———————————————————————

Hi all!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! What a week for this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and more importantly: What a week for the Dublin Event Guide Community to which you all belong. :-) Last week I asked if you could spread the word and let your friends and colleagues know about this Event Guide and see what happened!?!?! All together we reached a BIG milestone: We are now more than 2000 Dublin Event Guide Community Members!! Thanks to all of you who helped achieving that! I know a lot of you forwarded mails to friends and THANKS to each and everyone of you! Many helped whose names I don’t know, but some names I picked up and let me mention them as representatives ;-): Niamh, Estelle, Pamela Sean, Elly and Marie have to be mentioned (since I didn’t clear it with all of you, I will just mention the first names, I hope that’s ok) and many more should be listed here.
Some of you might wonder why I am so much trying to increase the number of subscribers further. The reasons are simple: 1) For me it is exactly the same amount of work if I write this newsletter for 3 or for 3000 people, but it feels better to know that there are a good few people who make use of my weekly compilation. ;-) 2) The more we are, the more relevant we become to organisers. This will result in more information being provided to me about events so that I can keep you informed easier and MAYBE it will even result in some more free events being provided. So, keep telling your friends, colleagues and families!! To subscribe they only have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com.

A special welcome to all ESB employees who joined us! A hugely supportive Dublin Event Guide Community Member convinced the relevant people in ESB to include last week’s edition in an internal ESB newsletter (Great idea!!) and more than 50 ESB employees joined us! Great to have you with us! :-)
For everybody else: If you work for a company that has an internal newsletter or that has a Sports&Social Club who informs their members about great events, please talk to them and maybe we can add more companies to the group of subscribers.
After all, this is the most environment-friendly Event Guide in Dublin :-P and the only Event Guide that focuses totally on free events!

Speaking of cost: I had an interesting experience in a restaurant this week! A good friend of mine invited me to lunch a few days ago and we went to a little, but very popular restaurant not too far from Baggot Street. The food is always good and it is a nice place (a bit overcrowded in the meantime, but that is the price you pay if you go to a popular place). However, what shocked me is another price: I had a type of salad with chicken pieces in it and I had that yummy salad a few times before. I think the first time I was there was about 2.5 years ago and at that time the price for the salad was 12.95. Yesterday the price was 19.95!!!! 7 Euro in 2.5 years? :-O That is an inflation rate of nearly 25% per year?? There is definitely something wrong in this country! And you wonder about recession? The restaurant was PACKED! But I will happily avoid going to that restaurant in the future!!!

The good news is that this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) does not cost you a cent and will always tell you about all the free events that are taking place in Dublin. So, recession or no recession, I will try to help you save money. ;-)

Please note: This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E., Cliodhna D., Brian L., Padraig S., Kathie S., Orla niF and Jef B. Thanks for the support, guys! If you too want to provide some financial help and want to see your name in this list ;-) , please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “Donation” in the subject and I will reply to you with a link to a PayPal website where you can donate via PayPal or Credit Card. Alternatively you can contact me to arrange another route for your donation. This Event Guide is a hobby project and NOT a commercial enterprise, so I do rely on donations. Oh …and there is NO minimum amount for contributions! ;-)

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free. I try to find confirmation in all cases, however, there are occasionally events that did appear to be free while writing this newsletter but later it turns out that some admission is charged. Apologies in that case! All information about events is checked as much as possible, however since I mostly relay information from other people or from websites etc, errors can happen and no guarantee for correctness can be given. (What a nuisance to have to add disclaimers like that!)

