Event Guide 52: Street Performance World Championship, Tango, Sevillanas, Bingham Cup, Books in the park, Teddy Bear’s Picnic, Bloomsday

Hi all!

This is now finally the long awaited ;-) anniversary edition of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. 52 Event Guides means approx. 520 hours of writing and researching (Ok, in the beginning it was less, but currently it is already more, so it does balance out somewhere.) From 20 recipients, the distribution list grew to nearly 1300 now and the facebook group (www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7276986445) grew from 0 in January to 1473 members today. (Lots of people still join the facebook group and never subscribe to the weekly Event Guide mail. Something that continues to puzzle me, but I gave up to be concerned about it, it is merely amusing. :-) )

Over the 52 issues the Event Guide has evolved somewhat – not in a revolutionary way, though – , grew in size, does contain more events, does cover the whole week now, not only the weekend and is hopefully a bit easier readable (with more headlines) than in the beginning. I know that there are still a lot of improvements possible as far as the layout is concerned. But you might remember that this would increase the work and it would mean that I would have even more problems with Spam filters, so it will take another while until I will be able to tackle it.

The Dublin Event Guide is still called Dublin Event Guide, but it is still intended to change the name once some more hurdles are cleared. It still covers free events only, but I am glad to say that we have more and more competitions for free tickets for non-free events (and since recently even for books!), thanks to some great organisers!

Writing and researching the Event Guide continues to be a one-man show and the whole project is still a non-commercial hobby. I asked for sponsorship ideas and carefully suggested that you could donate a few shekels, but since that appeal wasn’t very fruitful, I might have to consider some advertisement in the Event Guide in its second year of life so pay for the cost AND to be able to finance further planned improvements.

I hope you still enjoy the weekly newsletter and make good use of it. Let me know if you have suggestions or ideas for improvements and while I can’t promise that I will be able to implement them, I will definitely consider them! It was just an idea that I had last week, but the positive feedback I got from you after mentioning it in the Event Guide means that we will go ahead with it. On Tuesday 17 June we will have a 1st Birthday Party for the Dublin Event Guide in the Porterhouse in Temple Bar. Don’t expect a birthday cake or funny hats or people singing “Happy Birthday” or free food, but DO expect to meet myself and hopefully at least 5-10 other members of the Event Guide community for a chat (and a drink). If you are on your own and don’t know anybody, come along and you will meet lots of nice people. If you want to bring a whole gang of friends, please do so, everybody is welcome!

So these are the logistics: Dublin Event Guide Community Meeting in Porterhouse in Temple Bar (Parliament Street) on Tues 17 June at 20:00. We will meet on the first floor, we will NOT have a reserved area, but you will see me with a red badge (with smiley face on it, still form our February meeting! :-) ) and I might stick one or two A4 pages with “DEG Birthday” on the wall in the area we are in. SEVILLANAS CLASS
Our generous friends from Solo Flamenco and Raffa Abarca are organising a Spanish Night every Saturday night in Liberty Hall. You probably remember Solo Flamenco from their Flamenco classes for which they regularly make tickets available. Long term readers might remember Raffa as well, he made free tickets for a Brazilian Guitar Duo available to us in October of last year and he is currently organising and promoting the Flamenco García Tour and their gig in the National Concert Hall on 18 June (Tickets: www.nch.ie).
At the Spanish Night in Liberty Hall (every Saturday evening) Solo Flamenco are teaching Sevillanas from 21:00-22:00. Then at 22:30 there will be a performance of two Flamenco Guitarists, who are as well the supporting act at the Flamenco García Tour. (Admission to the Spanish Night is free until 23:00!) The Sevillanas classes are 5 Euro per person and if you are interested and if you are very fast you can win tickets. Solo Flamenco made TWO pairs of tickets available for the Sevillanas class tomorrow evening (Saturday). If you want to win a pair of tickets, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com. The classes sound like a lot of fun and I am confident that Solo Flamenco will make them as interesting and “divertido” as possible!
For the Spanish Night the bar is open till late and there will be a DJ too. In addition there is a raffle to win a ticket to the NCH too so that’s plenty of good reasons to go to the Spanish Night on Saturday!

