Hi all!

This week I am hopelessly delayed with my preparations for writing the Event Guide. Normally I try to do a bit of work on Tuesday evening, another bit on Wednesday evening and then there is the eight hours through the night on Thursday. This week I had to work for my day job on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday evening and now is Thursday late evening and I am just starting.

Nevertheless, I will try to report on all the things that will be on this coming weekend and I hope you will find something to do again. The weather forecast is promising, so get out and enjoy Dublin!

I was at Urban Beach last weekend and it was really good. The sound of water, screaming kids, lots of sand and lots of people and sun it nearly felt like a REAL beach! Go over to George’s Dock if you have a bit of time!!
Apart from Urban Beach I went to the Circus Festival in Temple Bar, but the weather didn’t play ball on Saturday. I saw the show of Mr Toon and liked it (He disappeared into a giant green balloon. :-) Lots of fun.) However, I think that Temple Bar events on Temple Bar Square or in the Temple Bar Old Town area just don’t have the right environment to shine! The Meeting House Square is great, but the rest. Hmmmm. I have to admit as well that I miss what the Temple Bar Diversion Festival was over the last two summers. It was just BRILLIANT and this year is just no comparison. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not ungrateful, the Temple Bar organisation is doing a LOT more than most other trader organisations, but a comparison does come to mind after the previous brilliant Diversion festivals.
And a final comment: Dublin City Events. What can I say? As always Dublin City is doing a lot and great stuff, but don’t manage to pull the masses. Viking Festival, Hebert Park Day Out, Urban Garden, always the same. Good event, but the visitors are staying away. I have commented before on the marketing and the advertisement of Dublin City Events and I think the Sea Stallion Departure/Viking Festival on the same weekend was a great example: GOOD marketing by Dublin Docklands, BAD marketing by Dublin City. LOTS of people near the IFSC, not so many people at the Dublin City location of the Viking Festival. Please go to Dublin City Events, because with visitor numbers like for the Urban Garden, I am afraid that the continuation of such events might have to be re-considered.
Ohh and something that left me speechless – and don’t ask me who is ultimately responsible for this: Urban Garden is promoting nature, planting of plants, having a garden etc. And I would see definite synergies with a (growing and still a bit struggling) farmers market there. However on the day Urban Garden takes place on Smithfield Plaza, the farmers (without any notice or information at their indoor area in Smithfield) stayed at home. Why? I don’t know! Someone was wondering if Dublin City asked them to stay away. :-O But why? And why did the farmers not at least hang up signs telling interested customers that they will be back the next day or next week? :-S

Enough ranting and enough about last week. Here are some really great news as well:

I got another very welcome donation, this time from Padraig S. Thanks a lot! With the recent donations, I will embark on a project in the coming weeks, which should simplify the sending of this Event Guide and will hopefully reduce the problems with Spam filters further.

FLAMENCO WORKSHOP
Yes a Sólo Flamenco workshop again! Last week I told you that I got again a free pair of tickets and will surprise the winner with the news tomorrow :-) , so I will tell you the name of him or her next week.
If you ever wanted to try out Flamenco, then THIS is your chance! The workshop is with Felipe de Algeciras, an acclaimed Spanish flamenco dancer, choreographer and teacher. And I hear that this might be the last workshop for Felipe in Dublin and will definitely be his last for this year since he will be busy for the rest of the year. So take the opportunity and dance some Flamenco with Felipe de Algeciras and Solo Flamenco.

