Hi all!
If you haven’t seen yet the Capital D programme (RTE 1) that featured the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”, you have to hurry. The RTE Player will show it until Thursday (21 July). After that it will be gone. The link is here www.rte.ie/player/#!v=1102941

Again a steady stream of new subscribers have found this newsletter/e-zine and our Dublin Event Guide Community during last week. A big welcome to each and everybody of you. Enjoy the Event Guide, but more importantly, enjoy the events I am writing about. Reading about events can be good fun, but nothing beats going to them and experiencing them. ;-)
This week I need your help! I am looking for some testimonials from you. What I mean with that is that I am looking for your little story or sentence about how the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” has helped you to find events or to discover new interests or anything else positive about the Dublin Event Guide. Please explicitly tell me if I can use your name with your testimonial. I would like to use your real and honest recommendation to explain to other people why more than 9100 people read this newsletter every week! (BTW if you have suggestions for improvements, you can send them to me as well and I will definitely use them and take them to heart, but I might not use them to promote the Dublin Event Guide, instead I will use them to improve it.) Please send your testimonial to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “My Help” ;-).
And just continue the great job you are doing: Let all your friends, family, colleagues and even strangers know about the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” and tell them that they can go to www.dublineventguide.com to sign up! ;-)
And remember that that Facebook Page is at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide where you (and your friends) can express their LIKE for this newsletter (and where they can sign up too). People can sign up as well by sending an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject SUBSCRIBE DEG if they prefer that.
This might help you to get the word out: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

At this point there is a “Feel Good Slot” every week, where I often mention video clips that are inspirational or uplifting. This week, I came across a situation where I had to decide to either pull through and work hard on a goal or go to alternative route, which was to give up and forget about that goal. Were you ever in situation where giving up or doubling the effort were the alternatives? Les Brown captures that well here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4yNVNsAck4

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week only Sally P. and Johan S. helped with a MUCH appreciated donation! Thanks a lot! To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide, I need another bit more. – MY part is to give 25 hours per week for no pay to make sure that YOU get the Dublin Event Guide every week. Could you help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year? That’s a bargain!! :-) It is to cover the cost, but even if it was pay for me, imagine, it would be less than 1 cent per hour (52 weeks x 25 hours = 1300 hours). Maybe I should ask for a LOT more??? ;-)
BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads, then please note that only if you click on the link in this newletter/e-zine when you, for example, order books from bookdepository, a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing and if you don’t click on the link here to start your purchase, I don’t get anything either. And it is similar for most of the other ads.
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just EUR 0.25 per newsletter, you definitely have that much!). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent? www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend is mad busy, if I could be at a number of places at the same time, I would do that. ;-)
Today I will try to go to the Temple Bar Festival launch (see Friday events).
On Satuday in Temple Bar the “Made in Temple Bar” Festival will take place. In the Liberties (Dublin 8) the new Cooper’s Courtyard Market interests me and then there are the other two big festivals: Rose Festival in Raheny (with Viking Festival) and the Bray Summer Fest. Oh and on top of that you have the rare opportunity to see high quality baseball matches in Dublin. ALL this takes place on one Saturday.
On Sunday luckily the Rose Festival and Viking Festival are still on, so you can do it either on Sat or Sun. Bray Summer Fest and Temple Bar Festival are still taking place as well, but NOT with the same programme as on Saturday, so you might have to choose wisely. And then there is the Dublin Duck Race at 15:20 at the Liffey and in the evening the Zombification and Saucy Sundays with the great Mob Fandango. In the end the Fireworks in Bray at 23:00 in will probably win over all other evening events.
Monday comes with mainly children events, so I can focus on work. ;-) And on Tuesday I will do my own stuff as well, but on Wednesday the interesting Refresh Dublin series runs another event. And there is an intriguing sounding Theatre performance in the woods of Belfield (UCD). On top of that The Cold 100, a band that I would love to hear is in the Workman’s Club and the reliable Inn Jokes in Kilmainham are taking place as well. Arghhh! What will I choose?
On Thursday I would definitely go to the Dublin Skillshare if I had time. This is an event that fascinates me and I Hope I will get a chance to write lots more about it in coming weeks and months!
What a mad week!

