Hi all!

I SHOULD start writing the Event Guide at 19:00 on a Thursday, so that approx. 15 hours later at around 10:00 it arrives in your Inbox. BUT, for some reason there are always interesting events taking place on a Thursday and as a consequence I start a LOT later than I should. Last night I went to the European Young Professionals (EYP) event in the Hibernian Club on St. Stephen’s Green. The topic was “Ideas in Action! – Turn your business ideas into reality” and in addition to interesting talks by 6 entrepreneurs, there was a competition: 8 Teams had 15 minutes to invent a business idea and then had to present their idea to the 6 “EYP Dragons”. An interesting challenge! After 15 minutes it looked bad, the little team I was in had a number of ideas, but it was hard to put them into a profitable structure. Well, some major improvisation during the presentation followed and we won the main price of the evening! Yippee! ;-) EYP events have a new theme every time, but if you get a chance, go to them. They are fun! ;-) The next one is on 20 May and I will tell you about it beforehand.

Another great thing about the event was that I met a good few people who are part of our great Dublin Event Guide Community. If you want to make sure that all your friends will join us too in this community of more than 6100 people with a common interest, then please tell them about the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Please help by distributing these flyers and poster:
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf
It would be great if you could print them and hang them up or hand them out. If you could hang them up or hand them out but CAN’T print them, let me know and I will find a solution! dublineventguide@gmail.com

This week’s “Feel Good Slot” will try to cover one of the most important ingredients to “feeling good”. This ingredient is smiling/laughing. And if you ever had planned to feel bad but then had to smile about something you know what I am talking about. Alicia sent me this clip www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8gKmQ6Hrro It is about a football reporter (Chris Kamara) on Sky Sports who is reporting about a football game and missed a red card! Have a look!

No donations last week, but in case YOU want to help me working for 15 hours through the Thursday night with some incentive ;-) , you can still help! It is never too late: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

This newsletter is a non-paid spare-time activity of mine, not a commercial project and if you like it you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-)

You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm if you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend doesn’t really bring us many big events. There are a few nice things like the Oscar Wilde Parade on Saturday or the Story Telling workshop if that interests you and definitely the Japan Day in Farmleigh House on Sunday. But otherwise it might be a weekend where going for a walk in the spring weather could be an interesting alternative to indoor events. On Monday the Trinity (TCD) Week with some very interesting events starts and on Tuesday the highlight of the week is the Haendel Day. It is just a pity that this day is on a Tuesday when most people will miss all events. If you have time and don’t work, then go for the “Messiah on the Street” at 13:00 in Fishamble Street. For the last 2 years it rained on that day, maybe this time will be better.

______Competition______________

CASTLEPALOOZA MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL – COMPETITION

Up to 45 acts will be performing over two days and festival-goers will find the perfect recipe for a fantastic festival, where they can sit back, relax and soak up the sounds in the breathtaking grounds of Charleville Castle, Tullamore.
Headed up by music mavericks Mercury Rev who are exclusive to Castlepalooza this Summer, the August Bank Holiday weekend will see well established acts, such as Fionn Regan and Wave Machines, teamed with quality up-and-coming bands taking to the stage amidst a cocktail of fun and cultural activities.”
Tickets are limited to 3,000 so get yours before they’re gone on www.castlepalooza.com or from usual outlets. Two-day tickets including camping are EUR 99 plus service charge. (There are some premium tickets available as well if you prefer a more sophisticated camping experience. Check the website for details.)
The nice people from Castle Palooza have made a pair of tickets available for a lucky reader of the Dublin Event Guide and you should definitely enter this competition. All you have to do is to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject PALOOZA and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. In addition you have to tell me how many people are on the picture of “Wave-Machines”. Just go to www.castlepalooza.com and then select LINE-UP to find the picture in the first row. Your mail has to be with me by 15:00 on Wed 21 April. www.castlepalooza.com

MOUNTAIN SAFETY TRAINING – COMPETITION
The Adventure Company “Outdoors Ireland” is running a Mountain Safety Promotion in the Wicklow Mountains on 11+18 April, in conjunction with the Great Outdoors Store in Dublin. The fun and intensive half-day workshops will give hill walkers the opportunity to learn map reading skills, develop safety awareness, take compass bearings and deal with emergencies. Hiking Boots are provided and everybody from beginner to expert is welcome. Pre-booking for the course is essential: Ring 086 860 4563 or send a mail to info@outdoorsireland.com Participants are asked to pay what they think the workshop is worth; once they’ve covered the initial workshop cost of EUR 45 per person. You can still register if you are interested!
Outdoors Ireland were giving away two free places to the readers of the Dublin Event Guide for the training on Sun 11 April. The draw has been done as far as I know, but I didn’t get the mail with the name of the winner yet, so I will let you know next week.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

If you work in a company or have your own company where running a competition in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) would help to reach the 6000 readers of the Event Guide, just drop me a mail and we can discuss the details: dublineventguide@gmail.com If you organise a non-free event and want to have it listed in this Event Guide then through a competition you have the opportunity to do that.

