Hi all!
Free events in Dublin come in all shapes and forms and if you are a longterm Dublin Event Guide reader, you know that there are festivals, gigs/concerts, talks/lectures, exhibitions, book launches, markets, film screenings, openings, promo events, museum events and even protest marches.
Every week I find between 120 and 150 events and include them in this e-zine. I include all cultural (in a lose-ish meaning) events that I can find, but some event organisers are very secretive about their events and seemingly don’t want to tell anybody, which means I can’t tell you.
About 15% of the event information is sent to me by e-mail, the rest I research every Thursday night by searching through approx. 400 webpages. It takes me hours and hours to check all the websites and webpages and if anybody was interested, I could give seminars and training courses about how to make it easy to find all required information and how to really make it difficult for your customers.
In general, the websites I come across are pretty poor in usability. Most look quite pretty, but last week it took me more than 45 minutes of searching on an event organisers site and then on other sites before I was able to find out if an event is free or not. It was NOT free, so as far as the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” is concerned, the 45 minutes were wasted and you wonder why an event organisers is trying so hard to hide the fact that they will charge some admission fee.
[ad]
No matter if you go to free or non-free events, a good event organiser has nothing to hide and is happy to tell you straight away how much admission is, if you can’t find it easily, consider staying away. There is a high risk that the event will disappoint you as well if not even the basic information is made available in a simple way.
The intention of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” is exactly that: Provide you with a simple straight forward way to find out about he free events in Dublin so that you find the events and the (good) event organisers find an appreciative audience.
If you like that approach, tell your friends (They can subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com) and consider helping with a donation (www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm). And also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide on the Facebook Page www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide. In today’s world appreciation is measured in Facebook-LIKES! :-)
We are more than 8900 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide With your help, we will make it to 10,000 in no time! Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
After a rather wet June, not the rosiest economic outlook and challenges not only for Ulster Bank customers, today I have just a simple quote for you to ponder about:
Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about learning to dance in the rain. – Anonymous

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week William C, Pilar G, Susan D and Gordon S. were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide by supporting it with a donation. Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter has more than doubled and I need your help! Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm and help!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).
I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)
BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal/CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
What a busy week! With the Dublin City of Science Events this week filling the calender and with photo exhibitions, UCD Imagine Science Film Festival and lots and lots of other events, this week’s Dublin Event Guide lists more than 160 events! Every single one is free and now you have to choose which ones you want to go to.
I find it difficult to make a decision this week, but let me try:
Tonight I might go to Bray if the rain stops to listen to Buck Taylor at the Bray Summer Fest and if the weather is half-way ok, you should definitely go to Bray for the Ryan Sheridan gig tomorrow. Great high-energy music! I love it! Tomorrow during the day I will look out for the Busking Physics performance in Grafton Street.
On Sunday the Fusion Sunday World Market is on my schedule and maybe in the afternoon the Swing Picnic. If you have children make sure you don’t miss the IFI Animation Trail this weekend.
Next week is full of Dublin City of Science events and I will try to catch one or two. The week is filled with children events, so especially for parents there should be great entertainment opportunities … for the kids. :-)
If you are interested in Oceans and all that has to do with it, check out the events in Dun Laoghaire in connection with the expedition ship “Tara”. And if you are otherwise interested in all kinds of Science, check out the Alchemist Aperitif events.
Maxim – Peace Pilgrim
I had planned to put it in the Dublin News, but there is no space left. ;-) Next week, probably around 11 or 12 July Maxim, who is on a peace day pilgrimage will come to Dublin. He is on his way of 1200 km around Ireland and UK and the intention is to raise awareness for the UN International Peace Day on 21 September. He spends 3 months on his walk and has zero money with him. So if you encounter him anywhere and you feel he deserves a hand, maybe buy him some food or a coffee and if you want to follow his path, check it out here www.facebook.com/PeaceDayPilgrim and www.facebook.com/PeaceDayPilgrim

Dublin City of Science Festival
From 06-15 July the Science week as part of the Dublin City of Science programme will take place. 60 events over 10 days will look at science, art and lots more in between. Where possible I will list the free evens as separate events during the week. The reason for Dublin calling itself “Dublin City of Science is because the Euroscience Open Forum 2012 is taking place from 11-15 July in the Convention Centre in Dublin.
If you want an overview of all activities, go to the website at www.dublinscience2012.ie but be prepared, again it is not easy to find things. In this case the organisers have spent a lot of effort and cost in compiling a pretty and comprehensive booklet at www.dublinscience2012.ie/programme-book/ but the issuu viewer that is used for it is a pain to use on the go and the feature of allowing downloads of the booklet on the issuu platform has been explicitly turned off. That is a big FAIL for the Dublin City of Science organisers. I asked them last week if they would allow the download of the booklet and the question was duly deleted and ignored. :-(

