Hi all!

Happy New Year!! May 2009 be better than 2008 despite all the current and upcoming challenges. And hopefully we will all see opportunities in these challenges instead of disaster and bad luck!
I read recently that an economic crisis is the time when INNOVATION and INITIATIVE are required. Governments can’t help with this, because they are trying to fire-fight and usually the talents of innovation and initiative are not the strongest talents of a political system anyway. As a result we all are required to become innovative and to take action and to stop waiting for our governments to “sort out” the problems. So don’t allow “bad” news about the economy or about jobs and redundancy to paralyse you, but think about how the news can be turned into something positive. Maybe it is the opportunity to realise a dream, to try a new professional avenue or to do something completely different that you always had in the back of your head!?

I know that many of you didn’t get a chance to read last week’s Event Guide because you were on holidays etc. I hope you had a good time! ;-) If you did read last week’s issue, forgive me for repeating myself this week. I want to include another time the appeal regarding the New Years Resolution, so that most of you have a chance to read about it even if you were on holidays:

Now that 2009 has arrived it is time to think of New Years Resolutions and while I am not the biggest fans of New Years Resolutions I would like to exchange some with you! Yes, I DO need to your help for it and I hope that you will pledge (means: promise firmly OR giving a binding commitment) your support by sending an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “New Year”.
Here is what I promise to do: I will do my best to continue providing you with the best possible “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” every week throughout 2009. I will work hard on improving the newsletter in layout and content and will (with your help) try to increase the subscriber figure to 5000 so that we can get even more organisers to run free events. I will organise more Event Guide meet-ups than in 2008 and will do what I can to facilitate a closer Event Guide Community for the people that are interested in that!
And here is what I want you to commit to in return: A few weeks ago, I was talking about doing Random Acts of Kindness to others on a regular basis and I am asking you to continue that! That’s all! Continue doing at least one Random Act of Kindness per week for the whole of 2009! A Random Act of Kindness is any act or word that makes someone feel good or puts a smile on someone’s face. It could be as simple as a “Thank you” and there are LOTS of possibilities to surprise someone with some kindness. If you need ideas or want to find out more about Random Acts of Kindness have a look here www.helpothers.org and here www.actsofkindness.org/ or here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_act_of_kindness. If the 2870+ strong Dublin Event Guide Community did just ONE single Random Act of Kindness per week, that would make 149 240 people smile!! Isn’t that worth it? The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius said “Waste no more time talking about great souls and how they should be. Become one yourself!” Send me a mail to confirm that you are taking part!!!

And please read this: This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E., Cliodhna D., Brian L., Padraig S., Kathie S., Orla niF, Jef B., Susanna N., Kate C., Nicola J., Claus Sch., Gordon and www.stickyfingerstravel.com, the travel guide for parents travelling with their children. The main sponsor is www.kravmagaireland.com, the self-defence training centre for everyone, which provides 12-week or 2-day self-defence training courses for beginners.
I am grateful for the support, but the sponsoring is still well below the cost, so YOUR support is NEEDED! Going to free events saves you a LOT of money. True? ;-) Knowing about these free events is the first HUGE step so that you then can decide if you want to go or not. True as well? This is at least worth 1 Euro per month? Do you agree? Can I count on your 12 Euro per year? Feel free to give more if you can, but please do consider the 12 Euro.
To contribute go to “http ://url . ie/v6z” and just remove the three Spaces in the web address (I have to write it like this, otherwise Spam Checkers complain about the url .ie address.) you then can donate using PayPal or your credit card!
Alternatively you can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation. This Event Guide is a hobby project and NOT a commercial enterprise, so I do need donations!

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Plans______________

Quite a number of readers asked me to provide a digested version of the week’s events from the long list of events in this newsletter. It is quite challenging to pick and choose, so to make it a little easier for me, I am describing in this section what _I_ intend to do in the coming week and maybe that helps you.

