Hi all!

I am just back from a Science Week lecture about “Space Tourism” with the Commercial Director of Virgin Galactic, Stephen Attenborough, and yesterday I was at a lecture about the “Personal Side of Robots” by Cynthia Breazeal. Sooooo interesting! If you didn’t make it and missed out this year, make sure that you look out for “Science Week” next year!! The people from the Discovery Science & Engineering programme put together a brilliant set of events and already seem to have exciting ideas for next year. In about a week or so, some of the lectures will be available online on their website www.scienceweek.ie. I will tell you about it again, but make sure you have a look.

I find it quite interesting how at the moment the much-too-early-forced-upon-us Christmas mood is mixed with the continual and never-ending bad news about the economy and the bleak Christmas. Seems hugely counterproductive! Today I heard on that people in Ireland will spend 5% less this Christmas, but despite that, the spend is still by FAR the highest of ALL surveyed countries (13 in Europe)!? The Deloitte survey shows that people in Ireland will spend more than 3 times as much as people in Germany! UK is Number 2 (not that surprising), but surprisingly Spain is Number 3. The Small&Medium Enterprise Organisation ISME is trying to convince us to buy Irish goods to save Irish jobs (www.isme.ie/press-page43023.html#Friday%207th%20November%202008), but should we suddenly stop comparing prices and shop around? Weren’t we advised some time ago to do that? ;-)  Some interesting information on international shopping in the “Dublin News” section….

Are you still making a difference in your world by doing/saying unexpected nice things to people you come across/have dealings with? :-) After I suggested that last week I got LOTS of really nice mails! Thanks to all who did make the effort to send me a nice mail! I will try to reply to all, but it will take a little longer. The best present to friends, colleagues, bus drivers, shop assistants, waiters, flatmates ad family is to make them smile. Continue with the campaign of doing random nice things! It is fun! :-)

KINOPOLIS – POLISH CINEMA FESTIVAL – TICKET COMPETITION
From 21-23 November 2008 the Festival of Polish Cinema is taking place in Dublin. KINOPOLIS is a project organised by the Pomeranian Film Foundation and the Polish Embassy in Dublin. This year a further co-operation partner is the Dublin Cinema Group. The Festival comprises of a 3-day exposition of Polish feature films and animated films as well as Polish silent cinema accompanied by live jazz music. The festival guests will lend weight to the whole event: The outstanding Polish film and theatre actor Zbigniew Zamachowski as well as Marek Skrobecki, co-creator of Peter and the Wolf – an animated film awarded an Oscar in 2007, will be in Dublin.

IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE EVENTS – TICKET COMPETITION
The Irish Writers Centre (19 Parnell Square, Dublin 1) is making more tickets available!
On 18 November John Boyne, who wrote “The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas”, which is the basis for the current movie by the same title, will read and discuss his work as part of the Writers Centre “Hourglass Readings”. The response to this competition was HUGE and I am sooo glad that the draw for all competitions is a completely random draw and that I do not have to choose the winner. Hopefully none of you stood in front of the door and had to turn around disappointed.

Rumour has it that the actress Kelly Brook will be in Dublin today (Friday) to unveil Brown Thomas’ Christmas window display. And on Saturday Tiffany, Cartier and Theo Fennell will open their first Irish shop in Brown Thomas’ new “Fine Jewellery Hall”. Just in time for buying your Christmas presents there! ;-)

SHOPPING IN NEW YORK – FROM DUBLIN
Ok, this is not really Dublin News and the headline is a little sensational ;-) , but hopefully it got your attention, because the information is VERY interesting. If you ever bought Christmas presents or other goods in the USA (maybe clothes or computer hardware?) or from any other non-EU country and got them sent to you in Ireland then you had to live with the risk of being “caught” by customs if your goods were more expensive than EUR 22. Having to pay customs duty AND VAT sometimes voided the savings completely. And to add insult to injury, oddly and unfairly all these dutys were calculated not just based on the price of the goods but based on the price+postage! The limit of EUR 22 was in place since 1991 and had never been changed. …unless now!!
The EU has now raised the limit significantly and from the 01 Dec you are allowed to import goods up to a value of EUR 150 completely tax and VAT free. This makes a BIG difference especially with the current attractive Dollar exchange rate and you should keep it in mind for your Christmas and post-Christmas shopping.
The confirmation of this is in this legal (Warning! :-) ) and boring document: eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2008:085:0001:0002:EN:PDF and I do think that this will automatically apply in Ireland without any further steps (e.g. change of Irish laws). However I didn’t get a chance to check with the Revenue Office yet, but will try to do that during the week and will let you know next week.

