Hi all!

Welcome to the first “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” in 2012. I mentioned it last week: 2012 will be the biggest year yet for the Dublin Event Guide. Reaching 10,000 readers was a big achievement last year and this year will bring a whole range of new things with the biggest news coming at some stage later this month if everything goes according to plan. Make sure you don’t miss the big announcement!! :-)

[ad]

Are you as enthusiastic about 2012 as I am? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think we will be free of challenges and problems in 2012. The economic situation of Ireland will not improve substantially, there will be challenges in many people’s lives and there will be good and bad news throughout the year like every year. But all these things will happen either way, no matter if you are looking forward to 2012 or not. I choose to look forward to it and try to meet upcoming challenges with a smile. It makes it a lot easier to get through. If the challenges are so big that you have trouble keeping a smile on your face, make sure that you look for people that support you. Use your support network to remind you that there is always some sort of a sliver lining or some light at the end of a tunnel. So, dig out your “Is feidir linn”, the Gaelic version of Obama’s “Yes we can” and let’s see what we can achieve together in 2012!

I am up for compiling another 52 issues of the Dublin Event Guide and in addition to that I am planning to run some training courses in areas that I am trained and experienced in, like Goal Setting, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Mindset for Success. If you want to be informed about any of these events, drop me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com) with TRAINING in the subject.

Growing our Dublin Event Guide Community significantly further is one of my goals. Our community of more than 10,000 people is being heard and recognised now. Last year the Dublin Event Guide was featured on “Capital D”, the RTE1 TV programme and this weekend I am invited to come to an interview to Newstalk 106-108 (www.newstalk.ie). You can hear my chat with Orla Barry in “The Green Room” on Sunday 08 Jan at some stage between 08:00-10:00. (Repeat on Monday 09 Jan from 22:00-00:00).

You can help with getting the word out further by a) telling lots more people about the Dublin Event Guide and by b) helping with some donation to improve and enhance and better this weekly e-zine/newsletter even more. Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm to donate!

There are tens of thousands more people in Dublin that have never heard about this e-zine and YOU can help to tell them: Print this leaflet out and hang it up where many people will be able to see it: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf Alternatively you can guide them to go to www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and to subscribe by clicking on “Join Email List” in the menu on the left or go to www.dublineventguide.com and subscribe there.

———
We are more than 7200 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide but it would be great to grow the community there even more. Join in and click LIKE on the facebook page and tell your friends! You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page and you can share your free events directly there with the other people in the Dublin Event Guide Community.

——
The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive!
In the intro to today’s Dublin Event Guide I said that you might as well be enthusiastic and welcoming to what the new year brings because your attitude will not necessarily change what happens around you but it will change the approach you take to what happens. You can be resourceful and positive or closed minded and negative. A LOT depends on the words you use when you talk to yourself about things that happen to you. This week’s Feel Good Slot reminds you of the Power of Words:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzgzim5m7oU I used that clip some longer while back, but it is perfectly fitting today, so here it is again.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week Tom B, Barbara Q-B, Joan S, Catherine E, Deirdre I all generously contributed to the Dublin Event Guide and after a dry period before Christmas, their contribution is HUGELY appreciated. These donations are important to ensure that you all will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. If you have never helped with a contribution, ask yourself if the Dublin Event Guide has helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about or if it even helped you to save money…and then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

To join the list of the much appreciated and esteemed supporters of the Dublin Event Guide, go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost. – To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more.

I am giving 25-30 hours every week for no pay or reward, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. All I need from you is to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!?

BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here every time you want to purchases something, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

——————————————————–

We still experience the early January slump as far as events are concerned. Most event organisers only got back into the office this week and many of us are still recovering from the Christmas festivities.

Nevertheless there are a good few events: Some of the Christmas related markets and events are still running until Sunday, but I think I have covered them all for this year.

I did it already last week, but if you are in Temple Bar at any stage during the day this week, you should go to the Exchange Dublin (behind Turk’s Head and across the road from the Czech Inn) and have a look at the Giant Kaleidoscope exhibition there. It won’t take long to enjoy the wonderful constructions, but I really liked the what the artist (Paul G ay) did.

My weekend will most likely start with the Car Boot Sale in Tallaght, then I might get a chance to go the Polish WOSP Charity event and maybe to the Temple Bar Food Market. The Market is back on Meeting House Square and I saw and experienced the the new retractable roof last weekend: Brilliant! No more rainy Temple Bar Fodo Market! ;-)

On Saturday or on Sunday I will probably leave Dublin to climb up the Sugar Loaf mountain in Wicklow to exercise a little. But in the afternoon/evening, the Saucy Sunday and the Sunday Roast in the Grand Social and the Mercantile are two of the great regular events that are worth going to. I will be at the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass again the evening.