There are so few things happening this weekend, that I am sure you won’t need my help this week. ;-)

______Competition______________

ELVIS PRESLEY CHARITY SPECTACULAR
Elvis Presley would be 74 years of age on 11 Jan 2009 and to celebrate this day, the Elvis Presley Social Club will hold an “Elvis Birthday Charity Spectacular” at the Red Cow Inn in Naas Road, Dublin. The event will benefit the Senior Citizens of Bluebell Utd. AFC and the entertainment line-up includes:
* Kevin Doyle and The Way It Was Orchestra (Ireland’s premiere Elvis performer)
* Special guest from the USA – Joe Esposito (Elvis’ Tour Manager)
* Guest performance by Mary Lee Jones, Ireland’s Shirley Bassey and recent winner of TG4’s search for a Christmas No.1
* A Search for Ireland’s Elvis – Heat 1 (there are12 entries in already from all over Ireland and the winner will win a trip to Memphis in January 2010 to perform during the 75th birthday celebrations for Elvis in Memphis)
* DJ until late
The event is taking place on Sunday 11 Jan and starts at 16:00 with the “Search for Ireland’s Elvis”. (To enter the competition call John Kavanagh, the President of the Elvis Social Club on 087 2025022.)
John Kavanagh made TWO pairs of tickets available for this unique event (Thanks!) and if you are interested in winning the tickets, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject “Elvis 74″ (please don’t include the ” “). The mail has to be with me by 18:00 on Friday 09 Jan.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

SALES
I was quite disappointed to see a maximum of 75% discounts in the Sales after Christmas. Since we had seen 20% discount in most shops BEFORE Christmas, I was at least hoping for SOME 100%, or maybe even 120% discounts! ;-)
But seriously, if the expectations from the UK are anything to go by, then Grafton Street, Henry Street and Irish shopping centres will have to get used to closed and abandoned shops. www.breakingnews.ie/business/mhsncwgbeymh

IMMA CLOSING FOR RENOVATIONS
The Irish Museum of Modern Art will be closed for renovations from Monday 12 Jan to Mon 2 Feb 2009 inclusive. This is due to extensive upgrading work being carried out on the building’s electrical supply. The Museum’s café and bookshop will also remain closed.
Two of the current exhibitions, ‘In Praise of Shadows’ and ‘William McKeown’, will close on 4 Jan. The ongoing IMMA Collection exhibitions, ‘Exquisite Corpse’ and ‘Self as Selves’, will close on 11 Jan and reopen on 03 Feb. The new exhibition programme for 2009 will begin on 04 March with the opening of an exhibition of some 30 works by Hughie O’Donoghue. www.imma.ie

Only after this coming weekend normality will return as far as events and event announcements are concerned, so this weekend there is still only a very limited number of events, but from Monday the organisers will work on new events again.

______Saturday_________________

ARAS AN UACHTARAIN – GUIDED TOUR
The Irish President (Mary McAleese) lives with her family in “Áras an Uachtaráin” in Phoenix Park and – many don’t know this – a part of this residence can be viewed during a free guided tour every Saturday. Since there are not too many other events taking place this week, you could visit the residence of the Irish President.
Áras an Uachtaráin is open Saturdays only. Free admission tickets are issued at The Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day. Group and/or advance booking is not possible. The Phoenix Park Visitor Centre is just North of the entrance gate to Aras an Uachtarain. Guided Tours are taking place between 10:30-15:30 in Winter and will be for a duration of 60 minutes. More information is here www.president.ie/index.php?section=4&lang=eng and here www.heritageireland.ie/en/Dublin/PhoenixParkVisitorCentre-AshtownCastle/

IRELAND PALESTINE SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN – DEMONSTRATION
The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign has called a National Demonstration in solidarity with Gaza for this Sat 03 January. The protest will begin with speeches at 13:00 at the Central Bank Plaza, a march to the Dail (Kildare Street), the EU Offices (Molesworth Street), and a rally at the Spire on O’Connell Street will follow. The slogan we will be “Free Gaza: Stop the Slaughter! End the Siege!” www.ipsc.ie/
I know that the Gaza situation is hugely complex and some of you might be confused about who is right and who is wrong. On one hand the Hamas has attacked Israelian housing areas with rockets and it is no surprise that Israel is not just sitting there doing nothing. However, the international community is in agreement that Israel’s response to the Hamas attacks is not justified and that the killing of hundreds and injuring of thousands of Palestinian civilians through attacks by air and a possible ground invasion are not the appropriate means to deal with the rockets the Hamas has fired into Israel. For every Palestinian Israel is killing, I would expect that 10 other Palestinians are prepared to give their life to hurt Israel and that is certainly not a good start for de-escalation. In my opinion it is not acceptable that Palestinians continue to shoot rockets into Israelian housing areas, BUT there has to be another way to deal with that. So, I think the Palestinians in the Gaza strip do need our support!

