Hi all!

Is it just me or do the evenings feel SUDDENLY a lot shorter than – let’s say – last week? The summer is definitely coming to an end and last year I declared in the week after the Festival of World Culture that now the event season was over until March. Boy, was I wrong. ;-) Sure, there are a few less events and the outdoor event are even a little wetter, but you will NOT be bored. Just follow me and my suggestions. ;-)

This weekend we will have the Septemberfest at Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park, then there will be Culture Night on 25 Sept, Open House will take place in Oct, The World Food Fair/Festival is still ahead of us, Halloween Events will follow and then we are already approaching Christmas with markets etc. One thing I will miss this year is the October Fest in the Docklands. Last year was the first time it took place, but it was good and the food was delicious. No sign of it this year! Unfortunately the Dublin Docklands Authority is this year not entertaining as well as last year. No Urban Beach AND no October Fest? Hopefully they won’t cancel Christmas, or rather the Christmas Market! ;-)

Thanks this week to many of you helping to spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, in a number of companies, it seems some of you got really active and I very much appreciate it. It seems there was a particularly active person in Abbott. Welcome to all the new readers and a special Welcome to the Abbott employees and a BIG Thank YOU to all of you (and the nice person in Abbott) for all your help!

Last week I mentioned that I will send you a separate mail with a survey during this week. But I didn’t get a chance to work on it and so it will hopefully be sent to you in the coming week. The purpose of this survey is to find out a little more about you and about what you like in the Event Guide and about what needs to get improved. I need your help with it, so please watch out for it on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Please spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

In this week’s Feel Good Slot: I will be at the Breakthrough to Success seminar this weekend, so I will get lots of motivation. If YOU want to reflect a little on life and on what you can achieve, then check this video clip. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DE2U3BMxrwo

______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

ANTARCTICA…ONE PLACE AVAILABLE!
A trip of a lifetime? An adventure? The most exciting thing you have ever done? Be part of it! We, a very friendly mixed group of 8 people, have chartered a 75ft yacht, the Australis, with a skipper to take us from Ushuaia in Argentina down around the Antarctic peninsula for 3 weeks, departing on the 3rd of January.
The yacht berths 9, plus 2 crew (though we’re still expected to take watches) and at the moment we have 8 people paid up and ready to go. So we have one single, precious space available.
Our plan is to spend the first 3 days getting massively sick while crossing the Drake passage, and the next 2.5 weeks seeing the icebergs, whales, penguins and volcanoes on the Antarctic peninsula, and hopefully climb a couple of the more accessible peaks in between (Climbing is not the primary objective of the trip and is entirely optional!). We also plan on spending a week or two at the end of the trip in Patagonia, which I’m told is a rather cool place.
The cost of all this is about EUR 5000-5500 for the yacht charter (depending on exchange rates) plus flights to Argentina (around EUR 800) plus beer and spending money and other incidentals.
So, if you always wanted to do something really exciting in life, contact me: jen.tope@gmail.com . A better description of the amazing holiday is here :
www.ocean-expeditions.com go to Destinations “Antarctica”
——————————————————–

This weekend I will be in the D4 Hotels for the whole 3 days at the Christopher Howard “Breakthrough to Success” seminar. If you have registered in the past and had planned to come, but now have changed your mind. Maybe re-think and drop in on Saturday or Sunday for a bit. If you do, and there are at least 50 people attending that registered through me, the event organiser has agreed to make a donation to the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, but it has to be 50 people at least. :-O I will be helping with the running of the event this time…should be an interesting experience!

If I weren’t doing that I would go to the Septemberfest on Sat or Sun, would go to the “No to NAMA” protest march on Sat and would watch the Liffey Swim on Sat. On Sun I would go to the “Dad’s Day Off” event in Cabinteely Park – just out of curiosity. And in the evening I would go to the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass.

