Hi all!

What have we done wrong???? Why are the weather gods soooo angry with us? Do we not deserve at least a couple of rays of sun. I like living in Ireland, but summers like that make me wonder how much longer I can stand it. It nearly makes you hope for Global Warming IF that results in a dryer climate! :-O Last week I asked for suggestions to improve the weather and I received an interesting suggestion. I mentioned rain dances and somebody suggested doing a rain dance backwards! Do we have any experienced rain dancers among us? We should definitely try it to stop the Monsoon!;-) Some older Irish people still talk about the summer of 1995 as the one summer when the weather was really good. That is 13 (!!!) years ago! It is about time that there will be another one to talk about!

This weekend, the most important Festival of the year (in my calendar!) will take place and I soooo hope for at least some dry hours (How modest the wishes get!).

The Festival of World Culture in 2002 was where the idea to this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) was originally born (the trigger to turn the idea into reality was the Street Performance World Championship 2006 and the Dublin City Soul Festival 2007) and this year sees the 8th Festival of World Culture. From initially a few hundred people, the festival now attracts more than 200,000 people (according to the organisers) and it is definitely my favourite event every year. Unless you have really important plans already OR planned your holidays badly and are away ;-), you should definitely try to come to Dun Laoghaire either on Saturday or on Sunday OR – even better – on both days. I will be there both days and if you want to meet up contact me on 087-2931571. I will be most of the time at or near Newtownsmith Green, where the main stage is.

By the way, the work on renaming the Event Guide (due to the objections to the name of another publication ;-) ) is still ongoing. In addition I am working on getting more sponsorship for this Event Guide and on the possibility of including a small amount of advertisement in order to finance the outlays I have, but as well – let me be totally honest – to generate some money that allows me to invest more of my time (or to justify the investment of even more time) to expand and improve this Event Guide further. I have a number of ideas and will share them with you over time.

UNSTOPPABLE BRILLIANCE – BOOK COMPETITION
Going by the number of entries I get, it seems that you all really like book competitions and we are lucky to have such a great supporter in Liberties Press who regularly make books available. I did get a chance this week to read some parts of “Unstoppable Brilliance” and it is a really interesting book. If you haven’t entered the competition yet, you have another few days! Here is what I wrote last week about the book and the competition: Liberties Press, the independent Irish publisher, who has an impressive catalogue of good books, has launched a new book. The book is called “Unstoppable Brilliance – Irish Geniuses and Asperger’s Syndrome” by Antoinette Walker and Prof. Michael Fitzgerald and is hugely interesting and controversial at the same time.
The book is described as “This fascinating and controversial book suggests that many of the most notable people in Irish politics, the arts and sciences may have exhibited traits of Asperger’s syndrome (a variant of autism) – and asserts that much of their drive and success may in some way be connected to this condition. The book is aimed at the general reader and features an introduction by MEP and rights activist Kathy Sinnott. Figures covered in the book include Robert Emmet, Pádraig Pearse, Éamon de Valera, Robert Boyle: scientist, William Rowan Hamilton: mathematician, Daisy Bates: ethnographer, WB Yeats, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett.
Very often people who are affected by Asperger’s exhibit high-level abilities in certain areas, other physical or behavioural traits may also be apparent. In Unstoppable Brilliance, the authors seek to demonstrate the particular facts, foibles and attributes of many well-known Irish historical figures, and show that in many ways their drive, focus and considerable achievements were almost inevitable given their high-level aptitude in particular fields – an aptitude not entirely of their own making or volition.” Michael Fitzgerald is a Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Trinity College, Dublin and is the leading expert on Asperger’s and autism in Ireland today. Antoinette Walker is a freelance editor and writer.