TANGO CLASSES
Another few hours for you to enter this competition:
Natural Tango (naturaltango.blogspot.com/) are running Tango classes every Monday in Turk’s Head in Parliament Street, near Temple Bar. John Rownan and Erika Lerma, who both studied and practised Tango for many years and who were taught in Buenos Aires among other places are teaching Argentine Tango every week. The classes are 19:30-20:30 Beginners Class, 20:30-21:30 Intermediate-Advanced Class. After 21:30 a Tango Club will give you the chance to practise what you have learned with great music. The classes are drop-in classes and you don’t need a partner to participate. The cost for a class (Beginners or Intermediate/Advanced) PLUS entry to the Tango Club is EUR 10 and you don’t need to pre-book.

LIGHTS, CAMERY, DYNAMITE – BOOK COMPETITION

The biggest news this week is that the Street performance World Championship is back in Merrion Square and that you should do whatever possible to go there at least for one or two hours.

The radio station “98FM” has rebranded, it seems, and is now called “Dublin’s 98”. I am not sure if dropping the “FM” and adding “Dublin’s” is doing it for me. When I saw the newly painted bus during the week, I was wondering what it is. “98FM” never left room for any doubts about the fact that it is a radio station. The new colour scheme is shades of pink and again: Not really my thing! What do you think about the new name and look?

The Prince concert has been cancelled on 16 June! Allegedly there is a plan to re-schedule the concert for 2009, but in the meantime all ticket holders get a full refund.

For a number of weeks I listed the In-store performances of singers and bands in HMV and Tower Records here. Tower Records has a rather poor website, but they had all that more current information on a myspace page (www.myspace.com/tower_records), Good idea! And I know that a number of you, regularly went to In-store performances, so the advertisement worked. However, maybe Tower Records does NOT want people to know about their events, because they now have decided to set the myspace page to private. I am not (and won’t be) a myspace member, so I won’t be able to tell you about these events anymore. Maybe someone should explain to Tower Records, that “letting people know” is a good thing?

ÁBHAR AGUS MEON EXHIBITION SERIES
This is an exhibition series celebrating Art and Archaeology. In June/July 2008, 23 international contemporary artists will take part in the Ábhar agus Meon exhibition series in Dublin as part of Ireland’s hosting of the Sixth World Archaeological Congress (29 June – 4 July 2008). Directed by Dr Ian Russell of the Humanities Institute of Ireland, UCD, exhibitions will occur at four venues throughout the city involving installations and interventions by artists exploring the themes, processes and practices of art and archaeology.

Newman House, UCD (85-86 St Stephen’s Green) will host the exhibition Chronoscope. Curated by Ian Russell in collaboration with Jerome O Drisceoil (Director, Green On Red Gallery) and Ruth Ferguson (Curator, Newman House, UCD). The exhibition will feature new works by Irish artists Alice Maher, Bea McMahon, Dennis McNulty, Paul Mosse, Niamh O’Malley and Nigel Rolfe. The Health Sciences Gallery, UCD (Health Sciences Building) will host the exhibition Glass House Stone. The Irish Museum of Modern Art will host a new commission by Fiona Hallinan with sound designer Caoimhin O’Ragallaigh. Titled “The You That Is In It”, the audio installation will guide visitors through an intervention into the spaces of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) and the Royal Hospital Kilmainham. The installation will be open to the public 30 June – 16 November 2008.

GROUP SHOW – GALLERY ZOZIMUS
I already mentioned “An exhibition of the absurd” in Gallery Zozimus last week, but today Trish Kerr provided me with further information and told me that one of the artists, Kevin McSheery is a friend of hers. She asked if I could mention a bit more about this show that runs from 05 June-26 June. The artists are: Annie West, Kevin McSherry and Fintan Taite. Zozimus (aka Michael Moran) was one of Ireland’s most prominent eccentrics and entertained citizens with absurd and bizarre tales as he wandered the streets of Dublin.
With this in mind, three of Ireland’s finest award-winning and eccentric illustrators have come together at the gallery that bears his name to present a fun exhibition of the absurd, titled “What if…?”.
Illustrator Annie West visits great moments in history in a series of Limited Edition Fine Art prints. She turns the great and the mighty upside down and gives them a good shake to reveal a farcical side to the icons who litter the leaving cert history books.
Despite being born in London, Kevin McSherry has always explored and fiercely asserted his Irish identity, which often is apparent in his work. He has strong leanings towards traditional painting skills with an emphasis on good drawing. The technique, he says, is only half the story. ‘You have to be able to tell a story -to enthrall the viewer and take them into your world. The more absurd that world is; the better’.
He’s a regular contributor to the Sunday Tribune, Magill, The Wall Street Journal, The Irish Times.
Fintan Taite’s work is seen regularly in the best newspapers and magazines and he illustrated Shane Colman’s recent Irish best-seller, ‘Foot in Mouth – famous Irish Political Gaffes’