MUSIC & GAMES FAIR – DUN LAOGHAIRE
This is not a free event, but at a price of EUR 3 at a weekend when not too many other things are taking place, I think it is ok to mention this event.
On Sat+Sun (03-04 Jan) from 10:30-18:30 the Music & Games Fair is taking place in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire. It is Ireland’s largest Music, CD & Record Fair and now Games are added to the mix. See exhibits from the big companies, distributors and collectors in all things gaming and musical. 100+ tables, dozens of exhibitors from all over Ireland & the U.K., a vast selection of music, video and games on all formats. www.cometrecords.eu

* The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2. www.supernatural.ie

CHILDRENS WORKSHOPS – PHOENIX PARK VISITOR CENTRE

The park landscape is dominated by grassland separated by clumps of trees, which may appear to be haphazardly grown; but which were planted to complement other aspects of the park. The children’s workshops combine art, nature awareness, history and heritage and are taking place at the Visitor Centre.

______Next Week_______________

———Monday————————–

CHRISTMAS IS NOT OVER!
Did you think Christmas is over? And that we now have to wait another 353 days until the next Christmas? Well, you are not completely right! In Spain and in parts of Latin America Epiphany is celebrated like our Christmas and the children get presents on the evening of the 05 Jan. The Three Wise Men are called “Reyes Magos” and in many parts of Spain there are processions on the 05 Jan where the Reyes Magos parade through the town and throw sweets at the children. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_Magi
In the Russian Orthodox Church, Christmas is celebrated on the 07 Jan (with Christmas Eve on the 06 Jan) because the Julian Calendar puts it 13 days after the Western Christmas. www.theholidayspot.com/christmas/worldxmas/russia.htm

REGULAR MONDAY EVENTS
* Pint&Picture or Cine Café. From 19:30 Howard Linnane is screening short films and full-length films in his fortnightly alternating movie event in the Portobello Pub in South Richmond Street. Ring Howard (086-3614787) for more information. The film screenings are free.
* From 21:30 in the International Bar, Wicklow Street: An acoustic singer-songwriter session hosted by Jacqueline Tuck. Entry is free. The music styles vary from pop to folk to traditional. www.myspace.com/jacquelinetuck

———Tuesday————————

LITTLE CHRISTMAS AND REYES MAGOS
Today is the fest of “Reyes Magos” in Spain and the children got their presents last night. But not only Spain gives this day a special meaning, in Ireland it has an important role as well. Here it is called “Little Christmas” or “Women’s Christmas”. It is so called because of the tradition in some parts of Ireland of Irish men taking on all the household duties for the day and giving their spouses a day off. Women will either hold parties or go out to celebrate the day with their friends, sisters, mothers, aunts etc. I am sure you can imagine that this concept only works in a minority of Irish households. ;-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Christmas

REGULAR TUESDAY EVENTS
* In the Bankers Inn on Trinity Street (off Dame Street) at 21:30: An acoustic singer-songwriter session hosted by Dave Murphy. A contribution is requested but not required. This is a listening club so is very quiet and features a lot of experienced songwriters trying out new material. www.myspace.com/davemurphyandfriends

Speakers are Dr. Gerard Quinn (Director, Centre for Disability Law and Policy, NUI Galway School of Law) and Donal Toolan (Disability Rights Activist). The event will be chaired by Fergus Finlay (CEO of Barnardos). www.comhlamh.org