Then during the week I have looked at Comedy Crunch on Monday, the History Ireland Hedge School on Wednesday and the talk about the Future of Water in Ireland in the Science Gallery on Thursday.

Enough to keep me busy. How about you? What type of events would you like to see?

______Dublin News______________

FIRST FORTNIGHT FESTIVAL
First Fortnight is a sequence of events and you might wonder why I don’t include the First Fortnight events in the normal day-by-day section of the Event Guide. Well, the reason is because the website is unfortunately quite confusing and anything but clear, so it took me ages to get my head around what they are doing. And then I found out that many of the events are not free, but the event is definitely worth a mentioning and some events are free, so for that reason, I decided to put it in the Dublin News.
First Fortnight is running from 04-14 Jan and is an arts festival dedicated to promoting mental-health awareness. It offers music, film, theatre and exhibitions over the next two weeks and is taking place the third time after smaller events in 2010 and 2011. The festival is being staged in association with See Change, an organisation that fights against discrimination due to mental health issues. First Fortnight is so named because the first two weeks of the year is a period that is generally perceived to be a particularly difficult time for people who suffer from depression or suicidal thoughts.
The festival is intended to create awareness and to get people to accept mental health issues as normal issues.
The main event will be a concert with Cashier No 9, Le Galaxie and Royseven on Sat 14 Jan in the Button Factory. Tickets are EUR 10.
In addition there are a number of “Therapy Sessions” which take place in the Workman’s Club on 04, 06 and 11 Jan. The sessions feature a mix of poetry and spoken word performances accompanied by live music. Tickets are EUR 5.
A Film screenings in the IFI will also take place (on 07 Jan) and a short film screening already took place on 05 Jan. Then there is theatre in the Project Arts Centre and finally there are some free events.
The free events are a number of exhibitions in the Exchange Dublin in Temple Bar and a “Soapbox Session”. The exhibitions are visual art and photography exhibitions from Sinead McDonald, Lemah42, William Hamilton and Mary A Kelly from 04-14 Jan. The Soapbox Sessions is an afternoon of talks on Sat 14 Jan from 14:30 in the Button Factory. Claire Byrne will host a gathering of well-known voices from Irish cultural and political life to share their ideas and bring their personal interpretation of the subject to life through performance, prose, music and all important debate. The Soapbox Session is also a free event. Seemingly you don’t need to get tickets for the free events.
(BTW: My wish from the organisers for next year is a website that is easier to navigate and a PDF that summarises all events!) www.firstfortnight.com

350 YEARS OF PHOENIX PARK
Phoenix Park is 350 years old this year and a whole range of events were promised or indicated. Details are not yet available, but the Press Release was talking about:
The establishment of a Phoenix Park Arboretum; the restoration of the Frame Yard at the Victorian Walled Garden; the establishment of a Phoenix Park archive to be housed in one of the Park Lodges; the Phoenix Park Spring and Winter lecture series; opening up Chesterfield Avenue at weekends from the Phoenix Monument to the Mountjoy roundabout for pedestrians, runners, cyclists, toddlers and to hold family events with a fun street party at Easter; historical re-enactments of motor racing; historical re-enactments of the Duke of Ormond and Lord Chesterfield
exhibitions at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre, Ashtown Castle and some more events. I expect that many of the events are free. The Office of Public Works (OPW) is in charge of Phoenix Park and the OPW is a shining example for an organisation that organises a whole range of great free events. Examples are all the Farmleigh House events and the concerts in Stephen’s Green in the summer etc. I will tell you about all the upcoming free events! And here is some historical information about Phoenix Park: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Park
www.merrionstreet.ie/index.php/2012/01/minister-hayes-announces-phoenix-park-350-celebrations/?cat=12

JAMES JOYCE YEAR
Did you see that the copyright for James Joyce’s work has expired on 01 Jan? 70 years after the death of the copyright holder it expires and the works will become openly accessible. James Joyce’s grandson was fiercely protecting (and monetising) the copyright (Is James Joyce’s estate misusing its copyright?: arstechnica.com/old/content/2006/06/7048.ars) and seemingly didn’t even allow performances at festivities like the Blooms Day, which was only invented to celebrate James Joyce. You can expect that a book of James Joyce performances and recitals to take place this year. David Norris, who loves Joyce, will be kept busy (good that he isn’t burdened with the President’s job so that he can focus on Joyce) and if you love Joyce, you will enjoy lots of great events.

DUBLIN TOURISM GONE – BUT NOT TOTALLY
Dublin Tourism has been closed down as a company and the operation was integrated into Fáilte Ireland we found out on Fri 30 Dec. From 01 Jan Failte Ireland is promoting Dublin and only time will tell if they will do it as well as or better than Dublin Tourism. It makes financial sense to merge the two operations, but you always wonder at mergers like this if the dedicated attention that the one business (Dublin Tourism) was able to give can be upheld in the company with the bigger brief.

