Hi all!

Last week’s “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” contained 140 (!!) free events taking place in Dublin in just one single week. And the trend for the coming months is clearly upwards! That’s a LOT of free events and I guess it is a clear reply to complaints about “not much happening in Dublin”.

I didn’t count the events this week, I might do that once the mail is sent out. But going by the time it took me to write the newsletter this week, there are lots of events again.

[ad]

Check this week also the interesting competitions. AND if you want to help the Dublin Event Guide and at the same time want to save some money, then check out the Book Depository ad. Lowest book prices and now another 10% until end of April. NOW is the time to buy the books that you always wanted to get. And don’t forget to click on the link in the ad before you do that, then you give something back to the Dublin Event Guide!

——
The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
“It’s Possible!” is that your minimum attitude to things you want to achieve? Do you believe in your ability to achieve the goals you have? Listen to this video clip with Les Brown. The clip is a bit longer, so move the clip forward to 4:23 if you have limited time. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwSMAd039rk

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Brendan M and Carmel M were the only wonderful person that helped the Dublin Event Guide with their much appreciated donations. Every bit of help is hugely appreciated and is important to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about …and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need about 4 donations every week for that) a or even to improve the Event Guide (anything above 4 donations).

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. And all I ask for is just 25 cent per week from you or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? :-)

BTW: If you think that funds from advertisement should be enough because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY after clicking or if you buy at a later stage without using the links in my ads, I get nothing. So it helps if you use the links I provide every time you want to purchase something. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

In the last 12 months the following wonderful people have sponsored this Dublin Event Guide: Tom D, Luke, Monika K, Janine McK, Sebastian B, Paul T, Anne G, Marc F, Camelia P, Nicola B, Ciaran H, Ryan M, Ellen M, Gerard C, Laura G, Fergus G, Emma S, Tara R, Karen L, Catherine T., Rainey D-G, Sally P, Johan S, Lorraine F, Eimear MacH, Elzbieta D, Monika E, Tracey OC, Julia Sch., Isabelle F, Barry P, Alan G, Gerard Ph, Irial G, Louise M, Milena V, Fanny T, Clodagh O’C, Fiona F, Yvonne S, Loretta K, Lauren O’R, Charles C, Caoimhe L, Adrian Ph, Sandi C, Elva O’G, Sally Ph, Thomas D, Emilie Ch, Hans Martin W, Eamonn O’R, Patrick O’C, Eamonn U, Fiona O’R, Louise B, Serena F, Paul M, Louise F, Colin D, Philip McK, Catherine E, Mélanie B, Irene H, Jo H, Ronan K, Clodagh O’C, Alison P, Claire H, Brian L, Therese O’R, Sean S, Zelie McG, Christian K, Esme E, Vincent R, Sophie P, Tom B, Barbara Q-B, Joan S, Catherine E, Deirdre I, Donna M, Conor R, Tom McM, Anna F, Corina R, Maite L-Sch, Aine C, Justin McC, Paul A, Enrique P, Kiera M, Sinead D and Sarah C, Anto K, A C, Lorraine M, Nikodem R, Stefanie N, Emma L, Brendan M, Margaret B, Karen D, Clare D, Paula R, Selina McC, Darragh D, Marta T, Rebecca T, Celina N, Caroline K, Nicola R, Brendan M, Carmel M and www.GravitationalFX.ie (An Irish Web Design, SEO and Internet Marketing who offer affordable web design.), www.FlamencoIndalo.com (A group that supports and promotes the art of Flamenco in Ireland.), www.olliart.com (An art curator and seller of art to businesses and private collectors.), www.thepaulkanegallery.com (A great Art Gallery, on the search for a new gallery venue.) and www.a1computers.ie in Dun Laoghaire/Cabinteely (…who repair computers, printers and sort out Internet problems fast and who sell computers, laptops and lo w priced printer cartridges). All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED WITH LIFE?
Are you bothered, bewildered or just bogged down with life at the moment? – Mary Keating, MA, trained psychoanalytic psychotherapist, is available for appointments in Custom House Medical Centre, IFSC or at 20 Lower Baggot Street. Please phone 01-6776253 or 0868783086 or email mkeating@iol.ie for enquiries or to make an appointment. Her fees are appropriate to circumstances, so talk to her if you could do with some help and support. www.agalma.ie/therapists/mary-keating
——————————————————–

The four big events this week are the Five Lamps Arts Festival, the Record Store Day, the World Book Night and, with some slightly lesser appeal to the wide masses, the Franco-Irish Literary Festival.

