| 11 Feb 2011 Subscribers: 8012
———————————————————————

Hi all!

Have a look at the subscriber number in the header above! Wohoooo! We made it to more than 8000 and are on track to reach 10,000 by the end of this year. Keep spreading the word and help growing the Event Guide Community further. All of us together are a strong lobby for free events and don’t we all appreciate free events in the current economic climate!?

[ad]

Yes, 8000 people has to be celebrated and I though we could do that at the Alternative Valentine’s Day Party, but it seems that you are all keen on spending Valentine’s Day at home or maybe in a restaurant that offers a reduced menu and crammed table arrangements on Valentine’s Day. ;-) Only a few people got back to me expressing their interest to come to an Event Guide Party on Monday. To be honest, I can’t blame you! Monday is not the bestest day to have a party, so instead we will do our “8000 Reader Party” on a Saturday in the coming weeks and hopefully it will suit you better. Before Christmas we were about 100 people at the Event Guide Christmas Party, so somewhere between 20 and 200 is the target for the next party. ;-)

If you were hoping for an “Alternative Valentine’s Day Event”, I hope you won’t be too disappointed. Send me a mail if you are and I will send some sympathy and empathy back to you! ;-)

Quite a number of things happening this coming week! The event list is filling again and while there is no BIG headline event yet, there are many many little events that add to the variety of the cultural life in Dublin. If you hear about any events, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com. You can use that e-mail address for any contact with me.

And keep telling your friends about the Dublin Event Guide and all the cool events that are taking place in Dublin. Use this to spread the word: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

To subscribe they simply can send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject SUBSCRIBE DEG and they now can subscribe as well on the Facebook Page www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (go to the “Join Email List” Tab).

For today’s Feel Good Slot I had some help again. A good friend sent me a suggestion and at first I hesitated. It is not the usual type of Feel Good Slot video, instead it is a Failte Ireland promo video, but give it a go and have a look at it. Yes, it IS a suitable video because it shows many many things that make Ireland interesting. Have a look: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5emdftOIoos

This week Rebecca T was the only shining example of support for the Event Guide. Thanks a lot! Can you help too? Your donation will help me to keep the Event Guide going week after week after week. The contributions are essential!! You can give as much as you can/want on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm and you can even set-up a yearly recurring donation of EUR 12 by following this link, similar to a magazine subscription.

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my bank, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

My Business + Marketing Seminar last week was brilliant. It went on for three days, and I learned a lot again. The whole week I was even busier than normal because I implemented some of the things already. I will tell you about it soon! :-) This week I have no seminar or other event. APART from a scenic helicopter flight over Dublin on Sunday, which will be soooo cool! :-) I will tell you more next week or during the week on the Event Guide Facebook Page. :-P www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide?

My plan for this week is to go to the Events on the corner Café Madrid on Saturday Morning and to the Flamenco El Indalo event in the Talbot Gallery afterwards. Then later I will try to go to Dun Laoghaire to Music-X and in the evening possibly to the Love Music Hate Racism gig OR to the Button Factory Adebisi Shank gig.
On Sunday I will go for my Helicopter flight at around lunchtime and then later I will try to go to the Ferocious Mingle Market. In the evening I will be in Gardiner Street Church for the Gospel Mass and you should try that out once. No matter if you are normally a church goer or not, try it and enjoy the music and the singing…and use the time to think about your pans and goals. You don’t have to be religious and you don’t even have to be catholic to come to the mass (When you are there, come to me at the front of the church afterwards and say Hi!, I am next to the choir doing the sound engineering.)

On Monday not too many events take place because of Valentine’s Day, in a way that is a contradiction, but it seems event organisers are concerned that the people either only go for dinner and then home or don’t go out at all.
On Tuesday the Re:Public2011 looks very interesting and on Wednesday you should either go to the Inn Jokes event in Kilmainham or to “Where the Mugic Happens” in the Button Factory. Riptide Movement will perform there and they are really good.
Thursday for me is a busy Event Guide day again, but you should go to Battle of the Bands in Hard Rock Café or to Café en Seine, where Santoria will be.

______Competition______________

I am working on getting more competitions for the new year, I know how much you like them. :-) If you work in a company that would like to let the readers know about your products or events through this competition section, just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com

REV. JESSE JACKSON – LIBERTY HALL
Rev. Jesse Jackson, the American civil rights activist and Baptist minister, will be in Dublin at an event in Liberty Hall. On Monday 14 Feb from 19:00 he will be in conversation with Miles Dungan. TASC, the think tank for action on social change, brought Jesse Jackson to Dublin and I expect that it will be a hugely interesting event. Tickets (EUR 22) are available from the Central Ticket Bureau at www.centralticketbureau.com or by telephone 0818 205205. The admission fee is purely to cover the cost of the event and of the visit, so there is no profit made. Nevertheless the nice people from TASC made a pair of tickets available for an Event Guide Reader to win. You have to hurry with your entry AND you have to be available on Monday (Valentine’s Day!) evening. If you want to enter the competition and have checked that you can make it if you win, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with JACKSON in the subject and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Sunday!! I will ring the winner before 19:00 on Sunday to let you know! www.activelink.ie/node/4665

