Hi all!

Last weekend I was really looking forward to the Chocolate Festival, but I was a bit disappointed when on Saturday the Temple Bar Food Market was just the same market as every week and the Chocolate Festival seemed to have been forgotten (A case of misleading advertisement?). On Sunday there were a good few tents/stands on Meeting House Square and an effort was made, but it was just companies selling their chocolate products. So it was not a bad chocolate market, but “festival” to me means a bit more. So in this first year, I wouldn’t give the “Chocolate Festival” rather low marks, with some lessons learned out of it, next year should be better!
On the flipside, I didn’t expect too much from “Kings of Concrete”! And that event turned out really good! Lots of activities. Lots to watch and a vibrant atmosphere throughout the whole two days. Great!

The long term subscribers might remember that at the end of February – the Dublin Event Guide Community had 800 members at that time – I declared bullish-ly that my vision was to have 1600 members by October. It is now the first day in August and did you check the number of subscribers in the new Event Guide header?? 1648 people are getting this Event Guide every week at the moment. So at the beginning of August we are already 48 over my finger-in-the-air target of 1600 for October. I am impressed! By the way, in just the last week 62 people joined!!!!!

It certainly is an achievement, but as far as I see it, this is YOUR achievement! …and I want to thank each and every one of you. This Event Guide would not be where it is without you recommending it to others, without you spreading the word AND without many of you telling me about free events. Thanks a lot for making it so successful. You wonder where the limit is? I don’t know and I am not concerned about it. Look at it this way: In a city with more than 400,000 households there are a LOT more people that haven’t heard about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)! :-)

So the next goal is 2,000 by Christmas or should I say 2300?? :-) Will you help? Let everyone know about this newsletter, I am sure there are a lot of people in your families, circle of friends, or at your workplace who would benefit from this Event Guide. Tell them!

Just this week I found out that on the Irish discussion board system www.boards.ie, someone suggested that a discussion group where people could list free events should be established. When someone mentioned this Event Guide, the discussion suddenly stopped. Was that because it exactly fulfils that need? ;-) I hope so.

A number of people told me about regular LIVE music events in pubs or other venues that they know about and I will add them over the coming weeks bit by bit. If you know of regular live music events where there is NO admission charge, please let me know. Thanks!

And a request for help: I am looking for an Irish domain hosting company that provides PHP, SQL and, very importantly, allows a large mailing at least once a week (through phplist) to a minimum of 2500-3000 recipients. All this should be available for a low price or in return for a regular favourable mentioning/advertisement in this Event Guide. LA GUITARRA – TICKET COMPETITION

LAKESHORE LOOPS – BOOK COMPETITION

Last week I saw an announcement from Diageo. It said that they intend to add another 10 cents to price of Guinness. The reason given was that this increase is necessary as a response to rising cost of raw materials. The article continued suggesting that the price increase of raw materials would also affect other Diageo-owned brands like Budweiser, Carlsberg, Smithwicks and Harp, as well as Smirnoff vodka, Bailey’s and Johnnie Walker whiskey. Beer is not really my thing, but I do wonder how expensive it can get before people completely stay away from pubs. I don’t know about you, but in the last few months it seems to me that pubs are a lot emptier than they once were!?

I guess it is the job of marketing people to be over-enthusiastic, over-positive and slightly incredible, but when it comes to estimates of event participation, I always get the feeling that the calculations in Ireland are over-over-over-positive. You might remember that I thought that the Urban Beach in George’s Dock was a great idea. Yes, there was room for improvement and the prices charged for taking a little pedal boat for a 20 metre trip in George’s Dock were absolutely outrageous, but the atmosphere was good (especially on a sunny day) and it was something different than the usual events. However, today I read that the Docklands Authority announced that over 45,000 people visited the Urban Beach over the 14 days. More than 3000 people per day (including rainy weekdays)??? Maybe a little over the top! :-)

The Farmleigh Summer Season is in full swing, but if you want to goto any of the Drive-in movies in August or to the readings and recitals that will take place in August, you HAVE to register for tickets! The Farmleigh Affair Festival (03-04 August) is completely booked out and I was too late as well to get tickets, but the Drive-In movies (09+10 August) and some other events are still bookable for free. Originally the deadline for tickets was 25 July, but it seems there are still tickets available, so don’t delay!!!

The IADT MAVis summer shows at the Temple Bar Gallery & Studios are coming to an end. In three weeks the MAVis will be moving to the LAB on Foley Street, so this is one of the last opportunities to visit a MAVis show that takes place in Studio Six.

