Hi all!

This will be a more limited Event Guide today! Not because I have better things to do and therefore don’t give you the attention you deserve, instead I am not feeling well at all. I had some tuna last night and it seems that this wasn’t a good idea. So my stomach is not well and therefore writing my usual 12 hours on this Event Guide is not an option. I hope you understand and accept my apologies!

This weekend is St. Patrick’s Day Weekend and there are events from 13-17 March, but if you think there are non-stop events and lots and lots will be done to entertain the masses – including the masses of tourists – then you might be a little disappointed. Now, don’t get me wrong, there ARE lots of events taking place, but it is not a non-stop organised and provided party.

“The Spheres” in the Docklands will take place on Friday and Saturday, it is an outdoor performance on Grand Canal Square near Pearse Street (about 15 min walk from Trinity College). The show is a theatre/dance/circus performance and will take place on Friday 13 March (18:30+20:00) and on Saturday 14 March (18:30+20:00). If you requested tickets, I HOPE you got your activation mail in the beginning of the week! I never got it and will therefore be left without tickets. :-( Not nice! I did get the initial mail, so the mail was not blocked by any Spam-Filter, but the activation mail never made it to me. And without activating and printing the tickets, you have no guarantee that you will be admitted.

The highlight on Saturday was for many years a brilliant fireworks on the Liffey, synchronised to music from the radio, so it was a great spectacle. Unfortunately this event will not take place where the masses of people are, i.e. in Dublin, but will take place in Waterford. :-(

On Tuesday – the actual St. Patrick’s Day – after the parade there was for years the Ceili Mor, an Irish Dancing even in the streets of Dublin (most recently in Earlsfort Terrace) and this gave many people something to do after the parade was over. Unfortunately the Ceili Mor is not taking place this year, which means the only place to go after the parade will for many people be the pub. Not so clever on a day when the level of alcohol consumption is already mad.

So, there ARE some areas for improvement. However, let me focus on the positive sides and events now:

The highlight for me will be the carnival atmosphere at the Big Day Out around Merrion Square on Sunday. From 12:00-18:00 Merrion Square will be buzzing with activities and I would strongly recommend that you have a look for yourself. Many like the Treasure Hunt on Saturday from 10:00-13:00, a Treasure Hunt through the city to discover lots of new and interesting facts about Dublin. I always wanted to take part, but never got ’round to it. Here is the information: www.stpatricksfestival.ie/cms/events_treasurehunt.html

And then there is the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Tuesday, a parade through Dublin (Parnell Square to Christ Church) which is getting better every year. But be warned: If you are not really early at the parade route, you will not see much. The parade starts at 12:00 and goes on for approx. 2 hours.

So, now all there is to do is to PRAY, BEG, HOPE for good weather and it will be a great weekend! :-)

FUNKY SEOMRA – TICKET COMPETITION
Dancing just for the fun of it? No hang-over the day after a great night out? Having fun without alcohol?
“Funky Seomra” is a club/disco event where you can dance to funky world music in an alcohol-free and drug-free atmosphere. David Mooney started Funky Seomra in September 2008 in the Cultivate Centre in Temple Bar and it was immediately so popular that in January he moved the event to the RDS Concert Hall. (The RDS is a big concert and exhibition centre in Ballsbridge.) At the last event there were more than 300 people! Funky Seomra usually takes place on the last weekend of each month, but there will be a special Funky Seomra on the 14 March, for the St. Patrick’s Day Weekend. Funky Seomra made 3 pairs of tickets available for this event on 14 March and while the names are drawn, I still have to notify the winners tomorrow, so I won’t list the names here yet.

RYANAIR CHECK-IN CHANGES
I love and admire Ryanair for what they have done for low price travel. My first trip from Germany to Ireland cost me the Student Tariff of EUR 350 – with Aer Lingus. A flight with Ryanair that I booked recently will cost me EUR 70 to Germany.
But prices is ONE aspect and there is a lot more and because of all the other things I hate Ryanair at the same time with a vengeance. Their dishonesty and slyness is appalling and often I wish there was an alternative.
To keep us on our toes, to reduce their cost (not to reduce the airfares, because I don’t think the special offer prices of EUR 0.01 can be reduced much further!) AND to achieve an effective increase in charges, Ryanair is screwing around with the Airport Check-In concept.
From 01 May, you will have to check in online, unless you want to pay a penalty of EUR 20. I don’t have a problem with that, but at the same time the airline announced that now EVERYBODY will have to pay a check-in charge of EUR 5. Before, you could avoid paying a check-in charge if you didn’t have any luggage and if you checked in online. Again, it is Ryanair’s right to add and increase charges at their will, BUT if everyone has to pay a check-in charge, then it is essentially an increase in airfares and should appear as the price for the airfare during the booking process. From 01 May the bas price for a flight will be EUR 20 new airport levy (not Ryanair’s fault) + EUR 10 check-in charges + EUR 20 luggage charges + EUR 10 credit card fee. On top of these EUR 60 you have airfares and taxes. So if a flight is advertised for EUR 0.01, this effectively means that the price will most likely be in the region of EUR 110 with taxes of up to EUR 25 per sector. EUR 110 is still a good price in comparison to my EUR 350 many years ago, but it is totally dishonest to advertise “free” flights that cost you in the end a lot more.
By the way, if you don’t have access to a printer for your online check-in, you will be in trouble from 01 May!!

