Hi all!

I have to apologise for the late arrival of the Event Guide last week. It was a combination of things that were the reason for the latest newsletter delivery since I started this newsletter. The two biggest problem were the fact that the company who I use to send the mail decided – in their wisdom – that the mail was spam and was only suitable for adults. :-O And when the spam rating is too high, then they decide to stop the sending of a mail to protect you. All good if it is REAL spam, but very annoying if it isn’t. Because the system doesn’t tell you WHAT is offensive. In the end I got the mail sent, but then I realised that some people only got it 2-3 hours after I sent it. Not good! I hope this week all will go well.

Yesterday I sent a separate mail to you, telling you about the free, donation-based full-day “Wealth Creation Mindset” Seminar I will be running on 16 Oct. Many of you replied and I already got more than 40 registrations, so the previously booked room would be FULL. But, there is good news: I managed to get a bigger room for the day! If you are interested as well, get back to me as soon as possible, even the bigger room can only take about 70 people and once it is full, it is full. If you didn’t get the mail or forgot to open it, check the information in the “Upcoming Events” Section towards the end of this mail. The seminar will be full of activities and I guarantee that it will not be boring and that you will definitely learn some new things.

By the way, if you have registered for the seminar already, you will get a reply from me, but it will probably Monday until I get a chance to do that!

This weekend I will go to some Open House events and will teach and train at another self-defence training course with www.kravmagaireland.com. On Tuesday the Alchemist Café sounds interesting and on Wednesday I will try to go to the Pitch Masterclass in the National College of Ireland. And on Thursday it is already time again to write the next Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Crazy how time is flying!

Compadrito Tango are running an “Argentine Tango workshop for Absolute Beginners”. The workshop is taking place on Sat 16 Oct from 13:00-17:00 and as the title says, you don’t need to have any Tango skills to take part in it. FLAMENCO SHOW – TICKET COMPETITION

Two dance workshops during the day and a Clapping & Rhythm & Singing workshop and then a Traditional Flamenco Show in the evening. That will be a great day for all Flamenco lovers! DUBLINIA – FAMILY TICKETS COMPETITION
This mid-term, Dublinia, near Christ Church, has planned a host of interactive entertainment to keep kids entertained. From a pig catcher chasing stray pigs on the run through Medieval Streets, to tales of death and disease, treasure hunts with historical treasure and a Viking with an axe to grind. These and lots more are on offer at Dublinia, this October as part of the “Celebrate bringing ‘History to Life’” festival, a four day event, running from Sat 23 Oct to Tues 26 Oct .
Dublinia has only been renovated recently and focuses on the exciting Viking and Medieval past of Dublin. The sights and sounds of Viking and Medieval Dublin will be brought to life during this mid-term break and visitors to the heritage centre Dublinia will be transported back in time. Admission to Dublinia is EUR 4.95 for children and EUR 6.95 for adults, family tickets are EUR 20.00 (for two adults and two children) and to launch their mid-term break series of events, Dublinia is very generous and is making SIX (!!) GROVE REUNION – TICKET COMPETITION
Did you grow up on Dublin’s Northside? Or were you a keen music fan when you were young(er)? Do you maybe remember “The Grove”!?!?!
For 30 years, from 1967 to 1997, Dublin’s longest running teenage disco, The Grove (Social Club), attracted teens from near and far to its northside location and some of you might have grown up with it or at least have heard of it. A number of times every year there are Grove Reunions and the next one is a Halloween Reunion in The Good Bits (Store Street, Dublin 1). HOT DOGS FOR DUBLIN COMMUTERS
The Irish company Granby who produces Irish sausages since 1933 came up with a new and old idea. It has been done in olden times, but like so good ideas, it got replaced by “progress”. Granby will soon start selling “Hot Mollys”, Irish sausages in hot bread rolls, to commuters from special trikes (bikes with 3 wheels) in Dublin Streets. I think it’s a good idea in principle. I am not sure, though if tooo many people would want to buy such a hot dog on the way to work between 07:00-10:00, which is the time during which you can buy them. And the other big element is the price. If they can offer the hot dogs for a really low price, they will be snapped up. But if the price is too high, then the Hot Mollys will be gone again soon.