______Competition______________

SEVILLANAS + FLAMENCO CLAPPING – TICKET COMPETITION
I am sure you have heard me mentioning my “Flamenco Friends” before. They were originally “Solo Flamenco” and now have re-grouped and are continuing to provide great Flamenco courses as “Flamenco El Indalo”. In addition to their Flamenco courses they regularly bring well known and talented Flamenco dancers and teachers and musicians to Ireland and run workshops and organise concerts. An upcoming workshop is with Felipe de Algeciras and you can find all the details here flamencoindalo.com/en/events/details/3-flamenco-workshops-with-felipe-de-algeciras. Felipe de Algeciras regularly comes to Ireland to teach but he lives in Algeciras (Cadiz) in Andalucia. When living in London Felipe worked in a few film productions and with his musicians he worked on the soundtrack of “The mask of Zorro” with Antonio Banderas. The footwork you hear throughout the movie is Felipe’s. He also worked on the set of a movie called “Dot the i” with Gael García Bernal.
On Friday 18 Sept two courses will take place in YMCA in Aungier Street. The first one is “Flamenco rhythms & clapping Part I” (19:00-20:00) and the second class on that evening teaches you “Sevillanas” (a popular flamenco-style dance from Sevilla) from 20:00-22:00. Flamenco El Indalo are providing a pair of tickets for each of the classes. To be in with a chance to win, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with CLAPPING as the subject if you want to win the pair of tickets for ” Flamenco rhythms & clapping Part I” and with SEVILLANAS as the subject if you want to win a pair of tickets to the Sevillanas class. In the body of the mail you have to write your name and your mobile phone number and your mail has to be with my by 17:00 on Tues 15 Sept.
For the full list of events on 18+19 Sept and for lots more information – Felipe will also offer a short performance in an intimate setting in Dublin on 19 Sept – visit www.flamencoindalo.com

THE SECRET CASTLE OF MAGIC – TICKET COMPETITION
Castle Dracula & Sillybilly.ie present “The Secret Castle of Magic”. The ‘Secret Castle of Magic’ – a show for older kids and adults – opened its doors in November 2008 and is Ireland’s only Magic venue. There is only one public night per month so you have to book in advance. The Secret Castle features Eamonn Murphy (Winner of ‘Irish Magician of the Year 2009), Nevin Cody (Secretary of the Society of Irish Magicians) and Ronan MacGabhann (Winner of the Gold Star for good spelling – Age 7 ;-) ). Tickets are EUR 12 (EUR 10) and children have to be at least 12 to be allowed in.
The next performance will take place on 25 Sept and Sillybilly.ie have made a pair of tickets available for this show. If you want to be in with a chance to win this pair of tickets, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with MAGIC in the subject and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. IN ADDITION you have to tell me what Sillybilly.ie mainly does. It has to do with kids & Music and you’ll find it here: www.sillybilly.ie/news/42/secret-caslte-of-magic The venue for the show is Castle Dracula in Westwood Club, Clontarf Road, Dublin 3. Your mail has to be with me by 15:00 on Mon 21 Sept.

FITT BOOTCAMP MEMBERSHIP
Cathy Albanese made one free 3 month membership available at each of her FITT Bootcamp locations: at IT Blanchardstown (Monday & Wednesday at 18:00) and at the Corduff Sports Centre (Monday & Thursday at 20:00). www.fittpt.com
All entries made it to me, but unfortunately my instructions for entering the competition were seemingly not very clear, so it will take me until next week to sort out who wanted to win the membership at which of the two locations.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

SMITHFIELD HORSE MARKET
Last week I suggested that you let me know if you get a nice set of pictures from the Smithfield Horse Market so that others can see what is taking place there. Nick Carosello went one step further and took a video of the market. Have a look to get an impression of the surreal nature of this inner-city event. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mbbm9mnjXQ

STUDENT PRICE FOR O2 MOBILE BROADBAND
Are you a student and just back in University? If you want to save some money for your Mobile Broadband service, then check out this Press Release from O2: www.irishpressreleases.ie/index.php?p=5967 EUR 9.99 per month for your Internet connection with a download limit of 10 Gbyte is definitely an attractive offer.

RYANAIR LUGGAGE FEE INCREASE – AGAIN!
Ryanair would like to be known for low prices, but these times are long gone. There was a time when you thought that Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, really knew what his customers want, but he has completely lost touch. The new announcement is that we will now have to pay a EUR 15 (previously EUR 10) charge when we check in a bag on line, or EUR 30 (previously EUR 20) at the airport. You are now allowed to check in a second bag up to a 2nd full 15kg, but it will cost you! A charge of EUR 35 applies to a second bag checked in on line while a second bag checked in at the airport will cost EUR 70. The new charges will come into effect for all new bookings from 01 October. The part that annoys me is the statement: “The company has said that over 70% of its passengers will be unaffected by the changes as they already travel with just one carry on bag which is free of charge.” This is not because people WANT to travel with hand luggage only to their holiday destination. Unless it is a beach-only holiday, you do need SOME clothes etc. on holidays, and it would be great to bring some toiletries as well. Hand luggage is just not enough for that.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4600+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )

NO TO NAMA – PROTEST MARCH
On Sat 12 Sept a protest march against the governments plan of setting up the National Assets Management Agency (NAMA) will take place. NAMA will take over all the bad debt from banks and will in essence transfer the burden of unrecoverable money away from the developers and onto the shoulders of you and me. If you have doubts about these plans – like nearly all economists – you can express your opinion at the ‘No to NAMA’ Street Protest on Saturday 12th September 2009. The protest will start at the Garden of Remembrance (at the top of O’Connell St at Parnell Square) at 14:00 and will continue with a march to the Dail (the Irish Parliament, in case you are not in Ireland too long yet and therefore don’t know that word). This is a non-party event or maybe I should say a “cross-party” event and is organised by Dave Browne who set up www.irishpeopleunion.com. I know that the topic is not the most exciting for many people, but think about it this way: If the critics of the NAMA plan are right, you will have to pay for tens of thousands of Euro (through your taxes) in years to come. And I think risking that amount of money should get everyone to at least TRY to understand what this NAMA thing is about and form an opinion about it. It will DEFINITELY affect you, so you better decide if you are for or against it.
A group of people that are against NAMA have put a facebook group up and you can find out some of their arguments here: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=121614377611

HAPPENSDANCE – An invitation from Animated State
‘Happensdance’ is an initiative from Animated State Dance Theatre Company. On Saturday 12th September DanceHouse will host an interactive dance and sound installation exploring the dialogue between sound, space and movement. Reflecting the way our senses randomly absorb and respond to our environment. Dancers, Sound Engineer and Visitors engage in a creative process that explores the endless possibilities of chance. Choreographer Libby Seward, sound artist Mark Graham and dancers Bridie McMahon, Claire McAneny, Trish Murphy, Jess Rowell work together. There will be 2 x 40 minute presentations of the work on Sat 12 Sept at 14:00+16:00. Simple instructions will ensure that visitors have a clear idea of their interactive role and although it is possible to come and go, seeing the event in its entirety will provide the fullest experience of the concept. Watching and participating is free. The Dance House is in Foley Street.

FRINGE FESTIVAL
The 15th Dublin Fringe Festival will continue until 20 Sept. The 2 weeks are packed with events and while most of them are not free, there are a few free events hidden in the long list of events. If you hear the name “Absolut Fringe Fest” it refers to the main sponsor, which is Absolut Vodka and if you are a Fringe Fest fan you can check the website for all events www.fringefest.com. There is no easy list to find the free events, so you have to trawl through the list of 0-10 Euro events to find the free ones.

MIND THE GAP – FRINGE FESTIVAL
Mind The Gap is a collaborative public art project initiated by Michelle Browne to work with artists, designers, architects and planners to look at open spaces in the city and consider new uses for them. So, it is an event with a lot of subevents. ;-) Let me quote the explanation from the Mind the Gap team: “Over the course of two months the group have explored areas across Dublin city considering how we can re-imagine our civic society. Throughout Absolut Fringe we will present a range of interventions that will inform and delight. The project is based at thisisnotashop on Benburb Street Dublin 7 where you can get information and contribute to our exhibition of ideas for the city.
# 12+19 Sept at 08:00-11:00 Don’t Quote Me – Projected on the outside of the iconic Screen cinema, Mind The Gap looks to the silver screen to investigate Dublin’s current dilemmas. The city, planning, corruption, and the fall of a nation are explored through the history of cinema.
# 07+12 Sept: Fare Play? – Taking off in a taxi from Foster Place, Mind The Gap will offer you a chance to learn about NAMA while visiting the sites of the nation’s current big question. Informed taxi drivers will explain the workings of NAMA and show you where it will all happen. Various times, limited space, booking essential. Email for details.
# 11+18 Sept at 18:30: Operetta – A lone performer looks out over the city and sings a lament to its citizens. Mind The Gap presents a solo operatic performance on
Foster Place of arias that highlight the current plight of the city and its uncertain future.
# 19 Sept at 12:00-15:00: Flower Show – Following from the tradition of competitive window box competitions in the Smithfield area, Mind The Gap offer you the chance to come to Smithfield Plaza and design your own flower box display to be adjudicated
by Lord Ross of Birr Castle, Father to Lord Oxmantown. Take this opportunity to bring plant life to the plaza.
# 20 Sept at 15:00: The Big Freeze – Goethe famously said “architecture is frozen music.” Taking inspiration from the architecture of Smithfield Plaza, a brass band will perform The Ride of The Valkyries by Wagner. This collaborative performance highlights the peaks and troughs of Smithfield Square as a public space.
# Ongoing event/installation:  Public Seating – Mind the Gap will provide alternative public seating in the city for visitors and commuters over the course of
Absolut Fringe. Seating will be provided on Aungier Street, Hawkins Street and other city centre locations
# Ongoing event/installation:  Sunken Site – Hammond Lane – A series of visual proposals will be presented for an unused site on Hammond Lane and Church
Street. A collection of proposals taken from an open call from designers and architects
explore the possibilities of the disused spaces in the city.
# Ongoing event/installation:  Thisisnotashop – The hub of the Mind The Gap operation, the gallery will host an exhibition of ideas for the city. Inspired by the urban myth that Santiago Calatrava designed the James Joyce bridge on the back of a napkin, we invite you, the viewer, to present your ideas for the city of an ever-expanding array of napkins. The gallery will also host The Smithfield Archive presenting the history of the area and unrealised proposals for its regeneration.
A complete list of all events AND some possible surprise events will be listed here: www.Mindthegapdublincity.blogspot.com

