Hi all!

A new Dail (Irish Parliament) has come together this week, a new Taoiseach has been elected and a whole new cabinet has been appointed. Some busy week! After the previous government manoeuvred itself into trouble, many hope that the new government will sort out everything and will get Ireland back on track as soon as possible. I, too, hope that the new government will do a good job. The old government had accumulated too many bad stories to continue, but you might be surprised when I say that they did the best they could! It just wasn’t good enough in the end. And Enda Kenny with his cabinet will do the best they can as well. Let’s hope the end result will help improving the economic and social issues.
To take it one step further into our life: Each and everyone of us is doing the same thing…even if we mess up somewhere. We are doing the best we can. It is a basic behavioural principle that everyone is doing the best he/she can do with the resources available. If someone doesn’t achieve what he/she should/want/need to achieve, see if the resources that are available are sufficient and where additional resources can be found.

On Tuesday I had the pleasure of hearing a talk of Dr. Tony Humphreys, a clinical psychologist. The talk was organised by the RDS and I had mentioned it here in the Dublin Event Guide. When I found out about it, something pushed me to go to it despite the fact that I had never seen or heard Tony Humphreys before and it was worth every second. He was talking about sooo many things, but the title was “Authentic Leadership”. If you ever get a chance to listen to him anywhere, make sure that you go! (www.tonyhumphreys.ie) I would love to tell you LOTS about the talk, but I want to share just one thing that I had heard before and he reminded me of: When you were born, you didn’t have any insecurities. You were born with a natural fear of falling and a fear of loud noises. All other fears, phobias and insecurities that you might have now, you had to learn throughout your life! Some insecurities you might have adopted because they brought some secondary benefits. Others are the result of negative experiences.

So if we do the best we can and if the insecurities that we have are learned, then can we not unlearn the insecurities and add resources to do better? YOU know that the answer is a resounding YES! This week is focused around St. Patrick’s Day despite the fact that we will have to wait until Thursday. But many will spend most of the week looking forward to that day off. :-)
This weekend I might go to the brand new Science Gallery exhibition. It is not too urgent, though, because it will run for a whole month.
On Sunday I plan to go to the Ferocious Mingle Market and in the evening to the Gardiner Gospel Choir. Last week I did some tourist activities and went to the Chester Beatty Library. This week the Natural History Museum could get a visit from me. We’ll see. ;-)
On Monday, the Instituto Cervantes event with Carlos Nunez sounds interesting. On Tuesday the Refresh Dublin talk about Social Design and the talk about the historic background behind St. Patrick are tempting. On Wednesday is an interesting Science Gallery talk about the Brain.
And then on Thursday I might go to the parade if the weather is good and try to find the street performances and bands afterwards.

GINGERFEST DUBLIN – DAX BAR
Mike McGuire, a proud ginger (meaning red-head, if you have never heard that term) had a brilliant idea for an event in Dublin. On Sat 12 March Dublin’s first ever Gingerfest is being held in Dax Bar on Pembroke Street Upper in Dublin 2. What started as a facebook campaign called “Ireland should have a day to celebrate ginger people” quickly grew into an actual event which Mike is now running for UNICEF Ireland.
The night is exclusively for red heads, either natural or fake! Wigs will be available for purchase on the night if you were so unlucky to have a different hair colour and there will be great prizes for the person best dressed, the person with most freckles per square inch etc. Knights of the Green and Hermans Salon in Dundrum Town Centre have given two EUR 100 vouchers as prizes on the night. Dax and the Viking Splash Tours have given a prize for four (a voucher for four and a Viking Splash Tour for four). The Dublin Barber Shop will be giving 100% of their profits from Saturday 12 March to UNICEF in our honour. So, you see, lots will happen on that day. Mike’s aim is to turn it into a National Red Head Day with events all over the country. This year to kick it off the event will be somewhat smaller, but a good bit of money will be raised for UNICEF and people will find out about it. The venue will open at 16:30 in case you want to watch the Rugby game, but the Gingerfest properly kicks off at 20:00 with live music from The Snails. Sounds like a great idea!! :-) But be warned, if you are not a read-head, you will have to buy a wiga the door (or bring your own) to get in. And a message for Fiona: I would expect that “auburn” qualifies as red in this case, so you are all fine! :-)

WAITING FOR THE BUS – NEW TECHNOLOGY
The first set of bus stops have been upgraded by installing signs that tell you when the next bus will arrive. 250 bus stops will be equipped by the end of the summer and 450 by the end of the year. It will only be for the busier bus stops and it won’t reduce the waiting time, but knowing when the next bus will arrive should make the process fo waiting for the bus a little less frustrating.

