———————————————————————
Hi all!
The summer is still hiding and the promised scorching temperature that filled the newspapers in May (Metro Herald on 26 May 2011: “Ireland set for sizzling summer”) definitely didn’t materialise. But let’s face it, when we decided to come/stay in Ireland, the reason was never really the weather. :-) …It would just be a welcome bonus.
[ad]
We can’t do anything about the weather, but other aspects of our lives in Dublin we can influence. One way is by making the most of Dublin’s Cultural offerings and this is where this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) comes in. I will tell you all about the free events in Dublin.
Another way is by telling the people in charge what we like and what we want to be improved and this is where Dublin City’s initiative “Your Dublin, Your Voice” comes in. With regular questionnaires/surveys Dublin City wants your opinion about our city and to thank you, you even can win brilliant prices. If you have joined the panel before, make sure you read the piece about it in the Dublin News section in this newsletter. If you have never heard about this initiative you can immediately help here surveys.delve-surveys.com/dccpanel2/?friendref=dublineventguide and you should read the Dublin News section as well. ;-)
And while you are in “survey mode”, please check the second piece in the Dublin News section as well. This Dublin Event Guide would appreciate your support and you can find all the details in the article “Register for surveys – Help the Event Guide”.
And finally in this introduction: Thanks a lot to the people who sent me their testimonials/opinions about the Dublin Event Guide. I will contact you all directly, but didn’t get a chance yet. If you didn’t send a mail yet to tell me how you would recommend the Dublin Event Guide to others, please still do it. Tell me why or how the Dublin Event Guide helps you, makes a difference, is something lots more people should read.
Here are three examples of what you could say:
“I find the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events so great as it allows me to find and do things I don’t normally get the chance to do. I thought that I would be quite good at finding things to do here, yet I didn’t know half the stuff that went on. That was until I signed up to the Dublin Event Guide last year.” Lisa Rogers
“The Dublin Event Guide for Free Events is an absolute must have for every Dubliner and everyone who visits or wants to visit Dublin. It has made my life and knowledge of Dublin much richer. Thank you for this wonderful work.” Tom Murphy
“I love the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, to me and my friends it’s our bible for knowing what’s on in Dublin, we would be lost without it.” Emma Skelton
Please send your testimonial to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject MY HELP ;-).
The website for the Dublin Event Guide is at www.dublineventguide.com and please let all your friends, family, colleagues and even strangers ;-) know about the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” and ask them to sign up! ;-) Imagine, if we were 50,000 people in the Dublin Event Guide Community. Do you think Event organisers would think of us when organising events?
And remember that that Facebook Page is at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide where you (and your friends) can express their LIKE for this newsletter (and where they can sign up too). People can sign up as well by sending an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject SUBSCRIBE DEG if they prefer that.
This might help as well to get the word out: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

Be part of this growing online facebook community and tell your friends. You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page! And I know (and you know it too!) that you don’t want to miss out! :-)

At this point in the Dublin Event Guide I usually have a “Feel Good Slot”. This is the space to come to if your day or week has not been the best OR if you want to be inspired even further. I had a clip of Tony Robbins not too long ago and I will see him in September for a seminar. An amazing guy and if you are interested in his training course, drop me a mail. Tony Robbins is one of the best known inspirational and motivational speakers and many people wonder if even someone like him can have bad days. The answer is a definite YES! But it depends what you do with that emotion! Listen to the brief interview and take his recommendation into your weekend and new week! www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/38434790