I will definitely try to go to a Five Lamps Arts Festival events and maybe to a Record Store Day event. On Saturday have a look at the Exchange Market in the Exchange Dublin. On Sunday I would go to the Ocean Film Screening on Meeting House Square, but I am at the Gardiner Gospel Choir Mass at that time. The World Book Night events seem disappointingly slim on Monday. The Cloud Computing Conference interests me on Wednesday, but I know that this is certainly not everybody’s cup of tea. :-)

GOSPEL RISING MUSIC FESTIVAL – BRAY
If you are interested in Gospel Music and especially if you are or would like to get involved actively, this is a Must Go event! The Gospel Rising Music Festival (www.gospelrising.com) is taking place for the third years and after Ennis oand Portlaoise, this year it is taking place in our neighbourhood in Bray.
From Fri 11 – Sun 13 May Bray is the Gospel Capital of Ireland and Gospel Rising is one of the first music festivals of the season.
“Gospel Rising” is a combination of free gospel choir gigs and non-free high quality workshops, giving everyone the chance to experience gospel choir singing.
This years workshops are all listed on www.gospelrising.com/workshop-details.html and even if you have never sung before or are not in a Gospel Choir you can take part and enjoy. Topics and areas that are covered are to improve your soloist skills and styles, join in with large group workshops, experience gospel styles like Contemporary Gospel or Barbershop, and the choreography style this year will be based on the TV show, Glee. You can choose the workshops you like.
A weekend ticket for Gospel Rising is EUR 60 and includes access to all workshops and concerts and tickets can be bought on www.gospelrising.com For the Dublin Event Guide, the organisers have made 2 Weekend Tickets available for a competition, so that two of you can join the hundreds of Gospel aficionados that will come to Bray from all over Ireland.
I do the sound engineering for the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir and sing in a Gospel Choir as a backing choir to Kevin Doyle’s Elvis Tribute Show, so Gospel Music is one of my (many) musical Likes and I will definitely be in Bray for the festival! My ticket is already booked. ;-)
If you want to win one of the ticket, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with GOSPEL RISING in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Thursday 03 May.
For more details check the website www.gospelrising.com and www.facebook.com/groups/361605296569 to keep up-to-date and to support this festival.

THE STORY OF ABBA – TICKET COMPETITION
I ran this competition last week and was able to get another few tickets for you:
The Tivoli is venue for “Thank you for the Music – The story of ABBA”, a multi-media experience of film, drama, costumes, choreography and the music of the greatest pop group of all time. It starts at Eurovision 1974, when they suddenly burst into our lives with “Waterloo”. Then we whirl through the early years of “Mamma Mia” and “SOS” before entering the Superstar era with songs like “Money, Money, Money”, “Fernando” and “Dancing Queen”. The show celebrates this group that sold more than 370 mio records in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek way and shines a light on their personal stories. Tickets are EUR 20 for all Matinees and on Tuesdays and EUR 28.50 for the shows from Wednesday – Saturday. The show started on 03 April and will only run until 29 April. So all Abba fans should quickly go over to www.tivoli.ie/thank-you-for-the-music-%E2%80%93-the-story-of-abba/ to book your tickets.
For the Dublin Event Guide Readers the Tivoli has made five (!!) pairs of tickets available and if you feel lucky, you can give this competition a go: Send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with ABBA as the subject and with your name and your mobile phone number in the body of the mail. (If you don’t follow these instructions your mail will not get sorted correctly and you will not be able to win.) Your mail needs to be with me by Monday 16 April at 15:00. Please note that the tickets are for Tuesday 17 April, so make sure that you are available on that day if you enter the competition. www.tivoli.ie/thank-you-for-the-music-%E2%80%93-the-story-of-abba/ Last week’s winners were Elaine Kennedy, Meisoon Nasralla, Maurice O’Dea and Louise Boppert.

