Hi all!
Did you enjoy the Dublin City Soul Festival? After last week’s good start, the Outdoor-Festival Season continues at this bank holiday weekend with the Maritime Festival and in addition there are movies in Dun Laoghaire and the great ToeJam Car Boot Sale takes place. In Greystones an Americana & Roots Festival is taking place and – a little further – in Leixlip a town festival is the main event this weekend.
I guess we can’t complain about being bored in our little Ireland! ;-)

Hey, we didn’t have a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) Meetup yet this year and next week is the 3rd anniversary of the Event Guide. Are you interested in a party/meet-up. It won’t be next week, it takes a bit more planning, but if you would come to it or have some ideas of where and when, drop me mail! dublineventguide@gmail.com
A good number of people are joining our Dublin Event Guide Community every week. In most weeks it is between 30 and 70 new subscribers! But I am sure some of you still know some people that are not on the list yet. Spread the word, let everybody know and tell them that to subscribe they only need to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com. This might help you: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

The “Feel Good Slot” this week will be about “attitude and gratitude” again. Zig Ziglar talks about you hating your job and doing something about it. If you are unhappy in your job, definitely check this video, and if you are unhappy about another aspect of your life, then make sure that you check it out too! If you like it, tell me! If you don’t like it, tell me too! dublineventguide@gmail.com www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRMogDrHnMQ

This week Anna-Lena F. sent me a donation and I appreciate her support hugely. If you want to support my weekly work too and want to make me smile, you can donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-)
You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

——————————————————–
This weekend, I will definitely go to the Maritime Festival and to the new Point Village Market, probably on Sunday or Monday. In addition I plan to visit Bloom in Phoenix Park, the ToeJam Car Boot Sale on Sun and would like to go to the Americana & Roots Festival in Greystones (see Saturday). Maybe I will make the Crafty Market in the new venue on Sunday as well? Well, after that programme, I probably need ANOTHER day off to recover. ;-) I hope nobody is complaining about two few events in Dublin. :-)

