Hi all!
You can probably imagine that I talk about events quite a bit when I meet people socially. Not in a way that I have nothing else to talk about ;-) , but events or the Dublin Event Guide usually come up at some stage in the chat. And usually there is the question “What next big event is coming up?” or “Which Event do you like the most?”
[ad]
And there is one thing that ALWAYS surprises me: It amazes me how many people never heard of the Street Performance World Championship, one of the best and most popular festivals in Dublin! Have YOU heard about it? (If you are a longterm reader of the Dublin Event Guide, I am sure …or at least HOPE…. you have.) It is an absolutely outstanding festival in Merrion Square where the best Street Performers from all over the world perform for you. If you ever have laughed at or with a Street Performer anywhere in the world on holidays or otherwise, you will find even better performances in Merrion Square.
Maybe you are wondering now if the Street Performance Festival 2012 takes place this weekend or why else I am talking about it!? The reason why I mention it today is because this super festival takes place NEXT weekend (20-22 July) and that means there is one more week to tell your friends, family and work colleagues about it. So, take the opportunity in the coming week to ask people “Hey, do you know that the Street Performance World Championship is taking place from 20-22 July?” and if they say “No”, or “What’s that” or “Never heard about it”, then a) tell them about it and b) tell them that they have to subscribe to the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” as soon as possible, so that they will not miss out on all these great events in Dublin anymore! :-)
Everybody can easily subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or on the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and people can (and should) also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on the Facebook Page. So, tell the world and next week, I will tell you some insider tips about the Street Performance World Championship!!
BTW: There are still a few little issues to iron out with the new pretty format of this newsletter. Last week I messed up the formatting a little bit. Forgive me if not everything is perfect yet. I am getting better every week…I hope! :-)
We are more than 9000 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide With your help, we will make it to 10,000 in no time! Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
You might or might not know the children’s book Winnie the Pooh, which was created by A.A. Milne in 1926 and was later used by Disney for a series of features. The book and the dialogues in it are suprisingly and unexpectedly deep and philosophical. I didn’t grow up with Winnie the Pooh and only discovered the book later (and am still dicovering it :-) ). A friend of mine posted something in Facebook this week and I thought it is perfect for the Feel Good Slot today. It is a dialogue between the Pooh and the Piglet: “What day is it?” asked Pooh. – “It’s today,” squeaked Piglet. – “My favorite day,” said Pooh.”
May all your Today’s be your favourite and if you want to share it with friends you can find it on my Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/Joerg.Steegmueller

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Susan B, Rainey D-G, Johan S were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide by supporting it with a donation. Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter has more than doubled and I need your help! Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm and help!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).
I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)
BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal/CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
The Dublin City of Science event series will continue until Sunday and PhotoIreland is continuing until the end of the month. In addition there are lots of new events taking place this week (more than 130 again!).
I plan to go to the Mini Maker Faire in the Science Gallery on Saturday. Checout Sugur and the talk about the Jane, who invented it. It is amazing stuff! Then there is the Print Museum Demonstration Day, an interesting event to udnerstand this outdated concept of information being printed on paper. :-) The Bray Summer Fest and the ISAF YOurh Sailing Championship are on as well and both offer a set of interesting events. I will probably go to the Graff House Live Street Art Show a little later.
On Sunday the Hippy Day at Brocante Market sounds interesting and the Temple Bar Beatles Festival this whle weekend is tempting.
Durin next week there are three interesting gigs in Whelan’s: The Bambir on Tuesday, Toot Sweet on Wednesday and Moo on Thursday. Try them out!
More on Tuesday: Saturn Watch with Astronomy Ireland and the new Grand Folk Club in the Grand Social. In Wednesday the Sudan Refugee Crisis event interests me, hopefully I can make it.
After Wednesday I need to write the next Dublin Event Guide and need to gather energy for a VERY busy next weekend. It will probably be the busiest weekend of the summer and unfortunately lots of events are all coming together, but there is definitely something for everybody.

Taxi App – checking honesty of Taxi Driver – launched
A new iPhone app called “TaxiFair” (EUR 0.79) has been launched for Dublin and London by iOS Developer Kevin Fagan (tinktank.ie/). The app works like a taximeter by measuring distance and time and calculating the fare the taxi should charge. In addition it records the route the taxi driver did take. Interesting application, if you are concerned about or have experienced dodgy taxi drivers. Pity that the app is only available for iPhone, though. www.thejournal.ie/app-for-taxi-customers-monitors-route-and-average-fare-516907-Jul2012/

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.
The first to mention here is the Dublin Sketchers exhibition and I have listed it in the main event section for the respective days. Check out Saturday and Sunday!

