———————————————————————
Hi all!
Sometimes people ask me why I only write about free events in the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Do I dislike non-free events? Or am I maybe on a crusade trying to eradicate non-free events? Noooo! I focus on free events only, because I like free events; because I like culture and education and I think it is great if it is accessible for everyone; because it is necessary to do a bit of match-making between event organisers and their audience, especially if they have no funds to advertise their event AND because nobody else offers the service I am offering. ;-) I fully understand that many events can not be free, but where it is possible, the organisers deserve that we all show them our support!
[ad]
The Dublin City Soul Festival is one of those events that could easily have been terminated a number of years ago, but Chris Maher and his team are creating magic year after year by making a festival happen with very little financial support and no big sponsorship. This year is the sixth year and I have to be honest with you: This year is the most crucial year of them all. If you show your support for the festival and come in big numbers to Merrion Square on 26+27 May, there is a good chance that there will be a Soul Festival 2013. But if the response is not so warm, then Chris Maher and team will have to consider the other option and the Dublin City Soul Festival 2012 might be the last one. Why am I telling you all this? And why this week, one week early? So that you can plan for next week! And tell your friends! And your family and colleagues!
And while you tell everybody about the free Dublin City Soul Festival in Merrion Square, tell them about the Dublin Event Guide as well. Tell them that there is this odd German who spends every week more than 25 hours on researching and writing this amazing (I am biased!) Event Guide and all he is looking for is some donations to cover the cost.
Spread the word, so that everybody in Dublin will hear about the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Get your friends and colleagues to subscribe on www.dublineventguide.com or they can go to www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide (Click on “Join Email List” at the top)! In addition you can tell the world by printing this poster and hanging it up in your gym, work place, local supermarket etc.: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf Thanks!

——
The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
This week’s theme for the Feel Good Slot is: Believe! Based on the concept “The start to a better world or a better live or a better future, is our believe that it is possible.” If you don’t believe in a better future, then it will definitely not happen, because you will either sabotage it yourself or let other people sabotage it for you. If on the other hand you believe firmly in a better future, you will do what ever it takes to work towards a better future. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8aYDfpcxbc

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Clodagh O’C and Aine G. were the wonderful people that helped the Dublin Event Guide with their much appreciated donations. Every bit of help is hugely appreciated and is important to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about …and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).
I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)
BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

A surprisingly quiet week! There are many events taking place, but again I am missing one outstanding headline event, that captures the attention.
If drawing is your thing then the National Drawing Day on Saturday will certainly interest you. If you are sports mad, you will probably not be interested in much else than the two important games in the afternoon/evening in Rugby and soccer. For the non-drawing, non-sports mad people it will be a little trickier.
I will do a bit of Dublin City Tourism tomorrow by going on a tourist walking tour. Every few weeks I do a tourist day to discover the bits and pieces of Dublin that are so easy to ignore because they are around all the time. Like the museums, or the markets or as this week, a walking tour. (A few weeks ago I did the Viking Splash Tour and have to say that it was lots of fun.)
Do something DIFFERENT this week! And make it fun! :-)

DUBLIN CITY SOUL FESTIVAL
I now have the programme for you to download. The main events are the Soul Picnic on Saturday and Sunday, it is a two day affair this year. In addition there will be a really interesting exhibition of painted and “artified” musical instruments (mainly guitars) in the exhibition area upstairs in Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre. Then there is a Restaurant Trail and the Gospel Brunch (on Sat+Sun).
So make sure you come to the Soul Picnic and have a look at the other events too. The Soul Picnic in Merrion Square is free and so is the Instrument Art exhibition.
Download this years programme here: www.dublineventguide.com/media/SoulFestival2012.pdf
BEALTAINE FESTIVAL 2012
The Bealtaine Festival continues still. It is a full month of events for the older age group and uses the theme “celebrating creativity as we age” this year. Estimates are that over 120,000 people will take part in Bealtaine. “From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists. …” There is a vast amount of events and the big contribution of the Public Libraries makes this event even a bigger success.
I have some event included again this week, but for more details you should check bealtaine.com/ and www.dublincitypubiclibraries.ie or have a look at the schedule here

———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

It will also refer to the exhibition with the same title which is currently on show at London’s Barbican. This exhibition is supported by the Goethe-Institut London.

GREEN TAXI LIGHT PANIC
During the week the print media and radio all ran the story of the green taxi lights and it definitely got out of hand! I saw the green taxi lights (mounted above the taxi sign) appearing on many many taxis over the last few weeks and was wondering what their meaning was. Then on Monday the journal.ie had investigated the issue and reported about it here www.thejournal.ie/dublin-taxi-drivers-using-covert-signal-of-irishness-444694-May2012 Some sources claimed that the green light was used by taxi drivers to indicate that they are Irish, others said that the (very strong and easily visible) green light was there to tell customer that the taxi was available and that the yellow taxi sign was not strong enough during the day.
I definitely thought the green light was easier to see, but it had never occurred to me that it might only be used by Irish drivers. Now many have concluded that it is racist and the taxi drivers refute this suggestion and the discussion on journal.ie is as heated as it gets.
I have witnessed the huge tension between black and white taxi drivers at Dublin’s taxi ranks and I find it disgusting how the white taxi drivers fight against the black drivers. And it the green light was to differentiate the Irish taxi drivers from the others, I wouldn’t agree with that idea, BUT do we really have to get so worked up about it? Would the simplest solution not be that every taxi driver who feels like it (no matter what skin colour) would mount the green light? As soon as that happens, there is no differentiation possible anymore and all potentially racist intentions are coming to nothing. – Well, the story has moved on and it turns out that the green light is illegal and will have to get removed again. However the discussion about it, much more than the green light by itself, has shown that there are worrying and very odd discriminatory opinions around and it is our duty to make sure that these odd opinions don’t win any ground.

This week is slightly quieter and it is therefore a week to get ready! Use the time to move all the obstacles out of the way, so that you can entirely enjoy next weekend. The main event obviously will be the Soul Picnic, but you see in the Upcoming events, that there are a good few other things taking place as well. If you have made room for all these events, you can enjoy them next weekend. :-)
Have an event-ful weekend,

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