CANNONBALL RUN – 24 HOUR FILM COMPETITION
Cannonball Run are seeking students, emerging film makers and anyone who has an idea for a short film project and who are interested in taking part in a challenging and exciting filmmaking event to produce a 3 minute film from start to finish in just 24 hours. The winner will receive EUR 1000 in equipment vouchers sponsored by Filmbase and all completed films as well as a fly-on-the-wall documentary of the event, will be aired on Dublin Community Television.
Crews of up to 5 people will need to be available for interview in the Digital Depot on the evening of 25 March 2009, and selected crews will have to meet at 12:30 on Saturday 28 March 2009 for casting. The 24 hours for completing the films starts at 14:00 on 28 March 2009 and ends at 14:00 on 29 March 2009. Films will be screened in 4 Dame Lane from 20:00 on 29 March 2009, followed by an awards presentation and party.
Cannonball Run are also recruiting a pool of actors to be used as cast members in the short films. If you want to be a cast member, you should be available to meet at the Teachers’ Club at 12:30 on Saturday 28 March 2009 for casting, and be free all day on 28 and 29 March 2009.

DECLAN CLARKE – GOETHE INSTITUT
“Loneliness in West Germany” is the title of an exhibition by Declan Clarke which will be on show in the Goethe Institut (37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2) from 30 Jan-28 March. Admission is free. FAIR WIND WINE – MERCHANT SAILING SHIP IN DUBLIN
On Sat 13 Mar a merchant ship (tall ship) arrives in Dublin on Friday 13 March at Sir John Rogerson Quay. From 10:00-12:00 the boat will be unloaded and it has been more than 60 years since a merchant ship has unloaded its cargo in Dublin outside Dublin Port.. The ship is bringing French wine to Ireland. Watching the unloading is clearly free, but you are as well welcome to come on board and visit the boat or taste the wine on Friday 13 Mar from 12:00.16:00 and Sat 14 Mar all day. ST. PATRICKS DAY WEEKEND IN DUNDRUM
The Dundrum Town Centre is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day weekend from Sat 14 Mar until Tues 17 Mar. Traditional Irish music and Miss Ali’s Entertainment dance school will be showcased on the mall on the hour between 13:00 and 17:00 from Sat 14 Mar – Mon 16 Mar. DANTE AND THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS – PUBLIC LECTURES
A series of six public lectures, supported by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, will take place at University College Dublin from 02 Feb – 23 Mar. Lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride are the seven deadly sins that were deeply rooted in Dante’s spiritual and cultural makeup and affected the conception and composition of his Commedia. Five scholars of Italian language and Literature and one historian will speak about violence and deviancy in the late thirteen century, Giambattista Vico’s philosophy and Leon Battista Alberti’s architecture…

ST PATRICK’S DAY
Today is now finally St. Patrick’s Day, but the day is a little bit of an anti-climax, there is not THAT much happening once the Parade is over. For all car drivers: If you want to come to the City Centre with your car, expect chaos. There will be lots of streets blocked for the parade, but if you stay a little further out, then you will be glad to hear that today Pay&Display parking is not enforced. This means that you won’t get clamped if you park in a street with Pay&Display parking. But no parking in Bus Lanes or on car park spaces for handicapped people, please!
* The Parade will start at 12:00 at Parnell Square North and will go on at least until 14:00. 400,000 people are expected in the City Centre, so if you don’t arrive VERY early, you will not see anything of the parade! An interesting calculation: The whole parade route is (my estimate) only 2.5km long with 400,000 people along it. This means that per metre of the parade route 160 (!!!!) people will have to stand! With two sides of the street being available in most places, this means that 80 people will share with you one single metre of street! Total madness! :-)

BLAZE AWAY – LECTURES IN NATIONAL MUSEUM
A new lecture series, entitled “Blaze Away – A History of Duelling in Ireland” started on 03 Feb at the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History in Collins Barracks, Dublin 7. The lectures will examine the history of creating and using pistols and swords in Ireland before mass manufacturing as well as the evolution of small arms technology in the twentieth century.

During a two-hour session in Dalkey Quarry (South of Dun Laoghaire) you will learn to use climbing gear, tie knots, belay and try climbing techniques as well as being given information about an upcoming two-day Rock Climbing Courses and Scrambling Courses. FIANNA FAIL FULL OF ENERGY
Have you seen the hilarious video clip of the Fianna Fail Ard Fheis (Party Conference) from the beginning of the month? I don’t know who came up with the daft idea to herd these guys around the reporter David Davin-Power, but whoever staged this should be fired. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3elLmrCmOqo On the other hand, there is the possibility that the people around the reporter were a representative cross-sample of the attendants. But in that case, I seriously worry about this country. “Rabbits in head-light” comes to mind!
(By the way, this is no criticism directed at a specific party! I am only talking about the silly staging of this interview.