Last week I listed my own plans the first time because some of you asked me to help you pre-selecting good events. Obviously ALL events listed here are good! :-) …and I don’t want to discriminate against any events, BUT it is impossible to do everything and if you think my own plans are helpful for you to choose things to do, then read on:
This weekend I recommend a visit to the National Museum (Collins Baracks), then the 1968 event from the Goethe Institute and in the evening the live transmission of Madama Butterfly. I will go the Ratzingers Gig later on Saturday evening (and to a birthday celebration as well ;-) ). On Sunday I will first go to the International Charity Bazaar and then will be in the Docklands in the chq Building for the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir gig at the Docklands Christmas Lighting.

WINTER SALON & AUCTION – TEMPLE BAR GALLERY

NGG (NO GRANTS GALLERY) OPENS
NGG (No Grants Gallery) opens in Temple Bar on Wed 19 Nov. The Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) will launch this new gallery and exhibition space for artists who are currently working without public funding support. NGG will be officially opened by the Director of The Arts Council, Mary Cloake, in the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar which will be home to this new Gallery. This new gallery will be curated and managed by Dublin artist Carol Eakins and the system is very simple – artists will pay a nominal fifty euro fee for a two-week exhibition slot and also receive promotional support from TBCT.

AISLING CONROY – NGG
The first exhibition at NGG (No Grants Gallery) in 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar will be by Aisling Conroy, who is a student at NCAD. Her exhibition will run until November 24th. Artists interested in showing their work at NGG should contact ngg@templebar.ie or Carol Eakins at 01 677 2255.

NANO EXHIBITION
The “Nano Exhibition: How technology is opening a new dimension” is provided by the Cultural and Scientific Service of the French Embassy in Ireland and is provided in the context with the Science Week from 10-14 Nov 2008 at the European Union House in 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2. So you have only today left to visit this exhibition, but unfort I only found out during the week.
The Nano Exhibition takes a broad overview over nanotechnologies – the science, the technology, the applications and the safety issues. Through film, text and images the exhibition takes you into a world where size matters and it gives you an idea of how nanotechnology influences everyday life.
Leading French scientists are behind this travelling exhibition, which is in both French and English and open to everybody. Opening times are Mon-Fri: 09:30-17:00.

While I am writing this all the Polish speakers that I know are fast asleep and since my Polish skills are non-existent, I have to guess:
This talk was announced a few weeks ago and it sounds HUGELY interesting. However, I know read on the website for the talk “UWAGA: Spotkanie z Markiem Kami?skim w innym terminie”. I am not sure what that means, but I am guessing that it means that this talk has been postponed. In autumn a number of Polish “va banque talks” will take place in Dublin. They are meetings with influential modern Polish directors, writers, musicians etc. The events are organised with the support of the Consular Section of the Polish Embassy and thanks to Agnieszka and Niamh I found out about them.
The next meeting will be on 14 Nov at 19:00 with Marek Kaminski, Polish explorer. Kaminski is the first man who reached both, North and South Poles in the same year 1995 without external support. In 2004, he completed the same trip with a 17 year old, disabled boy Jasiek Mela. He is the President of the Polish Branch of the Explorer Club. He studied philosophy and physics at Warsaw University. He speaks English, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Japanese. Additionally he established a foundation in 1996 to support the exploration of the polar world and other places all over the world. They also encourage people to find out more about ecology and the Polar regions in addition the foundation tries to help young Explorers.

The talk/meeting is taking place Banker’s Club (IBOA House), Stephen Street Upper, Dublin 8. THE SCIENCE SHOW – SCIENCE WEEK
The Science Show (for secondary school students) is designed to inspire students to choose physics for the Leaving Certificate. Safe household items are used to demonstrate various physics principles such as pressure, flight, density, waves, sound, light and electromagnetism. This show includes multimedia presentation, experimental demonstrations and group participation. It takes place on Sat 15 Nov from 11:00-12:00 in the Central Library, Ilac Centre, Henry Street.

