Hi all!

I don’t know where the time went again, but I guess it has to do with the fact that there are sooo many events. I started writing this Event Guide at 19:00 on Thursday and now at 16:00 on Friday I just about get finished. That is 20 hours of non-stop work through the night with no sleep. :-o Something needs to change!

[ad]

I had a brilliant training last week in London. The training was about wealth creation. I know that sounds a little strange, but the bottom line is to use smart strategies and to have the right mindset to sort out your personal finances and then to continue on a stable basis. I have done similar training before and did run a training course with about 40 participants earlier in the year. This time I learned even more smart bits and because the organisations that run big training courses think Ireland is a bit of a lost cause at the moment, I will run another course for everybody that is interested. It will be at some stage between now and Christmas and I will tell you more in the coming weeks. But if you already know that your financial blueprint could do with some sorting out, send me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with BLUEPRINT in the subject. The more interest I get, the sooner I will run the course.

All students are back in colleges and universities and I wonder if some of you could help me a bit to let the other students around you know about the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. I remember when I was in University. Knowing about free entertainment/events was hugely helpful when on a limited budget. Could you maybe print a few of these A4 pages out and hang them up at strategically good palaces? www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf Thanks!!

And for the rest: Tell your friends, colleagues, families about the Dublin Event Guide and help them to subscribe: The website is at www.dublineventguide.com where your friends can subscribe to the weekly newsletter in the sign-up form on the right. On the Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide they only have to click on JOIN EMAIL LIST and while they are there, they should click on LIKE. These are the preferred methods, but if they are not convenient, then your friends can sign up as well by sending an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject SUBSCRIBE DEG.

Can you hang up this updated A4 posters in your company, corner shop, school, club?

We now more than 6300 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and it would be really great if we could be as big on Facebook as we are on this distribution list. The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is something I added to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. This week it is a clip from an illusionist. It is not magic in the classical sense, but it is amazingly good and for many of us having a “WOW!” moment is making us feel good as well. Do you agree? Check it out here www.ted.com/talks/marco_tempest_the_magic_of_truth_and_lies_on_ipods.html

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

When it comes to donations, I appreciate the constant and continual Irish trickle of rain. Instead of monsoon-like weather conditions (no rain for a long time and then lots). This week it was like a summer day in a monsoon country: NO donation. I hope for a trickle again next week! :-)
If you want to join the list of the much appreciated supporters of the Dublin Event Guide, go to www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm I appreciate ANY help. EUR 12 would be great, but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost.

To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more. – I am giving 25 hours every week for no pay, so that you get the Dublin Event Guide every week. I need you to help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year. Where else can you get sooo much value for soo little money!? You can give much more than EUR 12 or you can give less, but EUR 12 is a big help for me and not too much for you. If you have a company that would like to sponsor the Event Guide talk to me!
www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads here or on the website, then please note that only if YOU click on the link in this newsletter/e-zine AND then buy or order (for example, order books from bookdepository) a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here to start your purchase, I don’t get anything either. Have a look at the website www.dublineventguide.com and if you want to book a hotel at hotels.com or buy something from any of the other advertisers, make sure you click on the ad on the website just before you buy, only then I will get some money for the ads.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Sooo many events to choose from this week. The weekend is super busy. There is the Absolut Fringe Festival with a few free events, then the Farmleigh House Family Activity Weekend (Ideal fir families), the Dragon Boat Regatta in the Liffey (not something you see every day, so I would love to see it), the Dublin Fashion Festival is more for the better looking (i.e. female) Event Guide readers. The Soccerfest and the Kitefest in Phoenix Park sound like interesting spectacles. The CareerZoo in the Mansion House to find a job, the Print Fest will tell you about printing in olden times and the Sky Ride on Sunday is a great cycle. And with all this I haven’t even mentioned the Phizzfest an exemplary community arts festival with pages and pages of events! And this long list ONLY covers two days!!!

I will try to see the Dragon Boat Race, might have a look at the Kite Fest and will check out the Phizzfest. But I have to do all these things on Sunday because on Saturday I unfortunately will have to work. :-/ I would like to do the Sky Ride, but don’t think that will work out.

You will definitely find me in Gardiner Street Church on Sunday evening, because the summer break is over and the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir is back. At 19:30. It is not a typical mass, IT IS DIFFERENT! Give it a go!

On Tuesday the Milk & Cookies Stories evening is taking place again. Check it out. On Wednesday the Mexican Spirit tasting sounds interesting. ;-) And on Thursday I would like to go to the Space Shuttle lecture if I didn’t have to write the next issue of the Event Guide.