______Competition______________

SOPHIE’S CHOICE – COMPETITION
Simon Andreucetti is organising a big fundraising event on Sat 20 Sept and has gathered some great bands and musicians to help with the fundraising. The funds (target is EUR 40,000) for Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin. The event is called “Sophie’s Choice” and the story behind this name is better told by Simon himself:
“My daughter Sophie was born with a life threatening condition called Hypopituitarism. This means that her pituitary gland is under developed. When this occurs, the body is unable to produce the hormones necessary in everyday life. Without hormones, you cannot laugh, cry, feel, smell, or engage in any of the normal emotions that we take for granted every day. With medication, these hormones can be replaced to a certain degree, but for example, if Sophie picks up a slight cold it can cause major problems as her brain does not know to send the necessary hormone increase to combat it. The condition also affects the optic nerve meaning that 60% of children born with the condition are born blind. Sophie’s right eye has been affected but luckily she still has full vision in her left eye. To read the full story about Sophie, please click through to www.myspace.com/sophieschoiceevents. The reason for this Sophie’s Choice fundraising event been set up is down to one little poster I found myself reading in the early hours on a Sunday morning in the halls of the childrens hospital in Crumlin. On the poster there were just two short sentences: ‘Please donate any spare crayons to the hospital. There isn’t enough for the kids.’ Being a parent that has spent a lot of time in the hospital since my little daughter was born, I knew then I had to do something and here we are. Last year I raised EUR 8,000. With this I brought every child that spent Christmas in Crumlin hospital a present which was anything from PSP’s, Nintendo DS’s, Dora The Explorer down to a babies rattler.”
The concert, Sophie’s Choice, will help raise money to enable the redesigning of a parents and family area in the hospital. This much needed space will provide an area for parents who currently have no where to relax, reflect or simply recharge while their sick child is sleeping, or in theatre.
Simon now got the following bands and singers to perform on the 20 Sept and is asking you to come to the event. Performing will Red Kid, Penfold DM, The Hot Sprockets, Lisa McLaughlin, Bill Coleman, Phil Kerrigan and the renowned Headphone Disco. (Headphone Disco means: On the night Paddy Sheridan and a Club NME DJ will be DJ’ing at the same time but playing totally different styles of music. Paddy will be delivering his style of house music/dirty disco on channel 1, but if are more interested in throwing some moves around the dance floor to a soul enhancing mash up of the best in new music (think Foals, Crystal Castles, Fight Like Apes & Vampire Weekend) combined with the influential masters of the past (think Bowie, The Clash, Joy Division & The Stone Roses) switch your headphones over to the Club NME Dj on channel 2 and feel free to sing at the top of your lungs!
The event is taking place on 20 Sept in the Tivoli Theatre in Francis Street (www.tivoli.ie) from 19:30. Tickets are EUR 16 and are available from the Box Office at the Tivoli Theatre. Simon asked to let as many people know as possible and in return has made two pairs of tickets available for a competition for the subscribers of this Event Guide. Thanks, Simon! To win a pair of tickets you have to send an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Sophie” and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. The mail has to be with my by 13:00 on Wed 17 Sept! Oh, and I am sure he won’t hold you back if you want to make a donation even if you win the tickets. ;-)

THE ELVIS PRESLEY SHOW – TICKET COMPETITION
I already mentioned it last week and there is another chance to enter this competition: I am singing in the backing choir of an Elvis Tribute Band. It is – and I MIGHT be a little biased – the best Elvis Tribute Band you can see. Kevin Doyle, who fronts the show, is brilliant and you can not imagine how talented and committed the whole band, The Way It Was Orchestra, is. I sing in the Gospel Choir that backs Kevin and the band and altogether we are 22 people on stage! Last year we performed The Elvis Presley Show in the Tivoli Theatre in front of a total of 5000 people, this year we presented the show in the completely sold-out National Concert Hall and if you haven’t seen it yet, you have now the opportunity to come to our even further improved show at the end of this month in the Olympia Theatre. For four nights only we will describe Elvis Presley’s life to you. You don’t have to be a fan or old enough to have lived while he was alive to enjoy our show. If you like any type of contemporary music, then the chances are that this music has been influenced or been enabled by the rock’n roll rebellion that was caused by Elvis Presley (youtube.com/watch?v=yz5GrYUqfvQ) and then you should find out what this Elvis-fella ;-) was all about. The Elvis Presley Show in the Olympia is not a musical or theatre. Instead it is a concert of many many of the relevant Elvis songs and these songs – combined with interesting multimedia clips and voice-overs – will bring you on a journey through Elvis’ life.
The Elvis Presley Show will be in the Olympia Theatre from 24-27 Sept and tickets are available here www.ticketmaster.ie/artist/909624. (EUR 33.60 and 28.00). The Saturday performance is nearly sold out already and while there is still availability on Wed, Thur and Fri, I recommend that you get your tickets soon, to make sure that you don’t miss this great show.
I managed to get 2 pairs of tickets for this event for a competition here in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and if you want to enter the draw to win a pair of tickets, you only have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Elvis” and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your entry has to be with by 13:00 on Thursday 18 Sept. And the winners will be notified by phone. The tickets are for the show on Wednesday 24 Sept, so you have to be available on that day. www.elvisthewayitwas.net/