Photographic Exhibition: The Cherry Blossom
18 Jul – 01 Aug: 10:00-17:00
National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
Doreen Kennedy is a visual artist living and working in Dublin, who works with lens-based media including photography, photo based installations, photomontage and film. This exhibition pays homage to the Cherry Blossom tree and the transience of their blossoms. In Japan, cherry blossoms symbolise clouds, due to their nature of blooming en masse.
Awareness of the transience of all things heightens appreciation of their beauty and evokes a gentle sadness at their passing. Working from this theme, this series of images shows portraits of cherry blossom trees, the short cycle of their blossoms with details of their flowers and images of their fallen petals. www.botanicgardens.ie/news/events.htm

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 14 Jul
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 15 Jul
varies
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

South Sudan Refugee Crisis – MSF Ireland Information Evening and Exhibition
18:30 – 20:00, Wed 18 Jul
Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2
July 2012 marks the one-year anniversary of the birth of South Sudan. But the situation in this newly independent state is not good, with 120,000 people who fled border areas in the past year now living in nightmare conditions in crowded refugee camps. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the world’s leading medical humanitarian organisation, has been active in South Sudan since 1979 and Jane-Ann McKenna, head of the MSF Ireland office, has been in the country for the past three weeks, working in refugee camps there.
On Wed MSF Ireland will host an exhibition of images from the refugee camps in South Sudan at the Royal Irish Academy. The photographs, which were taken in recent weeks by a number of different photographers, depict day-to-day scenes from the camps and capture the emergency medical aid being provided by MSF teams.
Jane-Ann McKenna, who will have just returned to Ireland, will be available to talk to visitors to the exhibition about her experiences in South Sudan.
Admission is free. Donations for the South Sudan Emergency Appeal ( www.msf.ie/south-sudan-appeal ) will be accepted.

Xavier Mina and other Irish, between Spain and Mexico, via Cork
18:00, Thu 19 Jul
Embajada de México, 19 Raglan Road, Dublin 4
Manuel Ortuno was a Professor at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) of the city of Mexico. Following his retirement he has researched the subject of relations between Spain and Mexico through the figure of Xavier Mina during the past few years. Mina was a Spanish army officer and guerilla fighter who took part in the Mexican war of independence.
Admission to this lecture is free. It is not specified, but I would expect it is in Spanish.

Tour de France in Irish?! WHY?
The Tour de France is on at the moment. Not as popular as Euro 2012 or the Olympics in a few weeks and with its fair share of scandals over the years (Was Lance Armstrong as clean as he claims or as dodgy as everybody else thinks?) For a number of reasons, I always had a light interest in the Tour de France. But what is it about Irish Speakers? Are they all Tour de France mad??? Or why else is TG4 showing every minute of the Tour on TG4 and are commenting the whole thing in Irish only? They show 21 days of up to 7 hours live Tour de France broadcast on each day for less than 2500 viewers (calculations for the interested: further down). For no apparent reason the commentary for the whole 7 hours is in Irish without any subtitles. Can anybody explain to me WHY? Is this maybe a slightly cynical trick of TG4 to bump up their “Irish content”? Is there maybe a minimum of TG4 broadcast hours in Irish that easily can be achieved by up to 147 hours of Tour de France commentary in Irish? Odd!!
www.tg4.ie/en/programmes/le-tour-de-france.html
o-o-o-o-o-
My calculations: 3% of the Irish population (4,581,296 people) say they prefer Irish to English as it is their main community and household language. That is a total of 137,000 people. About a quarter of the Irish population is below 15, so about a quarter of the 137,000 is below 15. That leaves around 103,000. Let’s assume about 50% are working throughout the day, that leaves about 50,000 Irish speakers at home during the day. Of these maybe 5% (at max!) are Tour de France fans and have nothing else to do from 10:00-17:00 than to watch the Tour de France. That is 2,500 people. And you probably agree that this figure is vastly over exaggerated. So for not more than 2500 people TG4 is sending up to 7 hours of Tour de France for 21 days (maybe they don’t show EVERY day, I didn’t get a chance to check, but they show MOST days).

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