______Competition______________
CHARITY 90s NIGHT – TICKET COMPETITION
A friend of mine, Laura Ryder, has gone a little mad. ;-) …in a good way obviously! She has decided to climb the Kilimanjaro in August! Now, as far as I know, Laura is not a regular at high mountains and an 8 day climb is not for everybody, so it is definitely a challenging goal. And to make it all worth a LOT more, she is raising money for the teenage mental health charity Headstrong and the Simon Community with it. On Fri 11 June she is inviting everybody to the Sugar Club, Leeson Street, for a 90s night with live music from “Pump Up The Jam”. The event starts at 20:00 and it is important that you are there BEFORE 23:00 because if you arrive after that time then the next act on the evening gets all the money and NOT the charities. Admission is EUR 10 and if you arrive before 23:00 Laura’s charities get the money AND you are still allowed to stay for the following gig which is a Brazilian night. Two gigs for the price of one! If you can’t make it but want to contribute anyway you can search for “Laura Ryder” on www.mycharity.ie. Laura’s facebook page is www.facebook.com/lollipopversuskilimanjaro and the event page is
www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=125762744104854
To get the word out, Laura has mad one pair of tickets available for a competition in the Event Guide and if you want to have a chance to win this pair, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with LAURA in the subject and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 17:00 on Tuesday 08 June.
GETTING PUBLISHED SEMINAR – TICKET COMPETITION
Ian Oliver from the Centre for Creative Practices (www.cfcp.ie) made three tickets available for a “Getting Published” seminar on 29 May in the CFCP. Ian did the draw for the three winners and I have to get the names from him to share with you. So, they will be included next week.
ANDRAE CROUCH + ISRAEL HOUGHTON – TICKET COMPETITION
The Grammy-decorated Gospel Singers Andrea Crouch and Israel Houghton were in Dublin and Gospel Music Ireland (www.gospelmusicireland.com) have made a pair of tickets available for the concert on Tue 01 June in the National Basketball Arena. The winner was Felicity Williams! Congratulations!
BLOOM IN THE PARK – PHOENIX PARK
The Bord Bia Bloom festival is taking place from 03-07 June in Phoenix Park. It is not a free event but there are a lot of special offers on tickets in advance of the show and kids go free. AND Bord Bia have made 5 sets of 2 Bloom tickets for a competition in the Event Guide. The winners are Sinead Whelehan, Melanie Kovero, Anna Pas, Killian Feehan, Gillian Conway and they should all have received their tickets in the post. Congrats!
Bloom promises to be a great day out with something planned for all ages; it is a unique show showcasing the finest Irish food, drink and of course horticulture. For any budding gardeners it will provide lots of inspiration and opportunities to pick up some beautiful plants, flowers, seeds and shrubs. Or if you want to explore growing your own fruit and vegetables then you’ll get lots of tips on how to start at the show. But if gardening isn’t your thing then you’ll still have plenty to keep you busy including the Food Market with almost 50 artisan producers; the Best in Season tent featuring growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables; the Lost & Forgotten Skills marquee where you can learn various food-making skills such as jam or bread-making; the cookery stage with chefs like Darina Allen, Neven Maguire, Jenny Bristow and Catherine Fulvio; enjoy a drink in the Bloom Inn – serving the best of Irish craft beers and spirits (many of whom were at SeptemberFest in Farmleigh last year). With an outdoor music stage, picnic area, engaging spaces, kids playground, Imaginosity and lots more besides, the Bloom festival really offers something for everyone. Bloom takes place in the Phoenix Park from 03-07 June. See www.bloominthepark.com for tickets and more information.
NODISKO – CRAWDADDY
Nodisko at Crawdaddy is a weekly live band and indie/electro club. On Fri 04 June from 23:00 (Late show) the Pod and NoDisko Present “Teenagersintokyo Live” plus NoDisko Dj’s. Tickets are EUR 10 incl booking fee and can be bought on Ticketmaster and offline at many other ticket outlets. CrawDaddy is in Old Harcourt Station, Harcourt Street, Dublin 2 (next to the Odeon). www.pod.ie
Ben Delaney from NoDisko made 3 pairs of tickets available for the event on 04 June and I will let you know who won in next week’s Event Guide.
www.teenagersintokyo.com
All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________
FIVE HUGHES&HUGHES BOOK SHOPS RE-OPEN
Five of the former Hughes&Hughes book shops that closed when the chain went into receivership in February have or will re-open shortly after they were bought by a company called Sivota Ltd. The shops are in St Stephen’s Green shopping centre, Dundrum Town Centre, Omni shopping centre in Santry, in the Pavilions shopping centre in Swords and in Ennis. www.rte.ie/business/2010/0603/hughes.html Some might think it is odd that the person that was heavily involved when the company failed, is now heavily involved in buying these shops again (possibly debt free!?). www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2010/0414/1224268308960.html Isn’t it great how companies can do that? :-/ And who cares about the suppliers that lose a LOT when a company closes down, doesn’t pay the debt, but then re-appears again debt-free.
WOMEN JOGGING IN DUBLIN
Every year when spring comes out I realise at some point that there is an overproportional amount of women running/jogging/power walking on the streets of Dublin’s suburbs. Wondering why that suddenly is the case and going through the list of upcoming events, I realise every year, that it is 3-5 days before the Women’s Mini Marathon. :-D Is it the panic that drives the female runners onto the street when – just a couple of days before the 10km run – they realise that they didn’t train or prepare as much as they had originally planned? ;-)
SUMMER JOB FOR SPORTS TEACHERS/ACTIVITY LEADERS – SPAIN
Chester College in beautiful Santiago de Compostela (Spain) is looking for 2 energetic female Sports Teachers (or Sports Monitors) or Camp Leaders with competence in Youth Work/Outdoor Pursuits for four weeks in July 2010. The Chester College Summer Camp is for Spanish students learning English and for international students learning Spanish, so the main language will be English, but some Spanish skills would be of benefit. Send your CV and the phone numbers of two references to info@chestercollege.org as soon as possible and before Tuesday 08 June! www.chestercollege.org (I know this is not really Dublin News, but a close friend of mine and strong supporter of the Event Guide is involved.)
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 6500+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
WORKISNOTAJOB – CREATIVE STUDIO
Dublin based designer Catharina Bruns is happy to announce the recent launch of her creative studio workisnotajob. The new homepage www.workisnotajob.com is now online with a web shop offering a range of highly creative services and products.
workisnotajob. workisnotajob is the name and idea behind a brand new creative studio dedicated to design, typography and visual communication. Designer and founder Catharina Bruns, who is based in Dublin but originally comes from Hamburg in Germany originally wrote a design blog and when this blog grew really popular she migrated it to the production of real products and evolved to the formation of a creative studio and webshop. Have a look at www.workisnotajob.com