ASIAN ART – NATIONAL MUSEUM
‘A Dubliner’s Collection of Asian Art: The Albert  Bender Exhibition’ is the title of a new exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland (Decorative Arts and History) in Collins Barracks, Benburb Street, Dublin 7. The exhibition opens on Thurs 13 Nov 2008 and admission is free.
Albert M. Bender (1866-1941) was born in Dublin and later emigrated to San Francisco, he was one of the most successful insurance brokers on the west coast of the USA and was hugely interested in Asian art. In honour of his mother, Augusta Bender, he donated some 260 artefacts of mostly Chinese, Japanese and Tibetan origin to the National Museum of Ireland between 1931 and 1936. I will try to visit the exhibition in coming weeks and am keen to visit the National Museum in Collins Barracks anyway. I have been in many museums in Dublin, but never in the National Museum in Collins Barracks.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS FESTIVAL – DUN LAOGHAIRE
The Christmas Lights Festival in Dun Laoghaire will take place from 16:00-18:00 on 15 Nov in from the People’s Park to Harbour Plaza.
The traditional Tree Lighting Ceremony in Dun Laoghaire will be a fusion of colour and vitality filled with community spirit for the vibrant Parade culminating in a magnificent fireworks display. The Parade assembles in The Peoples Park at 16:00 and sets off at 16:30 to make its way along Upper and Lower Georges St to the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Plaza where Carol singers from The Dominican Secondary School will entertain.
The parade will be led by the Cathaoirleach and giant costumed characters and entertainers including a Samba band. The Parade also features many local groups and Santa himself will be taking time out of his busy schedule to make a special appearance. The procession through the streets will feature Gardai, Local schools, Lions Club, Vintage Cars, Library Road Play Centre, Harbour Police, Soccer Club, performing Irish Dancers, Fire Brigade, Patrick St. Cubs, Santa House, members of the Polish Community and local voluntary groups.
The Parade ends at Dun Laoghaire Harbour Plaza at 17:30 and then the Cathaoirleach will switch on the Christmas Lights on the Magnificent Christmas Tree, which will in turn illuminate all the lights in the Town & Harbour as fireworks light up the sky to officially announce the beginning of Christmas in Dun Laoghaire.

JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL
Rie M. sent me all information about the Japanese Film Festival. Thanks! It is taking place from 15-27 Nov in Dublin, Cork and Limerick. The Dublin “leg” of the Festival will be on Sat 15 + Sun 16 Nov in CineWorld in Parnell Street.
The Film Festival is co-organised by the Embassy of Japan, access>CINEMA and the Ireland Japan Association (IJA) and further information is available from Jenny O’Connor (cultural@embjp.ie) in the Japanese Embassy.
All film screenings are free, which is definitely a unique feature of the Japanese Film Festival. Tickets are required and will be available from the Japanese Film Festival 2008 stand at the venue 3 hours before each screening. All films are unclassified and are therefore open to 18+ yrs old only. All films featured are in Japanese with English subtitles.

1968 EXHIBITION, SCREENINGS & DISCUSSION – GOETHE-INSTITUT
‘If you could change the world at last’ is an exhibition and series of film screenings and discussions in the Goethe Institut (37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2). The social revolt of 1968 was an international phenomenon that occurred simultaneously in just about every country in the world and, as it evolved, became increasingly interlinked internationally. Visual artists Anne Angyal (US), Declan Clarke (Ireland), Heidrun Holzfeind (Austria), Almut Linde (Germany), Seamus Nolan (Ireland) and Si Schroeder (Ireland) present work in which they mirror the events of the 1968 movement and reflect on its consequences with regards to the cultural and social developments and intellectual changes in their countries. The exhibition runs from 15-19 November 2008 at the Goethe-Institut (Opening Hours: Tues-Thurs 10:00-20:00 and Fri-Sat 10:00-13:30 ) and Seamus Nolan’s work will be shown in the Project Arts Centre on East Essex Street, Dublin 2.
The opening event on 15 November 2008 will feature a screening of ‘The Artists in the Ring: Perplexed’ (Alexander Kluge, 1968) at 16:00 followed by a roundtable discussion with the artists, chaired by Willie White, Artistic Director, Project Arts Centre at 18:00 and an opening party 20:00.
A series of films by German filmmaker Alexander Kluge with his central topics of protest, self-determination and emancipation will be screened in the Goethe-Institut in November and December as part of the project. All screenings (with English subtitles) take place in the Goethe Institut and start at 18:00:

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS – DOCKLANDS
Yesterday Grafton Street switched on the lights, last Sunday the big artificial steel tree in O’Connell Street was switched on and this week it is the turn of the Dublin Docklands. To start the festive season in style, the lighting of the Docklands Christmas tree complete with 2,000 LED lights, at the chq building in the heart of the IFSC will be carried out by Councillor Eibhlin Byrne, Lord Mayor of Dublin on Sunday 16th November at 17:00. The lighting ceremony will be accompanied by the brilliant Gardiner Street Gospel Choir which will sing there between 15:00-18:00. You HAVE to come and say HI to me. I will definitely be there and you will find me at or near the sound desk. However, even better than meeting me is hearing the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir. :-)
By the way, the Docklands are bringing back the Christmas Market, called ’12 Days of Christmas’ Festival, which will take place this year from Fri 12 Dec to Tues 23 Dec where over 80 market traders will be selling a range of Christmas gifts and seasonal food. I will write a bit more about the upcoming Christmas Markets next week.

The fifth and last screening in this series will be a screening of two films:
“Mulo” – Dir: Almorek Marsha, Israel 2007, 30 min.
38-year-old wife and mother, Mulo, is an Ethiopian emigrant. When Mulo becomes pregnant, she stands as a punching bag between her eldest daughter, a student of economics and part of a new generation that integrates within Israeli society, who porposes that she should have an abortion, and on the other, her husband, the dominant figure in the family, who advocates that she should have the baby.
“Yolki Polki” – Dir: Alex Gentelev, Israel 2008, 92 min.
In “Yolki Polki”, the last great wave of Russian immigration is unfolded through the stories of Russian immigrants scattererd across Israel. Director Alexander Genetelev’s personal journey confronts what it is to be Israeli and asks what chances do a million people have of receiving the stamp of “Israeliness” – a question that has accompanied the director since his arrival in Israel in the early 1990s.
Ziv Naveh, Director of the Gesher Multicultural Fund, will participate in a discussion following these films.

IMA LECTURE: PHILIPPE DE MONTEBELLO, DIRECTOR MET, NY
The 2008 Irish Museums Association (IMA) Annual Lecture will be given by Philippe de Montebello, Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, on the theme ‘What makes a great museum great’. The lecture takes place on Thurs 20 Nov from 18:30 in the National Gallery of Ireland, Merrion Square West, Dublin 2 – Lecture Theatre. ANDREA PALLADIO CELEBRATED
To celebrate the Fifth Centenary of the birth of Andrea Palladio (1508-1580), Dr Concetto La Malfa will give a talk on the life and achievements of the famous Italian architect and on the influence he had for centuries on world architecture.
The talk will be followed by the showing of a short documentary compiled by Dr La Malfa himself on the architectural projects which made PaLLADIO famous.

Isn’t it odd, that around 1848 thousands of Irish people fled from the famine in Ireland to the USA and were happily accepted and integrated. And that currently the Irish government is trying to talk the US government into giving ILLEGAL, visa-less, non-registered and non-tax paying Irish people in the USA permanent residency without any legal consequences for their years of illegality. But that on the other hand visa-owning, tax-paying and legally in Ireland resident US citizens are forced mercilessly to leave Ireland once their visa has expired and are not allowed to apply for an extension while in Ireland, but only when they are back in the USA?
Long live the principle: Everybody is equal, but some are just more equal than others! Two people I know have been affected by this. One is a reader and supporter of this Event Guide who will have to leave next week, not knowing if and when he is allowed to return. The other “victim” of this was forced out of Ireland for more than 3 months during which her hugely supportive employer kept her job for her and – because she had lived in company accommodation – still paid her apartment!!
If the rules and laws say that visa-holders with expired visas need to leave the country and only can apply again from their home country and then do not have a guarantee that they will get a visa, then I would think the same, PLUS repercussions for their illegality, should apply to all illegal Irish in the USA.