“OPENING DOORS” – MERMAID ARTS CENTRE
An exhibition of work by Migrant Rights Centre Ireland’s Domestic Workers Support Group and artists Susan Gogan and Orla O’Flanagan entitled ‘Opening Doors – Migrant Domestic Workers Speak Through Art’ will be on show at the Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray from 30 July – 23 Aug. “The show features work in photography and textiles and focuses on migrant domestic workers’ negotiation of the i ntimate spaces of other people’s homes, where they work. ANITA DI BIANCO – PROCESS ROOM, IMMA
Anita Di Bianco, who is currently participating in the Artists’ Residency Programme at IMMA will exhibit from 30 July to 10 Aug in The Process Room at IMMA.
The exhibition from Wednesday 30 July to Sunday 3 August 2008is called “Der Versteller (Dreaming and Drugs and Ballad in Plain D)”. From from Tuesday 05 August to Sunday 10 August 2008 “Letters from the Unsuspecting and Betty Talks” will be on show. Anita Di Bianco’s films examine, modify and re-work existing and re-imagined characters from cinema and literature – excerpting and adapting texts of such writers as Gertrude Stein, Jean Gênet, and Marguerite Yourcenar. Five of her recent films will be screened in loop over the course of the coming week and a half.

NORTHSIDE MUSIC FESTIVAL 08
The Northside Music Festival will run from 29 July – 28 August and performances will take place across the Northside of the city in various locations both indoors and outdoors. All music events are free.
On Sat 02 Aug at 14:30 the brilliant salsa band “Havana Son” will play outdoors in John Paul Park in Cabra at the Parkside Sports and Recreation Centre.
“Havana Son brings us into the heart of Cuba with their authentic take on ‘son’, the predecessor of modern day salsa. At the very core of their musical sound are the double act of Cuban guitar (tres) and Spanish guitar, accompanied by congas, bongos, campana/cowbell, upright bass, trumpet and the powerful vocals of Evelio Galan bringing the music of his native city Havana to Dublin’s Northside.”

BOTANICAL PAINTING – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
“Botanical Painting” will take place in Cowshed Theatre or outdoors in Farmleigh House on Sat 02 Aug at 13:30 for 7-9 year olds and at 15:30 for 10-12 year olds. Focusing on the plants and flowers around Farmleigh house, participants will work outdoors (weather permitting) using acrylic paints to paint Farmleigh in it’s beautiful setting. YOUR SCIENCE YOUR SAY – SCIENCE GALLERY
The Science Gallery in the Naughton Building at the back of Trinity College (near Pearse Street) is inviting to “Your Science Your Say”, which will be available from 30 Jul – 16 Aug. “Watch three scientists explain their research. Vote for what you think is the best pitch. The winner will receive EUR 4,000 towards their research and your vote helps shape the research agenda. Your Science Your Say is an experimental project by Ian Brunswick, as part of his M. Sc. thesis in Science Communication at Dublin City University. Visitors to Science Gallery can watch the three pitches and also record their own video feedback using the custom built Your Science Your Say polling booth on the ground floor of Science Gallery. STREETBALL IRELAND FINALS
On Sat 02 Aug from 13:00-18:00 the finals of the 7th StreetBall Championship will take place in Mountjoy Park (If it rains StreetBall Nationwide moves to Mount Temple School, Malahide Road, Dublin 3. But I am not sure if this “rain escape” only applied to the heats or if it applies as well for the final.). Streetball is Basketball in a Street environment. Different events on the day are a Kids open fun day with Basketball Session, Football exhibition games, Face painting and more. There are music performances and DJ Funk Master Lee is spinning the discs. TRADITION:DL – PAVILLION THEATRE, DUN LAOGHAIRE
The Pavillion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire is inviting to TRADITION:DL, a traditional music festival, this weekend from Friday until Sunday. The Pavillion Theatre usually doesn’t do “free”, so you might wonder why I am mentioning it here. The reason is that all weekend there will be live traditional sessions in the “Gastropub” across the road from the theatre. Musicians and singers are encouraged to join in and to bring their instruments. Admission is Free and the sessions take place from 15:00-17:00 on Sat and Sun and from 22:00 till late on Fri, Sat and Sun. The later sessions are “post show” sessions and I would expect that you find hugely talented musicians taking part in them.

