Hi all!
Are you happy to hear from me again? ;-) I hope so! Another week is over and we are getting closer and closer to Christmas. Christmas?? … I hear you saying? Well, believe it or not, Christmas is starting THIS weekend if you listen to the Dublin City traders (i.e. shops)! The Christmas lights in Dublin will be switched on this Sunday! In Dundrum Shopping Centre it already started last weekend, but they are a little crazy out there anyway. In my opinion Christmas decoration should not be up until the 1st of December. I LOVE Christmas, but the magic of Christmas is partially based on its “limited availability” and if the “Christmas period” is continually extended it will just not be the same anymore. Luckily there are a few shops and traders that agree with this: The good people in Temple Bar will not switch their Christmas lights on until 27 Nov. This is a lot better than Dublin City (08 Nov) or Dundrum Shopping Centre (02 Nov!!!). The traders in Grafton Street seem to expect additional business from longer burning Christmas lights! Not sure where the connection is there. Do you buy more because Grafton Street is illuminated? I don’t!
By the way, there is ONE aspect that will make me accept a longer “Christmas period” without complaining: If the Christmas decoration and the lights make people friendlier with each other and if it leads to more smiling and happiness, THEN I would even in favour of switching on the lights in October. :-)
You can help! ;-) How about making an effort of saying something nice to a person in the bus, in work, in a shop or restaurant or to your partner, flatmate, parent, brother/sister or friend? If you try to say ONE unexpected appreciative thing every day until Christmas, you have done so much good, that I will lobby Santa for an extra big Christmas present for you! Give it a try, it is fun to surprise people with good things. ;-) Ohhh, and remember this type of present is recession proof! It doesn’t cost a cent!

The Event Guide is getting longer and longer and I need your help in deciding how to continue: I have two options. Either I continue to include all events I come across OR I leave out events. _I_ would prefer not to “censor” anything but with more people feeding me information, it will probably grow and grow and once it has the size of the phone book…. ;-).
I know that the newsletter is very difficult to read because it is so long and all I can suggest is that you use the section headlines for the day and then the headlines in Capital letters to filter and only read what interests you or when you have time.
It has been suggested to me by a few people that I include my own recommendations in a paragraph here and I might do that to help you pre-select a bit. I tried it this week: Scroll to the very bottom and look for the section “JOERG’S PLANS”. ;-)
Please let me know your opinions (dublineventguide@gmail.com) but PLEASE keep in mind that I write the Event Guide in my spare time and don’t make money with it so I have don’t have an unlimited amount of time and hugely complicated formatting (for example) will UNFORTUNATELY not be do-able.
This week is the first time this newsletter is sent in HTML format. There are NO added features yet and the formatting is not any nicer. Bear with me! I will try to add new layout features in the coming weeks. I am taking small steps initially.
The downside of sending it in HTML format is that I expect that even more of you will be “protected” from my Event Guide by your Spam Filters. If you find this mail in your Spam Filter, please add the address dublineventguide@gmail.com to your address book in your e-mail system (Hotmail or Gmail or Yahoo, …).
Please note: This Event Guide is sponsored by Esme E., Cliodhna D., Brian L., Padraig S., Kathie S., Orla niF, Jef B. and www.stickyfingerstravel.com. The main sponsor is www.kravmagaireland.com, the self-defense training centre for everyone, which provides 12-week or 2-day self-defence training courses for beginners. I am grateful for the support! – If you think this Event Guide is useful to you and saves you money, please consider a donation too. If you want to help, please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “Donation” in the subject and I will reply to you with a link to the PayPal website where you can donate via PayPal or Credit Card. This is the link: url.ie/v6z if you want to donate directly. ;-) Alternatively you can contact me to arrange another route for your donation. This Event Guide is a hobby project and NOT a commercial enterprise, so I do rely on donations.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges or at least appear to be free unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no guarantee for correctness can be given.