10 Days in Dublin
The 10 Days in Dublin Festival will take place from 05-14 July. It is a very interesting festival with lots of events. 10 Days in Dublin is a multidisciplinary, open-format, arts festival and includes all types of art or performance: music, comedy, theatre, film, painting, sculpture, etc. This year there will be over 95 acts across more than 25 venues.
I was looking for free events and found two, after that I gave up. Because if you are looking for a straight forward list of events, maybe sorted by day or by cost, you won’t be thrilled. A simple downloadable programme in PDF would have solved the problem. The website is fancy, but I am sure you understand that I won’t search through 95 events to find maybe one more free events. Ticket prices at 10 Days in Dublin are relatively moderate at EUR 5- EUR 10. 10daysindublin.ie/

Cough and Cold-related study – Parents with children Age 2-6 needed
Every now and then I get a request from an Event Guide Reader to help with a study. This is such a request and maybe YOU can help. I included this notice alreadylast week, but the link I had at the time didn’t work, so this week the link is working!
Do you have children that sometimes suffer with the symptoms of a cough or cold? As a parent you know it is important to take the time to learn what can be done to ease those symptoms appropriately. A new project at NUIG is hoping to establish if online education systems may be delivered effectively to help parents. Busy parents can simply log on and learn how a cold can be managed effectively. The programme layout is easy to use and does not take long for busy individuals who would like to log on and learn more about these everyday symptoms in their child.
But before something like that can be implemented/launched, some research is needed. If you are a parent with children aged 2-6 years of age, you are needed.
You will be in with the chance to win one a prize worth EUR 100 in return for your participation in this study. The programme offers parents the opportunity to access information relating to the treatment of coughs and colds in their young children. It will focus on dispelling myths relating to treatments and instruction in how to cope with a sick child. The overall aim of the session is to inform and help parents. If you would like to participate or find out more about the study, follow this link: www.surveymonkey.com/s/medicine_and_children

PhotoIreland Festival 2012
I have to admit that I find it difficult to describe this festival and that I spent hours procrastinating over writing this description. PhotoIreland is a photo exhibitio, but not one, no it consists of over 100 exhibitions and events in more than 40 venues around Dublin. There are more than 200 participating photographers, curators and publishers and this is the 3rd PhotoIreland Festival. The theme this year is ‘Migrations: Diaspora & Cultural Identity’. The festival will run from 01-31 July and I expect that I will not be able to list to omany events here, there are just too many. So, instead I will send you to their website and will ask you to check it your yourself: 2012.photoireland.org

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 11,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.
The first to mention here is the Dublin Sketchers exhibition and I have listed it in the main event section for the respective days. Check out Saturday and Sunday!

To the rear of the Convention Centre Dublin, Number 5 (Corner Unit), Spencer Dock, Mayor Street Upper, Dublin 1

The exhibition presents forty pictures conveying some of the unusual, still and pure atmosphere in the areas explored during the journey of the yacht Tara. The black and white images reinforce the impression of eternity in landscapes where the mad rush of time seems to have stopped. Vincent Hilaire, the photographer on Tara, took all pictures. Tara Oceans – A worldwide Portrait of Marine Plankton
07 July – 03 August
East Pier, Battery, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
Tara Oceans Expedition is the very first attempt to make a global study of marine plankton. Studying plankton is like taking the pulse of our planet. Recently, scientists have discovered the great importance of plankton for the climate. In a context of rapid physico-chemical changes, it is urgent to understand and predict the evolution of these particular ecosystems.
On 31st of March 2012, the schooner Tara, equipped with new technology for sampling the entire plankton communities from viruses to animals, and benthic diversity in coral reef ecosystems came back to its home port, Lorient, France. After 115 000km, ~27,800 biological samples, 100 scientists, 50 countries crossed in 2.5 years.
This unique exhibition on the East Pier of Dun Laoghaire Harbour will present a worldwide view of marine plankton. Every image has been taken onboard Tara during the Tara Oceans Expedition from 2009 to 2012 by one of the team headed by Dr Emmanuel G. Reynaud, imaging coordinator and SFI/Stokes Lecturer based in University College Dublin. www.dublinscience2012.ie/2012/07/tara-oceans-a-worldwide-portrait-of-marine-plankton/