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be a inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.
MOMENTS IN TIME – POWERSCOURT GALLERY
‘Moments in Time’ is a new exhibition of original photographic views of the old and new world. It will be on show from 03.14 June in the Powerscourt Gallery, The Ballroom, Top Floor Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, D2. www.powerscourtgallery.com

TOEJAM CAR BOOT SALE – BERNARD SHAW
The best car boot sale of them all is taking place again in the Bernard Shaw Pub in South Richmond Street, near Portobello. It is the ToeJam Car Boot Sale on 06 June. It is not the things that you can buy that are so great, no it is the atmosphere there (and maybe some memories ;-) ). The ToeJam CBS is just different and zany (in a good way ;-) ). It starts at 13:00 and runs until 19:00 with a party in the pub until late after that. If you have never been there, have a look at this short video clip:

MARITIME FESTIVAL

OUTDOOR MOVIES IN THE PARK – DUN LAOGHAIRE
(see Saturday for details)
HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
And another month over: Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. It starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming relatively early. I would recommend around 09:00-10:00 experience it at its peak. Experience it for yourself, it is a different world!! …and definitely not what you would expect in the centre of a European capital. ;-) Nick Carosello went there last month and took this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWQnmu8K-IQ
I know that there are concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market. Please note that I am not suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts!! Instead I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses. Your presence there will not change anything good or bad and if Dublin City didn’t allow this open and somewhat controllable market, the traders would sell their horses elsewhere where the ISPCA and the police could not be present. So leaving that market in place is probably a good idea and better for the animals than driving the trading into the underground.

BANK HOLIDAY
A number of events that normally take place on a Sunday evenint (.e.g Comedy Crunch in Shebeen Chic) are moved to the Monday evening on a Bank Holiday weekend. Along the same lines, a number of Regular Events listed below for Monday, might no take place because it is a bank holiday. So you better check before you go to a regular event.
MARITIME FESTIVAL
(See Saturday for details)
OUTDOOR MOVIES IN THE PARK – DUN LAOGHAIRE
(see Saturday for details)
WOMEN’S MINI MARATHON
On Mon 07 June the yearly Women’s Mini Marathon will take place. Approx. 40,000 (!!!) women will walk, jog, trot or run the 10 km course for their chosen charity. Men are not allowed to take part. Until about 2 years ago men were allowed to help raising funds for charities and to run along with their female team mates if they were dressed up as women, but this is now not allowed anymore. The Women’s Mini Marathon begins at Fitzwilliam Square and finishes at St Stephen’s Green, taking in a loop around Ballsbridge and Donnybrook in south Dublin. In 2007, the race raised more than EUR 10 mio. If you haven’t registered yet, it is unfortunately too late for this year, but you can still watch and – surprise – men are allowed to watch and cheer the runners on as well. I wonder when that will be changed! ;-) Similar events typically start in the morning, but this Mini Marathon kicks off at 15:00. Wide reaching road closures come in effect well before that, so avoid the area of Stephen’s Green, Merrion Square and Fitzwilliam Square. www.womensminimarathon.ie

FIFA WORLD CUP 2010
Today the World Championship of football (soccer) will kick off in South Africa. Without a doubt it will bring back memories (for example of a fateful game Ireland vs France) and it will create stress, excitement and annoyance in some people. I am not a big football fan normally, but the World Cup is something special, so I will watch some games and I think life is too short to get annoyed over it as many people (and a higher proportion of women) do. Go for a walk, read a book or – even better – just join in and enjoy the even. ;-) The matches in the group stages (until 25 June) are at 12:30, 15:00 and the latest game at 19:30, so unless you go for replays, all is done by 21:15 ;-). A good Match schedule is here world-cup.irishtimes.com/?mi=3

CYCLING RACES – DOPING AND CHEATING?
I know we have never heard anything like that from the cycling sports. :-) But there are some new rumours. I know this might not be of interest to everyone, but I came across an article in a German magazine this week that was talking about a potential new way of cheating at cycling races. If it is true, it will leave you speechless! It is alleged that Fabian Cancellara is using a small engine (!!) in his bike to help him during bike races. The start of the video clip is very technical and goes on for a little long, but move forward to 5:25 and have a look a Cancellara’s amazing uphill performance. VERY odd! www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Nd13ARuvVE

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
