Hi all!
Christmas time meant in the past that there would be lots of Christmas Parties/Drinks but this has changed in the last two years and this year it seems that more parties were cancelled than did take place. For me there is only one Christmas party this year in the context of my day job and guess when it took place. Yes, last night (Thursday)! Don’t they know that this is “Event Guide Night”?? Well, actually they didn’t mind too much. ;-) But I did go to the party and starting this Event Guide it is 01:00 on Friday morning. Hmmm, not so great, I know. I have to admit that I considered the possibility of skipping this week’s Event Guide. Writing for another 12 hours after a Christmas party doesn’t sound like lots of fun. But, hey, you know that you can rely on me and I wouldn’t want to disappoint you. So, here it is! Some sections are a little shorter than usual, but I am sure you forgive me. ;-)

For this week’s “Feel Good Slot” I have a suggestion for you: The pre-Christmas time is for many people not the easiest time. If they have no loved ones around or nearby, if they lost an important person or just because they are not feeling their best currently. If you know someone that is a little “under the weather”, i.e. someone that doesn’t feel his or her best. Do something nice for them. Maybe just listen to them or invite them for a coffee or buy them a tiny present or just say something nice to them. If you give love, you will receive love! Try it and allow yourself to feel good when you do something nice.

Next week will be a short week for me. Hurray! On Thursday I will go to Germany for a few days. I haven’t been there for many months, so it is time again. But it will be only a short visit and SOMEHOW I need to see how I can get an Event Guide out to you before I go. Not sure yet how I will manage, but you will be first to know. ;-)
This weekend I recommend that you go to the 12 Days of Christmas Market in the Docklands and to the ToeJam Car Boot Sale (Saturday). I will go to both. The Christmas Events at Farmleigh House sound great as well. They are a bit more tailored for children, but there is some good music performances. And then you should have a look at the x-Arts Market of the Centre for Creative Practices (see Saturday for more detail).
With the hot Christmas Phase approaching, the number of events during the week is not that huge anymore, but it would be a very odd time when Dublin wouldn’t offer any free cultural activities. :-)

DOCKLANDS CHRISTMAS MARKET
I mentioned in the SATURDAY section, but obviously this Christmas market is on every day from now until 23 December. Temple Bar didn’t bother to offer any Christmas activities, I didn’t even hear about the lighting of the Christmas lights in Temple Bar, which was a special occasion last year.
So, go to the Docklands and drink the Gluehwein and enjoy the atmosphere.

SAMUEL BECKETT BRIDGE OPENED
The Samuel Beckett Bridge that will connect Sir Rogerson’s Quay on the southisde of the Liffey with the IFSC area on the northside has been opened during the week. It will be one of the most important bridges across the Liffey, but with four lanes it is not particularly large…O’Connell Bridge has six lanes.

EUROPEAN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP
The 16th European Cross Country Championships 2009 will be held in Dublin on 13 Dec in Santry Park from 10:00-16:00. This is the first European Athletics Championship event ever to be held in Ireland and it would be great to celebrate that by getting as many people as possible to see it. CHRISTMAS STORY TELLING & PUPPET SHOWS
“Ignite your child’s imagination this Christmas with a host of free seasonal entertainment, including hilarious puppet shows and festive storytelling sessions, as part of the “BIDs for Kids” Winter programme.” (BID stands for Dublin City Business Improvement District.) Each weekend from the 15 Nov-12 Dec this unique way for kids and families to experience the magical atmosphere of Dublin City Centre this Christmas will take place in a number of city centre locations including Powerscourt Town House Shopping Centre, Ilac Shopping Centre, St Stephens Green Shopping Centre and Jervis Shopping Centre.
Each weekend, Conor Lambert’s Custard Pie Puppet Company will entertain and create a drama with live interactive puppet shows in the Ilac Centre and St Stephens Green Shopping Centres. They will perform stories like ‘Christmas Crackers’, which will bring lots of sing-a-long fun for all the family. Puppeteer Anne Fitzpatrick will perform the story of ‘The Witch in the Wood’. Story teller Susie Minto will take children on magical, mysterious and mythical journeys to other lands and times with her Christmas and Winter themed stories from many traditions – Irish, Russian, North American and European. She will be in the Powerscourt Town Centre and Jervis Street Shopping Centre.
There will be four events taking place each day, running for 30 minutes. Children aged two to ten years old, accompanied by an adult, are welcome. The sessions are free but pre-booking is essential as spaces are limited.

Do you agree that if you check for alcohol it is relevant to choose the right timing for it? What do you think is the right time? Maybe between 01:00 and 03:00 in the night? Or maybe even early in the morning? Yep, that’s probably the time when you would be able to catch offenders. But why, oh why, was I in an alcohol control check point twice in the last two weeks between 19:00 and 20:00 on the way INTO the City Centre? Is that not much too early and in the wrong direction?
Yes, I do realise that there will be SOME effect of such early tests in the wrong direction. It MIGHT frighten a few people and they might stay away from alcohol for the night. But since we have warnings and appeals against driving with alcohol everywhere, I guess the real fright will come with getting tested after having had some or too much alcohol.
And I still find it odd, that the police is not allowed to randomly check anybody at any point in any place, but only as official Garda checkpoints.
