———————————————————————
Hi all!
Last week I invited people who used their creativity and initiative and started businesses recently to send me a mail and offered to help them to spread the word. I did get a number of mails and they are interesting enterprises! I will collect more and in two weeks I plan to include them in the Dublin News section. So, if you have recently started your business and need a bit of help to spread the word, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “Opportunity” in the Subject and you will be added to the list.
After last week’s Event Guide was sent I got many mails and one thing that was repeatedly said was that you appreciate how I am usually send a positive message instead of doom&gloom with the Event Guide. I am glad that my intention is received well by most and understood. Surprisingly, however, I got ONE mail that criticised my permanent negativity :-O :-O and I found it very interesting how the same words can be interpreted soooo differently. Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance yet to reply to the critical mail, but I will do so in the next few days and this week I will include TWO messages again, just to confuse! ;-) Pick the one you prefer for yourself!
During the week I read that Dr. Cliff Arnall, a health psychologist at Cardiff University, devised a formula to work out the worst day of the year and he concluded that this year the 21 January will be the most depressing day of the year. He considers weather, debts after Christmas, the time since Christmas, the period of time before you abandon New Year’s resolutions, the dates when motivation levels seems to be at their lowest and the timing for the need for action to escape the blues. So make sure that you start the day with a big smile on Wednesday! …and then continue it that way! Do two or three Random Acts of Kindness on the 21st because spreading warmth and love and care, does make you automatically feel better as well!
And if you are still not feeling your best on that day, then watch this video that was sent to me by Billy W. It is a video of Nick Vujicic, a 27 year old Australian guy who was born with no arms and no legs. Nick’s father was a pastor and he became a preacher and a brilliant motivational speaker. So, if you need a bit of motivation for the new week or maybe on 21 Jan, then watch this video:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=MslbhDZoniY (The website mentioned on the video has nothing to do with Nick Vujicic. His website is www.lifewithoutlimbs.org )

Hey, did you see the number of subscribers in the header???? We broke through the 3000 barrier!! Hurray! Thanks to every single one of you who helped spreading the word about this Event Guide. Keep telling your friends and especially your colleagues. Remember, the goal is 5000 by October. ;-) This week we can welcome a good few people from www.mindshareworld.com! Hi guys! :-)
In my effort to improve the look&feel of the Event Guide gradually, I am experimenting with different headlines this week (graphics instead of text). Let me know what you think about it! (Only people that get the HTML version of the newsletter by e-mail see this new change, but this is the vast majority anyway.)

A huge Thanks to the new sponsors this week: Saundra S, Meisoon N, Ruth F and Valerie McN. Every donation is hugely appreciated! ;-)
And please read this: This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E, Cliodhna D, Brian L, Padraig S, Kathie S, Orla niF, Jef B, Susanna N., Kate C, Nicola J, Claus Sch, Gordon S, Jeanne M, Fiona O’C, Marta M, Angela C, Isabelle F, Sundra S, Meisoon N, Ruth F, Valerie McN and www.stickyfingerstravel.com, the travel guide for parents travelling with their children. The main sponsor is www.kravmagaireland.com, the self-defence training centre for everyone, which provides 12-week or 2-day self-defence training courses for beginners.
I am grateful for all support, the sponsoring is picking up, but YOUR support is NEEDED too! Going to free events saves you a LOT of money. True? ;-) Knowing about these free events is essential so that you then can decide if you want to go or not. True? This is at least worth 1 Euro per month, which is just 25 cent per newsletter!? Do you agree? Can I count on your 12 Euro per year? Feel free to give more if you can, but please do consider the 12 Euro.
To contribute go to “http ://url . ie/v6z” and just remove the three Spaces in the web address (I have to write it like this, otherwise Spam Checkers complain about the url .ie address.) you then can donate using PayPal or your credit card!
Alternatively you can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation. This Event Guide is a hobby project and NOT a commercial enterprise, so I do need donations!
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Plans______________
Quite a number of readers asked me to provide a digested version of the week’s events from the long list of events in this newsletter. It is quite challenging to pick and choose, so to make it a little easier for me, I am describing in this section what _I_ intend to do in the coming week and maybe that helps you. All events mentioned here are described in further detail further down.
On Saturday I will definitely go to The Ratzingers gig in the Mint Bar in the evening. Since the forecast is for rain, I might use the opportunity to visit the National Museum in Kildare Street, because I haven’t been there for a long long time.
On Sunday the Recharge Festival in Dun Laoghaire (just to see what they are doing, it is mainly aimed at children) and the Concert of New Mexican Music in the National Gallery sound interesting. In the evening I will be at my weekly Gardiner Street Gospel Choir mass.
During the week the events that interest me are the Charles Darwin and the Moon Landings lectures on Monday and the “China and the Financial Crisis” and the American Presidency lecture on Wednesday, but I will miss both, because I will train Krav Maga on both days. (By the way, there will be a new 2-day course for beginners at the end of this month on 31 Jan+01 Feb. If you are interested, ring Patrick Cumiskey on 087-2390398 to book, or check www.kravmagaireland.com. When you ring Patrick, tell him that you heard about it in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)!)
On Thursday I will definitely go to the Lightwave launch event in the Science Gallery and the next weekend I will spend in Germany.