CALL CUTTA IN A BOX – PLAY/PERFORMANCE
Last week the Project Arts Centre made two pairs of free tickets available for this event and the winners are Sarah Quinn and Dolores Pias. Congratulations! I plan to go to this intriguing play/performance before it is over and if you hurry you can still get the discount that the Project Arts Centre is offering us!
Listen to his scenario: “You are shown to a room into an office building where the telephone is already ringing. You answer the phone, and you are caught up in a conversation with a voice that has a strange accent. You sit down at a table in front of a computer monitor and your telephone partner sits the same way, 10,000 kilometers away from you. The voice belongs to a call centre employee at Descon Ltd. in Kolkata, India.”
This is the story around the play/performance of “Rimini Protocol” which is taking place at the moment in the Dublin Docklands Development Authority office, Custom House Quay, Dublin 1 (beside Sean O’Casey Bridge).
I still can’t imagine what the play is and how it “works”. But I think that is great! So, give it a go!!! :-) The Project Arts Centre (www.project.ie), in cooperation with the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, is presenting this play and says “..an experience you will never forget: Call Cutta In A Box – An International Telephone-Play”.
The play is taking place from 01 July – 26 July from 14:00-19:00 every day (except Sundays). It lasts just about an hour and will start anew every hour.
For all other Dublin Event Guide Community Members or if you don’t want to leave it to luck, the Project Arts Centre is offering a discount. The shows normal price is EUR 10, but if you quote “EUR 5 offer” when you book over the phone on 01-881 9613, you can watch the play for half the normal price. APPROVAL FOR U2’s CLARENCE HOTEL PLANS
The U2 members Bono and The Edge did finally get the ok to re-develop the Clarence Hotel in Temple Bar/Wellington Quay. The planning inspector in charge had recommended against an approval, but the planning authority (An Bord Pleanála) ignored his recommendation, when Bono and The Edge threatened that they will have to close the hotel if they don’t get the ok.
The Georgian Society and other heritage groups had opposed the plan as most of the art deco hotel, and several Georgian buildings, will effectively be demolished. Most of the 1930s hotel, four Georgian buildings, and a Victorian building will be “remodelled” and a huge glass atrium will be built over the new structure. The new Clarence Hotel is intended to become one of the top ten hotels in the world.
I am not too sure if another outrageously expensive hotel is needed in Dublin and I have my doubts that demolishing these buildings along the Liffey is a good idea. But maybe they won’t be missed too much? I will have a look at them next time I am at that end. The Clarence Hotel is near the corner of Wellington Quay with Parliament Street. The back entrance is on Eustace Street in Temple Bar.

You might have heard that Ryanair has announced during the week that after years and years of adding new destinations and increasing flights, they will reduce the numbers of flights this winter for the first time and will even stop flying to some destinations. I looked at flight prices recently and have seen a significant increase. (Actually the flight price is still 1 cent, but the luggage charges and credit card fees etc are so expensive now that Ryanair will see me less!) What surprised me is that a route like the one to Warszawa is being cancelled. I remember last year that ALL flights to Poland even in winter and especially around Christmas were totally booked out and that people were prepared to pay massive prices.

What is the consequence of less flights and higher prices? For some of us it will mean, we will spend more time in Dublin. But no reason to panic! :-) The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will tell you were all the interesting events happen AND by going to free events, you will save money that you then can invest in a few flights. :-P

I told you last week about Farmleigh House and about the “Farmleigh House Summer Season” full of events. All of the events are free, but all concerts and the Drive-in.-Movies are free, but ticketed. The required tickets for the August events can be requested until 25 July, so if you are interested in any of the events in Farmleigh House, I suggest that you check www.farmleigh.ie, decide what events in August and September you would like to go and then request your tickets for the August events (in about 3 weeks you can start requesting tickets for the September events).

FRANCOISE RIO – ALLIANCE FRANCAISE
Exhibition. Francoise Rio studied painting at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). She also took classes at l’École du Louvre.
From 1964 onwards, she travelled the world (Europe, North and South America, North Africa, India and Polynesia). All these travels, impressions, atmospheres are largely depicted in her paintings.

