Hi all!
Last week I thought about the type of events I write about every week and when you look at a a cross section of just a bit more than one month, it is really impressive what Dublin has to offer. Let’s face it, Dublin is quite small. Yes it is a capital, but if we keep the famous comparison in mind that Dublin is about the size of Manchester, then Dublin is really tiny in relative terms.
[ad]
Nevertheless, the city has a really great cultural and event life. Just a few weeks back we had the brilliant Culture Night where the City Centre was buzzing with life and activities and every body had a great time. Last week, we left the Culture aside and enjoyed the architecture of the City at Open House. Next week is Mathsweek and Innovation Dublin starts where another part of your intelligence is challenged and you can learn a HUGE amount of things in these next two weeks. After that we will enjoy the Bram Stoker Festival where literature is the focus. In addition (not free, but still interesting) the last two weeks the Theatre Festival took place and all is accompanied on a continual basis by lots of different sports events and all the music we have in Dublin. For children the Children’s Book Festival is taking place at the moment and then we will have Halloween.
Could anybody really say that Dublin has nothing to offer?
If you hear anybody saying that, tell them about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)! And get them to go to some of the events to sample the great offering. Get your friends and family and colleagues and neighbours to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide on www.dublineventguide.com The GMail problem that I mentioned last week has been fixed again, so you can view the full message in Gmail again. Keep telling everybody, we have to reach at least 13,013 readers to start 2013 in proper “13” style. :-)
And the weekly reminder: You can donate some money to help with the cost of sending the Dublin Event Guide and your help is needed to make sure that I can cover the EUR 170 that it costs every month. Just go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm
We are more than 10,500 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and are growing every week. Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
This week I have a simple quote again. It is one to “bring” with you into next week and should help you to decide on priorities and at the same time (once you have made decisions about priorities) it will help you to see the imprtance of what you do. The quote is:
“What I do today is important, because I am exchanging a day of my life for it!”

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Adrian P. and Anthony K were the wonderful people that get my THANKS and that should get your appreciation too because they have helped the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. All the support is much appreciated!!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need to “find” EUR 170 per month to cover the cost and anything above will be invested in improving the Dublin Event Guide!).
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
After Culture, Music and Art at Culture Night and Architecture at Open House, this week is the one where you can learn and expand your mind and maybe even challenge yourself a little. A HUGE amount of talks take place this week. Give it a go, try something that you might not do tooo often and go to a talk or lecture or seminar. Mathsweek ist taking place and Innovation Dublin
If that is absolutely not your thing or if you need some retail therapy first, have a look at all the markets. The Exchange Market and the HaPenny Flea Market take place on Saturday and the Fusion World Culture Market on Sunday.
So Market’s at the weekend and brain food during he week! That is my recommendation this week! :-)

Innovation Dublin
Innovation Dublin celebrates and showcases the Innovation and Crreativity that happens in Dublin. This is a very big umbrella! And consequently the the events are covering lots of aspects and areas of innovation. The Innovation Dublin week can appear a little daunting at first because you might think that only experts and specialists in their fields would be the ones understanding what is happening, but I suggest that you try few of the events and you will be surprised. Most things are a lot more interesting that we give them credit for, even the topics that initially sound complicated. So, have a look at the programme at www.innovationdublin.ie/festival/2012/ and see what you might find interesting.
|
Mathsweek
Another interesting event that many wouldn’t consider as attractive initially is the Mathsweek this week. I had a look through the list of events. Many are for students or school kids, but the ones that are for the general public all sound as if you definitely don’t have to be a Maths genius to enjoy it. So, have a look at this programme as well: www.mathsweek.ie/2012/events/events-in-dublin

Science Gallery 2013 Programme Launch
Most of you know that I am a big fan of the Science Gallery at Trinity College. I have been at nearly all exhibitions (there are at least four exhibitions per year) and have enjoyed every single one of them. All exhibitions are free and the work the Science Gallery around director Michael John Gorman does is outstanding.
Recently the Science Gallery added the Make Shop to their offering, a place where you can make, hack and create things for a very small fee and with Christmas coming up, you should have a look at the Science Gallery Shop, THE place to get science related quirky presents.
During the week I was invited to the launch of the Science Gallery Programme for 2013 and I have great news! Four really promising exhibitions are planned with “Illusion” and “Living Machines” being the two I look most forward to. Check out the pre-announcement at www.sciencegallery.com/2013
For the dedicated fans like me ;-), the Science Gallery has also a membership programme, which is EUR 30 per year, but if you are a student you can become a member for just EUR 5 per year at the moment. IF you are interested, have a look at www.sciencegallery.com/memberplus

Starbucks or Bewley’s – Are you confused?
Did you see the slight confusion caused by the Starbucks /Bewley’s “merger” in Westmoreland Street? Where formerly Bewley’s was, not toooo long ago Starbucks moved in. (Oddly directly across another Starbuck on the other side of the street!) However, the building still has lots of Bewley’s signs and a Bewley’s mosaic on the ground and the Starbucks sign is just the round sign with the mermaid in the window. Bewley’s didn’t like that and wanted to remove all Bewley references including the mosaic on the ground, but they were stopped – at least for a little while – because the removal requires planning permission. I can see Bewley’s point, but it would be a pity if the pretty mosaic will be removed. www.thejournal.ie/bewleys-westmoreland-street-starbucks-sign-631877-Oct2012/

