Hi all!

Did you have a wonderful day off yesterday? The weather was great and the St. Patrick’s Day parade has improved again. However, I think it should go along a much longer route because most people can’t see anything at all. Check my comments in the “This is Odd!!” section at the bottom of this newsletter!

[ad]

We are rapidly approaching issue 200 of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” and as I had promised before, a good few things will change and will get improved during this year. To do that, I can either do whatever I want and hope that you like it OR I can ask you, but asking more than 8000 people is a little complicated. Instead I am looking for a small group of passionate Event Guide readers and supporters, who I can ask for their opinion and who will act as advisors. The group has to be small and to be part of it, you have to be very interested and passionate about the Event Guide. I haven’t decided if it will be 3 or 5 or 10 people, but I don’t expect a bigger panel than 10. If you want to be on that panel, please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject ADVISOR. I would appreciate if you could give me an idea why you are the one I should select as an advisor. Maybe you just LOVE the Event Guide, or it is your background that makes you suitable or maybe you always wanted to help. Just tell me what drives you. BTW: You won’t have to do any work yourself (unless you want to), but you have to share your opinion with me regarding the further development of the Event Guide.

I have to admit that I love Flash Mobs. They make me smile and create a warm feeling. Seeing so many people working together to surprise a few random people. Lately more and more Flash Mobs are co-ordinated as advertisement, but it doesn’t take away from the magic, so today I have two VERY diverse Flash Mobs. The first one is an Irish one in Sydney and the second one is an Arabic flash mob in Beirut. Great stuff!

This week Donna M donated money to the Event Guide so that you will continue to get it every week. Thanks! I need YOUR help as well! If you have never donated PLEASE consider it. If you have donated a few years back, see if you can help again. Without your help, the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” will not be there forever.

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my bank, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Three more days of this year’s St. Patrick’s Festival. Today is unfortunately a normal working day for most, but tomorrow the Literary Treasure Hunt will take place and on Sunday the first proper outdoor festival of the year will take place when the “Big Day Out” will hit Merrion Square.
I will definitely be at the Big Day Out on Sunday, but before that, on Saturday, I will go to the Open Night of the nice Flamenco enthusiasts at Pena Flamenco el Indalo and will later go to the brilliant Ratzinger’s gig in the Mint Bar in Westin Hotel. I never get tired of this band! ;-)

After the Big Day Out on Sunday, another BIG gig is on my schedule:
I sing in an Elvis Tribute Band (in the backing choir) and on Sunday we are part of the “Tribute for the Coombe” gig in the Olympia Theatre. Three tribute bands are coming together in this unique and once-off event to raise money for the Neo-Natal unit of the Coombe Hospital. Abbaesque, the Classic Beatles and Elvis The Way It Was with Kevin Doyle as Elvis will be together on one stage. It will be a great concert and there are still a few tickets (EUR 25) available: www.ticketmaster.ie/A-Tribute-To-The-Coombe-tickets/artist/1090985 Make sure that you finish the St. Patrick’s weekend on a high and come to the gig! :-)

For the rest of the week a number of lectures and talks sound really interesting. I know this is not everybody’s thing, but it is amazing how interesting many of the talks are! Try them out, they don’t cost you anything!
On Tuesday the World Water Day event in the Science Gallery and the “Vanishing of the Bees” film screening sound interesting, on Wednesday the National Library lecture about the Guillotine and the UCD lecture about our Memories tempt me and on Thursday it is the Light Pollution lecture of the Astronomical Society. Yes, I know, I have a very wide range of interests. ;-)

RISING STARS – BAND COMPETITION
The Dublin City Soul Festival is on a mission to promote the very best emerging artists from Ireland and around the world and to do this Chris Maher and his team want to build you a stage, put you in the spotlight and let the world hear your music. Since they launched Rising Stars in 2009 they have done exactly that. I have found out about brilliant bands and performers just because of Rising Stars and if you or someone you know is an emerging artist, creating great original music then make sure to check out www.risingstars.ie and submit a song for your chance to play at one of the main stage events at the 5th Dublin City Soul Festival from 26-29 May.