All events in this Competition section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I get often lots of entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, but you should consider going anyway! :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

FRINGE FESTIVAL
The Fringe Festival is in full swing. It is a non-standard theatre and performance festival so performances that wouldn’t make it into a normal theatre find their place here. It is not exactly the same as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival since the large number of street performances are not included in Dublin (we have them at the Street Performance World Chamiponship earlier in the year), but there are SOME similarities. Due to the nature of the Dublin Fringe Festival, it is understandable that most of the events are not free. However, it is very much appreciated that the organisers did find some space for a few free events again! I will list the free events in this Event Guide, but please have a look at www.fringefest.com for all the other great events between 06 – 21 Sept 2008.
And one other thing: Asiling R tells me that the Spiegeltent and the Bosco theatre are in the Iveagh gardens together with 2 bars, indoor and outdoor seating and 3 food stands (La Bella Pizzella, South William Pies and German hotdogs and Pretzels). It is free to wander around this area and avail of the facilities up until 17:00 every day, and then should you want to come in at night (even if you don’t have a ticket to a show) you can pay EUR 2 and go in and enjoy the festivities. I didn’t know about this and it is good to be aware of that option! Thanks Aisling!

CULTURE NIGHT
This year’s Culture Night this taking place from 17:00-23:00 on Friday 19 September and there are so many events taking place that I could dedicate a whole Event Guide issue to this one single night. It is a brilliant idea and I can’t recommend it strong enough. You should definitely try going to some of the events and I will list a few of them this week and more next week. The website www.culturenight.ie/ lists all events and there is a detailed brochure (with purple front cover) available in some pubs/venues and in the Temple Bar Information Centre (opposite the entrance to the Meeting House Square). Plan your evening beforehand and pick out of the well over 100 events what interests you. Please note that the brochure ( PDF version is on the website) does not contain ALL events. There is a whole list of Special Events (www.culturenight.ie/listing.asp?id=40) that didn’t make it into the brochure due to printing deadlines. So use a combination of the website and the brochure.
All events are free and for anybody interested in Culture, this is THE night of the year. :-) I will have to plan some “parent-friendly” activities because my parents will be in Ireland over that weekend, but since there is something for everybody, this should not be too difficult.

STYLE IN THE CITY
With ticket prices between EUR 40 and 95 (preview for EUR 25) this fashion and shopping event is not just “not free”, but is in my opinion even very expensive. It is organised by the same company that is running the expensive Taste of Dublin event in Iveagh Gardens. I only mention this event here because it will take over Merrion Square and could impact on traffic in the area and on accessibility of Merrion Square. www.styleinthecity.ie