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week only Lorraine F. helped with a MUCH appreciated donation! Thanks a lot! To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more. – MY part is to give 25 hours per week for no pay to make sure that YOU get the Dublin Event Guide every week. Could you help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year? That’s a bargain!! :-) It is to cover the cost, but even if it was pay for me, imagine, it would be less than 1 cent per hour (52 weeks x 25 hours = 1300 hours). Maybe I should ask for a LOT more??? ;-)
BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads, then please note that only if you click on the link in this newletter/e-zine when you, for example, order books from bookdepository, a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here to start your purchase, I don’t get anything either. And it is similar for most of the other ads.
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just EUR 0.25 per newsletter, you definitely have that much!). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent? www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED WITH LIFE?
Are you bothered, bewildered or just bogged down with life at the moment? – Mary Keating, MA, trained psychoanalytic psychotherapist, is available for appointments in Custom House Medical Centre, IFSC or at 20 Lower Baggot Street. Please phone 01-6776253 or 0868783086 or email mkeating@iol.ie for enquiries or to make an appointment. Her fees are appropriate to circumstances, so talk to her if you could do with some help and support. www.agalma.ie/therapists/mary-keating

Another busy festival weekend. You have probably realised that last week this section was more a listing and not me picking certain events. There are just tooo many good events to pre-select them for you.
This week the Kings of Concrete festival for cool kids is on and I will have a look at it at some point on Sat or Sun. The Malahide Festival runs on both days but I might give that a miss and instead go to the Zoombie Walk in Dublin. The Cuban Film Festival on Sat sounds interesting, but I am hoping for sun and will then not be found inside.
On Sunday the Bray Air Spectacular is competing with the Temple Bar Festival afternoon of gigs. But then there are great bands in Bray as well on Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. Difficult decision! If you want to go to Bray, be prepared for LOTS and LOTS of people.
The Balbriggan Formula Fun on Sunday sounds like a lot of Fun as well, but Balbriggan could turn out to be a little to far away for me.
Currently we are in the pre-Edinburgh Fringe Festival phase and all comedians are fine-tuning and rehearsing their material. Lucky for us! In Kilmainham there will be four days of comedy in the patriot Inn from Monday and the Comedy Crunch in Shebeen Chich has an extra evening on Tuesday as well to give Comedians the practice runs they think they need.
The rest of the week I will be busy with other things, so have a look if something tempts you on Tues-Thurs.