______Competition______________
PETER MCVERRY TRUST FUNDRAISER – TICKET COMPETITION
The Peter McVerry Trust supports young homeless people to break the cycle of homelessness and move towards independent living through the provision of a continuum of care services including detox centres and training courses. Declan Crawford, who works with homeless people in a Detox Centre, is organising a fundraising event for the Peter McVerry Trust to raise much needed funds. And for this event, Declan has made a pair of tickets available for a competition in the Dublin Event Guide. The event takes place on Wed 21 Jan in the Button Factory in Temple bar. (Doors open at 19:30) Entertainment and performances are provided by Comedians Eric Lalor (www.myspace.com/ericlalor) and Willie White and music from Christy Dignam and Joe Joel from Aslan and also “Remedy-ed” (www.myspace.com/remedied) and the main act is “Slam” an entertaining band that do music from the 60s right up to today. Tickets are EUR 20 and to find out about how to get tickets call 01-8230776 or Declan on 086-2003414.
If you want to win the pair of tickets, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject “McVerry” (please don’t include the ” “) and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. The mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Monday 19 Jan.

ELVIS PRESLEY CHARITY SPECTACULAR – TICKET COMPETITION
The pair of tickets for the “Elvis Birthday Charity Spectacular” at the Red Cow Inn, kindly provided by John Kavanagh and the Elvis Presley Social Club were won by Melanie Kovero and Valerie McNulty. The next big Elvis Social Club Event will take place at the May bank holiday weekend and I have heard rumours ;-) that some high-profile guests from the USA, people that worked with Elvis Presley, will come to this event. I will keep you posted and with a bit of luck I will get some free tickets again for the next event!
All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________
RHODES D7 CLOSED FOR RENOVATION
When celebrity chef Garry Rhodes opened his restaurant Rhodes D7 on Capel Street in July 2007 the world was a different one than it is today. Despite the location, the restaurant was aimed at the upper mid-market, meaning that it was aimed at “normal people” with a good bit of money to spend (Main course between EUR 16.50 and 25.90). The change of the economic climate took its toll even from Rhodes D7: Instead of opening the 250-seater restaurant on 06 Jan, it was decided to remain closed until 17 March and to change the restaurant significantly in the meantime. The 250-seater will be turned into a 100-seat brasserie with wine bar. Oh and allegedly another change is planned: The food will be cheaper! …and that can’t be a bad thing!

IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE FUNDING WITHDRAWN
In a surprise decision, the Arts Council of Ireland has decided to terminate with immediate effect ALL funding to the Irish Writers’ Centre. Cuts are required everywhere, but a complete termination of any funding is a very drastic step. The Centre is the only centre in Dublin devoted to literary and in recent months the Writers’ Centre have provided many free readings and have made tickets available for you all in the context of competitions here in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). If you are interested in literature, please read the press release here writerscentre.ie/press.html. You can sign an online petition by clicking on the link on this page and you can find out all about a fundraising night on the 22 Jan here www.writerscentre.ie/centre/events/other/barry.html

BOYCOTT ISRAEL DAY – PROTEST

www.indymedia.ie/article/90548
I agree with the protests against Israel’s military aggression against Gaza and against the killing of innocent civilians in Gaza, but I am not too sure that the boycott of Israelian products on one day will be effective in the slightest. To be effective it would at least have to be a “Boycott Israel Month” or something.