SKEWVILLE – GALLERY NUMBER ONE
You probably know that a pair of runners (or should I say “sneakers”) tied together and thrown over cables crossing a street are used in the US to mark the area of a street gang (or similar). In recent weeks you MIGHT have seen a pair of “flat” wooden sneakers hanging over cables in lots of locations in Dublin!? This is already part of an upcoming installation: Legendary New York street artists Skewville will be taking over the windows and creating an installation out of Gallery Number One. Skewville are renowned for their work in New York’s Lower East Side as well as their new space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This will be their first show in Ireland and promises to bring lots of colour and flavour Dublin. CITY CHASE
Free for onlookers but not at all a free event for participants (EUR 85 for two), but it looks like fun and I know that some of you are seasoned and gifted “treasure hunt” experts. So you might want to have a look at www.citychase.com/compupdates.asp?compid=dublin&evt=ireland.
City Chase is an urban adventure series that sees contestants work in teams of two to solve clues which lead them to secretly located chase point challenges that are scattered throughout the city.
The clues are designed to test their knowledge of the city and the contestants are encouraged to interact with the general public as well as friends and family to solve the clues and locate the Chase points. Each chase point consists of a different challenge designed to test the mind, body and nerve. The first team to successfully complete 10 of the 15 challenges and return to the start/finish wins and will go on to represent Dublin in the City Chase World Championships in Morocco.
The City Chase takes place on Saturday and last registration is possible between 08:30 and 10:00 on Saturday at Smithfield. Since participants are invited to use “phone a friend” facilities and in case any of you from the Dublin Event Guide Community plan to take part in this City Chase, feel free to contact me on 087 2931571 if you need help with any of the tasks and you think I can help.
For non-participants: Watching participants doing the City Chase is obviously free (you recognise them easily in their City Chase T-shirts) the event starts at 10:00 from Smithfield Plaza and it takes 4-6 hours to complete all tasks.

Soccerfest is Ireland’s largest intercultural sports festival and sees 48 teams from around the world competing against each other. The launch of the Count Us In festival will see regional representatives from the FAI, GAA, IRFU and Athletics Ireland on hand to provide coaching and mini tournaments to young people from all over Ireland on Sunday 14th from 12:00 – 16:00. Both events are free and open to the public.
This year’s Soccerfest and ‘Count Us In’ festival will have a host of family entertainment and fun as well as sports. This will include, Gymboree, Face painting, Clowns, Drummers, DJs, Punjabi Dancers, Capoeira. In addition, live music will be provided by Samba, Lisa O’Neil, The Peace Messengers, Stone and Jezreel alongside DJ’s playing world music.
Unfortunately the website www.sari.ie only has a long and “blurby” press release but doesn’t provide any details about the event. I can’t see when the Soccerfest starts and/or ends on Saturday. And there is no information about the schedule for the entertainment. All I can gather is that the Soccerfest will take place on Saturday AND Sunday and the Count Us In Festival will take place from 12:00-16:00 on Sunday only. Somewhere else I found in the advertisement “International Women’s competition” and “FAI under 12s & under 14s mixed soccer blitz” but again it would be very interesting to know when and WHO can take part. The event sounds really interesting, but it would have helped to provide some more detail if visitors (or even participants) are really welcome! Pity! www.sari.ie

SEPTEMBERFEST – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
On Sat+Sun 13-14 Sept from 11:00-18:30 the September Fest will take place in Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park. The official advertisement says “Something different is happening in Farmleigh this September. Something bold and exciting, something that is both old and new at the same time. Something that celebrates an important part of our heritage, our culture, our past, and our present. “SeptemberFest 2008” will undoubtedly be one of the huge draws at Farmleigh this year. Held over two days, Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th of September, and run in conjunction with Bord Bia, this event will have something for everybody. For the first time ever, Ireland’s craft brewers will come together to showcase their wonderful products, from traditional ales and beers, to artisan apple ciders. Their fantastic produce will be available to taste and purchase, with the dedicated brewers offering their expert advice on what beverages compliment certain dishes, as well as presenting an insight into the age old craft of brewing and its place in Irish history. With such fantastic producers like David Llewellyn showcasing his ciders, and the Carlow Brewing Company displaying their stouts and ales, the micro-brewery marquee is sure to be full of aromas and atmosphere throughout the weekend. While enjoying your glass of beer, why not take in the music of the various brass bands, guitarists and singers who will perform over the two days. There will also be lectures, exhibits and displays examining where and when our food and drink traditions were born. Some wonderful speciality food produce will also be available throughout the event with high quality speciality producers feeding the masses with their delicious offerings. From great food to fantastic beers to wonderful entertainment, “SeptemberFest 2008″ is sure to be one of the highlights on this year’s Farmeleigh calendar.”