CLIMATE CHANGE LECTURE – UCD EARTH SYSTEMS INSTITUTE
The UCD Earth Systems Institute in collaboration with Comhar Sustainable Development Council, Environmental Protection Agency, Forfás, Geological Survey of Ireland, Met Eireann, Sustainable Energy Ireland, Teagasc is inviting to a weekly seminar focusing on bringing the science and policy of climate change to key stakeholders in the Irish Policy system, including the general public.
The next public lecture will take place on Fri 09 Jan from 12:30-13:30 in The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2 (www.numbersix.ie/site/910/default.aspx). The topic is “How fast can climate change? Evidence from the past.” – And the description is “The world’s climate is entering into a period of change described as abrupt (Intergovernmental panel on climate change, 2007). Unfortunately, we have very few ways of measuring what kind of abrupt change might occur. One source of evidence is past (also called palaeo) climate, covering a period of time long before weather stations were used, or even invented. The reason we can study this period is because plants, animals, and all sorts of chemicals have recorded the climate for us. When we dig up these so-called climate proxies to look back, we see horrifying jumps in climate well beyond that predicted by the most advanced computer models currently used. This talk will look at how we reconstruct past climate from proxies and how we try and make honest judgements about climate change taking account of the uncertainty in the measurements we have. We will focus on two sites within Ireland and discuss the implications for Ireland as a whole.” www.ucd.ie/earth

OUT TO LUNCH READING – IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE
On Fri 09 Jan the “Out to Lunch” Series of the Irish Writers’ Centre will continue with a reading by poet Patrick Stack. The event is hosted by John McNamee and will take place from 13:15-14:00 in the Irish Writers’ Centre, 19 Parnell Square, Dublin 1. Admission is free. writerscentre.ie/

———Pre-Announcements————————

SKETCHCRAWL
‘Sketchcrawl’ is an international event, which sees artists all over the world gathering in their respective cities on one specific day and ‘crawling’ around, drawing/painting whatever they see. The results are then posted on the internet, with the result being that we have a ‘snapshot’ of the world on one specific day through the eyes of the artistic natives! Therese Ryan informed me about this event and about the fact that there is an Irish offspring of it in Dublin too:
All artists, whether pro or amateur, are invited to meet at the Spire in O’Connell Street on Sat 10 Jan at 11:00. The crawl will take the participants from the Spire to the Liffey, then into Trinity College, then St. Stephen’s Green, down Dame St and around Temple Bar. Crossing Ha’penny Bridge, the Italian quarter will be visited, before heading to Phoenix Park. Then the crawl goes back to O’Connell Bridge and it will finish at around 15:00 with a pint in Messrs Maguire (near O’Connell Bridge).    ANYONE is invited, regardless of talent and all is free (but you have to bring your own material).  Just be sure to have your sketchbooks out so that you can be recognised.
For more information go to www.sketchcrawl.com, with the Dublin entry being here www.sketchcrawl.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=3400 or www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=37288283143.

MATHS AND THE SALES
Maths is a nuisance, isn’t it? Especially solving complicated equations can do your head in, don’t you think? Luckily, for the REALLY complicated stuff, we have our fancy mobile phones with their calculators.
I witnessed such a head-wrecking situation in BT2 during the Sales last week. A (physically) VERY well trained guy was standing next to me, holding some Jeans up. The original price was EUR 100 and the discount was 40%. Complicated stuff, I know!!
Well, the guy was definitely smart, because he remembered that for situations like that you bring your mobile phone (and you don’t always have to “phone a friend” or “ask the audience”). He whipped the phone out of his pocket, typed swiftly in “100-40%=…” and the day was saved.:-) Thank god for mobile phones!!
And if you don’t have a fancy mobile phone, maybe check this before you go to the shops: www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/math99/math99056.htm

—————–
Normality will after the Christmas Season will be back from Monday and then slowly the number of events increase again. Let’s look forward to an “Event-full” 2009.

Enjoy the weekend!

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it. If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, let me know by e-mail and I will make sure that you will be taken off the list for as long as you want.  This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby. However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) and if you want to help me with the running of it (no minimum amount!) just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the word “Donation” in the subject and I will reply with a link that will allow you to make your donation by PayPal or per credit card or follow the link just above this section. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible, please contact me for more information.