IRELAND’S KEBABS IN THE NEWS
One of the biggest German magazines, Focus, has a popular online presence and they were reporting about the dying of pubs in Ireland. www.focus.de/reisen/reisefuehrer/irland/tid-20052/irland-das-stille-sterben-der-pubs_aid_558756.html
The reasons given wer high prices and reduced alcohol limits and the smoking ban, so nothing new. But there was one piece that I found interesting (it is on Page 2 of the online article). The author mentioned that a pint of Guinness in Temple Bar can still cost up to EUR 5 and then he continues saying that a Doner Kebab is in most places still at least EUR 7.50. I hadn’t thought of Kebab’s as a measure for high prices, but I can see the point. I am not sure how much a Kebab is in Germany at the moment, but if we use it to compare prices between “rip-off Ireland” and ok-priced Ireland, then we should hope that the Kebab will drop to EUR 5 (or so) soon again. Let’s do this: Only once the EUR 5 mark is reached we will start complaining about the terrible state of the economy, but at the same time we will start celebrating that now we get value for money again.

TRAFFIC IN THE CITY CENTRE – SPEED LIMITS
The car ban at College Green will remain in place over Christmas after it was lifted for last year’s Christmas period. Oddly the shop owners seemingly didn’t provide information that would substantiate their concerns about a negative impact of the car ban. Interesting! But even more interesting is that the new speed limit of 30 km/h in the City Centre, a reduction of 20 km/h from 50 km/h only brought the speed down by 1 (ONE!!!!) km/h. “Total failure” comes to mind! www.rte.ie/news/2010/1004/dublinbus.html

CLOSURE OF SMITHFIELD HORSE MARKET?
Last Sunday the Oktober-Horse Market took place and I had mentioned this event. In my listing I had mentioned as well that the Horse Market is a contentious subject. Animal protection organisations are certain that the horses traded are often not treated properly and for people living in the area and for businesses the mayhem of the market is something they would like to get rid of. I can understand that, but I would expect that once the market is terminated the trading still continues but in a context that can not be supervised by police and Animal Protection organisations. REUNION OF KIBBUTZ VOLUNTEERS
Aya Sagie from Kibbutz Zora’s contacted me with information about a planned reunion of Irish Kibbutz volunteers in Dublin from 22-24 November. The kibbutz movement in Israel is 100 years old this year. This movement, which began 40 years before the foundation of the state of Israel, brought together people from many nations, including Ireland, in an experiment that combined communal living with productive agricultural work. To celebrate the centenary of this non-governmental movement, Irish kibbutz veterans are invited to a reunion to take place in November in Dublin. This is an opportunity, regardless of current political or other views, to share and swap memories of the kibbutz experience with others. CHILDREN’S BOOK FESTIVAL 2010
The Children’s Book Festival 2010 will run from 01-31 Oct all over Ireland. Marking its twentieth consecutive year, this October’s Children’s Books Festival is encouraging young people across Ireland to Make Friends With Reading, with hundreds of exciting book-themed events and activities taking place nationwide. The fun kicks off on Fri 01 Oct, with 50+ authors and illustrators due to visit libraries, schools and arts centres throughout the land over the course of the month. Other activities include storytelling sessions, printmaking workshops, quizzes and competitions and many more, ensuring there will be countless opportunities to strike-up new friendships with books of all styles and genres.
This year’s programme will see a particularly strong focus on illustration and comic books, with artists Bruce Ingman (Boing!, When Martha’s Away, The Pencil), Niamh Sharkey (I’m a Happy Hugglewug, The Ravenous Beast), Sarah McIntyre (Vern and Lettuce, Morris the Mankiest Monster) and Gary Northfield (Derek the Sheep, The Beano), sharing their skills in a special series of creative workshops.

WRITING 3.0 – FARMLEIGH HOUSE + FINGAL
Writing 3.0, Fingal’s Annual Writers’ Festival (organised by Fingal County Libraries and Fingal Arts Office) will take place this month. Writing 3.0 focuses on the writing process in the twenty-first century; how it evolves from the blank page across a range of interactive and ever changing technologies associated with creativity that potentially reaches vast audiences.