DUBLIN CITY CYCLE
Dublin City Cycle takes place on Sunday 14 September. Departing from Merrion Square South (assembly time is 08:30 and start time is 09:30), the 10 km course goes through many of Dublin’s most famous streets and you will many well-known landmarks. Full road closures will be in place and the Gardai will marshal the event. Please note that this is fun, safe, family friendly event and is not a race. To complete the 10 km course should take no more than an hour and the roads will reopen at 11:30. According to the website only 4500 cyclists are allowed to take part, so you have to register on www.dublincitycycle.com!! Participation is free. (However, allegedly 5000 cyclists took part last year and this year’s event is meant to be bigger, so I am not so sure where the 4500 limit is coming from.)
The route goes from Merrion Square to Fitzwilliam Street, then to Lower Baggot Street, via Wilton Terrace (along the canal) into Lesson Street, then onwards to Hatch Street, Camden Street, Aungier Street, South Great George’s Street, Dame Street, Westmoreland Street over the Liffey, up O’Connell Street, then around Parnell Square and – unfortunately – the exact same route back to Merrion Square.
Cyclists, have an enjoyable day in the City Centre (hopefully the weather will be ok). Motorists, avoid the City Centre between 08:30 and 11:30 at all cost!

FILM SCREENING – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
The Spanish Cultural Institute “Instituto Cervantes” is showing a series of films exploring the notions of documentary, video-art and avant-garde cinema. The films do look interesting, but the translation from Spanish is not overly helpful! So, you have to take a bit of a gamble if you don’t understand the Spanish description here
dublin.cervantes.es/es/cultura_espanol/actividades_cultura_espanol.shtm
The English translation is a little too literal in some aspects and I find it hard to understand:
The official description says: “D-Generation. Subterranean experiences in Spanish non-fiction” invites you to explore the murky depths of the contemporary documentary in search of those pieces that cannot quite be labelled or categorised. An update on the most innovative and daring Spanish audiovisual formats, formats which have their origins in this renewed concept of the documentary and which bring us to the core of these fascinating new paths of creation.
The films will be shown on 02, 10, 11, 17, 18 + 24 Sept at 18:30 in the Instituto Cervantes in Lincoln House, Lincoln Place, Dublin 2 (just opposite the Dental Clinic at the back of TCD). All films are in Spanish with English subtitle. The films are presented by Esperanza Collado, the director of the contemporary art and cinema publication “Spectrum”.

Writing this week’s Event Guide a question came up in my little head: Do you think it would make sense to have a separate “Events for Children” category in this newsletter? Let me know what you think. Send your opinion with the subject “Children” to dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Before I go, something curious: While writing this week’s Event Guide I heated up a frozen Pizza that I had bought in Tesco during the week. It is a new range Italian Pizza and when reading the cooking instructions I found something strange. The instructions are in Italian, French, German, Dutch, Danish, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian, Russian and Slovakian language on the back of the box in addition to English (marked for “GB, IRL, USA”). The curious thing is that in ALL languages apart from English it says that you should thaw the pizza at room temperature before putting in the oven, but in English it says that you should put it in the oven “from frozen”. At first I thought the translator made a mistake, but then I realised that the cooking time in the English text is 3 min longer than in all other languages. What does this say about English speakers? You can’t expect them to thaw a Pizza before baking it?? ANYBODY else, but NOT English speakers? Hmmmmm. I am puzzled! — Ok, ok, I DO realise that you COULD ask yourself as well: What does it say about this German guy, who is meant to write an Event Guide and instead wastes his time reading Cooking Instructions in Russian. ;-)

Enjoy the weekend!

–Joerg