MOVIES ON MEETING HOUSE SQUARE
The Open Air Movie Screening on Meeting House Square on Sat 02 Aug (22:30) will be “Some like it Hot” by Billy Wilder.You need to get free tickets before and you can get them from the Temple Bar Information Office (they are available since 26 July and could be all handed out, but it is worth trying). Tickets can be collected from the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. On the night a small number of people without tickets will be let in if ticket holders don’t show up. So, you could try getting in that way, even if you don’t have tickets.

HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD
If you have never experienced it, you should take the opportunity this Sunday 03 August to visit the Smithfield Horse Market. I mentioned this last month and will repeat what I said then:
Only once a month, every first Sunday of each month this unique event takes place. Close to sunrise, Smithfield Square fills with hundreds of horses, as well as scores of dealers, keen to make some cash on a few quick sales. The scene is like no other in Ireland and if you survive the early hours, I am sure you will leave this event full of stories to tell to your friends and families. Mind the galloping horses and the horse droppings and stay safe if you go there, but have fun and tell me all about it afterwards! :-)
Another reason for going could be that for a while already there are plans to move or close this market completely. That means that you never know how many more opportunities you have to experience the Horse Market.

TRIATHLON – DOCKLANDS
The Focus Ireland Triathlon is taking place on Sunday 03 August from 09:00. It starts and finishes at Grand Canal Square near Pearse Street. The participants have to swim 750 metres in the Grand Canal Basin, cycle 20 km and run for 5 km. So, as far as Triathlon’s are concerned it is not the most challenging Sprint Triathlon, but I am glad I don’t have to do it! :-) 400 athletes will take part and unfortunately it is now too late for you to register for this year, but you can still watch the event and maybe mentally prepare you for taking part next year! If you want to watch, then the Grand Canal Square will be a good place as the transition area and start and finish are there. When writing this Event Guide on Thursday night, the Focus Ireland website said “We are at the moment very short on volunteers if this is something that you would be interested in please contact, email: events@focusireland.ie or phone: (01) 8815963 to let us know.” I am not sure if this message is still relevant, but between 70 and 100 volunteers are needed from 07:00 until 13:00 and if you have time and are interested, maybe give them a call on Friday to check if they still need people. FARMLEIGH AFFAIR – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
The headline festival this week is Farmleigh Affairs. However, it is a rather unusual headline festival because not toooo many people know about it AND it limits the number of visitors so significantly that it will stay a festival for a few (in relative terms!). I am not sure how many tickets were available, but they are all long gone and I wonder how the organisers will handle the fact that bad weather could limit the numbers of ticket holders who turn up significantly and the fact that some bands might be more popular than others and some times during the day might be busier than others. A free festival has failed if it is not full. But unless the organisers have some flexibility build into the organisation and are prepared to let people in if the venue doesn’t fill there is a huge risk in a ticketed free open air event.
Anyway, I didn’t get any tickets, so I won’t be able to tell you next week how all went, but maybe someone could let me know during the week how the event turned out? I know that some of the readers of this Event Guide did get free tickets (Miren!? :-) ), so I will provide all relevant information here.
The event will take place in the Pleasure Grounds of Farmleigh House and it will run from 12:00 to 19:30 on Sun 03 Aug and on Mon 04 Aug.
Farmleigh House is owned by the state and managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW). The house is in Phoenix Park at the “Castleknock Gate” side of the park.
The organisers write “With two days of performances from many of the worlds leading musicians, minutes from Dublin’s centre yet in one of its most beautiful garden settings, and tickets entirely free, the Farmleigh Affair is not to be missed.” Hmm, they forget that it is not MY decision of I miss it or not if the tickets are gone! But they continue “Building on Farmleigh Affair’s growing reputation as the strongest world music line up of the summer , we’ve assembled some exotic musical blooms to further adorn Farmleigh’s scenic Pleasure Grounds, with artists travelling from France, The UK, Congo, Cape Verde, Portugal, The Gambia and The US to perform over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Joining them are leading groups from right across the Irish spectrum, from choral to traditional music.” Wellll, “strongest world music line up”, that definitely is a questionable statement with the Festival of World Cultures coming up!!

Despite the ticketed Farmleigh Affairs taking place at Farmleigh House, the Farmleigh Food Market will run from 10:00-17:15 on Sun 03 in the Courtyard and the Farmyard of Farmleigh House. This suggests that there are no early ticket checks on the approach road.