All events are free, but ticketed. Tickets (max 2) will be offered through a lottery system. A deadline for entering the lottery is not mentioned, so you still might be lucky. ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS – ROYAL IRISH ACADEMY
The Public Seminar “Revealing the Past: Archaeological Excavations in Ireland” is taking place on Fri 08 Oct at 10:00 in the Royal Irish Academy, Dawson Street. Since 1970 the Academy Committee for Archaeology has managed an annual fund provided by the National Monuments Service, which has financed over ninety excavations in Ireland. This is the only fund in Ireland for independent research excavation and has enabled scholars to make a substantial contribution to our knowledge of the past. This public seminar aims to showcase to a wide audience, the results of several recently funded excavations, with a particular emphasis on investigating key issues in prehistoric Ireland, as well as church sites, religious foundations and burial practice. HARD WORKING CLASS HEROES – FESTIVAL
Hard Working Class Heroes (HWCH) is an Independent showcase festival for Irish Bands & Musicians. 100 Bands will perform over 3 Days in 7 Venues and all is accessible through 1 ticket (EUR 22.50 per day or EUR 49.00 for all three days). The festival will run from Thurs 07- Sat 09 Oct and the impressive line-up is here www.hwch.net/2010_bands.html.
In addition to the night time gigs, there are free daytime events taking place as part of Hard Working Class Heroes this year and it is not just one or two events, but a whole array of “HWCH & The City” events which will bring artists out of the night time venues and into the city centre. DYING OF PATRICK IRELAND – FILM SCREENING – IFI
The Film Screening of “The Dying of Patrick Ireland” will take place on Fri 08 Oct at 19:00 in the Irish Film Insitute, 6 Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. The film documents the symbolic burial of Patrick Ireland, the alter ego of the distinguished Irish artist Brian O’Doherty. The Dying of Patrick Ireland screening coincides with the gift to the Irish Museum of Modern Art by Brian O’Doherty and his wife art historian Barbara Novak of more than 70 artworks from their own collection.

OKTOBERFEST – GEORGE’S DOCK
The Erdinger Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place in George’s Dock in the IFSC from 30 Sept-10 Oct. You will get to drink German Beer, listen to German Music (Cough…cough!) and eat German food, like pigs trotters and Bratwurst and Fleischkaese (fine meatloaf), etc. The location seems to be perfect especially because it is one of the few locations in Dublin where you are allowed to drink alcohol outside (It is illegal on public ground!) However, there is a BIG problem about the venue. This big problem has to do with the Irish approach to crowd control. While the organisers allow the platform in George’s Dock to be absolutely packed during the day, in the evening suddenly the platform is less than half full of people. And oddly “evening” started at 18:30 last night. The result is a LONG queue of people who all want to get onto the platform in the George’s Dock. Some people were telling stories of a wait of more than 2 hours, others (myself included) walked away because it is just not worth it. Pity! The Oktoberfest is extremely popular, but if you don’t come REALLY early don’t even expect to get onto the platform. Luckily there is some food and beer available just outside the CHQ building as well, so you don’t have to get onto the platform. No music, no pigs trotters and no Fleischkaese, though! Opening Hours are Mon-Sat 12:00-00:30 and Sun 12:00-20:00. There is still this odd EUR 5 voucher/wristband thing that nobody was able to explain to me, but you can read about that on oktoberfest-dublin.com/

OPEN HOUSE DUBLIN
The fifth Open House Dublin returns on 07-10 October and over one weekend, Dublin buildings of all types and periods will open up their doors to allow you explore the architecture of our. All is completely free, but requires some pre-planning. On www.architecturefoundation.ie/openhouse you find the complete list of available buildings and you will see that some are only open on Saturday and other are only open on Sunday. In addition you will see that there are many buildings where you have to pre-book a visit and if you have not done so, it is unfortunately too late now. All pre-booked tours are booked out. The organisers claim that nearly all tours are on a first-come, first-served basis, but browsing through the list I definitely got the impression that nearly all of the really interesting buildings are not freely available any more and because I totally forgot to pre-book. My Open House 2010 will be a bit disappointing. In previous years I absolutely loved it. I visited Liberty Hall, Busaras, Customs House, Department of Foreign Affairs, Government Buildings (incl. the Taoiseach’s office) and a few other buildings that you normally would NOT be able to get into. Seeing the Busaras from the inside and hearing what the architects had intended when they planned the building made me appreciate the building a lot more. So, check out if there are some buildings you can find out more about. You might have to queue a bit, but it is worth it. DUBLIN SIMON COMMUNITY FUN RUN
The 27th Dublin Simon Community Fun Run will take place on Sat from 10:30. Participation is not free (EUR 25), but you can view the event, if you are interested, for free. As part of Open House Dublin, the Science Gallery will screen Charles & Ray Eames’ influential film ‘Powers of Ten Day’ on Sun at 16:00.
Powers of Ten is a 1968 American documentary short film written and directed by Ray Eames and her husband, Charles Eames, re-released in 1977. The film depicts the relative scale of the Universe in factors of ten. The film is an adaptation of the 1957 book Cosmic View by Kees Boeke, and more recently is the basis of a new book version. Following the film, there will be a discussion with a leading architect and a scientist, each discussing how the concept of scale is integral to their respective fields.

