Hi all!

The summer is still hiding and the promised scorching temperature that filled the newspapers in May (Metro Herald on 26 May 2011: “Ireland set for sizzling summer”) definitely didn’t materialise. But let’s face it, when we decided to come/stay in Ireland, the reason was never really the weather. :-) …It would just be a welcome bonus.

We can’t do anything about the weather, but other aspects of our lives in Dublin we can influence. One way is by making the most of Dublin’s Cultural offerings and this is where this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) comes in. I will tell you all about the free events in Dublin.
Another way is by telling the people in charge what we like and what we want to be improved and this is where Dublin City’s initiative “Your Dublin, Your Voice” comes in. With regular questionnaires/surveys Dublin City wants your opinion about our city and to thank you, you even can win brilliant prices. Another busy festival weekend. You have probably realised that last week this section was more a listing and not me picking certain events. There are just tooo many good events to pre-select them for you.

This week the Kings of Concrete festival for cool kids is on and I will have a look at it at some point on Sat or Sun. The Malahide Festival runs on both days but I might give that a miss and instead go to the Zoombie Walk in Dublin. The Cuban Film Festival on Sat sounds interesting, but I am hoping for sun and will then not be found inside.

On Sunday the Bray Air Spectacular is competing with the Temple Bar Festival afternoon of gigs. But then there are great bands in Bray as well on Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. Difficult decision! If you want to go to Bray, be prepared for LOTS and LOTS of people.

The Balbriggan Formula Fun on Sunday sounds like a lot of Fun as well, but Balbriggan could turn out to be a little to far away for me.

Currently we are in the pre-Edinburgh Fringe Festival phase and all comedians are fine-tuning and rehearsing their material. Lucky for us! In Kilmainham there will be four days of comedy in the patriot Inn from Monday and the Comedy Crunch in Shebeen Chich has an extra evening on Tuesday as well to give Comedians the practice runs they think they need.

The rest of the week I will be busy with other things, so have a look if something tempts you on Tues-Thurs.

COMEDY CHARITY NIGHT – SUGAR CLUB
On 26 July Reachout.com is hosting a comedy night at The Sugar Club. MCd by funny man Fred Cooke, the night will feature some of the country’s top comic talent, including Jack Wise, Eric Lalor and Shazwanda. ReachOut.com is a service dedicated to taking the mystery out of mental health, to remove the taboos and take mental health issues out into the open. All proceeds from the sales of tickets from this event will go to helping ReachOut.com deliver the best service it can to young people with something on their minds.
Fresh from his performance at this year’s Street Performance World Championship, Jack Wise will mesmerise the audience with his cocktail of comedy and magic all served up with a solid slice of sarcasm. Eric Lalor will leave the audience with a warm fuzzy feeling and lots of laughter and the razor sharp North Dublin wit of Shazwanda will provide the balance to the warm fuzzy feeling but will not be less laughter-inducing. PADDY CASEY + PHELIM DREW – CHARITY CONCERT
The LetsDoItForBen.com charity is raising funds for 7 year old Ben Murphy. Ben was born normally, but after a vaccination a sequence of events was kicked off that lead to serious epileptic seizures and the discovery that Ben had a metabolic disorder called SCAD, which prevents the body converting certain fats into energy. This condition is a life long and life threatening disorder and there are only 4 children in Ireland that have the same condition. There is a chance that doctors in the USA would be able to help Ben, but the family doesn’t have the money to get Ben checked and possibly treated, so they are running events to raise the money. On Fri 22 July Paddy Casey, Phelim Drew and Mick Fitzgerald will be in Ballyfermot Utd. Sports and Social Club, Blackditch Road, Dublin 10 for a charity concert to help the fundraising efforts for LetsDoItForBen.com Doors open at 20:00 and tickets are EUR 15. EYP TEA PARTY & FASHION SHOW – WESTBURY HOTEL
The European Young Professionals (EYP) invite to a Tea Party & Fashion Show on Fri 22 July in the Westbury Hotel (19:30-23:30). The Dublin Fire Brigade will be at the event and you will be allowed to take pictures of them in exchange for donations for Barnardos. Then you can admire some of Dublin’s finest fashions as local talented designers take to the stage and showcase their creations. Surprise performances and other entertainment by artists including DJ Byron will entertain you throughout the evening. This year’s show is headlined by Irish designers Michael Leong, Richard Lewis and Yasmin Velloza and also includes fashion by Eilis Boyle, Mo Muse, Claire O’Connor and Wendy’s Wardrobe amongst others. The evening will also include a display of fashion by some of Dublin’s young fashion professionals including Umit Kutluk and Lucy Gilmor Murphy Hats. The afterparty will take place in Lilies Bor dello nightclub in Grafton Street. Proceeds of the event will be donated to Barnardos Children’s Charity of Ireland. RANELAGH ARTS FESTIVAL CANCELLED
The Ranelagh Arts Festival has been a wonderful multifaceted end-of-summer festival in the last week of September and I remember a number of great events and concerts. Unfortunately all this will not take place this year as the Ranelagh Arts Festival 2011 has been cancelled. Hopefully it will be back next year! It hasn’t even been properly announced that it is cancelled, but I have it on good authority. www.ranelagharts.org