______Competition______________
KETOLOCO IN IRELAND – TICKET COMPETITION
A very last minute competition proposal that reached me today came from Danny Ketoloco: The team of Techno rebels around Danny that organises regular parties in
Leeds’ BacktoBasics, London’s ‘The Egg’ and Ibiza’s ‘Zoo Project’ is coming to The ThinkTank in 24 Eustace Street in Temple Bar (opposite the IFI and next to the Mezz) for one night only. They describe the event like this “Join the Leeds techno rebels in Dublin’s most historic club venue for one night only. Expect slices of edgy house and intricate tech. Supplying the said sounds alongside the usual ‘loco ressies are some fine electronic representatives: Dublin’s own local hero DONNACHA COSTELLO, and Glasgow’s CRAIG TORRANCE. You know the script by now: confabulated surrealism both music and behaviour wise, all dripping in glamour and excess.” Lots more detail can be found here www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=45706604104 and the individual contributors have a lot more to say here
KETOLOCO DJs: www.myspace.com/keto_loco
Donnacha Costello: www.myspace.com/donnachacostello
Craig Torrance: www.myspace.com/craigtorrancedj
Venue www.myspace.com/thethinktankdublin or www.thethinktank.ie
Ketoloco and friends will be in Ireland on Thurs 13 Nov from 22:00 and Admission is EUR 8 before 23:00 and EUR 10 after.
To win tickets (I have TWO pairs!) to this House / Electro / Minimal Techno event, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject “Ketoloco” and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. The mail has to be with me at 13:00 on Monday 10 November. So hurry!
COWBOYS AND ANGELS – MAKEUP VOUCHER COMPETITION
I didn’t know what I would cause with this competition! My Inbox has been flooded with entries. However, I am not complaining, instead I am glad that you like it. You have ONE more chance to get your entry in (two entries does NOT increase youc chances though!)
Valerie and Sheila from “Cowboys and Angels” are offering you a brilliant prize!
“Cowboys and Angels” is THE salon in Dublin for cuts, colours, upstyles and extensions. Valerie, Sheila and their team also provide a full makeup and makeover service and are happy to travel for weddings. Cowboys and Angels is on South William Street (2 minutes from Grafton Street) and will be opening on Sundays coming up to the festive season. Do you want to look gorgeous at this special party you have coming up? Then book yourself in for a makeup and an upstyle!
To promote their great makeup and upstyle party offer, Cowboys and Angels are giving you the chance to win a voucher for a makeup for 100 Euro!! Isn’t that a brilliant and generous price? To contact Cowboys and Angels just call 01-6797654 and you can find out more as well on www.cowboys-and-angels.ie/. If you want to win the makeup voucher, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Cowboys and Angels” and your name and phone number in the body of the mail. The mail has to be with me by 15:00 on the 12 November. (There are a few terms and conditions coming with the voucher, but there are no sneaky ones! ;-) ) Guys, you can enter the competition as well, but since a 100 Euro make-up probably doesn’t suit you too well, I expect you to pass the voucher on to a woman in your life (friend, girl-friend/wife, mother, etc.)
BANGHRA – SPANISH LATIN POP ROCK + MORE
Raffael Abarca who organises and promotes concerts and events often with a latin tint and who has provided tickets for competitions from very early on in the Event Guide’s history is organising an interesting event again:
Banghra, a Spanish Latin/Pop/Rock/R&B/Funky Hindu act will perform on 14 Nov from 23:00 in The Academy (57 Middle Abbey St. Dublin) and Raffael has made a pair of tickets available.
With impressive album sales and devoted fans around Spain, Banghra show off everything that make them one of Spain’s most sensational live entertainment acts – not just Latin-Hindu music, but also a dance show full of energy and excitement! A fusion of Spanish pop rock mixed with funky Hindu belly dance. Lidia Guevara and Xavi Mota bring their performance to Ireland for the first time. It is an unforgettable, rip-roaring Latin show that mixes everything with good music and belly dance!
See for yourself: www.youtube.com/watch?v=46tmnHkJFMY and www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR3kEQ_wkcU. Tickets are EUR 20 and are on sale from Ticketmaster and usual outlets nationwide.

Another series of events at the Writers Center is called “Into Print” with literary agent Jonathan Williams. It is a series of talks aimed specifically at aspiring writers and you can find the details here: writerscentre.ie/centre/events/intoprint/index.htm. The next two events are on 20 Nov and 16 Dec at 19:00.
HOME ORGANICS – COMPETITON
Home Organics (www.homeorganics.ie) deliver a delicious organic “Fruit to Share” box straight to your office door every week. The box contains 30 pieces of fruit and costs Euro 22 and can be delivered to your office (or home) in the Dublin City or South Dublin area (delivery routes are on the website). Home Organics also provide a regular fruit and vegetable organics box delivery service and a range of further organic products including cleaning stuffs. The Vegetable box comes with recipes and suggestions to serve. More details on the website www.homeorganics.ie or contact sarah@homeorganics.ie.
Sarah and her team made TWO organic “Fruit to Share” boxes available for a competition and going by the number of competition entries you thought this was a GREAT idea. I would have loved to let you all win one of the boxes, but the number of entries was sooo large, that my trusty “random number generator” had to decide who are the two winners. And here they are……Congratulations to Claire Doherty who will be able to share her fruit box with her colleagues at Lavelle Coleman and Rachel Freedman who can spread the love among her co-workers in Spin 103.8. Claire and Rachel, I will contact you in the next few days to arrange all with you!
If you didn’t win, have another look at www.homeorganics.ie and consider ordering a fruit or a vegetable box. They are great! Or even better – think about this: If you can’t think of a good Christmas present for parents or grand-parents or other friends, get them a 3 or 6 or 12 month “subscription” for a regular fruit or vegetable box delivery! That way you can make them smile LOTS of times throughout the year! ;-) Contact Sarah in Home Organics to discuss the options: 01- 4060034.
All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