There are a few competitions in the pipeline, so there will be more next week, but if you know someone who would like to get the word out about a product they are selling, put them in contact with me. Ticket competitions are great, but it would be nice to have a few more product competitions too. You can reach me on dublineventguide@gmail.com

KNOCK DOWN THE CENTRAL BANK!?
The symbol for the economic trouble in Ireland, the skeleton of a building that was meant to become the head quarter of the Anglo Irish Bank near the Conference Centre at the Quays will be bought by the Central Bank according to news reports. It is a massive building and I would imagine that the Central Bank will not need more than this one building. Could we then maybe knock down the ugly Central Bank in Dame Street? ;-) The sale price is indicated as around 8mio and that is amazingly low, but the building first has to be completed and that will cost a lot more of your and my money. www.rte.ie/news/2012/0416/central-bank-to-buy-anglo-building-on-quays.html

METEOR SHOWER OVER IRELAND
This weekend you should be able to see one of the most impressive Meteor Showers over Ireland. The shower is called “Lyrids” and Astronomy Ireland informed in their newsletter that the shower is already visible, but will be its clearest on Saturday night until Sunday morning (from 23:00-06:00). At the brightest, up to 20 meteors can be seen per hour! And because there will be no moon, you have an even better chance to see it. You might have to leave the City Centre, though, as otherwise the lights around you could make it more difficult to see. www.astronomy.ie/lyrids2012.php

CLAMPING CHARGE HIKE ON THE CARDS
I think we can assume that in most cases people try their best to be compliant with the parking rules in Dublin. There are exceptions, for example when someone parks – obviously knowingly – on a double yellow line or at a bus stop or in a wheel chair parking space. But in general it probably would be right to assume that the majority of clamped cars are clamped for their pay&display ticket having expired.
In that case a clamping charge that hurts should be apply and I think EUR 80 hurts everybody nowadays. Nevertheless, the Parking Appeals Officer of Dublin City thinks the fee should be increased to an outrageous EUR 130. The person that doesn’t care about paying EUR 80 will not care more about EUR 130 and for the majority of people 80 is bad enough. But the weirdest argument of the week has to be “Appeals officer William Keilthy says this means that the charge has decreased by 25% in real terms, despite the fact that the cost of petrol has doubled during the period.” How are clamping charges related to petrol prices?

CULTURE AND THE ECONOMY – EUROPE DAY

The Temple Bar Cultural Trust is inviting to a half-day conference on Culture and the Economy on Europe Day 09 May 2012. This event is a great opportunity to gain insights into new thinking and research around measuring the value of cultural and creative activity. It will also be a great opportunity to hear about successful examples of cultural and creative enterprises combining talent and technology to great effect in growing audiences and revenues. Speakers are Irish economist Finbarr Bradley, David Throsby, author of The Culture of Innovation and The Economics of the Performing Arts and Professor John O’ Hagan from Trinity College Dublin. Broadcaster and economist George Lee will chair the event.
Online registration is open since Wed 11 April at tbcultureandeconomy.eventbrite.com/ and if you want to attend this event, you better book your tickets soon! blog.templebar.ie/?p=5216

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 10,000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

ALLIANCE FRANCAISE – PHOTOGRAPHY AWARD EXHIBITION
Opening on Wed 25 April at 18:30, the second Alliance Francaise Photography Award Exhibition is taking place. Four artists are shortlisted and they are Darek Fortas, Sabina Mac Mahon, Dara McGrath and Miriam O’Connor. After having watched the exhibition you are asked to vote for your preferred artist. I am not sure yet how long this exhibition will run, but it seems that it will be on show at least until 12 June. alliance-francaise.ie/culture/

