house. We are now more than 9000 people and I will do what ever I can to find thousands more that want to join our community. I am convinced that there are more than 9000 people in Dublin that would benefit from knowing where all free events happen and I will work hard on reaching them.

The next few paragraphs I already had included last week, but with your permission I will leave them here for one more week, considering that there are so many people that found us only during the week:

If this is the first issue of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” you are receiving then you might be surprised how long it is. There are between 80 and 100 free events that I find every week and they could be gigs, festivals, talks & lectures or exhibitions. But I don’t recommend that you intend to read every word in this e-mail magazine. Instead I suggest that you look at the different sections, see what you like and read where you discover something interesting. If you read a newspaper you probably don’t read every single article, but use the headlines to find out what interests you and only read that. Do the same thing with this long newsletter and the huge amount of information becomes VERY manageable.

To find all the information, I crawl/trawl and search through approx. 400 webpages every Thursday night and because the more than 9000 readers are a very diverse, multicultural and multinational community, the interests are very varied. If it is free and if I can find it, I will let you know about it and then you can decide if you will go to the event or not. Many people send me mails and tell me what amazing events they found through this Dublin Event Guide and maybe you will find a couple of new things to do to. Dublin is full of culture and entertainment and a LOT of it is free, so if you want to enjoy Dublin for free, you found the perfect resource!

This weekend is Oxegen, so any event organiser of a big events will avoid this weekend. For that reason and because of the core holiday period, the number of events is a little smaller than normal. However, next weekend “Made in Temple Bar” and a few other big events will take place, so take this week to recover. ;-)

I will possibly go to the Bray Summer Fest at some stage this weekend, the band line up for tonight and tomorrow night sounds really good.

On Sunday I am tempted to go to the Car Boot Sale in Kilternan and maybe to the Food Market at Farmleigh House.

On Tuesday the Bella Italia Street Party in Bray sounds good and on Wednesday I would go to the Marie Currie book launch in the Alliance Francaise if my French was good enough. On Thursday the Bastille Day is another French-flavoured event that is tempting.

But then, Thursday is my night for writing this Event Guide. I am still trying to send it earlier reliably, not just every now and then, but that is difficult because it takes so long to write.

SWING DANCE SOCIAL NIGHT “ROUTE 66” – ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Wed 06 July 20:00 – Turk’s Head, Parliament Street, Dublin 2
Route 66 is a social night of Swing dancing that takes place every Wednesday in the Turk’s Head. There’s an easy drop-in lesson for beginners from 20:00 to 20:45, followed by social dancing until 23:00 (or sometimes later!) featuring all the best Swing music from the 1920s to today, including everything from Duke Ellington to Peggy Lee, from Glenn Miller to Ella Fitzgerald, from Frank Sinatra to even Michael Bublé! On Wed 06 July, Route 66 celebrated their 7th anniversary and on top of that Jamie, the organiser/teacher/DJ, celebrated 10 years of teaching Swing in Dublin. OPW WAIVES ENTRY CHARGES ONCE A MONTH
The Office of Public Works (OPW) has launched an initiative to encourage more people to visit the historic sites that it manages. Most sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will now be free every first Wednesday from now until the end of the year.
In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this will affect the following sites:
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ Kilmainham Gaol
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow
Great initiative! Expect a huge amount of people on 03 August at these sites, so be early. VODAFONE DATA ROAMING OFFER
Vodafone did charge just 99cent for PrePay Data Roaming for a long time, but then – without telling us properly – they sneakily increased the price for PrePay Data Roaming to EUR 3. For PostPay customers it was always outrageously expensive to use the Internet from their phone abroad. Now, for July and August, Vodafone had a re-think and is even offering a better deal than before. For all data roaming the charges in the Vodafone countries will be the same as in Ireland, that means that roaming is free in July and August. If you have a PrePay phone you pay the same as at home (99 cent per day) but for PostPay users with a data plan it is even better: If you have a data plan, you just continue using this data plan and there are NO additional charges for using the phone outside of Ireland. Please note that this does not apply to all European countries, but only to countries where Vodafone has a presence. The details can be found her www.vodafone.ie/offers/free-data-roaming A great deal and when I was in the UK last week, I saved at least 15 Euro that way. It would be great if it stayed like that!! (Make sure you read the terms and conditions and check with Vodafone if you don’t understand them fully, because if you make a wrong assumption or misunderstand the deal, the cost could be horrendously high.)