U2 TOWER DELAYED
Did you hear that the Dublin Docklands have informed that the U2 Tower, which is meant to be built in the Docklands not too far from Pearse Street will be delayed by one year? Tourists are ALREADY visiting the site where at some stage (my guess is more in 3-5 years than next year!) the U2 Tower will be built! Not sure what is so exciting about an empty plot, but U2 obviously have a magical effect on some people. Apart from the fact that a few of U2’s millions will be invested in this building (with a healthy return, I am sure), the new U2 recording studio is planned to be at the top floor of the seriously high building.

ALL YOU CAN DRINK FOR EUR 50
Sin Bar in Temple Bar has announced that it is running an “All you can drink” offer for EUR 50. www.herald.ie/national-news/city-news/bar-pushes-all-you-can-drink-offer-for-euro50-1518900.html With current pub prices it is not surprising that pubs have to start with some innovative ideas to attract people. Lowering some prices INCLUDING soft drink prices would be a better idea! Now EUR 50 is not necessarily a bargain and maybe that will somewhat “filter” the customers going for it, but it is interesting that the Manager, Ciaran Gray, said – according to the newspaper article – that “It will absolutely not encourage excessive drinking because we’ll be as strict on that as ever…”. I wonder if he has ever been at an event in Ireland where there was a free bar provided!? I guess the answer is NO, otherwise he would realise that this statement is MORE than questionable!
PEADAR KEARNEY – NEW VENUE WITH LOTS OF FREE EVENTS
Carlos from GigEvents contacted me today to tell me about a new venue with a brilliant gig line up. Peadar Kearney’s in 64 Dame Street, Dublin 2, is what once was called “Rogue”. But a total refit has turned this new venue in a hugely promising live music venue with an impressive list of free gigs and – in my opinion – THAT is the way to get people back into pubs, not with 50 Euro drinks promotions.
The free weekly events are

In addition watch out for free tours of the Finnish Exhibition with
Eva Anntilla (for example on Sunday 09 Nov at 16:00). www.nationalgallery.ie/html/programevents2.html#4 I am not sure if free means in that case that you don’t have to pay anything. It might be more likely that you still pay the entrance charge but no surcharge for the guided tour!? Maybe someone knows!?