STREET PERFORMANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Yes, you are reading right, the Street Performance World Championship already starts on the Friday! 12 performances will take place today between 12:00 and 19:00. If you are nearby, go to Merrion Square for your lunch break and enjoy “Mr. Spin” from 13:00-13:45. STREET PERFORMANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – BRAVOSHO
Last year the Street Performance World Championships started with the free (but ticketed) Jesters Ball in Dublin Castle, an evening of Street Performance snippets, performed on a stage. This year the “The Bravosho” will instead open the festival and to simplify the process, the show is not ticketed any more, instead it is a first-come-first-serve with doors opening already at 18:00. With reasonably good weather today, expect that event to get busy and make sure that you are at Dublin Castle in time! I am not sure when the show actually starts, but with some additional warm clothes and some food, you are prepared for anything.

BINGHAM CUP 2008
I usually don’t write about Sports Event because this Event Guide would treble in size if I were to include them. But yesterday I was explicitly asked to include this one event and since it is big enough and might interest a number of sports enthusiasts I will include it: This weekend the Bingham Cup 2008 is taking place in DCU. From Friday until Sunday (start time 10:00) more than 30 international gay rugby teams compete against each other in their world cup. The Dublin Team “Emerald Warriors RFC” is in the mix as well and will try to win against strong competitors from Sydney, Paris, USA, Holland, etc. You can find all the information on www.binghamcup.com/ and www.ewrfc.ie/

COMMONPLACE PROJECTS: WORKSHOPS / INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCES

BLOOMSDAY 2008
Bloomsday marks the day in 1904 on which all the action of James Joyce’s novel Ulysses takes place. It is celebrated every year on 16th June by Joyceans all over the world. In Dublin, where the novel is set, Bloomsday celebrations go on for a week (09 June-16 June), with most of the attention on the day itself. It is traditional to dress up and go out for the day, visiting the locations of the book and taking part in readings, walks and convivial activities of all sorts which in some way connect with Ulysses, its author and its world. Many, but not all of the events are run by the James Joyce Centre at 35 North Great George’s Street, Dublin 1 and advance booking is advised for these. A Tribute to Joyce by Spanish and Irish Witers

“Through his literary works, James Joyce entered the Spanish consciousness, forging a secret connection between Spain and Ireland. His writing left a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of many creators. For Bloomsday 2008 renown writers Jordi Soler, Edwardo Lago and Antonio Soler will join Ciaran Cosgrove, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Hispanic Studies Department, Trinity College Dublin and David Butler, Lecturer in Hispanic Studies, Carlow College to explore these indelible traces through a roundtable discussion on Joyce’s work and his reception with the Hispanic world.
The Lincoln Inn, famed for its Joycean connection to Finns Hotel where a young Nora Barnacle worked as a chambermaid, will host all participants and audience members of the Bloomsday Roundtable, to a drinks reception following the event! The Lincoln Inn is located at 18/19 Lincoln Place across the road from the Cervantes Institute.”

MARGENES – SPANISH AVANT-GARDE ART
Márgenes: Experimento y Praxis is a month of Spanish contemporary avant-garde art featuring a series of talks, experimental film screenings, multiple sound-screen environments, expanded cinema events, and interventions in the public space. Starting on 12 June, Márgenes will take place at the National Gallery of Ireland, This is Not a Shop gallery, and different public locations in the city of Dublin. A special closing event with food and live music will take place at Phoenix Park on 25 June.
Esperanza Collado, who is the curator of this initiative informed me about it and it sounds very interesting. Please note that the events take place on Fri, Sat and Sun of this week, not just on Friday.

An on-going expanded cinema project by Esperanza Collado consisting in a live film performance in collaboration with all artists and curators present in Márgenes. It will be accompanied by improvised music with modular synthesizers by Irish composer Neil O’Connor, aka Somadrone.
19-25 June
19:00 This is Not a Shop “FOG – Marta Fernández Calvo”, Opening and presentation:
Thursday 18th June. Fog is a participatory artistic intervention work intended to be developed in the landscape. The large fog banks that move across the landscape are the actual starting point of this project. The artist, Marta Fernández Calvo, has created a “portable fog kit” from different photographs of fog taken in Dolominas (Italy). The “kit” will be presented to Dublin inhabitants at a meeting and presentation on the 18th of June at This is Not a Shop, in which people will be welcome to book Fog for its installation during one day in whatever public space they require. The artist will install the piece in a different emplacement every single day between 19th-25th of June. In addition, all request forms to install Fog in the city will be used by the artist to construct a calendar containing the dates and locations in which Fog will be installed in Dublin. The resulting daily documentation process – letters, impressions, photographs, video and sound recordings, etc.- will be simultaneously shown in the gallery, which will become a documentation base of accumulative work generated by Fog.