“For those who love to go to the cinema, but don’t always have a buddy to go along with. The aim of the group is to meet up during the week and go see a movie together in one of Dublin’s central cinemas (Cineworld, Savoy & Screen – for now) The group meet a few minutes before screening and then after the film have a bit of a chinwag over a drink/coffee.” Joining the club is free (but when you go to the cinema you obviously have to pay for the ticket). WESTLINK TOLL BRIDGE
For some of you the 30 Aug will bring a simplification of your daily trip to work, but it is not all rosy. From that day the Westlink M50 Toll Bridge will use a barrier-free tolling system and the aim is to eliminate the daily traffic jams at the toll bridge (it is doubtful that that will be achieved until the M50 upgrade is completed in 2010, though). The toll should – in my opinion – be removed totally since our taxes already paid for the bridge and for the purchase of the tolling rights from the private company NTR. However, the government has not only decided to keep the toll system in place, but as well decided to increase the charges again.
In order to pay your toll you need to buy and attach a tag to the inside of your windscreen if you use the bridge regularly. If you are an infrequent user, you have two options: You can either register using “video registration” or you can “pay as you go”. For the eflow tag you pay an administration fee of EUR 1 per month and you pay EUR 2 every time you cross the bridge. If you use video registration you pay EUR 2.50 for crossing the bridge and no administration charge. If you use the “pay as you go” method you need to pay before 20:00 on the day after you crossed the bridge otherwise penalties will be added to your bill. You can pay online www.eflow.ie or through their call centre. The “pay as you go” price is EUR 3 per bridge crossing. A LOT of money if you are forced to use the bridge.
Only one group of drivers seems to potentially benefit substantially and probably will get a “free ride”. If your car is registered abroad and therefore doesn’t have an Irish number plate, it seems that you can’t be forced to pay because there are no agreements with foreign authorities to get the money from you. The eflow website says differently in the FAQ section, but there are grounds to speculate that the information given there is currently not fully based on facts. Officially you are NOT exempt from having to pay and it is an offence not to pay. But in reality it seems that the toll payment can not be enforced outside Ireland. (I read that in some newspaper and it is your responsibility to make sure that this information is correct! I won’t take any responsibility and am not suggesting that you should break the law. I am only relaying information from a newspaper article.)

SOLOMON GALLERY
The Solomon Gallery which for 27 years (!!) was on the top floor of the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre will cease operation on 01 October. The newly formed “Solomon Fine Art” will continue providing services to customers, but there won’t be a Gallery anymore.

EMERALD HOOPS – BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
Shane Whelan from baskteballireland.ie contacted me and offered a pair of tickets for a competition but unfortunately his mail got caught in a Spam filter and reached me too late. So due to now fault of his, I couldn’t give his event the space it did deserve. Because of this, I will list it know here, despite the fact that it is not free. He tried to give something free and am grateful for it.
On 21/22/23 Aug an international basketball tournament called “Emerald Hoops” is taking place in the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. The US College Giants Notre Dame together with the senior international men’s teams from Ireland, Poland and Iceland are taking part. For the international teams the Emerald Hoops International Series will be a key component in their preparation for the 2008/09 European Championships. The two year qualifying tournament leads to the Championship Finals which take place in Poland in late 2009.
The Polish/Irish Family Day will be running in tandem with the International Series and will take place on Saturday 23 Aug.

MOVIES ON THE SQUARE
The summer season in Temple Bar is coming to an end and this is the last movie screening on Meeting House Square for this season. It is a Closing Gala and the film shown will be the hugely funny “Life of Brian”. The screening on 22 August (This week on Friday instead of the Saturday!!) will start at 22:00. You need to get free tickets before and you can get them from the Temple Bar Information Office (they are available since 16 Aug and could be all gone, but it is worth trying). The Northside Music Festival comes to a close this week and there are 6 events from this Friday until Thursday for you to enjoy. Admission is free to all events.
On Fri 22 Aug an Opera Gala will take place at 19:00 in Marino in Carleton Hall (53a Shelmartin Ave). The gala contains opera favourites, including magical songs from the musicals. Led by musical director David Wray, singers will include highly acclaimed opera singers Sandra Oman, Declan Kelly, Liz Ryan and Simon Morgan, among others.

PHANTOM FIRST FRIDAY
Since July, Phantom 105.2 have been running the “Phantom First Friday” event at ALT (Andrews Lane Theatre) on the first Friday of the month. The event consists of live performances from two up-and-coming Irish bands, with a headline set by a more established Irish band. At the next “Phantom First Friday” Autamata, New Amusement and guests will perform followed by a DJ set with Sinister Pete. Doors are at 20:00 and admission is free before 22:30 (EUR 7 after 22:30). FESTIVAL OF WORLD CULTURES – DUN LAOGHAIRE
I really find it difficult to write about this festival, because I just don’t know where to start and where to stop. It is the most varied festival in Ireland, I think. Music, Dance, Markets, Art and 250,000 people! How can I capture that in a few paragraphs? Well, I guess the ONLY way you can find out what the Festival of World Culture is, is by going there. Words don’t do it justice. When you go, make sure that you visit the Fairs and Markets (International & Gourmet Food Traders, Oxfam Global Village, Cool Earth Environmental Market). Then visit the People’s Park (Solo Flamenco will perform there on Sat 13:45-14:25) and after that go to the main stage at Newtownsmith Green (picking up some food on the way). In the evening go to one of the pubs in buzzing Dun Laoghaire where you will hear more brilliant bands! There are a number of non-free events, but you will be able to have a brilliant day, hearing loads of good music, without having to pay for anything. The main stage programme is here:

By the way: Dublin Bus has an extended service for the festival, there will be additional DARTs including late services and Pay and Display Parking will not be enforced over the weekend in Dun Laoghaire (but expect that all parking spaces are gone by mid afternoon). In the Blackrock area this exemption does not apply!
I think I will leave it at that! Just make sure that you go to Dun Laoghaire, ESPECIALLY if this is the first time you have the chance! :-)

The Visual Arts Workshop “Fairy Kingdoms” will take place in the Cowshed Theatre or – if the weather is good – outdoors in Farmleigh House on Sat 23 Aug at 13:30 for 4-6 year olds and at 15:30 for 7-9 year olds. “Create miniature kingdoms for the elves and fairies outdoors amongst the trees and flowers in Farmleigh gardens. Clay workshop: using clay sticks and found organic matter from the gardens.”

The Northside Music Festival comes to a close this week and there are 6 events from this Friday until Thursday for you to enjoy. Admission is free to all events.
On Sat 23 Aug “THE SESSION – Music Show for all in the family With Robbie Harris and Emer Mayock plus guests” will take place from 18:00 in the Finglas Youth Centre (The Den, St. Helena’s Road). “The Session presents a concert of traditional Irish music, song and dance in a relaxed environment, during which an audience of children and adults are taken on a journey of traditional music. The show is interactive and the audience participates throughout the concert, learning rhythm patterns to clap along to the music, learning vocal parts to join in the songs and getting on their feet to dance to reels, jogs and polkas.”

HERITAGE WEEK
Heritage Week will run in Ireland from 24-31 Aug 2008. It’s a week long celebration of who we are and where we’ve come from. Heritage Week is part of European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union. In Ireland Heritage Week is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council with support from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government.
There is something taking place in every county and most activities are free of charge or offer great value for money. Everyone is encouraged to get involved and activities range from fairs, night-time bat walks, wildlife tours and lectures to music recitals, historical re-enactments, and outdoor activities. Many heritage sites and stately homes will offer free admission or special concessions. You can contact the Heritage Council on 1850 200 878 or via mail to events@heritagecouncil.com. In the Dublin Area alone there are more than 200 (!!!!!!) events during that week and unfortunately it is not easy to gather them so that I can list them here in this Event Guide.

DUBLIN CITY TRIATHLON
The Dublin City Triathlon is taking place on Sunday in Phoenix Park. The 1.5km swim will be in the Liffey at the Garda Boat Club in Chapelizod Road, Transition is at the UCD Boat Club, the 40km cycling will then be in Phoenix Park (5 laps) and the final 10 km run will be in Phoenix park as well. 602 athletes will take part in the Triathlon and it is a really interesting spectacle to watch as well. The race will start at 08:30 and all will be over at 12:00. If you want to watch the race, get up early! All the details, including the course description are in this document:

FAMILY SUNDAY – NATIONAL PRINT MUSEUM
On Sun 17, 24 and 31 Aug the National Print Museum is inviting to workshops and training and – rather unusual for the National Print Museum – all is free. The Museum is in Haddington Road in Dublin 4 and the entrance is to the left from the Beggar’s Buh pub. The museum is open from 11:00-17:00.
On arrival at the museum you will receive an Action Pack filled with activity sheets to keep you busy as you look around the Museum. Throughout the museum there are Action stations where you can try your hand at a traditional method of printing or make your very own printer’s hat.
Workshops throughout the day are
Illustration Session from 12:00-13:00: Join our expert Illustrators including P.J. Lynch, Adrienne Geoghegan & Orla Roche.

ART IN THE MAKING – FILM SCREENING
The Hugh Lane Gallery at Parnell Square invites to a film screening on Sun 24 Aug at 13:30. The film is called “Art in the Making – Impressionism” and it explores how the Impressionists worked, using detailed examinations of original paintings by artists such as Manet and Monet as examples. Running time approx 47 min. The screening is free.

NORTHSIDE MUSIC FESTIVAL 08
The Northside Music Festival comes to a close this week and there are 6 events from this Friday until Thursday for you to enjoy. Admission is free to all events.