SECRET MATHEMATICIANS – LECTURE
“The Secret Mathematicians” by Professor Marcus du Sautoy is a lecture in the RDS in context with the Maths Week 2010 from 09-16 October (www.mathsweek.ie). “In recognition of the importance of mathematics across so many aspects of our everyday lives we are pleased that as part of Maths Week 2010 Professor Marcus du Sautoy (Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford) will be presenting a lecture which will explore the often unseen artistic side of mathematics. From composers to painters, writers to choreographers, the mathematician’s palette of shapes, patterns and numbers has proved a powerful inspiration. Often subconsciously artists are drawn to the same structures that fascinate mathematicians as they constantly hunt for interesting new structures to frame their creative process.

“Secularism- Is Religion Harmful??” is the title of a talk by Paul Cliteur at 19:00 on Mon 11 Oct in The Chamber, Graduates Memorial Building (GMB) Trinity College, Dublin 2. Invited by the Theo Society, Professor Paul Cliteur argues that the Christian scriptures contain passages which justify and encourage violence and terror. Cliteur criticizes many politically correct thinkers who deny that there is anything wrong with religion. A well argued secular outlook is the cure for the problem of religiously inspired and justified terrorism. The secular outlook is the moral and political ideal for the open society to protect itself from the enemy of religious terrorism. Paul Cliteur is Professor of Jurisprudence at the University of Leiden and has recently published “The Secular Outlook: In Defense of Moral and Political Secularism”.

ALCHEMIST CAFÉ – RANDOMNESS – DISCUSSION
After a very very long break since May the Alchemist Café is back. The Alchemist Café is a forum where complex scientific concepts are explained to and discussed by “normal” people. The next Café is entitled “The Dr Maths Randomness Show” and it takes place on Tues 12 Oct at 19:30 in The Mercantile, Dame St, Dublin 2.
Understanding if events are random or have some underlying structure is a fascinating area of mathematics, filled with great discoveries. The discussion will be led by Steve Humble (aka Dr Maths) who believes that the fundamentals of mathematics can be taught via practical experiments. He holds the Guinness World Record for the most children learning maths outside the classroom.
In March 2010 he published an academic paper on the educational benefits of learning maths outside the classroom and is presently researching into the effect of parents on their children’s homework His latest academic paper is called The Humble-Nishiyama Randomness Game which gives a flavour of his other two mathematical loves – Magic and Randomness. For the last seven years he has written a fortnightly newspaper column called Dr Maths. AZOUZ BEGAG – MEET THE WRITER – ALLIANCE FRANCAISE
Azouz Begag, born in Lyon, is a French writer, politician and researcher in economics and sociology. His best known literary work is the autobiographical novel Le Gone du Chaâba (1986). Azouz Begag has been the Delegate Minister for Equal Opportunities of France between 2005 and 2007. His academic career as well as his political career have centred around the problems of unequal opportunity for those brought up in industrial suburbs and ghettos, les Beurs (young French of Maghreb descent).

To get free tickets it was possible to send an email to info@slp.ie but I am not sure if you can still get free tickets at this late stage. The Over 50s show is the only lifestyle event of its type for the older generation. Up to 100 exhibitors will welcome the expected 15,000 visitors.

IDEAL HOME SHOW – RDS
The autumn Ideal Home Show will take place at the RDS Simmonscourt from Fri 22 – Mon 25 Oct. The Ideal Home Show is Ireland’s biggest exhibition for home improvers. 30,000 visitors will meet 300 exhibitors who show the latest ideas in home improvement, design, interiors, furniture and décor, kitchens and bathrooms, energy saving technology and a wide range of lifestyle and wellbeing products. CHRISTMAS STARTING IN JULY?
When I grew up Christmas started around the 01 December. Last year, I said that we should be glad to have Halloween in Ireland, because it provided a natural starting point for looong extended pre-Christmas period. This year things are even crazier: The Central Hotel in Exchequer Street has a Christmas tree up in their Library Bar since the beginning of October. This is complete madness and the Manager of the hotel should be rewarded with a lump of coal for Christmas (wiki.answers.com/Q/Where_did_the_lump_of_coal_Christmas_tradition_start) for damaging the Christmas spirit. :-) www.tribune.ie/news/home-news/article/2010/oct/03/plenty-of-room-at-this-dublin-inn-for-arrival-of-c/ If we don’t teach people like that we soon will have the first Christmas tree up in July! :-o

FORMER TAOISEACH IN THE CUPBOARD?
It is odd to watch TV and suddenly to see the person that was once running this country and is still a member of the parliament sitting in a cupboard (!), advertising a somewhat less respected newspaper. That same person would like to become the next president of Ireland!? Many say that after this ad his suitability for that job is even more called in question. Considering that he clearly had to agree to being filmed sitting in a cupboard, maybe his judgement is even more clouded than previous tribunal proceedings indicated? www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-0PQATQuQI