STREET PERFORMANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Does anybody get the impression that I am a BIG Street Performance World Championship fan? Well, let me tell you, I am! I was at the event the first time 2 years ago and it was just brilliant! I will never forget Pedro from Spain who was doing street theatre with balloons. A BRILLIANT show! Then there was the guy who played piano by dropping balls from a height onto it and many more. Since then I am telling everybody who wants to hear (and everybody who doesn’t want to hear) about this event. Together with the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire and the Dublin City Soul Festival, this event is one of the top three events in Dublin, in my opinion. And the best: It all is free. Well, apart from the voluntary contribution that you are invited to give after each performance. The performers are amazing, so bring some money to reward them.
Over the weekend a total of 120 shows will be performed by 16 main contestants and a few more “supporting acts”. You won’t be bored for a second and no matter what the weather, I already know that I will be there for hours on Saturday and on Sunday.
The performances start on Saturday at 12:00 and run until 19:00. There are 7 (!!) different pitches and the shows typically last 45-50 minutes, then you have 10 minutes to go to the next location where the next show will begin on time.
All is organised perfectly and the only slight challenge last year was the sound equipment at some pitches…and last year’s weather.
Oh and YOU can vote for the best act and therefore influence who will be the 2008 Street Performance World Champion!!
Oh, you wonder why WORLD Championship? Well, the two guys who came up with the idea, Mark Duckenfield and Conor McCarthy, realised that there was no such competition anywhere in the world and decided to grab the “world” tag before anyone else did! Smart move! :-)
Ok. Enough of this, stop reading if it is Saturday and get yourself to Merrion Square!! See you there!?

FATHER’S DAY – DUNDRUM SHOPPING CENTRE
I have to admit that I am not a fan or even a supporter of a Father’s Day. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I am not a father, but I doubt it. I am very much in favour of Mother’s Day, though. ;-) Feel free to call me weird. :-)
The Dundrum Shopping Centre (a.k.a. Dundrum Town Centre) is, however, falling over backwards with all the father’s day offerings:
On Saturday and on Sunday there are a number of activities and chill-out areas available.
The ultimate Formula 1 Pit stop Challenge will take place at the travellators, located on Level One, on Sat+Sun from 12:00-18:00. Dad’s can compete against each other changing tyres on a mock-racing car.
On Level 3, the specially-created Dads Pad will provide a place for dads to chill out, read the paper, enjoy some Sony play station games, a game of fuzz ball or simply relax on a comfy couch with the lads and watch one of many all time favourite lads’ movies on Sony’s 40-inch home theatre entertainment system!
The Dundrum Father’s Day climbing wall, which will be located on Town Square on Sunday, 15 June from 12:00-17:00 will challenge you against the clock and allow you to test your fitness as you find out how long it takes you to climb to the top.

STREET PERFORMANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – BRAVOSHO
Another Bravosho is taking place on Sat in Dublin Castle. Again doors open at 18:00 and it is a matter of “first-come-first-serve”. Get there early if you want to get it.

BALLYMUN GOSPEL CHOIR CONCERT
The Ballymun Gospel Choir and Band will perform a fundraiser concert for the Simon Community, where they will sing a variety of contemporary uplifting songs and well-known Gospel songs that have been arranged specially for them. The concert will take place in St. Ann’s Church in Dawson Street, Dublin 2 on Sat 14 June at 20:00 and tickets will be available at the door for 10 Euro. Because the Gospel Choir has made tickets available for a competition (see in competition section), this event is included here.
The concert wants to highlight the ongoing plight of homeless people and the vital work of the Dublin Simon Community. The Dublin Simon Community offers people a “continuum of care” throughout the stages of homelessness. It includes contacting rough sleepers on the streets through its rough sleeper team and soup run; emergency shelter; supported and transitional housing; resettlement; learning and development; alcohol and detox services; and the tenancy sustainment service.
The Ballymun Gospel Choir is supported by the Jesuit youth organisation Slí Eile (www.sli-eile.com). The musical director of the Ballymun Gospel Choir is Cathy Burke.