______Dublin News______________

RYANAIR HAPPILY SCREWS YOU
Definitely not known for customer service or customer care, Ryanair seems to reach new lows. On Tuesday Ryanair announced that the baggage charges for check-in baggage on Ryanair flights will be increased by EUR 5 from EUR 15 to EUR 20 in July and August. www.rte.ie/business/2010/0406/ryanair.html Why, you wonder? Why only for 2 months and exactly during the time when parents travel with children where hand luggage only is not an option? It seems the answer is: Because they can!! :-/ Since Ryanair just two weeks ago terminated the flight to “my” local airport in Karlsruhe-Baden my tolerance for Ryanair’s customer ignorance was already at its limit. But surprisingly they do manage to get worse and worse.

THE DUBLINER GOING free
The Dubliner was for many years an independent monthly magazine that was sold in newsagents, most recently for EUR 2. This was changed completely! Now The Dubliner is a free weekly add-on to the Evening Herald on Thursdays.
I don’t know about you, but I was surprised about this decision. The Evening Herald is not exactly the newspaper that I would have linked with The Dubliner. Additionally I am wondering if a) The Dubliner was convinced by the Evening Herald people to help improving the sales of the newspaper or if b) The Dubliner was in difficulty and moving from independent to a free add-on was the best way to save the magazine? Either way the development is a little strange. www.herald.ie/national-news/city-news/the-glossy-new-read-for-dublin-free-with-the-evening-herald-tomorrow-and-every-thursday-2128297.html
(You wonder why the word “free” is not in capitals in the headline for this article? “Spam Filters” is the answer! Yes, “free” is fine but the same words in capital is spam suspicious. Argh!)

ONE CITY, ONE BOOK: THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY
2010 is the fifth year of the Dublin: One City, One Book project, designed to encourage everyone in the city to read the same book during the month of April each year. The project promotes reading in a city which boasts one of the world’s greatest literary heritages. Dublin: One City One Book is a Dublin City Council initiative led by the City Library Service in association with Penguin Books, Dublin BIDS, The Irish Times and Dublin Tourism. The ‘Dublin: One City, One Book’ choice for April 2010 is “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Dubliner Oscar Wilde, which was first published in 1890. Throughout the month, the libraries in Dublin invite to a variety of many free events and under the menu item PROGRAMME on the website you can find all the details. The number of events is too high to mention all events, so please have a look at: www.dublinonecityonebook.ie/

DUBLIN IS CHEAP?
Yes, we still can’t believe it! Allegedly Dublin is now one of the cheapest capitals in Europe www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/dublin-named-as-one-of-the-cheapest-capitals-in-europe-453070.html after previously being one of the most expensive cities in Europe www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2002/0709/1017357844709.html The two studies are not fully comparable because the current studies looks at cost for hotels etc as a relevant criteria, while the 2002 study looked at living cost (including food and rent etc)

SPANISH COURSE – IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS IN REAL SITUATIONS
Do you know some Spanish but want to improve your vocabulary and fluency? And do you prefer active learning to sitting passively on a chair? Cornelia K, a friend of mine and a very active and hugely helpful Dublin Event Guide Community Member is looking for people that would like to learn Spanish in real acted out scenarios. Because she couldn’t find a course in Dublin that is offering this learning in real situations, she decided to search for people that feel like her. Join her on
www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=373415454323 Please note, that the course the wants to organise, is not a drama class and is not targeted at stage actors and actresses. Instead, “learning in real situations” means that you emulate real day situations and learn by playing out this real situation. Help Cornelia if you are interested!

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 6000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More to come!

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

IF A SYSTEM IS WORKING…FIGHT IT!!??
I am sure you have read that you and I each will have a debt caused by the bailed out banks of more than 27,000 Euro. Apart from some greed, some over-exaggerated expectations of what success is in good times, some seriously dodgy and maybe even criminal behaviour of bankers the problem was caused to a large degree by a totally incapable regulator of the financial sector who either didn’t see what was going on or didn’t want to see it. The bad and dodgy regulator got fired, got an incredible farewell gift (probably for his “good work”) of EUR 200,000 and was replaced. A new regulator was appointed and the new guy looked at lots of companies it seems and found out that Quinn Insurance is in some trouble because the money that they have available is less then they should have. To me it seems this new regulator did a good job! But wait! What happened next? As soon as Quinn was in administration (means some external administrators will check if the company is still ok to continue or if maybe it should be wound down) the employees started to protest. I can understand that because they were made believe that all was well with the company and they didn’t want to see their company to get in trouble which could put their jobs at risk. But what I don’t get is how suddenly politicians attacked the regulator! Was it not exactly the influence of politicians that supported the previous corrupt or at least broken system? And should they not applaud a regulator that takes his job serious? I find it odd! This is what happened initially www.rte.ie/business/2010/0330/quinn.html and then the reaction of the TDs www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0407/breaking26.html

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