CRACK BIRD FLIES AGAIN
The Pop-Up Restaurant “Crack Bird” that found a home in 19 Crane Lane in Temple Bar is not a Pop-Up anymore. Instead it found a long term home and will now be on 34 South William St, Dublin 2 just a short distance from Powerscourt Townhouse Centre in a building in which Maloti Indian Cuisine had their restaurant before they closed. Crack Bird doesn’t have a website, but you can follow them on Twitter: twitter.com/crackbirddublin I have been there a few times during their 2 months stint in Temple Bar and I definitely liked the food. It is an upmarket version of Southern Fried Chicken. Very tasty and a good price for the main (assuming the prices stay the same as before), the side dishes and sauces are a bit expensive in my opinion, but the Soy Chicken is just delicious.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FOCUS IRELAND TRIATHLON
The Focus Ireland Triathlon will take place in Dun Laoghaire on Sun 31 July and Focus Ireland, who are a charity working to help homeless people, is urgently looking for 120 volunteers. You don’t need to have any triathlon/sports experience but will play a key role in helping out with registration, directions and event safety by warning general passers by that there is a race in progress and by issuing directions to event participants. 10 people are needed on 14 July, 20 on 30 July and 120 on 31 July (form 05:30 in the morning until 13:00). All volunteers will be provided with a Triathlon t-shirt and goodie bag, and will be invited to the awards ceremony which will take place on the East Pier at 12:30. Full training will be provided before race day and you are invited to a volunteer briefing session on Thurs 28 July in the Royal Marine Hotel Dún Laoghaire at from 19:00-20:30 (Your attendance at this session will be welcomed but is not essential). PERFORMANCE POETRY WORKSHOP FOR TEENAGERS
The Coolock Library is running an interesting programme for teenagers and has still some places on it available. Spread the word! The workshop is called ” Got Something to Say?”. It is called “A Performance Poetry Workshop for Teenagers”, but as you can imagine that is not the most target group compatible label for the event, therefore forget the name and read this…it sounds cool!
“We’re looking for teenagers who can show the world they have something to say…in their own way. Join us in July (18-22) to work with performance poet Dave Lordan for a week long project in the Coolock/Darndale area. We need people for loads of different roles, writing, rapping, dancing, skating, filming and more. MUMM TWISTS CONVENTION – PHOTO EXHIBITION
13-19 July: 28 South William Street, Dublin 2
G.H.Mumm Champagne has commissioned leading Irish stylist Aisling Farinella and photographer Rich Gilligan to create a stunning fashion photographic exhibition that twists convention and links fashion and architecture. The special one week pop-up exhibition, takes place in 28 South William Street, Dublin 2 from 13-19 July.
Entitled ‘Common Ground: A G.H. Mumm Exhibition, Twisting Conventions in Fashion & Architecture’, Aisling took the work of six prominent Irish fashion designers, Una Burke, Simone Rocha, Eilis Boyle, Eme Vandal, Joanne Hynes and Tim Ryan, and found a range of buildings and inspiring architectural spaces that relate to their work visually and conceptually. The result is a beautifully crafted exhibition which brings to light the parallels between the two art forms.

