Hi all!

I have a question for you: What fills more than 27 (!!) Ryanair planes or more than 5 times the complete National Concert Hall? ;-) Any guesses? – You want a clue? Hmm, it is a GREAT bunch of people with a common interest. I am sure by now you can guess what that is: It is YOU, the super Dublin Event Guide Community which grew to the amazing size of more than 5000 people! Hurray! Thanks to all of you for helping us to reach this big milestone! We even made it already above 5100!
I remember it well, it was in October 2008, so just one year ago, at the (free) Breakthrough to Success Seminar about which I told you a few times before (www.breakthroughtosuccess.eu/?af=CLA1035324) where you work on your goals and plans for your future. One of the goals that I wrote down was to arrive at 5000 readers by October 2009. And exactly as predicted and planned we have reached the subscriber number of 5000. :-) Is that where we will leave it? Goals achieved? Happy out? Let’s look at something else? NO WAY! :-) Achieving goals feels good and makes you want to achieve more goals. So, next stop is 7500 subscribers. You think that is too much? Definitely not! A BIG “Welcome!” to soo many new subscribers since last week! You are all very very welcome. And because there are so many new people that have joined us, let me give you a quick explanation about this newsletter and a “How to use the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” explanation:

The newsletter is very very long because there are soo many free events. It doesn’t make sense to me to withhold any of the events from you, so I include nearly all free events, which adds pages and pages. To subdivide the newsletter, there are headlines for different categories and days. If you can’s see the headlines, then check if your mail programme allows you to enable the display of pictures. Many people tell me that they read the Introduction, Competions, Joerg’s Picks and Dublin News and then at the bottom of the mail, the “This is Odd” section. All other days they only check when they have time to go to an event. There is a headline for every day and even within the events of a day, there is a chronological order by start time. Use this help to find your own strategy for reading this newsletter. ..And keep in mind that in a newspaper you wouldn’t expect to read every article either, so reading every word in this newsletter is NOT expected! :-)

Yes, I admit it! My outlook on life is in general quite happy and optimistic. But I certainly have “shadowy” moments like everybody else and know that during these moments, when the sun is not beaming down, but is hiding behind clouds, a little “lift” can help us to see the light again. So, at this point in the newsletter I often have a positive message or what I sometimes call a “Fell Good slot”. :-)

This weekend will be extremely busy. My plan is to go to lots of Open House events on Saturday and Sunday. In addition we are singing with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir at a RTE radio show on Saturday morning. Listen to RTE 1 (Radio) at 10:00. We will only sing one song at the beginning of the show and maybe another one at the end of the show close to 11:00, so don’t be late. :-)
The Darklight Festival is the other event that will probably keep me busy this weekend. Then on Tuesday the Green Drinks and the Alchemist Café are looking very interesting (but I will probably not be able to go), The Oktoberfest is ongoing and from Wednesday “Innovation Dublin” events are a must. Uff! :-) And I can already tell you that next weekend will bring LOTS of events again. All free! And the only place where you find out about all of them in a comprehensive way is in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)! Tell all your friends! ;-)

COOMBE CHARITY EVENT + THE SPECTRUMS – TICKET COMPETITION
The brilliant 80s Tribute Band “The Spectrums” is performing at a charity event for the neo natal ward of the Coombe Hospital on 22 Oct. The venue is Dandelion (Stephen’s Green, between Grafton Street and the Luas Stop) and The Spectrums and the organisers have made a pair of tickets available for a competition. I don’t know all the details yet, so I will run the competition next week, but watch out for it! I have heard the Spectrums a good few times and they are really great. SINGLES ADVENTURE WEEKEND – WINNER
Nathan Kingerlee of Outdoors Ireland (www.outdoorsireland.com) is running their first singles adventure weekend in Kerry. HEINEKEN EXPRESSION – LIVE UV ART AND MUSIC
Heineken is inviting to a very unique event where designers and illustrators compete live with each other in a UV art competition while at the same time bands provide a soundtrack for you to dance your little heart out. On 22 October the Tripod in Dublin (Harcourt Street) is the venue where the night will feature In Flagranti, The Field, Sarsparilla, Donal Dineen and The Juan MacLean (DJ Set). The UV Art Off is also not to be missed, with illustrators TADO, Serge Seidlitz, Phil Dunne, Steve Simpson, Chris Judge, Gaetan Billault, BRENB, danleo.