______Competition______________
COMEDY CHARITY NIGHT – SUGAR CLUB
On 26 July Reachout.com is hosting a comedy night at The Sugar Club. MCd by funny man Fred Cooke, the night will feature some of the country’s top comic talent, including Jack Wise, Eric Lalor and Shazwanda. ReachOut.com is a service dedicated to taking the mystery out of mental health, to remove the taboos and take mental health issues out into the open. All proceeds from the sales of tickets from this event will go to helping ReachOut.com deliver the best service it can to young people with something on their minds.
Fresh from his performance at this year’s Street Performance World Championship, Jack Wise will mesmerise the audience with his cocktail of comedy and magic all served up with a solid slice of sarcasm. Eric Lalor will leave the audience with a warm fuzzy feeling and lots of laughter and the razor sharp North Dublin wit of Shazwanda will provide the balance to the warm fuzzy feeling but will not be less laughter-inducing. Tickets cost EUR 20 and are available here entertainment.ie/event/Comedy/The-Sugar-Club//2594470.htm. The event starts at 20:00 and is for over 18s only. Visit www.reachout.com to see more about its service. The organiser made one pair of tickets available for a competition and the winner is Simon Eales. Congrats!
PADDY CASEY + PHELIM DREW – CHARITY CONCERT
The LetsDoItForBen.com charity is raising funds for 7 year old Ben Murphy. Ben was born normally, but after a vaccination a sequence of events was kicked off that lead to serious epileptic seizures and the discovery that Ben had a metabolic disorder called SCAD, which prevents the body converting certain fats into energy. This condition is a life long and life threatening disorder and there are only 4 children in Ireland that have the same condition. There is a chance that doctors in the USA would be able to help Ben, but the family doesn’t have the money to get Ben checked and possibly treated, so they are running events to raise the money. On Fri 22 July Paddy Casey, Phelim Drew and Mick Fitzgerald will be in Ballyfermot Utd. Sports and Social Club, Blackditch Road, Dublin 10 for a charity concert to help the fundraising efforts for LetsDoItForBen.com Doors open at 20:00 and tickets are EUR 15. Reserve them on 087 6327208. All proceeds go to LetsDoItForBen.com and you can find out more on the website or on www.facebook.com/letsdoitforben. The charity has made 2 pairs of tickets available for a competition and the winners are Ciara O’Reilly and Dan Forde. Congrats!
EYP TEA PARTY & FASHION SHOW – WESTBURY HOTEL
The European Young Professionals (EYP) invite to a Tea Party & Fashion Show on Fri 22 July in the Westbury Hotel (19:30-23:30). The Dublin Fire Brigade will be at the event and you will be allowed to take pictures of them in exchange for donations for Barnardos. Then you can admire some of Dublin’s finest fashions as local talented designers take to the stage and showcase their creations. Surprise performances and other entertainment by artists including DJ Byron will entertain you throughout the evening. This year’s show is headlined by Irish designers Michael Leong, Richard Lewis and Yasmin Velloza and also includes fashion by Eilis Boyle, Mo Muse, Claire O’Connor and Wendy’s Wardrobe amongst others. The evening will also include a display of fashion by some of Dublin’s young fashion professionals including Umit Kutluk and Lucy Gilmor Murphy Hats. The afterparty will take place in Lilies Bor dello nightclub in Grafton Street. Proceeds of the event will be donated to Barnardos Children’s Charity of Ireland. ______Dublin News______________
YOUR DUBLIN, YOUR VOICE – DUBLIN NEEDS YOU!
Your opinion is needed to help changing Dublin…and when you submit the survey, you can win great prizes. You and a friend could win a scenic helicopter trip over Dublin (a brilliant prize!!). In addition there will be 10 pairs of tickets for Dublin Bus scenic tours of the city (which are valid for the ghost bus tours, coastal tours and sightseeing tours) and 15 pairs of tickets for an exclusive walking tour of Dublin with Pat Liddy Walking Tours where you will explore the hidden medieval and Georgian Dublin. And only 5-7 minutes of your time is needed to get a chance to a) help with your opinion and b) win a prize.
The questions are about the social scene in Dublin, your shopping and spending habits and about how you like to spend your time in Dublin. So, interesting questions and an opportunity for you to make your voice heard.
Here is what you have to do:
If you took part in the first survey before Christmas, but haven’t responded to the second survey yet, check your mails from around 01 June 2011. A mail with the subject “Your Dublin, Your Voice “should have made it to you from surveys@delve-research.com. Read it!
If you never took part or if your e-mail address has changed or if the mail in June never made it to you, then NOW is the time for you to join the group of over 2,500 people who are already registered. Click on surveys.delve-surveys.com/dccpanel2/?friendref=dublineventguide to join the panel and then follow the instructions. If you click on this link you not only can win one of the prizes I listed above, but in addition to that, Dublin City is providing FOUR (!!) EUR 25 shopping vouchers exclusively for the Dublin Event Guide readers who join the panel through this link above. A separate draw will determine the four winners.
My recommendation is that as many of you as possible take part because if we don’t voice our opinions, then we let other people GUESS what you and I want and need in Dublin! The survey closes on 31 July, so don’t delay and respond now.

MORE SURVEYS – THE DUBLIN EVENT GUIDE NEEDS YOU ;-)
MySurvey is a company that runs surveys for other companies, for example to find out what people think about the name of a product that will be launched soon, or about an advertisement campaign before it makes it on to the billboards or on the TV screen. So, you influence the approach companies take and to thank you, you will receive reward points which can be exchanged for interesting vouchers or you can donate your rewards to charity if you prefer that.
MySurvey regularly look for new and good panel members. A “good” panel member is someone who doesn’t just sign up, but who replies to questionnaires as well. And for helping them to reach new panel members they are prepared to give prices. I am always looking for ways for you to help the Dublin Event Guide without having to put your hand in your own pocket and here is a way: If more than 200 people sign up by following this link: clk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=83237&a=1719778&g=17705998 and if these 200+ people fill in at least one questionnaire in the next 30 days, then the promoter (i.e. me!) will get an iPad. Not a lot of work for you and it would help me prepare the weekly newsletter in a more convenient and efficient way. Can you help? Unless you ARE already a MySurvey Panel member, click on this link to help! clk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=83237&a=1719778&g=17705998 Thanks! :-)