OF TIME & SPACE – CYCLING TOUR
Sat 21 Apr: 13:00-16:00 – Meeting point at the Royal Canal, opposite Croke Park
Of Time & Space is a cycling event along the Royal Canal to discover James Joyce’s Ulysses’ connection to Astronomy and how the Dunsink Observatory’s legacy lives on today.
How has the equation i² = j² = k² = ijk = ?1 influenced the world. William Rowan Hamilton scratched ‘quaternion’ on Broom Bridge on 16th October in 1843. Both artist Kathryn Maguire and a Group studying Community Care in Marino College embarked on a discovery of the secrets of Dunsink Observatory and Time They discovered that Ireland had its own Mean Time, which was 25 minutes before London and was known as Dunsink Time. And they also found that William Rowan Hamilton, the Observatory’s Chief Astronomer and Director, discovered a equation which is now only being realised 169 years after him.
The cycling event is part of the Five Lamps Arts Festival and will let you view the creative findings and meet characters from Ulysses who are out of time but for a good reason. Dunsink time is mentioned five times in James Joyce’s novel, Ulysses. Discover how Chapters Ithaca and Lestrygonians reveal information about Dunsink. Maurice O Reilly will explain the Maths at Broom Bridge.

NATIONAL MUSEUM EVENT
Sat 21 Apr: 15:30-16:30 – National Museum, Kildare Street (Archaeology), Dublin 2
I have to admit that the “pricing policy” of the National Museum puzzles me regularly. Most events are free. Often public tours are free but every now and then there is a public tour that costs EUR 2. It is not a lot, considering that the museum visit is free and most other events are free, but it is still intriguing why some events cost money and others don’t.
This week’s (non-free) tour sounds interesting, so I will mention it. It is entitled “Bog Bodies” and takes place on Saturday and is suitable for all ages. “Examine Iron Age finds from Irish wetlands including bog butter and the mysterious bog bodies.” Pay your EUR 2 at the Museum shop. (16 yrs or under are free.) No booking required. www.museum.ie/en/list/calendar-of-events.aspx?eventID=2810

YELP BACKYARD BAZAAR – BERNARD SHAW PUB
Sun 06 May: 13:00-15:00 – The Bernard Shaw Pub, 11 – 12 South Richmond Street, Portobello, Dublin 2. – Yelp is a great and very popular review and recommendation website and their events in Dublin are the type of events people talk about for years. I well remember every single one of them and am already looking forward to the Backyard Bazaar. At these Yelp events you meet lots of nice people and – here comes the extra bonus – you can sample free food and drink. The goal is to celebrate local businesses in Dublin and encourage people to support them and get the word out there about them. To get on the guest list you have to register via the website and that is why I already list it here, so don’t waste any time! …And on the day you better be early, because there have been looong queues at previous events. www.yelp.ie/events/dublin-yelps-backyard-bazaar

THE PRESIDENT AND DUBLIN’S POSTCODES??
Every week I list lots of addresses in the Dublin Event Guide. Many of you don’t need to be reminded where, for example, the National Library is, but others are maybe not that familiar with the locations. And only last week I realised a total inconsistency in the Postal Code System. I am sure you knew that all districts south of the Liffey are even numbered and the ones north of the Liffey are odd numbered. A clear and definite rule that creates some strange map where Dublin 14 is next to Dublin 4 and Dublin 17 is next to D9, D5 and D13. But more interesting is the odd exception that was made for Phoenix Park. Phoenix Park is not Dublin 7 as it should be. Instead it is Dublin 8! It is north of the Liffey and has an even number? I would have thought that maybe someone objected to the president of the country living in an odd numbered postal district, but then I found out that the postal district numbering was introduced by the British Government in 1917. At that time the Vice Roy (or Lord Lieutenant of Ireland), the British King’s representative and head of the Irish executive lived in Áras an Uachtaráin until 1922. Maybe he had a problem with the odd number??

You won’t believe how glad I am that this week’s Dublin Event Guide is completed now. I am labouring a bad cold that kept me in bed on Wednesday and most of Thursday and I only got up to write this week’s Event Guide. So, I hope it was worth it and you enjoy it. ;-)

Have a great weekend,

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