OUT OF SITE – CLONTARF STRAND
Out Of Site presents “Promenade”, a day of live art along the Clontarf walkway to Bull Island on 08 November 2008 from 12:00-18:00. Out Of Site has invited 10 artists to respond to the Clontarf walkway. “Promenade” will use the sheltered bathing and seating areas, the walkway and the sea along the Clontarf seafront to present multiple performances to the public. The name Promenade refers to the walkway, the wandering from work to work and the notion of displaying oneself. Artists are Alastair MacLennan, Amanda Coogan, Dennis McNulty, Gareth Kennedy, Frances Mezzetti, Dominic Thorpe, Alex Conway, Sinead McCann, Michelle Browne and Pauline Cummins.
www.outofsite.info
Performances:
* Frances Mezzetti – Between and Beyond. 2.30-3.30pm
Nestled in the trees along the beginning of the walkway the artist will create a portrait based on her interactions with the local nursing home.
* Gareth Kennedy – Shout! 2-2.30pm
The artist will convert one of the iconic concrete booths of Clontarf Seafront into a bunker. A brass section from The Artane Band will occupy this enclosure while performing songs by the 80’s rock band, Tears for Fears. Pieces will include Everybody wants to rule the world (1985), Mad World (1982) & Shout (1984).
* Sinead McCann – Live Hand to Mouth 3.30-4.15pm
Sinead McCann will, through various performative narratives, explore the power structures that exist in daily lives of individuals who live on the margins of society.
* Dennis McNulty – infrastructure/flow 4-6pm (10 minute performances)
A scratch dj sculpts sounds – spoken word and musical fragments. As he works the decks, the sound appears to flow from outside the building, through the performance space and back out into the world. For the duration of this piece, the audience are invited inside Tom De Paor’s award-winning pumping station at Vernon Avenue, Clontarf, to immerse themselves in the flow and listen.
* Pauline Cummins – Head above Water 4-5pm
A figure clings to a metal ladder that rises from the sea. Ascending and descending constantly clinging, holding on, hanging off, gripping, slipping, suspended. The pull of the sea compels her descent: The desire for safety urges her upwards to solid ground. Her only options: up and down or letting go.
* Alex Conway – Sonic Glass 1-2pm
Alex Conway will present a live improvised sound performance using a bus shelter. He will work with pick ups,water,movement,effects to create a soundscape intertwined with the natural ambient sound of the Clontarf walkway.
* Dominic Thorpe – Between 1-3.30pm
Dominic Thorpe will present a two hour performance where he explores notions of memory. Through multiple tasks of writing and singing the performer challenges himself in his effort to find the place between remembering and forgetting.
* Michelle Browne – Synchronised Swimmers 12.30 – 12.50pm
The public are invited to join the artist in a group performance. Bring your towel and swimsuit and get your limbs tangled as we don our suits as only the Irish know how. Performance will last approximately 20 minutes. Participants advised to arrive at 12 noon.
* Alastair McLennan – RAITS STAIR 12-6pm
‘…….stroll for gentle exercise……….proceeding dance……going to and fro…….mixing ground…… ……..lead about to show…….riding new…… ……..audience standing…….leading bound……. ……..walking through…….’
* Amanda Coogan – How to explain the sea to an uneaten potato 12-6pm
Continuing Coogan’s investigation into duration and presence in live performance, for this six hour work she will reconstruct Beuy’s 1965 performance, and Abramovic’s 2005 re-enactment of same. Using the emblematic Irish food Coogan will ponder the world beyond this island.
ABASHED BATHERS WANTED – OUT OF SITE EVENT
During the week I got a mail from Michelle in which she asked for help. She explained: “I am making a new performance called Synchronised Swimmers for this year’s Out of Site (www.outofsite.info/) event called Promenade, which will be held in Clontarf on 08 November. It involves getting as many people as possible to change in and out of their togs on the Clontarf seafront. You are invited to join in this group performance, dubbed ‘the Alternative Spencer Tunick’. Bring your towel and swimsuit and get your limbs tangled as we don our suits as only the Irish know how.

______This is odd!!______________
Last week I mentioned that I might give up on the “This is odd!!” category, but then some of you requested to keep it going. Well, we’ll see! :-)
But I have one for again this week:
Isn’t it odd, that the people in two countries of the civilised world need to be protected from their inability to keep the hairdryer out of the bathtub, while the rest of the civilised world doesn’t need this level of “care”? Or why is it that only in Ireland and in the UK you can’t have a power socket in the bathroom, but in most other countries you can??

______Joerg’s Plans______________
Not sure if this will work and if it is any use to you, but here is what I intend to do this weekend: On Saturday I plan to go to the National Museum in Collins Barracks for the World War One Day and later to the Out of Site Festival in Clontarf, on Sunday I will probably go to the Lighting of the Christmas Tree in O’Connell Street and after that to the Gardiner Gospel Choir Mass in Gardiner Street. On Monday I will train Krav Maga, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday I will go to the Science Week Lectures and hopefully I will be able to say HI to Ania Witowska at her exhibition launch on Thurs. I would like to go to the Fomacs Film, but can’t do anything. And Thursday is Event Guide night anyway! That’s my plans for the week! Not sure if it helps anybody to navigate easier through this massive list of events (and I even had to leave some out, because after writing on this Event Guide for 12 hours I had to put an end to it!)
—————–
I have to admit that on a scale from 1 to 10 my enthusiasm for writing this Event Guide was this time close to 3. So the writing didn’t flow that easily initially and the excitement wasn’t fully there. BUT it got better when I got into it. So now I hope you enjoy the Event Guide and that my work is of benefit to you. ;-)
Enjoy the weekend!
–Joerg

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, let me know by e-mail and I will make sure that you will be taken off the list for as long as you want. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby. However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) and if you want to help me with the running of it (no minimum amount!) just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the word “Donation” in the subject and I will reply with a link that will allow you to make your donation by PayPal or per credit card. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you find in pubs and other venues.