CENSUS 2011
A census is taking place in Ireland on 10 April and the 5000 census enumerators will start today distributing the forms. A census is an event when every person living in a country will be counted so that statistics about population etc can be worked out. The Irish census uses an approach that doesn’t make sense to me, but I am not an expert in statistics or in the best way of doing a census. But think about this: The census in Ireland counts everyone who is in the country on the evening of 10 April. So if you are visiting Ireland on that day you will be counted, but if you are on holidays abroad you will NOT be counted. To me, it would make more sense to count the people that are NORMALLY living at a place no matter if they are there on 10 April or not. Because if I don’t count the people that are on holidays but that the rest of the year live in the country I get my figures wrong! TEMPLE BAR DESIGNER MART BACK AFTER BREAK
After a winter break since Christmas the outdoor Designer Market in the Old Town area of Temple Bar (Cow’s Lane) is back again from this weekend. FARMLEIGH HOUSE RE-OPENS
Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park is Ireland’s most exclusive Bed&Breakfast, because you have to be the head of a state or of similar importance to be allowed to stay there. In addition the Dublin home of the new Taoiseach Enda Kenny will be there. Farmleigh House is the state’s accommodation for international guests of the government. But in addition to that it is a wonderful estate that hosts many events during the year. Farmer’s Markets, Easter Events for children, Christmas Events for Children, Movie Nights, Car Races in Phoenix Park and many other events all take place or at least involve Farmleigh House. FINNISH CHAMBER CHOIR – UNITARIAN CHURCH + ST. PATRICK’S
The Vir gin Mary Project is a cross-cultural project, in which the Finnish chamber choir Novena and mosaic artist Minna Floman combine music and mosaic art in a unique way. The project culminates in spring 2011 in the publishing of a CD of A

MEMORY LAB – SCIENCE GALLERY

The Memory Lab, a month-long “Lab in the Gallery” experience at the Science Gallery invites you to take part in a range of real, scientific experiments into how we remember or why we forget.
Eight separate experiments will investigate a range of aspects of functional memory from how good your short-term memory is to how and why we evolved memory in the first place. Be prepared for a barrage of information you will have to recall including numbers, letters, faces and even smells. The curators also invite people to come and record their earliest ever memory as MEMORY LAB seeks to amass the largest database of earliest memories in the world.
The experimentation begins on 11 March and continues until 08 April. MEMORY LAB will also contain a rich events programme to allow you explore memory deeper – including a talk by former US Memory Champion and author of “Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything” Joshua Foer. Events also include special recruitment event on how to make yourself memorable and Science Gallery’s first ever table quiz where you can put your ability to recall to the test. One of Dublin Community Growers first garden events of the season takes place at the Seven Oaks Apartment Complex, just off the Sarsfield Road, in Dublin 10. The
community garden at Seven Oaks has been just an idea for the past year or so. It’s been the wish of the residents of this predominantly affordable housing development to build themselves a garden – a shared area for people to grow vegetables, attract some wildlife and use as a space to retreat and relax in.
The project will begin on Sat 12 March. On this date the residents will hold a site preparation day, when it is planned to terrace a patch of land to enable planting on the sloped space. The public are invited, and local children will be called to pot seeds. Later, after some work, a barbeque will be provided for the hard-working volunteers.

CATALAN CULTURAL FESTIVAL
On Saturday 12 Mar and Sunday 13 Mar a group of Catalan people living in Dublin (www.catalansadublin.com) will celebrate a Catalan Festival to give people in Ireland a chance to find out more about Catalan culture. The group is a community and not a formal organisation, so the festival won’t be very formal or official, but nevertheless you are invited to join them.
The point of the festival is to have some fun together and share music, food and discussions with as many people as possible. All of the events are free (donations will be welcome to cover expenses) and the organisers have (happily) put their own money in to get this festival off the ground. The group sees this year’s festival as a start and plans bring a bigger event next year.