DUBLIN FLAMENCO FESTIVAL – PHOTO EXHIBITION
The Dublin Flamenco Festival will take place from 23-31 July with lots of performances in the Helix, DCU, Dublin 9. In addition there will be workshops, conferences and talks taking place in various venues around Dublin and on top of all that there will be a photo exhibition curated by Olivier Cornet (olliart).
Nathalie Moyano and Damian Power, the two directors of Peña Flamenca El Indalo (the Dublin-based non-profit organisation behind the festival) are exhibiting 20 of their flamenco-themed photographs. The exhibition will be open 14-31 July at the festival headquarters in The Liffey Trust Centre, Upper Sheriff Street (Entrance through The Green Room Bar). INTERCULTURAL COUCH – EXCHANGE DUBLIN
Fri 08 July: 13:00-17:00 – Exchange Dublin, Exchange Street Upper, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. “Intercultural Dublin is a movement that seeks to promote various intercultural campaigns, events, projects, and communities throughout Dublin City. We hope that by encouraging these intercultural events we can promote inclusion, integration and combat racism and discrimination within the greater Dublin community.” The Intercultural Couch is a social project designed to gain insight on how the people of Dublin view their city. BRAY SUMMER FEST 2011
08 July – 07 August: Bray Sea Front
In the middle of “summer”, the Bray Summer Fest is a reliable festival for many year. I don’t know how good it was in the first 25 of its 30 years, but in the last 5 years, I regularly went to Bray for the Summer Fest and was always impressed. Bray is not the biggest place, but they always put a good lineup together and with highlights like the Fireworks, the Airshow and – new this year – an Africa Day and a Charity Day, there is something for nearly everybody. This year the festival runs for a whole month. Starting on 08 July, it will continue until 07 August. This weekend the following bands will be on stage:

The website provides a lot of information, especially the page www.braysummerfest.com/events/ but oddly the website and the Festival brochure www.braysummerfest.com/Bray-Summerfest-2011.pdf are not very similar and it seems you can’t use one without the other if you want comprehensive information.
I plan to go to Bray for some of the gigs and – if I manage – for at least one of the Fireworks. ;-)

YOGA IN THE PARK – PHOENIX PARK
Throughout the summer last year Fiona Moloney was running weekly Yoga classes to raise money for The Dublin Simon Community. It was a successful effort with EUR 1,600 being raised for homeless people in Dublin. Yoga in the Park is now back and will be run by Fiona and Tine Schnell.
Each Saturday at 11:00-12:00 until September, Fiona and Tine will be taking turns to lead the classes. Meeting point is the Bandstand near the Zoo and near the Tea Rooms. Classes will be suitable for all levels and are donation based. That means you can give what you can afford, but please be fair. Fiona and Tine are doing a great job for the Simon Community and they need your support.

ARCHIVE AT LUNCHTIME – FILM SCREENING – IFI

Over the last two months the IFI ran free screenings of films from the IFI Irish Film Archive on Mondays and Wednesdays. The films are really interesting and became so popular that in July the Archive films will be screened every day, but – to make my life interesting when I try to describe that to you :-) – the two films are shown on alternating days. Simply collect your free tickets at the IFI Box Office when you get there. (You might have to pay a 1 Euro membership for the day.)
The first film is “Shamrocks Sky High”, sponsored by Aer Lingus and produced by Vincent Corcoran. This film from 1968 shows the company’s operations in Ireland and overseas. The film looks behind the scenes at Dublin Airport and at the expertise involved in developing and maintaining Ireland’s national airline. MADE IN TEMPLE BAR
From 15-24 July, Temple Bar Cultural Trust is teaming up with more than 20 of their cultural neighbours, over 100 artists and performers and a number of creative companies in Ireland to celebrate 20 years of unique culture and regeneration in Dublin’s Cultural Quarter. Over 70 events taking place in Temple Bar will include premieres of site specific theatre, outdoor movies, specially commissioned art installations, Grammy award winning artists and even a world famous high wire walker. It promises to be a great festival and I am looking forward to it. Most events are free, but some are ticketed and usually tickets for Temple Bar events go quite fast. AN AFTERNOON WITH RADIOACTIVITY – TCD
Fri 15 July: 14:00-17:00 – MacNeill Lecture Theatre, Hamilton Building, Trinity College Dublin. To celebrate the Tercentenary of the School of Chemistry and the 100th anniversary of the award of the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Marie Curie, the School of Chemistry is hosting an open symposium “An Afternoon with Radioactivity”, which will include an address by Professor Hélène Langevin-Joliot, the grand-daughter of Marie Curie. Other speakers include Dr Clint Sharrad, The University of Manchester, Dr Jim Ballinger, Chief Radiopharmaceutical Scientist, Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital, London and Dr Ciara McMahon, Director of Environmental Surveillance and Assessment, Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland. MADE IN TEMPLE BAR EVENTS
On Fri 15 July, the following events take place as part of the Temple Bar Summer Festival “Made in Temple Bar”:
+ 15:00-16:00 Mime & Puppetry Theatre Show ‘Buckets’ in the Culture Box, 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. Cata Isle Mime Theatre’s first solo show combines mime with elements of puppeteering. Poured into sound, light and make believe, it shows you that everything is possible on stage. + 18:15-19:00: High Wire Solo performed by Didier Pasquette on Temple Bar Square. French high-wire walker Didier Pasquette will perform his awesome high wire show ‘Solo’ 12 metres above the ground. This will be followed by performances from the Dublin Gospel Choir and the Masamba Samba School, a street drumming group. + 19:30-22:00: RTÉ Radio 1 Presents Nighthawks @ Made in Temple Bar in the Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. Nighthawks, a Dublin based arts collective which meets in the Cobalt Cafe once a month, features music, comedy, theatre, poetry and dance. Project Arts Centre will host a special Nighthawks event which will be broadcast live on the night on RTE Radio 1. Acts on the night include Fred the band, Maeve Higgins and Colm Keegan. Admission is free, but tickets are required. IFI FAMILY FESTIVAL – TEMPLE BAR
The Irish Film Institute (IFI) in Temle Bar is running a Family Festival in July. The IFI will bring the best films from around the world to young film fans and as it is normal such film screenings are not free. However, there are two events that are free and worth listing here (The only free film screening is unfortunately already booked up):
+ The IFI Family Festival Street Art Workshop for 10-14 year-olds will run from 13-17 July and is for graffiti artists and street artists. It might be too late already, but if you know someone who might be interested, check out the details here: www.irishfilm.ie/index_334.asp

WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPHY – IRISH MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
Thur 23 Jul: 12:00-13:00 – Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8. In the rejuvenated “What is …? Talk Series”, the IMMA invites to a talk entitled “What is Photography?” on 23 July.
What is Photography? is the first in a series of talks and booklets which aim to provide a general introduction to the materials and methodologies of contemporary art. What is Photography? provides an overview of photography and its role as medium and mode of documentation in contemporary arts practice. TEMPLE BAR CRITICISM
Last week a very critical article was in the Irish Times about Temple Bar and the people that “run” Temple Bar today and in the past. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/magazine/2011/0702/1224299715351.html
The author of the article complained about the drinking culture and the noise and the atmosphere and everything else in Temple Bar. I wasn’t clearly able to identify who wrote the article because is not fully clarified (two names appear at the top), but it seems that the author lives in Temple Bar and has a personal issue with some things that are going on there (particularly noise). Well, someone personally affected is possibly not the best judge of a situation that needs a more objective analysis, so the article is probably not a good representation of the issues. But at its 20th anniversary it is only fair to look at the plus and minus of Temple Bar and the people running it. Initially the whole Temple Bar area was planned to be turned into a bus depot and THANK GOD this didn’t happen. In the past 20 years, the area was developed and is now the one and only focal point for tourists and if we think that the only rescue for Ireland is in tourism, then we absolutely need such a focal point. However, it has been reported and researched time and time again that the Irish society in general has a somewhat challenged relationship with alcohol and consequently the international reputation of Ireland is that it is the country for drinking lots. No surprise that this means that alcohol is an important factor in Temple Bar and blaming the Temple bAr Cultural Trust or any other organisation is rather ridiculous.
Yes, not everything is perfect in Temple Bar and an open discussion would be a good idea, but my opinion is that that Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) and – to a lesser degree – the Temple Bar Traders Association have done a lot of good for the area. Without the cultural use of Temple Bar would be a lot less developed. The Meeting House Square – which is currently (annoyingly) unavailable because of the archaeological discoveries there – is one of the few spaces that Dublin has for cultural outdoor events. Yes, the rental charges for it are MUCH too high and maybe the rents in other areas (the financially troubled Button Factory, who is rented to the people running the venue by the TBCT comes to mind) are not reasonable either, but that doesn’t justify dissolving the TBCT.
I am only skimming the surface here and could say a lot more about Temple Bar and the TBCT, but the bottom line is that I find the approach odd that was taken in the Irish Times article. Let’s identify the problems and let’s solve them instead of calling for a dissolution of an organisation that has done a lot of good for Dublin.