______Competition______________

ALL-IRELAND CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL
Some of you might remember the Bord Bia Septemberfest last year, it took place in Farmleigh House and was focusing on small breweries and cider makers (what do you call them?). Unfortunately the Septemberfest won’t be back, but the good news is that something much better is taking place instead.
From 23-25 September the 1st All-Ireland Craft Beerfest, a three-day celebration of Irish Craft Brews, will take place in the RDS, in Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
The organisers Seamus O’Hara and Bruce Mansour are intending to create a world-class gathering of breweries each year, where you can sample, experience, learn and be entertained. The festival will feature over 40 beers and ciders along with select whiskey makers and there will be talented bands from all over the country entertaining you. The festival dates and times are: Fri 23 Sept from 16:00-00:30, Sat 24 Sept from 12:00-00:30 and Sun 25 Sept from 12:00-18:00. Tickets are now available and are EUR 10 per day or EUR 15 for a three day pass. All tickets include a free souvenir glass and a half-pint of beer or cider. Similar to some of the food tasting festivals, there will be an on-site currency, in this case called “Beer Bucks”, to pay for food and drink. Each Beer Buck is EUR 2.50 and will buy you 1/2 pint. Check out
www.irishcraftbeerfestival.com and buy your tickets on ticketmaster.ie or even better in one of the three pubs that sell tickets or in the Dublin Tourist Office, Suffolk Street, Dublin 2. All details are on the website.
Great news for all Dublin Event Guide readers: Bruce and Seamus have made FIVE (!!!) pairs of weekend passes available AND they are even adding EUR 20 worth of beer bucks for each pair of tickets. So, get your mails to me to enter this competititon! You have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with CRAFT BEER in the subject line and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 15:00 on Mon 19 Sept.

CASTANET MASTERCLASS
If you want to know anything about Flamenco and related culture, you know already that the people in the know are Flamenco El Indalo, a group that aims to spread the word about Flamenco. Recently they successfully ran a big Flamenco Festival in Dublin and regularly they offer taster classes for dancing or clapping etc. This month new Flamenco Masterclasses will start and if you are interested check out www.flamencoindalo.com for all the details.
Flamenco is great and I love watching it, but dancing is not really my thing. Do you know that feeling? If you feel the same, but still want to feel the rhythm and get involved, then you can do clapping classes (lots of fun!) and now brand new, you can even learn Castanets.
Nath and Damien, who run Flamenco El Indalo are great supporters of the Dublin Event Guide and regularly have interesting prices for competitions as well. This time, you ,might have hoped exactly for that ;-), you can win a space on the Castanets masterclass on 17 Sept for yourself and a friend. And to win this pair of tickets for the Castanets class, you only have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with CASTANETS in the subject and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. (Please only enter if you intend to do the class if you win!)
Now, if you have castanets at home and the are gathering dust, you might not want to wait or the outcome of the competition, but just want to sign up right away. So that you can learn how to use them and impress everyone at your next Spanish themed party. :-) The event is on Sat 17 Sept at the Liffey Trust Studios not far from the Point Theatre / O2. It will ve a fun class with a professional Spanish teacher!

DUBLIN FRINGE FESTIVAL
The 16 day-long festival of theatre, comedy, music, dance and spectacle and especially of ODD performances (I mean that in a good way!) is starting this weekend. In the Saturday section there is some more information taking place all over Dublin city centre. If you have never heard about the Fringe Festival, have a look at the programme and read some of the descriptions. “Unusual” is a word that often will come to mind. ;-) The programme is here www.fringefest.com/absolut_fringe2011_programme.pdf the website is www.fringefest.com and a few free events can be found here www.fringefest.com/i-like?tags=free

DUBLIN LIVING AWARDS
The submission deadline for the Dublin Living Awards has been extended to the 16 September and even better, the EUR 30 nomination fee has been waived, so that even more businesses can submit their nomination. And here is what I wrote last week:
Alchemy Event Management together with sponsors Vodafone, Metro Herald and 98FM are running a new award for businesses and organisations in Dublin. The “Dublin Living Awards” will showcase the businesses and organisations that make Dublin a great place to live, work and visit. The deadline for nominations is the 09 September (now 16 September!) and if you have a business (e.g. bars, restaurants, boutiques, gyms, spas, hotels, restaurants etc) have a look at the website at www.dublinlivingawards.ie to see if you would like to put your business forward. There are some non-business categories (e.g. “Outstanding Contribution to Dublin Life” or “People’s Choice Award), where you might want to nominate organisations or individuals that contribute greatly to the life in Dublin.
One the recruitment/nomination phase is over, a number of judges will shortlist the entries and then you will have an opportunity to vote for your favourite finalists to decide the winner. So check out www.dublinlivingawards.ie