MySURVEY – Get rewarded for taking part in surveys that help companies to improve their products or the information they provide. You will get paid for your help and can get PayPal vouchers or donate the reward to a charity AND you make your opinion count! In addition MySURVEY will support the Dublin Event Guide financially if you register through this link:

RANELAGH ARTS FESTIVAL CANCELLED
The Ranelagh Arts Festival has been a wonderful multifaceted end-of-summer festival in the last week of September and I remember a number of great events and concerts. Unfortunately all this will not take place this year as the Ranelagh Arts Festival 2011 has been cancelled. Hopefully it will be back next year! It hasn’t even been properly announced that it is cancelled, but I have it on good authority. www.ranelagharts.org
Free ROMEO & JULIET PERFORMANCE – RANELAGH
The cancellation of the Ranelagh Arts Festival got Cracked Light Productions to produce a free (unplugged) performance of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet in Ranelagh Gardens, but this is not a one-night only performance. No, they will perform the play from 09-14 August in Ranelagh Gardens and then from 17-21 August in Iveagh Gardens. What a brilliant idea!
You might wonder why I am already telling you about it. Well, first of all I want you all to show your appreciation for this great initiative by going to one of the free performances. Cracked Light Productions expect a total of 2,500 people to come. But I think that this number can be at least doubled! Let’s help them. ;-) The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will most likely be one of the Media Partners of the event, so help me to spread the word!
There is another area where they urgently need your help:
To fund the whole performance, the team needs some money, so they are using the “crowd-funding” platform fundit.ie to raise money. Fundit.ie works like that: You have a certain amount of time to raise the money that you need, but if you don’t reach 100% of the specified amount you get NOTHING. The Cracked Light team has received funding for EUR 2300 and needs another EUR 700 to reach their target. If you can help, check www.fundit.ie/project/romeo–juliet-unplugged
I will keep you posted about the progress and will remind you in August when the performances start.
Free TWEETING TAXI
BeepBeep.ie are running a free taxi in town for the last time this Friday from 16:00-21:00. I wouldn’t be surprised if all timeslots are booked out, but you can try it anyway. To book the taxi go to www.facebook.com/beepbeep.ie?sk=app_220597357964537 or send a Direct Message on Twitter to @beepbeep_ie
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 8000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
More to come here!

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.
24/7 – SAMARITANS PHOTO EXHIBITION
Samaritans Ireland is hosting a photo exhibition, entitled “24/7”, which showcases how Samaritans’ services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year. The exhibition will be on display in the European Union House, 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2 and in the neighbouring Fixx Coffee House, 13-17 Dawson Street from Thurs 21 July until Fri 29 July and on Thursday, 21st July, at 7pm. Samaritans is a volunteer-led organisation, which has been supporting those in distress and suicidal crisis in Ireland since 1961. Over 2,000 people volunteer with the Samaritans in Ireland and some of these volunteers are featured in the exhibition. All images were taken by Irish photographer Derek Speirs. The opening hours for European Union House are Monday to Friday, 09:00-17:00. The opening hours for Fixx Coffee House are Monday to Saturday, 07:00-20:00 and Sunday 20:00-19:00. NATIONAL MUSEUM EVENT
The “Curator’s Tour: The Replica High Crosses” will take place on Fri 22 July from 12:30-13:00 in Collins Barracks (Decorative Arts & History). The tour is for adults.
“Get the inside story with curator, Padraig Clancy and hear at first-hand about their significance as replicas and as important objects in their own right. Places allocated on a first-come basis from 15 minutes before event starts.” This exhibition is truly amazing. It is just one single room with crosses, but the impact they have when you enter the room and are not prepared for what you see is BIG. Even if you can’t go to that tour, put the exhibition on your To Do list for one of the next few weekends!