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Cathair Projections and Exhibition
12-16 Oct (19:30-00:00) for Projections.
Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
‘CATHAIR’ is more than a word, the poet Ceaití Ní Bheildiúin finds as she explores the connection between city and ancient sites in Ireland. Using a litany of place names, chanted by the singer Rónán Ó Snodaigh, and the controlled performance of Zoe Uí Fhaoláin on screen, the poet’s multimedia installation merges visual images with verse to question our sense of place, of time and of belonging.
CATHAIR’s main exhibition is installed in THE BACK LOFT, an exhibition space on St. Augustine St., just off Cornmarket, in Dublin city centre from 15-21 Oct (12:00-19:00).
Outdoor projections for this installation are to be seen at night during the festival near City Hall, on Dame St., and on the screen at Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, during the exhibition. A further part of the installation will be at Exchange, on Exchange St., Temple Bar.

Writing Dublin Now – Panel Discussion
14:00, Sat 13 Oct
Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
This panel discussion is part of the Dublin Theatre Festival. It is curated by Dylan Haskins and admission is free. (Limited) Tickets will be available at the door.
“In recent years there has been a proliferation of new cultural, academic, business and political initiatives in Dublin, pointing the way to an alternative vision for our city. If we agree that a new Dublin is desirable, why have so many recent plays by Irish writers been concerned with histories of the city? Is it necessary to conclude certain histories before we can move forward? Or is the examination of these histories a more practical means of imagining a better future?”
The panel is
Vincent Woods (RTE Radio 1 Arts Tonight)
Fintan O’ Toole (The Irish Times)
Grace Dyas (THEATREclub)
Michael West (Corn Exchange)
Ali Grehan (Dublin City Architect and Pivot Dublin coordinator)
Louise Lowe (ANU productions – The Boys of Foley Street)

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 14 Oct
varies
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Bell’Italia, Music and Poetry
18:00, Sun 14 Oct
Sugar Club, 8 Lower Leeson Street, Dublin 2
A performance of poetry and music by actor-director Gerardo Placido in collaboration with the Teatro Emigrato and the Ascanti group will take place, which is part of the 12th Week of the Italian Language in the World “Italy of the Regions and Italy of the Future”.
“Gerardo Placido and the Ascanti group, together with some actors of the Teatro Emigrato, will take turns on the stage to present two regions of Italy: the region of Apulia is brought to the stage through its music: the unbridled and cheerful rhythms of the “pizziche”, the liberating melodies of the labourers’ songs, the passionate notes of the love songs of the lower Salento, the more sombre and pounding sounds of songs which recall the higher Salento, as well as through the words of Antonio Bello, whose original combinations create incisive images; the depth of their content goes beyond the words themselves.
Piedmonte is the other region brought to the attention of the public. The description of the places and countryside of this region is rooted in the intense poetry of Cesare Pavese.”

300 Years of Dublin Fire Brigade
18:30, Wed 17 Oct
Dolphin’s Barn Library, Parnell Road, Dublin 12
Las Fallon joined the Dublin Fire Brigade in 1985 and is currently based in Dolphin’s Barn Fire Station. He always had a strong
interest in history and volunteered his time as a curator of the Fire Brigade Museum in the O’Brien Institute (OBI) from 2008 – 2011.
He recently published a book titled ‘Dublin Fire Brigade and the Irish Revolution’. What emerges in this book is a picture of a strong republican influence among members of Dublin Fire Brigade at the time. For example, Las uncovered evidence that members of the Brigade were acting as an intelligence unit for the IRA during the War of independence and even smuggled IRA men out of the 1921 Custom House Fire in Fire Brigade uniforms.
Admission is free. Booking is recommended.

On Thursday afternoon I (and approx. 10 other digital media people) was invited to discuss “Digital Dublin” with the current Lord Mayor of Dublin Naoise Ó Muirí. I had some little challenges to make it there! Apart from my day job during Thursday, there was a problem with a website I look after that kept me awake until around 04:00 in the morning and on top of all that my car tyre had a puncture that needed to get repaired. A slightly chaotic day. And with all that I was hopelessly delayed.
The starting time for the event was 15:00 and I rushed in the door at Mansion House at 15:20 to find an EMPTY room!! I couldn’t believe it. Yes, after soooo many years in Dublin I still get caught out. ;-) But what I don’t get is how people think that through! You get an invitation during the day for a business-like meeting with the mayor and 10 other people. How come everybody was late (including me) and nobody was too late. So, how late is still on time? The mind boggles!
Searching for an answer on Google (Where else!?) I find a bible story about Lazarus who had died before Jesus arrived and it says “Four days late and still on time”. Is that maybe where people in Ireland take their inspiration from? www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+11&version=NIV

Germany playing against Ireland tonight. I am not really a football fan, but I guess for this game I have to take sides somehow. Well, let’s say “May the better team win!” ;-) …and even when that happens and you are Irish, don’t hold it against me! :-P

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