FARMLEIGH HOUSE RE-OPENS
I wrote about Farmleigh House last week, because it was re-opening after having been closed over winter, but the Link I had included had a typo. You probably guessed it, but here is the correct link: www.farmleigh.ie

TOTAL FITNESS GYMS CLOSE
At midnight on 16 Mar suddenly and without warning all three Total Fitness gyms (in Castleknock, Malahide and Sandyford) closed. The company behind the chain, Centre Operators Limited, blamed the high level of rent on the properties for the closure and declared that a liquidator would be appointed. www.rte.ie/news/2011/0317/totalfitness-business.html

TSUNAMI IMPACT ON THE WORLD
Not at all “Dublin News”, but the picture impressed me so much, that I had to share it with you. You see the part of the world that was affected by Tsunami waves. You can clearly see how they spread from the Epicentre in Japan thousands of kilometres to New Zealand. An impressive picture that shows the power nature has

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 8000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

AL-MUTANABBI STREET – EXHIBITION + DISCUSSION
In 2007 a car bomb destroyed Al-Mutanabbi Street, Baghdad, the street of printers, bookshops and coffee shops, a place of ‘luminous distinction’ for all who visited. It had been the street of intellectual confab for hundreds of years. A group of American and European artists responded to this by producing a number of posters. These posters will be exhibited in the Central Library, ILAC Centre, Dublin from 14-28 March.
As part of the exhibition a panel discussion will take place in the Central Library, ILAC Centre, on Sat 19 March at 15:00, titled “Art as Reply”. It will be chaired by Professor Michael Cronin, DCU, and will include Helen Carey, curator of 1913 Forum on public art and Sean O’Reilly, novelist, reading work from Iraq. Other speakers are to be confirmed.
To book a place at the panel discussion, contact: The Open Learning Centre, Central Library, ILAC Centre, Henry St., Dublin 1. Admission is free, but booking is essential. Further information on the exhibition contact: Evelyn Conlon evelynconlon@eircom.net www.dublincitypubliclibraries.ie

SEAL RELEASE – SKERRIES
Sun 20 Mar: 14:00 – Skerries Harbour next to RNLI), Co.Dublin
Selkies or grey seals hold special reverence in Irish folklore. Believed to carry the souls of drowned fishermen to the other side, they were revered and it was considered very bad luck to harm them in any way. Now considering they are probably the no 1 indicator species in regards to climate change, this protection is still an important part of our conservation plans in Ireland. – When Frank O’Brien took a wander around Red Island in Skerries early last December he found ‘Finn’, a bedraggled, starving and wounded grey seal pup aged about 10 weeks, which was on the beach, cold and starving, her wounds infected and she could no longer forage for food. The Irish Seal Sanctuary’s cared for her at the Irish Seal Sanctuary (ISS) and after months of loving care and attention at the ISS by the volunteers and staff she is ready to head north from Courtown and back to her family home around St Patricks island in Skerries.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY FESTIVAL MUST BE IMPROVED
+ Yesterdays St. Patrick’s Day was great, the parade was this year based on a short story by Roddy Doyle called “Brilliant” and while I felt there were significantly less marching bands than in previous years, the other contributors nicely told the stories of the different chapters in the short story. But, be honest, did you get the story? If you had read it before, you probably did, but if you only heard about it, a lot of the meaning would have gone over your head, so for next year, it would be great to share it in all medias. If you would like to read the short story even after the event, check it out here: www.roddydoyle.ie/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/BrilliantbyRoddyDoyle.pdf
+ The usual estimates for the parade attendance is in the region of 500,000 people and the festival route is about 2.5km long (www.dublin.info/st-patricks-day/). That means that on both sides approx 5km are available for people. 5000m means that there must have been 100 people per metre!!!! If you squeeze them a bit, up to 3 people can watch the parade in the first row and another three in the second row per metre. More than 3 rows can’t SEE the parade. And the remaining 91 people? They saw NOTHING or not much! SO would it not make sense to increase the parade route so that people can actually see the parade? I saw some bits, but not too much and I would have loved to see more! How was it for you? Were you among the 9 or among the 91?
+ Every year there is the same problem after the parade: Tens of Thousands of people roam the city and don’t know what to do and where to go, so they go drinking in pubs or empty the off-licence shops. It would be great if some other event was provided AFTER the parade that would run from 15:00-17:00 to give people a place to go to!
+ It is amazing that the National Lottery, who sponsor the St. Patrick’s Day Fireworks, called “Skyfest” keep ignoring Dublin. The last time the Skyfest took place in Dublin was 2006, so despite the fact that a third of the population livers in Dublin, we haven’t seen the Skyfest in the capital for 5 years. Visiting the country is ok, but every two or three years it should be back in Dublin! (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyfest)