TEDDY BEAR’S PICNIC – BLACKROCK PARK
The second annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic will take place on Sun 15 June from 13:00-17:00 in Blackrock Park.
A record number of people and teddy bears are expected to Blackrock Park for one of Ireland’s biggest Teddy Bear’s Picnics. Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown Events Summer Season invites young and old alike to bring their bears and blankets to the Teddy Bears’ Picnic. This celebration of the Teddy Bear for all the family will feature Doctor Ted from The Dolls Store and Teddy Bears Hospital who will be on hand to do minor repairs and health checks and to give ailing Teddy Bears a clean bill of health. There will also be a DJ, face painting, bouncy castles and inflatable games for all ages, entertainment on the Lake Stage, a “make & do” area and, of course, picnic facilities with goodies galore.
The Teddy Bears Picnic is a celebration of the Teddy Bear for all the family. The event is free but everyone should bring a Teddy Bear to get into the picnic. GARDINER STREET GOSPEL CHOIR and BALLYMUN GOSPEL CHOIR
Every Sunday from September to the end of June the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir and the Ballymun Gospel Choir sing at masses in their respective churches. The Gardiner Street Gospel Mass is at 19:30 in Gardiner Street Church at the top of Upper Gardiner Street (near the junction with Dorset Street) and Ballymun Gospel Mass is at 19:00 in Shangan Road Church (turn right before the Ballymun Plaza Hotel/Travellodge and you will find the church after 150 metres on the left). The two choirs are related and you probably know by now that I do the Sound Engineering for the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir. Both choirs take a break over the summer and for the Gardiner Street Choir the last mass before the summer is on the 22 June and Ballymun will have the last Gospel Mass on 29 June. In mid-September both choirs will be back.

MEXICAN TALL SHIP IN DUBLIN
The Mexican Tall Ship Cuauhtémoc will visit Dublin Port from Mon 16 to Sat 21 June. It will be docked at Berth 8, Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. The Cuauhtémoc (named after the last Aztec Emperor) is the Mexican Navy premier training vessel. Every year, it sails to foreign lands in instruction trips for Mexican officers, carrying a message of friendship and good will from the People of Mexico. This magnificent 1,800 tonnes tall ship will be open for visit to the public outside official functions during its weeklong stay in Dublin (in particular, the arrival and departure are truly spectacular). All are welcome. Visits are possible on Mon 16 June: 11:30-20:00, Tues 17 June: 10:00-16:00, Wed 18 June: 10:00-20:00, Thurs 19 June: 10:00-20:00, Fri 20 June: 10:00-20:00.

Howard Linnane (086 3614787) is in co-operation with the pub “Russells of Ranelagh” running an interesting film club. The film club shows screenings of Irish short films and feature films for free on the big screen in “Russells” in Ranelagh.

MOVING WORLDS – MOVIE SCREENINGS
In recent weeks I have told you about Moving Worlds, a film series on migration and integration, however, I wrongly attributed Moving Worlds to the Instituto Cervantes and the Goethe-Institut. I now found out that this is incorrect. Instead Moving Worlds has been organised by the Forum on Migration and Communications (FOMACS) at DIT, in association with various cultural institutes (incl. Instituto Cervantes, Goethe-Institut, Austrian embassy, Alliance Francaise and Create).
“Moving Worlds – Cinemas of Migration” is a film series on migration and integration and is the topic of a series of Film Screenings, Discussions and Workshops from May to November 2008. Feature films and documentaries from Austria, France, Germany, Israel, Scotland, Spain, United Kingdom and USA will be screened weekly.
The film screenings will be complemented by discussions and workshops.

The first part of the series will run from 22 May until 10 July 2008 with a screening every Thursday evening at 18:00. Part two will take place from 2 October 2008 until 20 November 2008.
The fifth film will be screened on 19 June 2008 at 18:00 in the Goethe Institut, 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. The title of the film is “Ghettokids” (Dir: Christan Wagner, Germany 2002, 88 min.).
Two young brothers and their family come to Germany from Greece and live in Munich on the fringe of society, committing petty thefts and other crimes. A new teacher in their school is pressured into leaving, but gives it all a second chance. She tries to help the brothers and their family with the assistance of the head of a social centre. The film ultimately shows the difficulty that foreign and poor citizens in Germany encounter when attempting to coexist or assimilate into society.