As part of the 2011 Grattan Lecture Series, Mr Andrés Velasco, former Finance Minister of Chile, will deliver a public lecture entitled “The Fiscal Framework: Lessons from Chile” on Monday morning. The St. Patrick’s Day Festival starts already on Wednesday with the Céilí at St. Stephen’s Green. The Ceili is great fun even if you don’t know much about Irish Dancing. Some dances are explained or at least introduced, so that you can take part. And the traditional Irish music is good. You will learn dances like the “Siege of Ennis” or the “Walls of Limerick” and lots more. It takes place on the street in front of a stage, so look out for the stage on Wednesday. ST. PATRICK’S DAY
On 17 March is St. Patrick’s Day the National Holiday in Ireland. The main event on the day is the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Apart from that there is unfortunately not toooo much happening once the parade is over. Well, this is not strictly true, because there are many other events, but the majority of people will not be keen to take part so it is off to the pub. Traditionally it has been a day when alcohol was consumed from early on in large amount and for that reason and for that day only the off-licence laws had to be changed a few years ago. Mad!
The parade is good fun and is getting better every year. If you want to be able to see something, you have to be VERY early in town, though. Approx. 500,000 people will try to see the parade and once you are in the 3rd, 4th or 5th row, you can just see the “taller” parade wagons (they are called “floats”).
St. Stephen’s Green will be closed for a large part of the day and you will see lots of Gardai all over the city. My experience is that already early in the evening some areas of the city centre become very messy with drunken people on the streets. Let’s hope that things are better this year and if you can help, please do so!
Pay and Display parking will not be enforced on this holiday, but make sure that you don’t park your car in bus lanes or on wheel-chair car park spaces.

For the last 60 years University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin have been competing in the Gannon Cup University Boat Race. This exciting and historic race starts at O’Connell Bridge and rows up stream, finishing at St James Gate, the site of the Guinness Brewery. Due to favourable tides, this year the race can take place on St Patrick’s Day. Come along and cheer as the rowers make their way up the river!

ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE
The St. Patrick’s Festival Parade will take place on Wed 17 March. It will leave at 12:00 at Parnell Square and will then follow O’Connell Street, College Green, Dame Street to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The route is relatively short and the amount of people will be HUGE. So if you want to be able to see something come really early. There is no perfect spot to see the parade and if you are in the 4th row in the crowd, you won’t see much that is happening on street level. Some people bring ladders and it is not a bad idea. If you are small, I have some good advise for you: Come EVEN earlier!! You will regret it otherwise! The parade has and still is improving year on year and if you have never seen it before, go for it! The Parade theme in 2011 is “Brilliant” based on a short story by Roddy Doyle. Lots of marching bands and dancers will take part if the weather is not so good OR if you didn’t make it early enough and would end up behind a wall of people, you can watch the parade at home on TV or via live-stream on the RTE website.

CHRISTCHURCH EARTH QUAKE APPEAL + MASS
The earthquake that hit Christchurch in New Zealand on 22 Feb killed over 166 people and hundreds more were injured, many are still missing and many homes were destroyed. The New Zealand Ireland Association is now working with the Red Cross in Ireland to raise money for those affected, and the association are trying to organise Friday 18 March as ‘Rugby Jersey Day’. The idea is that people wear a rugby jersey to work and collect/ donate money to the Irish Red Cross. AL-MUTANABBI STREET – EXHIBITION + DISCUSSION
In 2007 a car bomb destroyed Al-Mutanabbi Street, Baghdad, the street of printers, bookshops and coffee shops, a place of ‘luminous distinction’ for all who visited. It had been the street of intellectual confab for hundreds of years. A group of American and European artists responded to this by producing a number of posters. These posters will be exhibited in the Central Library, ILAC Centre, Dublin from 14-28 March.
As part of the exhibition a panel discussion will take place in the Central Library, ILAC Centre, on Sat 19 March at 15:00, titled “Art as Reply”. It will be chaired by Professor Michael Cronin, DCU, and will include Helen Carey, curator of 1913 Forum on public art and Sean O’Reilly, novelist, reading work from Iraq. Other speakers are to be confirmed.

ST PATRICK’S DAY FESTIVAL – BIG DAY OUT
The Big Day Out will take place in the streets AROUND Merrion Square on Sunday 20 March from 12:00-18:00. It is a festival within a festival, featuring street theatre, performance and music in the heart of Georgian Dublin. Merrion Square will become an oversized playground for both children and adults. Approx 50,000 people are expected to attend the event throughout the day and I definitely recommend you to come to the Big Day Out. Lots of entertainment is provided and there is something for everybody. A number of streets around Merrion Square will be closed, so if you come by car, park a little further away. I will have more details in next week’s Event Guide.

ST. PATRICK DIDN’T DO IT!
You were told that St. Patrick brought Catholicism to Ireland and that he banned the snakes from Ireland and that is why he is the National Saint of Ireland? Interestingly historians now think that it wasn’t St. Patrick at all, but instead a monk called Palladius was the first that brought the catholic religion to this island. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palladius and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Patrick). But it seems that St. Patrick’s Public Relations and self promotion was better than Palladius’ and St. Patrick was therefore credited with bringing Catholicism to the country. By the way, the snakes were already gone in the ice age, so neither of the two had anything to do with them.
Changing the National Saint to Palladius would have a big advantage because the Feast Day of St. Palladius is on 06 July, so we would have a better chance of warm weather for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. ;-)