ARCHIVE AT LUNCHTIME – FILM SCREENING – IFI
Daily in July: 13:10: Irish Film Institute, 6 Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Over the last two months the IFI ran free screenings of films from the IFI Irish Film Archive on Mondays and Wednesdays. The films are really interesting and became so popular that in July the Archive films will be screened every day, but – to make my life interesting when I try to describe that to you :-) – the two films are shown on alternating days. Simply collect your free tickets at the IFI Box Office when you get there. (You might have to pay a 1 Euro membership for the day.)
The first film is “Shamrocks Sky High”, sponsored by Aer Lingus and produced by Vincent Corcoran. This film from 1968 shows the company’s operations in Ireland and overseas. The film looks behind the scenes at Dublin Airport and at the expertise involved in developing and maintaining Ireland’s national airline. This film is 30 minutes long and is shown on all days with EVEN dates (2,4,6,8,10,….). www.ifi.ie/cinema/dispfilm_07.asp?filmID=7437&Date=04/07/2011&PageID=15
The second film is in fact a sequence of two shorter films: “Gael Linn: Amharc Eireann Newsreel Compilation” from 1956-1964 (7min) lets you marvel at inaugural flights to Malaga and New York; new jet airliners; training of air hostesses; and the arrival of stars. And “Radharc: Blessing the Aer Lingus Fleet” from 1962(12 min) shows that Aer Lingus planes are named after great Irish missionaries; are blessed annually by members of the clergy and carry us safely to destinations all over the world. These two shorter films are shown on all days with ODD dates (1,3,5,7,…). www.ifi.ie/cinema/dispfilm_07.asp?filmID=7436&Date=05/07/2011&PageID=15

Apichatpong ‘Joei’ Weerasethakul has become one of the most famous filmmakers in the world since winning the Palme d’Or in Cannes last year, but his work can’t be pigeonholed. Ever since he began making films and installations in the mid-1990s, he has relished opposites, contradictions and alternative possibilities. NATURAL OIL SCANDAL – STOP PAT RABBITTE
Ireland has a lot of water around it and often with a lot of water comes the opportunity to search for natural resources relatively easily. And so there are gas fields and oil fields around Ireland, which are extremely attractive to companies like Shell etc. 190km off the Kerry coast a hydrocarbon prospect (Dunquin prospect) was discovered that could contain enough gas and oil to supply the Irish needs for more than 20 years. More detailed surveys and test drills still need to be done, but the chance is higher than 50% that it will yield 300 mio (!!) barrels of oil and a huge amount of gas. Wohooo, you would think! The Irish economy will get a nice boost! But that is NOT so, because for some strange and seemingly stupid reason, the Irish governments give all this away for free! Oil extruding companies fell over each other to get a piece of the pie and instead of holding on to part of it, ALL was given away. Exxon Mobile and the Italian Oil giant ENI own it now and they will only have to pay taxes (25% on declared profits) after ALL costs are written off. So, the revenue that the Irish state will get is a fraction of what it SHOULD be.
Granting these scandalous licenses that give everything away, was started by the previous government and it was an outrageous thing to do. Now we have a new government and Enda Kenny promised to repair the mistakes and faults from before. In addition he appointed Pat Rabitte, the Labour TD, the position of Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources. So many expected that Pat Rabitte, based on his political ideology, would put an immediate stop to giving all these resources away for free, but shockingly this is not the case:

At the very least he could change the tax regime, so that 25% has to be paid on all oil and gas that is taken ashore. No such thing! :-(

If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