TADHG MCSWEENEY – THE LAB

JOE MALLON & KAREN WILSON – ZOZIMUS GALLERY

DAMIEN O’CONNELL – MONSTER TRUCK
Monster Truck Gallery presents ‘Libertempo’, an exhibition of installation and photographic work by Damien O’Connell. The installation work for this exhibition consists of miniature models of empty rooms, which correspond directly with the photographic images. Here, the viewer is presented with a curious situation, compelled to investigate further and peer through a tiny window to observe the miniature interior. The exhibition runs from 17 July-29 July. CATHERINE BARRAGRY PERFORMS “KILLER HEELS” – THISISNOTASHOP
“Killer Heels” is a two hour performance in which a hooded figure stands as though wearing imaginary heels. This small but intense gesture references popular culture and ritual practices. STELLA DORE – SEBSTIAN GUINNESS GALLERY
Urban/graffiti art curator, Stella Dore, brought London’s most progressive and original street artists together for a groundbreaking show. The artists include Eine, I-Lib and Eelus and they will be painting inside and outside of the gallery. The exhibition showcases seventeen leading UK urban artists. FEARGAL WARD & MIRANDA DRISCOLL – THE JOINERY
The Joinery is an experimental space consisting of a lens-based gallery, artists’ studios and photo studio on Arbour Hill in Stoneybatter.From 17-31 July, The Joinery will show work by Feargal Ward and Miranda Driscoll entitled ‘Sit Still’. “The exhibition uses photography, video and projected imagery to encompass themes of visual displacement and secrecy, urging the viewer to question the way we see and think of photographic images.”

CURIOSITY CABINET – ORIGINAL PRINT GALLERY
From 17 July – 01 September Black Church Print Studio will present “Curiosity Cabinet” at the Original Print Gallery, 4 Temple Bar. “The Curiosity Cabinet, a display box measuring 212 x 54 x 8 cm, is a new initiative run by the Studio that aims to foster young emerging talent. Following an open call for entries, the three winners chosen to display their work in the Curiosity Cabinet are Niamh O’Beirne, Grace O’Neill and Leigh San Juan. Sahaja Yoga is a unique method of meditation based on an experience called Self Realization that can occur within each human being. THE ROSE FESTIVAL – ST ANNE’S PARK
This yearly festival in St. Anne’s Park in Raheny will take place on Sat 19 and Sun 20 July (10:30-18:00). It is a Dublin City Event, so to find details requires a bit of detective work, but I was successful. And one thing is certain: the event will be well organised and worth a visit. TECHNOTHREADS – SCIENCE GALLERY
Have you seen the spray on dress? Or the dress that hugs you when instructed by a loved one? Or the printed dress (this one fascinated me most!)? If you haven’t all this, this week is your VERY LAST chance to visit the TechnoThreads exhibition in the Science Gallery. The exhibition will close on the 26 July, so if you want to see it, do go this weekend! The Science Gallery in the Naughton Building at the back of Trinity College (near Pearse Street DART Station).
The exhibition, running from 26th April – 26th July 2008, offers you a glimpse into the future of fashion in a world where Biotech and Nanotech are combined with traditional craft and Haute Couture skills.” Admission is FREE. URBAN BEACH – GEORGE’S DOCK
“Life is a Beach!” is the theme for Dublin Dockland’s Urban Beach. George’s Dock (just behind the main IFSC buildings along the Liffey and right beside the chq building) will be transformed into Dublin’s first Urban Beach. The organiser’s description says “This tropical oasis will be the home to sizzling summer activities for the whole family. Complete with beach cabins, showers, lounge chairs, beach umbrellas, and a refreshment beach hut, the beach will have daily activities to suit everyone’s fancy. Kiddies will have their own ‘baby beach’ area for making sandcastles. Spend lunchtime practising yoga or tai chi, play a relaxing game of chess, try your hand at boules or bocce or just soak in the sunshine. Oh the lazy, hazy days of summer, let’s hope we have some!”
I had a look at the Urban Beach while it is still “under construction” and I will definitely go there again over the next two weeks. The “beach” is on the platform in George’s Dock and I am interested to see how the finished scene will look like. An interesting idea! Pity that the weather in Ireland is not the most supportive for such good ideas. The Urban Beach will take place from 04 July -20 July from 12:00-20:00 every day.
As far as evening events are concerned I found this list for the remaining themed beach parties: Brazilian Night (18 July), Salsa Night (19 July). All special events are free, but there is limited capacity, so you should come early. www.dublindocklands.ie/urbanbeach

FRESH FILM FORUM
On Sat 19 July from 11:00-13:00 the Fresh Film Forum takes place. It is part of the Lights Out Festival, a film festival for young people. If you are interested in becoming a successful young filmmaker, you should attend this forum. “The forum will be hosted by former and current winners of the Fresh Film Festival: Donal Foreman, Helena Doyle, Patrick Ryan, Justine Stafford, Bryan O’Sullivan and Santana Hernandez-Power. At this special event, you will get a chance to watch films made by these talented young filmmakers, who will then share their knowledge of the filmmaking process and chart how they progressed from festival winners to film students and beyond!” The Forum is free and open to all but you have to reserve your place in advance with the IFI box office on 01 679 3477.