Free ROMEO & JULIET PERFORMANCE – RANELAGH
The cancellation of the Ranelagh Arts Festival got Cracked Light Productions to produce a free (unplugged) performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet in Ranelagh Gardens, but this is not a one-night only performance. No, they will perform the play from 09-14 August in Ranelagh Gardens and then from 17-21 August in Iveagh Gardens. What a brilliant idea!
You might wonder why I am already telling you about it. Well, first of all I want you all to show your appreciation for this great initiative by going to one of the free performances. Cracked Light Productions expect a total of 2,500 people to come. But I think that this number can be at least doubled! Let’s help them. ;-) The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will most likely be one of the Media Partners of the event, so help me to spread the word!
There is another area where they urgently need your help:
To fund the whole performance, the team needs some money, so they are using the “crowd-funding” platform fundit.ie to raise money. Fundit.ie works like that: You have a certain amount of time to raise the money that you need, but if you don’t reach 100% of the specified amount you get NOTHING. 24/7 – SAMARITANS PHOTO EXHIBITION
Samaritans Ireland is hosting a photo exhibition, entitled “24/7”, which showcases how Samaritans’ services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year. The photos will highlight the day-to-day work done by their volunteers in the Dublin and Sligo Samaritan branches. The exhibition will be on display in the European Union House, 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2 and in the neighbouring Fixx Coffee House, 13-17 Dawson Street from Thurs 21 July until Fri 29 July and on Thursday, 21st July, at 7pm. Samaritans is a volunteer-led organisation, which has been supporting those in distress and suicidal crisis in Ireland since 1961. Over 2,000 people volunteer with the Samaritans in Ireland and some of these volunteers are featured in the exhibition. All images were taken by Irish photographer Derek Speirs. The opening hours for European Union House are Monday to Friday, 09:00-17:00. The opening hours for Fixx Coffee House are Monday to Saturday, 07:00-20:00 and Sunday 20:00-19:00. As part of PLAY, The Ark’s summer music festival for families, there is a free foyer sound installations at The Ark. The projects held over the past year in which young people worked with designers and public authorities so that all could learn from each other about how public services, facilities and spaces can be improved through design. KINGS OF CONCRETE – WOOD QUAY
Sat+Sun 23+24 July: Amphitheatre, Wood Quay, between Christ Church and Dublin Civic Offices. Kings of Concrete is a cool event for the kids! Skateboarding, rollerblading, bmx, parkour, break dance, live street art, graffiti and sweet sounds. There will be competitions, show performances and on Sunday evening at 20:00 there will be even a film screening about Kings of Concrete 2011.
Some of this year’s highlights will include: The RampRage Titan ramp which will be eating into the main amphitheatre standing at a whopping 8ft tall, an awesome selection of skate, inline and BMX comps along with b-boy battles, vespa customisation, freestyle footie, beatboxing demos and more. And the best part is, all of this great urban entertainment is free of charge.
School might be out for summer but the Kids of Concrete programme at this year’s Kings of Concrete festival will open a classroom with a difference to help kids get creative and learn skills such as skating, BMX’ing, rollerblading, Parkour, hip hop dance, graffiti / illustration classes and T-shirt design workshop.
While the l’il scamps are busy learning their new skills there’s plenty to keep the parents entertained. Get involved in the competitions, enjoy some delicious organic food, kick back, relax and enjoy the spectacular visual feast unfolding before your eyes. – Closing the festival on Sunday night at 20:00 is the Capture Kings film screening and winner announcement. Starting on the morning of Friday 22nd, four selected teams will compete to film, edit and deliver a 4-5 minute piece on the festival by Sunday night. Each piece will be shown on a rear projection cinema on site at 20:00 sharp, where attendees can also enjoy some free BBQ, and the winning team of the Capture Kings competition will be announced.

Over the last two months the IFI ran free screenings of films from the IFI Irish Film Archive on Mondays and Wednesdays. The films are really interesting and became so popular that in July the Archive films will be screened every day, but – to make my life interesting when I try to describe that to you :-) – the two films are shown on alternating days. Simply collect your free tickets at the IFI Box Office when you get there. (You might have to pay a 1 Euro membership for the day.)
The first film is “Shamrocks Sky High”, sponsored by Aer Lingus and produced by Vincent Corcoran. This film from 1968 shows the company’s operations in Ireland and overseas. The film looks behind the scenes at Dublin Airport and at the expertise involved in developing and maintaining Ireland’s national airline. ZOMBIE WALK – CITY CENTRE

Up to 4,500 zombies are expected to descend upon Dublin for the world’s largest Zombie Walk. The purpose of the event is to fundraise for the Irish Cancer Society and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Apichatpong ‘Joei’ Weerasethakul has become one of the most famous filmmakers in the world since winning the Palme d’Or in Cannes last year, but his work can’t be pigeonholed. He grew up in provincial Thailand, immersed in pop genre movies and comics, and then studied in Chicago, where he discovered surrealist art. Ever since he began making films and installations in the mid-1990s, he has relished opposites, contradictions and alternative possibilities. Play with Music II consists of two different multimedia installations, Handchime and Wee-Doodle and offers an exciting opportunity for children and adults to interact with sound and vision.
Handchime, created by Irish composers, Edward Costello and Andrew McGovern, is an interactive melody generator, that uses hand gestures to control pitch and sound textures. The installation makes use of both audio and visual feedback, which provides a simple and intuitive way of creating pleasant melodic textures.
Wee-Doodle, created by Irish composer, Eoin Smith, is an easy and fun way of manipulating visuals and sounds, using a Wii remote. It allows users to control audio, draw shapes and generally explore the sonic and visual world in the installation. The idea is simple – take the controller and enjoy a Wee-Doodle.”