On Sun 24 Aug “Prey” will perform outdoors from 15:00 in St. Anne’s Park at the Red Stables. Earlier, from 13:30, a family percussion workshop will be provided indoors. Phone 01-2227377 for workshop bookings. Places are limited. “Prey is a trio of women, creating a different type of wind ensemble. A charming performance of medieval to contemporary music, idiosyncratically arranged for bass clarinet, alto flute, oboe d’amore and others is Prey’s contribution to the Festival. They perform a vibrant mix of contemporary, classical, medieval, and world music.”

On Sun 24 Aug the “No Crows” will perform outdoors in Albert College Park in Glasnevin (access via Hampstead Avenue) from 15:00. The No Crows Quartet from Sligo is led by Felip Carbonell, a magnificent Mallorcan guitarist with his Flamenco/Manouche style guitar. Steve Wickhman of ‘The Waterboys’ is the violinist, Anna Houston plays Cello and Mandolin and Eddie Lee provides the hot grooves on his double bass. Their repertoire is truly global as their music ranges from China to Moldova, to Russia, to Greece and beyond.

ART WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN – NATIONAL GALLERY
On Sunday 24 Aug from 15:00 an Arts Workshop for children from 4-10 years will take place at the National Gallery on Merrion Square West. The Kids Sunday Art Workshop is entitled “Landscape with a Flight of Stairs” by Chaim Soutine and with Mary Noonan. A series of guest speakers reflect on “An Ideal Husband”. TOUR OF IRELAND – CYCLING RACE
On Wed 27 Aug the first stage of the Tour of Ireland Cycling Race will take place. 112 Cyclists will cycle over 900km. The race will start at 10:15 in the Docklands in Dublin and will then progress to Enniskerry where the cyclists are expected at approx. 11:00. You can see them cycle by in the Dublin area on this course: Grand Canal Quay, Pearse Street, Macken Street, Grand Canal Street Lower, Clanwilliam Place, Warrington Place, Herbert Place, Wilton Terrace, Leeson Street Lower, Leeson Street Upper, Morehampton Road, Donnybrook Road, Stillorgan Road, Fosters Avenue, Mount Anvil Road, left at Goat Public House, Lower Kilmacud Road, Upper Kilmacud Road, Ballinteer Road, direction Sandyford, left at Beacon Hotel onto Blackthorn Drive, left onto Enniskerry Road and past the National Mint, Dundrum.
They will NOT race in Dublin because the first 10km are neutralised. Not sure what the purpose of a neutralised race is (it certainly is not exciting to watch), but I am sure someone sees some sense in it. www.tourofireland.ie/stages.html

LAST WEDNESDAY SERIES – POETRY
As part of this Last Wednesday Series Reading and Open Mic, five poets will read poems on 27 Aug in Cassidy’s of Westmoreland St, Dublin 2. The poets are Steve Conway, Donal Moloney, Ross Hattaway, Noel Ó Briain and Oran Ryan. PINT AND PICTURE FILM CLUB
Howard Linnane (086 3614787) is – in co-operation with the pub “Russells of Ranelagh” – running a film club. The film club shows screenings of Irish short films and feature films for free on the big screen in “Russells” in Ranelagh.
For a while the film club took place on Wednesdays. The next event, however, is NOT on 27 August, but instead it will move to a Monday slot from 01 Sept and will – good news for employed people – move to the evening time again. I will tell you more about this next week.
(Russells of Ranelagh is on the main street, just down from the Luas station and across from the Triangle, it is the pub with the nice balcony at the front).

2 MILE RACE
On Wed 27 Aug at 19:30 a 2 mile race will start in Irishtown. I couldn’t find any further information about the race, though.

Not free, but organised by the nice people from Solo Flamenco who have many times made free tickets for competitions available to me, so this time I will be happy to mention their workshop even without free tickets.

The classes are 12:00-13:00 for Beginners (EUR 15), 13:00-14:00 for Technique (EUR 15) and 14:00-16:00 for Intermediate (EUR 30). At this time of the year, the outdoor events start disappearing from the calendar bit by bit. The Fringe Festival and Culture Night in September will be some of the final outdoor events for the year. So if you get a chance, then use the opportunity to go to the Festival of World Culture or to the Northside Music Festival this weekend or to one of the brilliant events in the context of the Heritage Week.
Remember: Try to do every week at least ONE thing that is out of your normal behaviour patterns (doesn’t have to be in the context of events!). That way you expand your horizon, you might experience something really great that you otherwise would have never given a chance and you stay young – at least in your mind. :-)