MOVIES ON MEETING HOUSE SQUARE
The Open Air Movie Screening on Saturday (19 July) in Temple Bar will take place at 22:30 and the film will be “Annie Hall”. You need to get free tickets before and you can get them from the Temple Bar Information Office (they are available since 12 June and could be all handed out, but it is worth trying). Tickets can be collected from the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2. Open Mon-Fri 09:00-17:30, Sat 10:00-18:00, Sun 12:00-15:00. www.templebar.ie/home_nav_2_t_13.html. On the night a small number of people without tickets will be let in if ticket holders don’t show up. So, you could try getting in that way, even if you don’t have tickets.

SUMMER STORIES DAY – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
Farmleigh in association with Children’s Books Ireland presents a fun-packed celebration of tall tales, potty poetry and ingenious illustration for all the family to enjoy! The event is taking place on 20 July from 10:00-17:00. Come and join some of Ireland’s most talented children’s authors, poets, illustrators and storytellers for a day of readings, workshops and performances that are sure to entertain and inspire. Brianóg Brady Dawson will be reading from her wonderful Danny books, Joe O’Brien will be talking to fans of Alfie Green and those who fancy a giggle will be able to hear Gabriel Fitzmaurice perform his Really Rotten Rhymes. Ronke Arogundade will introduce her audience to the magic of African folklore, whilst storytellers Jack Lynch, Len Graham and Eddie Lenihan will be spinning yarns from closer to home. Niamh Sharkey (I’m a Happy Hugglewug) and Adrienne Geoghegan (Fancy That) will also be on hand to pass on some tips to aspiring illustrators. Staged in locations in and around Farmleigh House, events are suitable for a range of ages from 3-12 years. There will also be a Children’s Bookshop in the Conservatory with a vast array of wonderful titles available to choose from. Every event is free, but places are limited, so you should arrive early!

CZECH MOVIES
Every second week a group of volunteers, sponsored by the Czech Embassy, organise the screening of a Czech film in 33 – 35 Upper O’Connell Street, Dublin 1. The screening starts at 16:30 and admission is free. All films are Czech with English subtitles and are all-time classics and new movies from the Czech Republic.
This week’s film on the 20 July is “Snowdrop Festival” or “Slavnosti snezenek” (1984), a comedy based on a true story captured by the world famous writer Bohumil Hrabal. czechmovies.blog.com/

TOYS OF YESTERDAY FAIR – SANDYFORD
The regular “Collector’s Association Toys of Yesterday fair” is taking place again on Sunday 20 July from 11:00-16:00 in the Sandyford Community Centre (Lamb’s Cross, Dublin 18, Tel: 01 2959149). The event is not totally free, but admission is only EUR 1 and all proceeds go to Focus Ireland. From plastic soldiers via doll-houses to railway sets you can find all these toys form your childhood that you long forgot about. If you’re interested in selling or exchanging toys at the fair, you can contact the Collectors Association on 2852308 or 4576751.

FILM SCREENING – HUGH LANE GALLERY
For the summer the “Classic at Noon” Concerts are suspended, but will resume again in September. In the meantime, however, the Hugh Lane Gallery is continuing their commendable range of educational and/or cultural free events. On Sunday 20 July a film screening will take place. Starting at 13:30 the National Geographic Film “Last Voyage of the Lusitania” will be shown. Narrated by actor Martin Sheen, this documentary goes beneath the surface to try and shed some light on this tragedy that today still sits on a shroud of uncertainty. ANALOG CONCERTS – GRAND CANAL SQUARE
Analog is a new music festival in Dublin based in Grand Canal Square in Dublin’s Docklands (South Side in Pearse Street). The square will be home to Analog’s Main Stage. Other events will take place in the chq Building near George’s Dock and in the Sugar Club. www.analogconcerts.ie provides the full festival information. There is one concert for which free tickets were available. Unfortunately no more tickets are available. However there MIGHT be the possibility that you get access if the ticket holders don’t show up. How high the likelihood of this is, is something I can’t assess, but you could try it. *Sunday Jazz will be provided in The Globe in George’s Street every Sunday from 17:00.
*Jazz in The George in George’s Street is performed every week from 16:30-18:00 by the Jazz Band Zrazy.
*Sunday Roast is the event in Thomas Reads The Oak in Dame Street/Parliament Street every Sunday from 19:00. On offer are free live music, games & roast potatoes.