FALLON & BYRNE UNABLE TO PAY TAXES
On Fri 30 Dec it was reported that Fallon & Byrne, the super expensive food shop in Exchequer Street is insolvent. The restaurant and gourmet food hall owes 1.4m in taxes and can’t pay the bill. I was surprised when I heard that because if a company that charges such high prices for food can’t be profitable then nobody has a chance anymore. But it seems that the company is indeed making a profit from the handsome 8m they make in turnover, but seemingly some accounting problems meant that they didn’t pay their tax bill in the past. An interim examiner has been appointed and while the shop will continue to trade, there is the possibility that the company will be sold or even closed down. www.rte.ie/news/2011/1230/fallon.html

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 9000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

WALK, TALK & LEARN ENGLISH
Charlotte Bishop an avid user and supporter of the Dublin Event Guide told me recently about her new business. She is offering English conversation classes with a twist: You are learning English while walking the streets and beaches of Dublin, with your English teacher. The business is called ‘Walk n’ Talk English’ and you can find the details on walktalkdublin.tumblr.com You get a tour, get out in the fresh air, get fit, make new friends AND on top of all this you improve your English. Sounds interesting! Class fees are starting from EUR 5 and if you can choose where you want to walk: Beach walks, river walks, street walks, cafe-hopping walks are just a few of the options. Go to walktalkdublin.tumblr.com/

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

GIANT KALEIDOSCOPES – EXCHANGE DUBLIN
Until February: Exchange Dublin, Exchange Street Upper, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. Paul’s Giant Kaleidoscopes is an exhibition by kaleidoscope artist Paul Ga y that will run in the Exchange Dublin from 17 Dec – February. Four giant kaleidoscopes are there for you to explore. Find some more information about the artist and some pictures/videos about the kaleidoscopes: giantkaleidoscopes.com/ and www.facebook.com/pages/Paul-Gay-Giant-Kaleidoscopes/245699112149258
I went to the exhibition last week and it is brilliant! If you are in Temple Bar, definitely drop into the Exchange! exchangedublin.ie/

AFRICAN CULTURAL PROJECT EXHIBITION
05-28 Jan: Central Library, Ilac Centre, Henry Street, Dublin 1
The exhibition “Kaldi and the Dancing Goats” by Sauda Mdahoma will be on display in the Central Library during normal opening hours. Admission is free. It is an exhibition of illustrations by Sari Nordberg from Kaldi and the Dancing Goats, a book about the legend of Ethiopian coffee written by Sauda Mdahoma. The exhibition is on loan from the African Cultural Project, an organisation promoting African educational activity in Ireland. www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/libraries/Events/Pages/exhib_kaldi_and_dancing_goats.aspx

COAL STORY – PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION – COPPER HOUSE
11 Jan – 03 Feb – 10:00-17:00 – The Copper House Gallery, The Copper House, Synge Street, 8, Dublin. – Coal Story, a photographic exhibition by Darek Fortas, is a result of an extensive photographic engagement with the two largest coal mining companies in the European Union located in Silesia, the most industrialised part of Poland. It combines contemporary photography and archival research dating back to the 1960s, when Poland experienced significant economic and industrial expansion. In the early 1980s, coal mines were a major site of struggle and resistance against the communist regime. Workers’ protests resulted in the creation of Solidarity – a workers’ and citizens’ movement under the leadership of Lech Walesa. The coal miners actions eventually led to the collapse of communism and the end of the Cold War.
The Copper House Gallery will launch Coal Story, on Wednesday 11 Jan from 18:00-20:00. thecopperhousegallery.wordpress.com

EPIPHANY or LITTLE CHRISTMAS or WOMEN’S CHRISTMAS
The 06 January is Epiphany. In Spain and in Russia (and possibly in other countries), it is for many the main Christmas Day, i.e. the day when the children get their Christmas presents. In Spain it is the Reyes Magos, the three kings, that bring the presents. Many Christian religions celebrate the arrival of the three wise men (kings) at the birth place of Jesus to bring presents.
In Ireland this day is the last day of the Christmas period for many and Christmas decorations and Christmas trees are usually removed on that day. Schools start again after the 06 January with the Christmas period being terminated now.
Interestingly, another tradition is celebrated in Ireland: The day is also called “Little Christmas” or “Nollaig Bheag” and on that day some people celebrate “Women’s Christmas”. Women’s Christmas (Nollaig na mBan) is still strong in Cork and Kerry and it is so called because on that day the Irish men are meant to take over all household duties for one day and women go out to party with their female friends and relatives. I wonder how this “once a year” help really works out. Maybe the work is just ignored for that day and the woman has to do the work for two days then the next day? :-o

(see Friday section for details)