ROLLERBLADING IN PHOENIX PARK
The Rollerblading “Meet&Train” is meeting this Sunday again in Phoenix Park. We were between 15 and 20 people in the beginning, but lately there are only 4-6, so if you remember where you hid the Roller Blades/Inline Skates, get them out before the summer is over and give it a try again. If not more people come every week, we will need to terminate the Meet/Train. :-( There are people to teach and help you if you need some help. BANK HOLIDAY
Keep in mind that Monday is a bank holiday in Ireland. If you only arrived recently, then you will be surprised to see that virtually ALL shops are open and that opening hours are the same as Sunday’s.
For all car owners: On Bank Holiday Mondays, Dublin City does not enforce Pay&Display parking, so you can park in the City Centre for free. But make sure that you don’t park in loading bays or on car park spaces for handicapped drivers.

Howard Linnane had shown short films for free in the Tapas bar Havana in Georges Street, Dublin 2 for seven weeks, however his “tenancy” in Havana came to an end and he is now looking for a new venue. THE FOX – SCARLET CLOAK THEATRE COMPANY
This is NOT a free event, but Eoin Langford, who is one of the cast in this performance, helped me hugely earlier this year when I some legal advise in the context with this Event Guide, so in return I am more than happy to list his event here. Scarlet Cloak Theatre Company presents “The Fox (Volpone)” by Ben Jonson. A clever con man, a cunning sidekick, three dupes, a beautiful woman and a fortune in gold . . .What could go wrong? The play will be performed in T36, The Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square, Dublin 1 from Tues 05 Aug to Sat 09 Aug at 20:00 each day. Tickets are EUR 15/EUR 10. In addition there is a matinee performance on Sat 09 Aug at 14:00 with tickets for EUR 10.

CHALLENGING MYTHS/MISINFORMATION ABOUT ASYLUM SEEKERS & REFUGEES
The workshop “Challenging Myths and Misinformation about Asylum Seekers and Refugees” with Ismael Khurdi will take place on Wednesday 06 August 2008 at 17:00 at The Lab, Dublin City Council Arts Office, Foley Street, Dublin 1. Admission is free. It is a free workshop that provides the opportunity to: question definitions of refugee, asylum seeker and economic immigrant; challenge stereotypes and offensive labels applied to these groups; look at the meanings and perceptions of ‘home’; and facilitate the exchange of personal and professional experiences.
Ismale Khudri is an artist who has exhibited his work in Ireland and is participating in an Artist in Community awarded project, a project based at the Mosney Reception Centre for Asylum Seekers, led by artist Anne Kelly and supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and Create. PUBLIC SPEAKING SESSION – JUNIOR CHAMBER
Junior Chamber International will be organizing a free public speaking training session on Wednesday 06 August from 19:00 at the Irish Recruitment Consultants Office (11 Ely Place, Dublin 2). This event is open to the public and is an opportunity to practise your public speaking skills in an informal environment. CHILDREN OF MANILA – DOCUMENTARY SCREENING
About a year ago Alessandro Molatore was looking for funds to produce a short documentary together with Genny Carraro, Johanna Budzilowicz and Luca Rocchini, about street children in the Philippines and the charities The Children’s Relief Fund (CRF) and the Papa John Centre. Many people came to a concert to raise the money and as a thank you for the generous support and to show the result the documentaries will now be shown to the public. “Children of Manila” and “The Cemetery People” are the films and the screening will take place on 06 Aug at 20:00 at the Button Factory in Temple Bar. Admission is free and there will be a DJ and a club night after the screening from 23:00. Alessandro is specifically inviting everybody and not just the original supporters! Copies of the films will be available to buy on the night with all money going to the Children’s Relief Fund. (Thanks Niamh for letting me know about this event!)

On Sunday 17 August, Marlay Park becomes the biggest classical venue of the year as up to 20,000 people flock to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Park with exciting entertainment for all the family presented by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Park features family events from 14:00-16:00, movies on big screen and in the evening the 48 piece Slovak Festival Orchestra and a guest appearance by award winning Irish Tenor Sean Costello and internationally acclaimed Soprano, Celine Byrne. Traditionally the bank holidays weekends are a little disappointing as far as big events/festivals are concerned. This has probably to do with the fact that all people from the countryside evacuate Dublin. ;-) And many Dubliners and foreigners are leaving the country for a long weekend or so. But, hey, there are still a few things to do. So if you are staying in Dublin, make sure that you don’t stay at home! :-)