Remember growing up in the 80s when Pacman, the A Team and roller skates were cool! The 1980s brought us awesome pop music, great teen movies, and some of the weirdest fashion trends ever to grace the shelves. Big hair, leg warmers and nappy pants on the girls were in the shade compared to the Fluorescent shirts, Miami Vice jackets, acid washed jeans and all-stars sneakers on the guys. DLR Events is getting ready take you back to the decade of mixed tapes, crimped hair and neon spandex for a day of nostalgia for modern world weary dads in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown.

There’ll be plenty of 80s fun and novelty treats to amuse big and small kids alike, including a display of the coolest classic cars and bikes. This fun filled flashback welcomes all of the family, especially Dad. The backing track for the day will be packed full of eighties hits from The Cure, Prince, The Police, Duran Duran, Madonna, AHA, Billy Idol, Tiffany, The Go Go’s, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackon, The Clash, Jesus and the Mary Chain and many more!
Between movies why not try your hand at the Pacman challenge? Play pacman on the big screen and the winner of the challenge will take away a special prize! Bring a picnic and a picnic blanket or buy some food from the catering area and settle in for the day. Have a go on some of the games that will bring you back to your childhood! I am doing the sound engineering for the Gospel Choir and believe me, they are brilliant. About 40 singers and band sing and play very modern songs with a gospel theme (incl. OPEN SOURCE BARCAMP – CALLING ALL IT TECHIES
If you have no idea what “Open Source” means, then this event might not be the right one for you. (“Open Source” describes software that is not developed by commercial companies, but by the a wide community of people that are interested and that often make their time and services available for free to develop the software and distribute it for free.) If you knew all that and can define it a lot better than me, then you should consider going to the next OSSBarcamp. After the success of the March event, on Sat 19 Sept the next OSSBarcamp will take place from 09:30 in DIT Kevin Street.
OSSBarcamp is a free one day technical event focusing on Open Source Software.  There will be three rooms with talks about programming, Linux and Free Software.  There are presentations about CouchDB, Gnome, Drupal, Ubuntu,  Python, Documentation, Perl, Using Free Sofware at home, your work and in your communities. You are allowed to be supported by backup teams as long as they are further away from you, a bit like “phone-a-friend”! ;-) www.citychasedublin.com/

USA ADMISSION CHARGE APPROVED BY SENATE
The current economic climate and the tax increases we all had to suffer mean that we expect to pay less, not more for goods. This works in super markets and in other shops. But it does not at all work with semi-state or state companies and services. There is no chance that the bus fares will drop, stamps will get cheaper, motorway toll will be reduced etc. Instead new and higher charges (e.g. the airport tax) will be introduced. And now the US Government has discovered us as a milk cow where money can be found to finance their own stuff.

Yesterday it was announced that the US Senate has agreed to a $10 admission charge for everybody who wants to enter the US. They call it a tourist fee, but it is an admission charge. Oddly the money will be used to promote tourism! So you take money from the people that are already happy to spend money in your country to promote tourism to the people that don’t pay the tourist fee. Hmmm. The EU is now considering charging people coming from the US the same tourist fee to retaliate. www.miamiherald.com/business/story/1225970.html The whole thing still has to be approved by the House of Representatives, but it is very likely that they will agree. So, more charges and fees! Thank you!!

Make sure that you use the shortening evenings, at the end of the month the clock will be changed again and then the period of darkness will soon follow. So make the most of September!

Have a great weekend,

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