INSPIRED BY CHOCOLATE! – TEMPLE BAR CULTURAL TRUST
The Designer Mart at Cow’ Lane is displaying newly commissioned work as part of Temple Bar’ Chocolate Festival (25 to 27 July 2008). The exhibition includes chocolate jewellery pieces by Jenni Duggan, Raasay Jones and Ann Tyrrell as well as photography, prints, glass sculptures and textile pieces by Carol Eakins, Katharine Quin, Simon Bradley, Naoimh Tuohy, Mark Lynch, Mark Lynch and Fiona Archibald. All items are on display in the Information Centre, Temple Bar Cultural Trust, 12 East Essex Street from 21 to 27 July 2008 and are available for sale.

SOUTH DOCKS FESTIVAL
From 21-25 July the South Docks Festival is taking place in the Pearse Street Area with the main focal point in St. Andrew’s Resource Centre in Pearse Street. There are a good few events taking place, but they are targeted more at people living in the area, so if you do live in that area and don’t know yet what to do next week and want to meet some of your neighbours, let me know and I will get the programme to you. Howard Linnane and the tapas bar Havana in Georges Street, Dublin 2 are presenting a Café Cinema event, where quality short films are screened for free every week. The event is taking place on Tues from 16:30-18:00 and a selection of short films will be screened in the café. LOUISE MANIFOLD – SGNAL ARTS CENTRE
The Signal Arts Centre in Bray invites to an exhibition by Louise Manifold entitled “Bullswool”’, a term that refers to stolen clothes as well as exaggerated or unreliable talk which the artist uses as a metaphor for human shape shifting and transformation. The exhibition begins on Tuesday 22 July 2008 with an opening reception on Friday 25 July from 19:00-21:00 and will run until Sunday 3 August 2008. PINT AND PICTURE FILM CLUB
Howard Linnane (086 3614787) is – in co-operation with the pub “Russells of Ranelagh” – running a film club. The film club shows screenings of Irish short films and feature films for free on the big screen in “Russells” in Ranelagh.
The next event is on Wed 23 July at 14:00. The feature film next week will most likely be “Accelerator” (dir Vinny Murphy, 1999), however, please ring Howard prior to going there to make sure that this will be really the film to be screened. (Russells of Ranelagh is on the main street, just down from the Luas station and across from the Triangle).

DAMBÈ (IRISH/MALIAN CONCERT) – TEMPLE BAR
A night of Irish and African musical celebrations is taking place on 23 July as part of the Documentary Film – Dambé – The Mali Project. For one night only Malian, Tuareg and nomadic culture and music will be celebrated with a line up of special Irish and Malian musicians from the film. Artists performing on the night include Afel Bocoum and Alkibar, Liam O’Maonlaí, Paddy Keenan and Tinariwen plus special guest Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh. This is a free event and all profits will go towards the Tuareg fund for development Taghreft Tinariwen and the hospital in Niafunké (hometown of Afel and Alkibar). Tickets are available since Monday 30 June at the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Dublin 2 and as far as I know all tickets are gone by now. BABYLON RADIO – LAUNCH PARTY
The BabylonRadio Launch Party will celebrate the launch of the new Babylon Radio Website and the BabylonRadio Webradio station. The event is for everyone who wants to “celebrate cultures and promote integration”. If you are looking for friendly people, fun, multicultural music, then the Babylon Radio Launch Party is for you.
BabylonRadio.com will be broadcasting music from all around the world and focuses on promoting people/artists living in Ireland.