A fun packed, educational trip back in time, Mid–Term ‘Mayhem’ keeps you and your little history hunters entertained this mid-term break. SIN E BAR – LAST WEEKEND
A last-night party on Sunday will be the final event in the Sin É Bar on Ormond Quay before the pub will close on that evening. The company behind the pub is unfortunately going into voluntary liquidation. Most troubles of pubs, restaurants and clubs in recent months were caused by crippling rents and unless our politicians do something about it, I fear the closures will continue. The problem is that all older lease contracts have NO option for a rent reduction, but only for a rent increase and the rents have gone so high that even well run companies in profitable areas struggle to keep up with the mad expectations from landlords. www.thejournal.ie/last-weekend-for-sin-e-bar-2011-02/

BUTTON FACTORY IN TROUBLE
Another prestigious and culturally important venue for live music did get into trouble when during the week the Button Factory in Temple Bar had to go into examinership. Examinership means that for 90 days the company is protected to sort out their financial issues. If no solution is found, then receivership could be the next step. However, until then all planned and scheduled gigs and events will go ahead. Let’s hope that the rent negotiation for the venue and other measures will be successful, because it would be a huge loss if the Button Factory was not around anymore.

All flights to the European Continent are now leaving from Terminal 2. www.aerlingus.com/travelinformation/movetoterminal2atdublin/

FIND UNSHAKABLE INNER PEACE – TALK
Wallace Huey, speaker, coach and author of “Unfold Your Wings and Watch Life Take Off” is inviting you to his inspiring and enlightening talks every Thursday until 21 April. His talks are supported by full screen digital projection with power point, audio, video and Internet. They take place in the Lantern Centre, 17 Synge Street, Dublin 8 and cost EUR 8 waged (and EUR 5 unwaged). Find more details on www.trans4mind.com/peace-talks/
————————————————————

EIRCOM PRICE INCREASES
Eircom has announced price increases that will see customers’ bills rising by an average of 3.1% from next month. The call set up fee will increase from 5.95 cent to 9.50 cent from 11 March and the rise will apply to all base rates, as well as some consumer and business. In addition to that the daytime hours will change as well, instead of charging day rates from 08:00-18:00, they will now charge day rates from 07:00-19:00 (except for existing customers who are already on an off-peak call plan). Allegedly broadband, line rental and bundle subscriptions are not affected by the price rises, but directory enquiries calls to 11811 will go up from EUR 1.68 to EUR 1.99 from 01 Apr. www.rte.ie/news/2011/0210/eircom.html All things considered, this seems to be a significant prize increase, but let’s face it, if you are still an Eircom customer, then you deserve it. They have never been competitive in comparison to other providers and I suggest you have a look at the Vodafone at Home offer. Click on:

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7500+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More to come! New companies that will be mentioned here soon are a Car Sharing Scheme. Watch this space.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. The exhibition was originally only intended for students learning German at secondary level. However, due to massive public interest, the organisers have decided to open County Hall for another Saturdays for the general public to experience and enjoy the exhibition. Admission free and no registration required on Saturday. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/dub/en7011059.htm

CAFÉ MADRID – GRAINGER’S PUB + FLAMENCO – TALBOT GALLERY Apologies, I made a mistake when including this event, it will not take place on 11 Feb, but instead, on 19 Feb!!
“Events… On The Corner” are running to Spanish flavoured events and I like the sound of it. :-) On Sat from 11:00, Grainger’s pub on 51 Talbot Street, Dublin 1 will be turned into a “Café Madrid”: ‘Churros con chocolate’ will be available and this is accompanied by the good sounds of Spanish singer & guitarist Myriam Leon Barrena and Irish singer & guitarist Stuart Doyle (They will be performing music and songs from their respective bands Annoying Cloud and Yukina.) Spanish newspapers and ‘real’ Spanish people will also be there if you feel like practising your Spanish.
And once you had your breakfast, you should be sufficiently nourished to continue from 13:00 in Talbot Gallery: Learn to dance Sevillanas with Peña Flamenca El Indalo. Sevillanas is a traditional Andalusian folk dance and is a good introduction to flamenco. From 13:00-14:00 learn how to clap along with the rhythm and try a few steps. You don’t need to be a dancer to join in.

IKEA – DUBLIN’S CHEAP EATS + TRAFFIC CHAOS
For more than two years IKEA in Ballymun is selling stylish-er furniture for cheaper prices than available before and all this time, Ikea is providing good food for very good prices in their big 550 seater restaurant. But it seems only now the media realises that. Or maybe only now the people of Dublin realise that you don’t need to buy flat-pack furniture to enjoy the food at Ikea?! Nearly every newspaper wrote about it just in recent weeks stating that older people are coming to Ikea on their free bus pass to have a low priced lunch or even breakfast and to meet for a chat. Every now and then a craving for 15 meatballs drags me to Ballymun, but I never saw tables full of pensioners. Maybe it is because I am not there at the time when they are there? Maybe it’s all a bit over exaggerated? www.independent.ie/national-news/big-plates-tempt-diners-to-ikea-2516806.html Talking about “over exaggerated” do you remember how Fingal County Council wanted to force us to pay parking charges at Ikea in the afternoon and evening to avoid the traffic chaos that they expected Ikea to create? Have you heard of any mad traffic jams around the shop? Not a single traffic jam in sight! Luckily the parking charges never came into effect! A big storm in a tea cup! In all fairness, it wasn’t the Fingal County Councillors who dreamt up this idea of the traffic chaos, instead it was the “Head of Programme Management” at the National Roads Authority who came up with that idea. www.independent.ie/national-news/ikea-spells-traffic-chaos-despite-1bn-road-boost-50626.html