GAIETY NIGHT CLUB HAS CLOSED DOORS
This comes as a shock to many: The Irish Mail on Sunday has reported last week that after nearly 15 years the Gaiety Night Club (not the Theatre!) has closed its doors. The Gaiety Night Club was initially a Friday and Saturday Night event, recently it got reduced to Saturdays only. In different rooms up to four bands played, 2 DJs did their thing and 2 movies were screened (if I remember it right) from midnight until late. The “late” was the problem. Using its Theatre License the Gaiety Theatre was able to open until 03:30/04:00, but when the licensing laws changed they could only open until 02:30 like everybody else or had to apply for (and pay) for a license extension. The cost and hassle were deemed to high, it seems. The EUR 15 admission charge and the relatively high prices for drinks possibly did the rest to put the knife into this event.

LIVING ROOM CLOSED
One of Dublin’s most interesting live venues has seemingly closed its doors. Originally called Bleu Note (Capel Street) it had a slight focus on Jazz, but then widened the spectrum of music towards the end of its days. I guess it was new owners who then renamed it to “@The Living Room” and while the downstairs part was not continued, the upstairs pub still hosted life bands – for a very short while – until it closed doors again only very soon after opening. The name signs have been removed, which is usually not a good sign. The myspace web site still exists, the pubs has ceased to exist: www.myspace.com/at_thelivingroom

DUBLIN CITY REDUCES SPEED LIMIT
Dublin City has approved the reduction of speed limits on city centre roads from 50 km/h to 30 km/h (day or night) from 31 May 2010. www.rte.ie/news/2009/1005/roads.html While there are certainly some advantages, it will probably cause a further slow down of an already crawling City Centre. At the times when a lot of pedestrians are around, most cars have an average speed of 16 km/h and in the night when you can drive up to 50 km/h the “at risk” users are not really on the road. An important issue with all this: Can Dublin City please make sure that Taxi Drivers know about speed limits as well??? And maybe bus drivers could do a course where they have to cycle on a busy street and a long bus is coming dangerously close to them?

MAKE PLAYHOUSE PERMANENT – CAMPAIGN
Did you see Liberty Hall at the Liffey in the last week or so? Did you see the animations that are using Liberty Hall as a canvas? If you haven’t seen it yet, have a look once it gets dark. But hurry, because the plan is to end this display or creativity by Sunday. However, a group has formed on facebook that suggests/asks that the Playhouse Project should be made permanent. SLI EILE – DISCOVER GROUPS
Sli Eile, the Jesuit outreach organisation for young adults, runs eight different “Discover Groups” throughout Dublin. Discover Groups are groups of 6-8 people that meet weekly (for approx. 1.5 hrs) to discover and explore what “spirituality” is about and what it means to them. They provide a space to tease out the hopes and struggles associated with faith, relationships and authentic living as a Christian in today’s society.- The Discover Groups in Dublin are meeting in Trinity College (2 groups), Sli Eile in Gardiner Street (2 groups), Rathmines Parish Church(2 groups), Ballymun Parish, Beaumon Parish. DUBLIN SIMON FUN RUN – PHOENIX PARK
The 26th Dublin Simon Fun Run takes place on Sat 10 October 2009. The Dublin Simon 5 mile Fun Run is the longest running charity event in Phoenix Park. Participants are encouraged to dress up & impress with creative costumes. With plenty of musical entertainment for the supporters, the day has something to offer for participants and audience. www.funrun.ie The Simon Community is hoping to raise 100,000 Euro, so understandably it is not free to participate at the run (Start at 10:30), but supporting the event is free.