CAR BOOT SALES – TALLAGHT STADIUM
Sat 07 Jan: 09:00-13:00 – Tallaght Stadium, Whitestown Way, Tallaght, Co. Dublin
In case you got lots of unwanted Christmas presents or if you got new replacements for older, but still sellable goods, you need to find people that want to buy it from you. Perfect place: A Car Boot Sale! Unfortunately there are not many car boot sales left after seemingly Dublin City closed most of them. No more car boot sales in Shelbourne Park or Harold’s Cross Greyhound Stadium, no more Toe Jam Car Boot Sale in the Bernard Shaw Pub. Gone are the Point Village Car Boot Sale, the Belgard Road Car Boot Sale and the one at the Spawell. Bleak picture!
Luckily, though, there is ONE left! The Tallaght Stadium Car Boot Sale takes place every Saturday and seems to be very popular. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line terminal and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 07:00 for buyers from 09:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on www.irishcarboot.ie If you want to buy goods, just come after 09:00.

WOOD TURNING – DEMO, MEETING ETC – TEMPLEOGUE
Sat 07 Jan: 10:00-12:30 – Willington Scout Hall, Templeogue Wood, Templeogue, Dublin 6w. – Alison tells me about an interesting a association and related regular meeting. The Dublin Woodturners Guild meets on the first Saturday of every months. There is a charge of EUR 5 normally, but if people are new to it the Dublin Woodturners (DWT) let you come for a few meetings before you have to decide if you want to join the DWT. So if you want to check it out before deciding go to Templeogue on Saturday. Every month there is a wood turning demonstration and a competition. A library, shop and swap section complements the activities. Wood turning is a fascinating hobby, imagine you can turn a lump of wood into a beautiful decorative piece by just using a knife and a lathe (the fast turning machine that rotates the wood). The event starts at 10:00, but doors open already at 09:15. Between 40 and 80 people are there every month, impressive turn out! Lessons are provided as well (for a small fee) and you don’t need your own lathe, but will be using the studio lathe. If you have never heard about wood turning before, have a look here www.woodworking.co.uk/Technical/Beginners/beginners.html and more information about the meetings in Templeogue you find here www.facebook.com/pages/Dublin-Woodturners/175523589204102 and here www.dublinwoodturners.com/

______This is odd!!______________

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

IRELAND WITHOUT GARDA CARS!?
An odd piece of news was in TheJournal.ie today. It said that rural areas are in danger to be left without Garda cars because existing cars are decommissioned and will not be replaced. County Clare had 21 cars and 8 have been decommissioned, leaving just 13 of which a further 9 are close to reaching the kilometre limits for decommissioning. Could that mean that gardai have to chase after motorised criminals on foot soon? But on the other hand, I wonder why the cars are decommissioned if they haven’t developed a fault/problem yet. Would it not make sense to drive them until they can not be driven anymore? Odd! www.thejournal.ie/rural-areas-to-be-left-without-garda-patrol-cars-321051-Jan2012/ For a non-Irish person it is strange enough to see policemen without a pistol, but to have police without cars would be a step too far in being nice to criminals.

And another odd one:

FORBIDDEN WORDS IN THE DAIL
Did you know that the Irish members of parliament have a “forbidden words” list? It is a) odd that this list is required and b) the words on the list are a strange selection! Interestingly a TD is not allowed to call another TD a communist, even if he were one! I would love to see the full list of forbidden words, but read this list that the Irish Times included in their article. Forbidden are: brat, buffoon, chancer, communist, corner boy, coward, fascist, gurrier, guttersnipe, hypocrite, rat, scumbag, scurrilous and yahoo. Do these words sound particularly offensive? Would you shake in your boots if someone called you a yahoo? The Dail is seemingly on a different planet! www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/2012/0103/1224309737479.html

And another odd one (they are everywhere):

SLAVE LABOUR – GOVERNMENT AUTHORISED
Governments do odd things, sometimes very odd things. The National Internship Scheme was promoted as a job initiative, a way to get people into jobs. Especially people with no experience who are out of a job on Social Welfare were meant to get a chance to gather experience through an internship so that they would be more employable. The intern gets just 200 Euro per month more than social welfare and the employer gets a free worker. The idea of an internship is that you learn a lot and in return give your time for free, but the idea is NOT to employ people cheaply through the scheme. Broadsheet.ie, a satirical news website, showed repeatedly that the National Internship Scheme is a total disaster because nobody does any proper quality control of the jobs. Have a look at this job that was advertised on jobbridge.ie: www.broadsheet.ie/2012/01/03/tuam-it-may-concern/
An internship for a café waiter/waitress? If the café needs staff but can’t afford a properly paid employee they are not a viable business and should close down. Jobbridge is a government authorised invitation to slave labour and is prepping up businesses that are failures.

The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
