Last week’s “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” contained 140 (!!) free events taking place in Dublin in just one single week. And the trend for the coming months is clearly upwards! That’s a LOT of free events and I guess it is a clear reply to complaints about “not much happening in Dublin”.

I didn’t count the events this week, I might do that once the mail is sent out. But going by the time it took me to write the newsletter this week, there are lots of events again.

The four big events this week are the Five Lamps Arts Festival, the Record Store Day, the World Book Night and, with some slightly lesser appeal to the wide masses, the Franco-Irish Literary Festival.

I will definitely try to go to a Five Lamps Arts Festival events and maybe to a Record Store Day event. On Saturday have a look at the Exchange Market in the Exchange Dublin. On Sunday I would go to the Ocean Film Screening on Meeting House Square, but I am at the Gardiner Gospel Choir Mass at that time. The World Book Night events seem disappointingly slim on Monday. The Cloud Computing Conference interests me on Wednesday, but I know that this is certainly not everybody’s cup of tea. :-)

GOSPEL RISING MUSIC FESTIVAL – BRAY
If you are interested in Gospel Music and especially if you are or would like to get involved actively, this is a Must Go event! The Gospel Rising Music Festival (www.gospelrising.com) is taking place for the third years and after Ennis oand Portlaoise, this year it is taking place in our neighbourhood in Bray.
From Fri 11 – Sun 13 May Bray is the Gospel Capital of Ireland and Gospel Rising is one of the first music festivals of the season.
“Gospel Rising” is a combination of free gospel choir gigs and non-free high quality workshops, giving everyone the chance to experience gospel choir singing.
This years workshops are all listed on www.gospelrising.com/workshop-details.html and even if you have never sung before or are not in a Gospel Choir you can take part and enjoy. Topics and areas that are covered are to improve your soloist skills and styles, join in with large group workshops, experience gospel styles like Contemporary Gospel or Barbershop, and the choreography style this year will be based on the TV show, Glee. You can choose the workshops you like.
A weekend ticket for Gospel Rising is EUR 60 and includes access to all workshops and concerts and tickets can be bought on www.gospelrising.com For the Dublin Event Guide, the organisers have made 2 Weekend Tickets available for a competition, so that two of you can join the hundreds of Gospel aficionados that will come to Bray from all over Ireland.
I do the sound engineering for the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir and sing in a Gospel Choir as a backing choir to Kevin Doyle’s Elvis Tribute Show, so Gospel Music is one of my (many) musical Likes and I will definitely be in Bray for the festival! My ticket is already booked. ;-)

THE STORY OF ABBA – TICKET COMPETITION
I ran this competition last week and was able to get another few tickets for you:
The Tivoli is venue for “Thank you for the Music – The story of ABBA”, a multi-media experience of film, drama, costumes, choreography and the music of the greatest pop group of all time. It starts at Eurovision 1974, when they suddenly burst into our lives with “Waterloo”. Then we whirl through the early years of “Mamma Mia” and “SOS” before entering the Superstar era with songs like “Money, Money, Money”, “Fernando” and “Dancing Queen”. The show celebrates this group that sold more than 370 mio records in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek way and shines a light on their personal stories. Tickets are EUR 20 for all Matinees and on Tuesdays and EUR 28.50 for the shows from Wednesday – Saturday. The show started on 03 April and will only run until 29 April. KNOCK DOWN THE CENTRAL BANK!?
The symbol for the economic trouble in Ireland, the skeleton of a building that was meant to become the head quarter of the Anglo Irish Bank near the Conference Centre at the Quays will be bought by the Central Bank according to news reports. It is a massive building and I would imagine that the Central Bank will not need more than this one building. Could we then maybe knock down the ugly Central Bank in Dame Street? ;-) The sale price is indicated as around 8mio and that is amazingly low, but the building first has to be completed and that will cost a lot more of your and my money. www.rte.ie/news/2012/0416/central-bank-to-buy-anglo-building-on-quays.html

METEOR SHOWER OVER IRELAND
This weekend you should be able to see one of the most impressive Meteor Showers over Ireland. The shower is called “Lyrids” and Astronomy Ireland informed in their newsletter that the shower is already visible, but will be its clearest on Saturday night until Sunday morning (from 23:00-06:00). At the brightest, up to 20 meteors can be seen per hour! And because there will be no moon, you have an even better chance to see it. You might have to leave the City Centre, though, as otherwise the lights around you could make it more difficult to see. www.astronomy.ie/lyrids2012.php