FRENCH FOR TODDLERS – ALLIANCE FRANCAISE
“A petits pas” is the name of this “event” and it is especially for francophile mothers (and fathers) with toddlers. The Alliance Francaise (1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2) describes the programme in this way: “Starting from February the Alliance Francaise French language immersion programme for toddlers 1-5 year old will deepen the parent-child bond through French. “People who learn a second language at a younger age are more likely to have more advanced grey matter than those who learn later” say researchers from University College London. At Alliance Française, we strongly believe this and now offer an innovative programme one toddler-one adult to enrich your child’s intellectual development and ability to be open-minded to other languages and cultures. Open days are on Monday 19 Jan and Monday 26 Jan from 10:00-12:00. For more information, contact: primary@alliance-francaise.ie or (01) 438 14 49.

Almost all women dressed in black, including a type of chador covering their heads, in summer as well as winter. Women were victims of the laws of men, slaves of a father-master. And the “delitto d’onore” (crime of passion) was so common that a special law existed to decriminalise it. FREE ART FRIDAY
Free Art Friday is a relatively new art movement that’s rapidly gaining popularity around the World. Artists create a painting, sketch, sculpture or installation and leave it on the street. The piece can then be picked up by anyone and the finder can claim it as their own. Finders are encouraged to email the artist and tell them how and where they found it. The Free Art Friday movement are now asking all painters, photographers, illustrators, sculptures, graffiti artists, taggers, cartoonists or any visual artist to contribute a small piece of work that will be hung/placed/or left on the streets of Dublin on Friday 23 Jan for anyone to take away. Work submitted should be no bigger than 60x60cm (24 in) and must have an official Free Art Friday label affixed to the back (available to download from the Free Art Friday website) and be dropped off at All City Records, Crow Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 by Mon 19 Jan 2009.

TWINNING OF TALLAGHT AND GAZA
Looney is the name, Dermot Looney, and it seems to be the motto as well! The 26 year old Labour candidate for Tallaght, Dermot Looney, called for the twinning (i.e. “making a twin town”) of Tallaght and Gaza in order to help the people in Gaza against the Israelian attack. Looney says such a gesture is “not just of symbolic solidarity, but of material and infrastructural support from the people of Tallaght and South Dublin Council in the time ahead”. Supporting the people in Gaza is a good thing, there is no doubt, but could it be that his suggestion of “this would be a real and lasting message of hope for Palestinians from the people of Tallaght” is just a tiny bit too ambitious? www.labour.ie/dermotlooney/news/123125569240683.html
…and another one…
GARDAÍ DRIVING PATROL CARS WITHOUT QUALIFICATION
Have you ever been standing at the side of a busy street, maybe even at night, when a police car (marked or unmarked) has raced by in break-neck speed where you only can hope and pray that the garda driver is VERY good because otherwise he is risking a LOT of people’s life? I experience that regularly and I sometimes wonder if the huge risk is fully justified by the reason for the high-speed race. I still hope that it ALWAYS is. Even in cases – I have witnessed that – when a police car races around a corner, crossing red traffic lights…just to switch off sirens and emergency light immediately after crossing the junction. :-O
This week at least one issue came up about this: The Oireachtas Justice Committee was told by Kathleen O’Toole, the chief of the Garda Inspectorate, that around 2,600 gardaí are driving patrol cars without the necessary qualifications. Inspector O’Toole said these gardaí were operating on so-called “chief’s permission” without having undergone a driving course. She says this policy is putting both the officers themselves and the lives of the public at risk. – Worrying!

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it. If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, let me know by e-mail and I will make sure that you will be taken off the list for as long as you want. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby. However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) and if you want to help me with the running of it (no minimum amount!) just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the word “Donation” in the subject and I will reply with a link that will allow you to make your donation by PayPal or per credit card or follow the link just above this section.