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 9000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Thurs 08 Sept – 21 Oct: National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
The “Sculpture in Context” exhibition celebrates 10 years at the National Botanic Gardens, showcasing the work of new and established artists, taking interesting directions with exciting new work. The Botanical Gardens give the artists a rare opportunity to realise large scale work. It also gives the public the opportunity to ramble and find some sculptures in the most unusual places. Over 120 sculptures will be displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House, and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the gallery above the Visitors’ Centre. www.botanicgardens.ie/news/events.htm

MAKING SPACE – GALLERY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Making Space is a timely exploration of the expansion and development of Islam in contemporary Ireland. Taken over the course of three years, the exhibition records the adaptive reuse of spaces for the purpose of prayer by diverse Muslim communities across Ireland. Bowler reveals the quiet transformation of everyday spaces in urban, residential and rural locations. He records how private homes, warehouses, office spaces, and industrial units are being turned into spaces for prayer, providing a unique record of a major, though not widely acknowledged, change in Ireland’s built environment. www.galleryofphotography.ie/exhibitions/making_space_noel_bowler.html

And when you come to the exhibition, you will have the opportunity to create your own Absolut Vis10n as an art station will be set-up with art supplies and blank bottles. Follow in the footsteps of some of the 20th Century’s most influential artists Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst and Louise Bourgeois, when you get the opportunity to design your own bottle. The “Phizzfest”, the Phibsborough Community Arts Festival, is entering its main weekend and there are sooo many events! The number is so big that I can’t list all events and have to ask you to check out the packed programme full of free events here phizzfest.ie/documents/pdfformat/Phizzfest2011.pdf
23 events on Saturday alone and another 13 on Sunday including a Community and Family Day. www.phizzfest.ie/phizzpress/

FRINGE FESTIVAL
10-25 Sept: All over Dublin.
The Fringe Festival is starting today and will run until Sun 25 September. It is the nature of a festival like this that most events will not be free, but the Fringe Festival always has at least a few free events and you can find them here: www.fringefest.com/i-like?tags=free
Similar to last year a big performance of the “Macnas” performance group is the opening event entitled “On the Edge of Things is a Fierce Beauty”. A multi-stage play will be performed in Collins Barracks and tickets were free for this. However, unlike last year, I totally forgot about it and therefore didn’t tell you (and didn’t get tickets for myself either). Last years’ performance was really really good and if you got free tickets for Saturday, then consider yourself lucky and enjoy the event. ;-) If you do not have tickets, then you are unfortunately out of luck through the normal ticket office route. All tickets are gone and there won’t be any at the venue. However, there might be still a way of getting people to the event. If any of you have more tickets than you need and if others are looking for tickets, you could maybe use the Discussion group www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide?sk=app_2373072738 on the Dublin Event Guide facebook page to make contact with the “other side”.
If you can’t get any tickets, then make sure you check if any of the other free events are still available: www.fringefest.com/i-like?tags=free
The complete programme is here www.fringefest.com/absolut_fringe2011_programme.pdf

“Frida Kahlo…Love, Pain, Passion and Songs” is a biographical Mexican musical show. This artistic work has as main subject the life of the great painter Frida Kahlo. The monologue narrates her life from an enjoyable and human perspective and it combines this with an excellent repertory of songs immortalized throughout history by people in Mexico and that were listened to and interpreted and enjoyed several times by the artist. This show combines her life with the Mexican music that she surely enjoyed so much. Performer: Ana Alicia Salas dublin.cervantes.es/FichasCultura/Ficha75711_16_2.htm

______This is odd!!______________

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES – ARE ALL THE SAME!!
I guess with some surprise the two presidential candidates Gay Mitchel (Fine Gael) and Mary Davis (Independent) found out that there is not much difference between them: BOTH have chosen the slogan “Pride At Home. Respect Abroad.”. What a coincidence! I am sure you find this as odd as I do and the question has to be asked if one copied from the other OR if they both employ the same PR agency. It is odd to have a similar slogan, but to have EXACTLY the same, down to the punctuation!? VERY odd! www.broadsheet.ie/2011/09/08/fight/

I expected some smaller number of events today because we are soon entering autumn and in that segment of the year, there are usually some less events, but the opposite is true. The list of free events is super long again! I hope you find something that interests you. And if you go there with your friends, tell them about the Dublin Event Guide!

Take care,

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