CLAMPING CHARGE HIKE ON THE CARDS
I think we can assume that in most cases people try their best to be compliant with the parking rules in Dublin. There are exceptions, for example when someone parks – obviously knowingly – on a double yellow line or at a bus stop or in a wheel chair parking space. But in general it probably would be right to assume that the majority of clamped cars are clamped for their pay&display ticket having expired.
In that case a clamping charge that hurts should be apply and I think EUR 80 hurts everybody nowadays. Nevertheless, the Parking Appeals Officer of Dublin City thinks the fee should be increased to an outrageous EUR 130. The person that doesn’t care about paying EUR 80 will not care more about EUR 130 and for the majority of people 80 is bad enough. But the weirdest argument of the week has to be “Appeals officer William Keilthy says this means that the charge has decreased by 25% in real terms, despite the fact that the cost of petrol has doubled during the period.” How are clamping charges related to petrol prices?

The Five Lamps Arts Festival returns in its fifth year as one of the main festivals on Dublin’s Northside. The festival will be showcasing a range of art forms and events including literature, dance, opera, traditional music, visual art and theatre. Of Time & Space is a cycling event along the Royal Canal to discover James Joyce’s Ulysses’ connection to Astronomy and how the Dunsink Observatory’s legacy lives on today.
How has the equation i² = j² = k² = ijk = ?1 influenced the world. William Rowan Hamilton scratched ‘quaternion’ on Broom Bridge on 16th October in 1843. Both artist Kathryn Maguire and a Group studying Community Care in Marino College embarked on a discovery of the secrets of Dunsink Observatory and Time They discovered that Ireland had its own Mean Time, which was 25 minutes before London and was known as Dunsink Time. And they also found that William Rowan Hamilton, the Observatory’s Chief Astronomer and Director, discovered a equation which is now only being realised 169 years after him.
The cycling event is part of the Five Lamps Arts Festival and will let you view the creative findings and meet characters from Ulysses who are out of time but for a good reason. Dunsink time is mentioned five times in James Joyce’s novel, Ulysses. Discover how Chapters Ithaca and Lestrygonians reveal information about Dunsink. Maurice O Reilly will explain the Maths at Broom Bridge.

The artist Barry Flanagan was an eager exponent of Concrete Poetry. Departing from formalist sculpture through his employment of unconventional materials and practices, in the early part of his career he began to write Concrete Poems, a sort of ‘literary’ sculpture. MIGRATION CHALLENGES – LECTURE – GOETHE INSTITUT

“How Migration Challenges Notions of Society, Education and Culture” is the title of a public discussion and lecture in the lecture series “EUNIC/UNIQUE Thoughts:
Public Discussions on European Issues”.
Ireland is one of just two EU countries that has a majority of migrants from the EU member states. The diversity and scale of EU migration is a recent phenomenon though there is a long tradition of migration to Ireland from some EU-15 states, especially the UK, Germany and France. Ireland has also become home to a range of people from outside the EU including Nigeria, China, India, Philippines and Brazil.
The lectures and panel discussions for each theme will assess how migrants are integrating in Irish society and in other European societies and will address the on-going impact of migration on these societies.
The last event in a 3-event series will take place on Thursday and is entitled “Theme 3: Culture and Migration”

THE PRESIDENT AND DUBLIN’S POSTCODES??
Every week I list lots of addresses in the Dublin Event Guide. Many of you don’t need to be reminded where, for example, the National Library is, but others are maybe not that familiar with the locations. And only last week I realised a total inconsistency in the Postal Code System. I am sure you knew that all districts south of the Liffey are even numbered and the ones north of the Liffey are odd numbered. A clear and definite rule that creates some strange map where Dublin 14 is next to Dublin 4 and Dublin 17 is next to D9, D5 and D13. But more interesting is the odd exception that was made for Phoenix Park. Phoenix Park is not Dublin 7 as it should be. Instead it is Dublin 8! It is north of the Liffey and has an even number? I would have thought that maybe someone objected to the president of the country living in an odd numbered postal district, but then I found out that the postal district numbering was introduced by the British Government in 1917. At that time the Vice Roy (or Lord Lieutenant of Ireland), the British King’s representative and head of the Irish executive lived in Áras an Uachtaráin until 1922. Maybe he had a problem with the odd number??