OPEN HOUSE 2009
Open House 2009 allows you look behind the doors of more than 120 buildings that normally would not be available to you. I am looking forward to visiting some of the unique buildings in Dublin. I would compare Open House with the Culture Night! It is a Culture Night (actually two whole days!) for buildings. ;-) You can nip from one place to the next, take part in a guided tour/viewing and then move on to the next venue.. The main part of Open House 2009 takes place on Sat and Sun (10-11 Oct) and you should have a look at the full programme to plan your visits a little bit and try to visit at least one or two buildings. DARKLIGHT FESTIVAL 2009
Since its inception in 1999, Darklight Festival has brought new and exciting work to Irish audiences through cinema, exhibition and performance and to an international audience via the Internet and Touring Programme initiated in 2002. Darklight is Ireland’s premier festival for filmmakers, animators and artists whose work explores the convergence of art, film and technology. RDS SPEAKER SERIES – “BYZANTIUM”
“Byzantium” by John Julius Norwich is the next lecture in the RDS Speaker Series. The Byzantine Empire lasted for over eleven centuries, for several of which it was the greatest and most powerful in the world; and yet – at least among the English-speaking countries – it is as if there has always been a conspiracy of silence about it.
John Julius Norwich, author of a three-volume history of Byzantium, traces its history from its foundation by Constantine the Great in 330 AD to its conquest by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II in 1453. This lecture will be richly illustrated, since the Byzantines produced some of the most beautiful art ever created.

The world is still searching for an explanation and solutions to this disaster. The National College or Ireland is bringing the “Legends in your Lunchtime” series back by popular demand. From 30 Sept-11 Nov a whole range of prominent speakers will talk about their life/job/business and you can listen and often even ask. RDS DARWIN LECTURE
The RDS has an very interesting free public lecture coming up:
The RDS Darwin200 Public Lecture: “Fragile Web, What Next for Nature?” will take place on Tues 24 November in the RDS Concert Hall at 19:00. In celebration of Darwin200 and to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of ‘The Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin, the RDS has invited Professor Jonathan Silvertown who will be speaking on the matter of biodiversity. This lecture marks the fourth in the series of RDS Irish Times ‘Ireland in 2030’ lectures which aims to look at the serious long-term challenges that face us today. FESTIVALS IRISH STYLE – VERY ODD – OKTOBERFEST
Last night I went to the Oktoberfest at George’s Dock next to the chq building at the IFSC. It was freezing cold and sitting outside is not the best thing at the moment, but the food was good and the tent/marquee was packed with beer glass swinging people. All seemed as expected had there not been a sign that I spotted on the way in. The same sign was in lots of other places as well and puzzled me. It said on this sign that after 22:00 there is a EUR 10 charge if you want to be at the Oktoberfest. I clearly remembered reading on the website “Free Admission” in BIG letters (and you can still see it on www.oktoberfest-dublin.com/index.htm and I hadn’t heard about any admission charge for the festival anywhere before.
Obviously even the organisers hadn’t planned that and a little later I found out that Dublin City is behind all this!
Seemingly it is a license condition for the festival this year that it can only open until 22:00. BUT if you pay money and therefore join a “private party” afterwards, then you are allowed to continue with the festivities until midnight.
Could you imagine in any other European country at beer festivals or wine festivals or just town festivals that there is an admission charge after a certain time to turn the festival into a pseudo “private party”? Why does only Ireland (or is it only Dublin) have such odd (I could find a lot stronger words!) rules?
I first thought that it might be because of the tendency to alcohol over-indulgence in Ireland, but wait… Dublin City didn’t force the festival to end at 22:00! Instead you are allowed to drink as much as you want as long as you pay another EUR 10. Thanks Dublin City for another nonsensical charge!

Odd how some people have an inability to see or accept the truth if they don’t appear in the best light in it. Ex- or fallen politicians are the worst. Bertie Ahern launches his autobiography.