Disparate Geometry – Monster Truck Gallery
06-28 July: Tues-Sat 12:00-18:00
Monster Truck Gallery, 4 Temple Bar, Dublin 2
For this year’s PhotoIreland festival, Monster Truck presents an exhibition featuring two Irish artists living and working in Britain: Suzanne Mooney & Mark McCullough. Both produce conceptual, lens-based works, which, while abstract, concern ideas of representation: McCullough by combining motifs and visual phrases from draughtsmanship and geometry to provide an alternation between design and result; Mooney, by taking pre-existing materials and products and collapsing them to unsettle dimensional pre-conceptions. monstertruck.ie/blog/?page_id=7177

Unique to Dublin??
09:00, Sat 07 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
I found a website and facebook page that told me that on 07+08 July Dublin will celebrate its diverse range of independent businesses with the event “Unique to Dublin”. “Something for everyone” was promised and street entertainment was also mentioned. But neither the website nor the facebook page revealed more than that. Did this initiative by Dublin City BID maybe never make it off the ground? Or is it meant to be top secret? Well, if you see any street perfomers and get some special offers this Saturday and Sunday, enjoy. And if you don’t, then “Unique to Dublin” was maybe still born. www.uniquetodublin.ie/ and www.facebook.com/UniquetoDublin

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 07 Jul
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the third year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From June until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com invites to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based. All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 08 Jul
varies
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Leaving Ireland – Exhibition Talk
15:00, Tue 10 Jul
National Photographic Archive, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
From 6-22 July, the National Photographic Archive will show the work of David Monahan and of Maurice Gunning in an exhibition entitled Living-Leaving. David Monahan will give a talk on his exhibition Leaving Ireland which is a series of portrait studies of nationals and non-nationals about to migrate from Dublin. These photographs have been widely reviewed, and were virtually exhibited as projections in thirteen international venues last St Patrick’s Day. Admission is free.
The above description is copied from the National Libraries website and I will resist ranting about the inacceptable and nonsensical use of the terms “nationals” and “non-nationals”, but please note that these terms should be replaced in the vocabulary with “Irish” and “non-Irish” people.

Slideluck Potshow is a chance for artists and arts-appreciators to gather around food, drink and art in a diverse, congenial, and non-competitive atmosphere. Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
This week I had planned to write in the “This is Odd!” section about someting else again than about Irish Politics. But it is just amazing how reliable the oddnesses (and this is a big understatement) of politicians and politics in Ireland occur.
E-Voting Machine Fiasco
Noel Dempsey and Marin Cullen, two former ministers who belong together with Bertie Ahern and a good few more in the “Hall of Un-Fame” of Irish History, are to be blamed for the scandalous purchase of 7,500 unreliable and untrustworthy voting machines in Ireland. The machines were bought in 2002 for more than EUR 54mio, were never used and have now been sold as scrap for EUR 70,000. www.independent.ie/national-news/54m-voting-machines-scrapped-for-9-each-3153437.html Many thought this is the final end of this sorry saga, but there is more to it. One further chapter is that one of the storage places that already cost a huge amount over the last 10 years in rent has a contract for another 17 (!!) years for about EUR 20,000 every year.
But that is still not all: The company that bought the machines for EUR 9 each offered up to approx. 100 of them to museums, research and other interested parties for EUR 100 and the money raised would have gone to the children charity in Barretstown. 131 people were interested, which would have raised EUR 13,100 for a very worthy charity. But it won’t happen! The government told the buyer of the useless machines that they have to destroy them completely. The contract says that the machines must be “irreversibly disassembled and put entirely beyond functional use”. Did the smart people in our current government realise that the machines were always “beyond functional use”? Interestingly it was never planned to sell them intact anyway, but it was planned to sell them without any electronics in them. Still, the Department of Environment will not allow it! Shame on our politicians and bureaucrats! www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2012/0703/1224319266651.html

Ahh no, what is happening out there? It is summer and my sunflowers on the balcony need SUN and WARMTH to grow. If the weather doesn’t get better, we all need webbed feet (feet like ducks, in case you have never heard the word “webbed”) and my sunflowers? Luckily there is not tooo many outdoor events his week and with the different exhibitions and events for the City of Science and the Photographic Exhibitions, at least we can do lots of things indoor. And now quickly go back to the Feel Good Slot and remind yourself of what message I chose there this week. :-)
Have an event-ful weekend,

Take care,

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