At “Post Cards from Dublin” with Artist Elaine Leader, children (10-12 years) will be using a broad range of printmaking techniques, Postcards from Dublin will provide children with the opportunity to explore their sense of ‘place’, allowing them to express their responses to the city and their local environment in an experimental and creative way culminating in a range of postcards which will convey their feelings and attitudes towards their Capital City. BURMA SOLDIER – TALK+SCREENING – IMMA

In conjunction with the exhibition Apichatpong Weerasthakul (For Tomorrow For Tonight), film maker Julie le Brocquy presents an introduction on the making of this unique film using the beautiful photographs of Irish photographer Nic Dunlop woven into the smuggled footage of video Journalists from Burma to tell the story of a modern dictatorship and its brutal regime . This film has been adopted by the Burma Campaign internationally, Department of State US and Amnesty International and it has been smuggled extensively into Burma unsettling the military and reaching many millions of Burmese through reverse pirating. DATA 47.0 – ART&TECHNOLOGY TALK – SCIENCE GALLERY
Thurs 28 July: 18:30 – Science Gallery Cafe, Trinity College Dublin, Pearse Street, Dublin 2. In conjunction with Ahead of the Game workshop, DATA will hold a free event on Thursday, featuring talks and presentations from invited international artists Duncan Speakman, Peter Petralia from Proto-type and Dublin based practitioner Teresa Dillon. Duncan Speakman is a Bristol based artist who creates work that physically and emotionally engages audiences in public spaces. He employs walking as both a process and/or outcome in the work. In recent years he has created pre-recorded audio walks, generative GPS-based experiences, live performance using locative media content, and games for public spaces. Dr. Peter S Petralia is a producer, director, writer, curator and artistic director of Proto-type Theater. With Proto-type, he has written over a dozen full-length performance works that have premiered in New York City, North Carolina, the United Kingdom, Romania and Amsterdam. Dr. Teresa Dillon is an artist-researcher. Her main interests include the use and role of existing and emerging technologies within live performance and interaction, particularly in public and site specific settings.
The Dublin Art and Technology Association (DATA) was formed in March 2002 with the intention of promoting, exploring, discussing, and exhibiting art and technology in Ireland and the world. Based in Dublin, DATA is built on the idea that collaboration between artists, musicians, technologists, and academia is the key element in creating a rich cultural environment for the dialogue and conception of technological art practices. The RDS National Crafts and Student Art Awards Exhibition is a major event in the Irish craft and visual arts calendar and attracts the very best in amateur and professional crafts practice in Ireland every year. It provides a platform for designers and emerging students to gain much deserved attention whilst giving the public the opportunity to purchase unique and magnificent creations. The Exhibition will be open during the Dublin Horse Show from 03-07 August, but it will NOT be free then. If you want to see the exhibition for free, you have to do that on Thrus/Fri 28+29 July. NATURAL OIL SCANDAL – STOP PAT RABBITTE
Ireland has a lot of water around it and often with a lot of water comes the opportunity to search for natural resources relatively easily. And so there are gas fields and oil fields around Ireland, which are extremely attractive to companies like Shell etc. 190km off the Kerry coast a hydrocarbon prospect (Dunquin prospect) was discovered that could contain enough gas and oil to supply the Irish needs for more than 20 years. More detailed surveys and test drills still need to be done, but the chance is higher than 50% that it will yield 300 mio (!!) barrels of oil and a huge amount of gas. Wohooo, you would think! The Irish economy will get a nice boost! But that is NOT so, because for some strange and seemingly stupid reason, the Irish governments give all this away for free! Oil extruding companies fell over each other to get a piece of the pie and instead of holding on to part of it, ALL was given away. Exxon Mobile and the Italian Oil giant ENI own it now and they will only have to pay taxes (25% on declared profits) after ALL costs are written off. So, the revenue that the Irish state will get is a fraction of what it SHOULD be.
Granting these scandalous licenses that give everything away, was started by the previous government and it was an outrageous thing to do. Now we have a new government and Enda Kenny promised to repair the mistakes and faults from before. In addition he appointed Pat Rabitte, the Labour TD, the position of Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources. So many expected that Pat Rabitte, based on his political ideology, would put an immediate stop to giving all these resources away for free, but shockingly this is not the case:

At the very least he could change the tax regime, so that 25% has to be paid on all oil and gas that is taken ashore. No such thing! :-(