______Competition______________
PADDY CASEY + PHELIM DREW – CHARITY CONCERT
Nichola from the LetsDoItForBen.com charity contacted me during the week. The organisation is trying to raise funds for 7 year old Ben Murphy. Ben was born normally, but after a vaccination a sequence of events was kicked off that lead to serious epileptic seizures and the discovery that Ben had a metabolic disorder called SCAD, which prevents the body converting certain fats into energy. This condition is a life long and life threatening disorder and there are only 4 children in Ireland that have the same condition. There is a chance that doctors in the USA would be able to help Ben, but the family doesn’t have the money to get Ben checked and possibly treated, so they are running events to raise the money. And the Benefiz Night Nichola told me about sounds interesting: On Fri 22 July Paddy Casey, Phelim Drew and Mick Fitzgerald will be in in Ballyfermot Club, Dublin 10 to help the fundraising efforts for LetsDoItForBen.com Doors open at 20:00 and tickets are EUR 15. Reserve them on 087 6327208. All proceeds go to LetsDoItForBen.com and you can find out more on the website or on www.facebook.com/letsdoitforben. The charity has made 2 pairs of tickets available for a competition and hopes that you will all tell your friends about the event. If you want to win a pair of tickets you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with FOR BEN in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 18:00 on Tues 19 July.
COMEDY CHARITY NIGHT – SUGAR CLUB
On 26 July Reachout.com is hosting a comedy night at The Sugar Club. MCd by funny man Fred Cooke, the night will feature some of the country’s top comic talent, including Jack Wise, Eric Lalor and Shazwanda. ReachOut.com is a service dedicated to taking the mystery out of mental health, to remove the taboos and take mental health issues out into the open. All proceeds from the sales of tickets from this event will go to helping ReachOut.com deliver the best service it can to young people with something on their minds.
Fresh from his performance at this year’s Street Performance World Championship, Jack Wise will mesmerise the audience with his cocktail of comedy and magic all served up with a solid slice of sarcasm. Eric Lalor will leave the audience with a warm fuzzy feeling and lots of laughter and the razor sharp North Dublin wit of Shazwanda will provide the balance to the warm fuzzy feeling but will not be less laughter-inducing. Tickets cost EUR 20 and are available here entertainment.ie/event/Comedy/The-Sugar-Club//2594470.htm. The event starts at 20:00 and is for over 18s only. Visit www.reachout.com to see more about its service.
I got one pair of tickets for this event for a competition and if you want to win the pair of tickets you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with REACHOUT in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 18:00 on Tues 19 July.
EYP TEA PARTY & FASHION SHOW – WESTBURY HOTEL
The European Young Professionals (EYP) invite to a Tea Party & Fashion Show on 22 July in the Westbury Hotel. The Dublin Fire Brigade will be at the event and you will be allowed to take pictures of them in exchange for donations for Barnardos. Then you can admire some of Dublin’s finest fashions as local talented designers take to the stage and showcase their creations. Surprise performances and other entertainment by artists including DJ Byron will entertain you throughout the evening. This year’s show is headlined by Irish designers Michael Leong, Richard Lewis and Yasmin Velloza and also includes fashion by Eilis Boyle, Mo Muse, Claire O’Connor and Wendy’s Wardrobe amongst others. The evening will also include a display of fashion by some of Dublin’s young fashion professionals including Umit Kutluk and Lucy Gilmor Murphy Hats. The afterparty will take place in Lilies Bor dello nightclub in Grafton Street. Proceeds of the event will be donated to Barnardos Children’s Charity of Ireland. Tickets are EUR 20 at the door or EUR 18 if you buy online via: www.facebook.com/pages/EYP-Dublin/261877113874?sk=app_163538337002366 and find out more details on www.facebook.com/eypdublin#!/event.php?eid=243967705616448
EYP has made one ticket available for a Dublin Event Guide Reader and to win this ticket you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with EYP SHOW in the subject line and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 18:00 on Tues 19 July.

______Dublin News______________
TWITTER AND FLICKR USE IN DUBLIN
On broadsheet.ie I came across a map yesterday that fascinated me. It shows the geographical distribution of Twitter and Flickr users across Dublin: www.flickr.com/photos/walkingsf/5935470794/sizes/l So interesting to see that for Dublin! But I wonder how they determined that because where I use Twitter is not that easily identifiable (I don’t use an iPhone that keeps location records!! ;-) ). The broadsheet article is here www.broadsheet.ie/2011/07/14/and-dublin-on-twitter-blue-and-flickr-red/ and it is based on this article www.theatlanticwire.com/technology/2011/07/beautiful-illustration-where-flickr-and-twitter-are-used/39712/ and that article shows world maps which make a little more sense to me and which are interesting too. Oh and if you want to reach out to me on Twitter, look for @joergst
THE O2 / POINT THEATRE CLOSED
I was surprised when I heard that the O2/Point Theatre closed its doors last Tuesday! Don’t worry, though, it is not forever. ;-) BUT it is until 14 September, that is for TWO months. I can understand that there are some less INDDOR concerts in the summer, but NOTHING for two months? That is a bit surprising. theo2.ie/event-listing/ Dolly Parton (!!) will be the one that will burst the doors open again!

Free TRANSPORT TO BLACKROCK MARKET
Maria Golia who runs an Italian stall with books, chocolate and more at the Blackrock Market told me that Blackrock Market operates a refund scheme for transport and parking cost. Smart idea! Go with your bus/DART ticket or your Pay&Display parking thingie to the management of Blackrock Market and they will give you a voucher that can be spent in Blackrock Market. I suggest you take that voucher and spend it at Maria’s stall! ;-) …noo, you don’t HAVE to, but if you see Maria, say HI to her from the Dublin Event Guide Community. :-). Here is the confirmation:

All volunteers will be provided with a Triathlon t-shirt and goodie bag, and will be invited to the awards ceremony which will take place on the East Pier at 12:30. ———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 8000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
More to come here!

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.
LIFE IMITATING ART – PHOT EXHIBITION – PEPE’S RESTAURANT
01-31 July: Peppe’s Italian Restaurant, 31 North Brunswick Street, Dublin 7
“Life Imitating Art” is a Photographic Exhibition by Jeanette Lowe, a contemporary photographic artist based in Dublin AND a reader of the Dublin Event Guide! :-) Using the American artist, Edward Hopper, as her inspiration Jeanette Lowe takes photographs of Dublin City Centre locations at night and then “de-clutters” them to remove items a painter might have chosen not to represent – rubbish, signage, advertising, street markings, wires, vehicles etc. The result is a set of images which are both calm and engaging and almost painting like. A quirky touch to this exhibition is that it takes place in one of the locations photographed: Peppe’s Italian Restaurant in Smithfield. 2011.photoireland.org/program/life-imitating-art/
www.jeanettelowe.ie
IMAGES OF GERMANY – THE COMPLEX (SMITHFIELD)
09-30 July: 12:00-18:00 daily – The Complex, Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7
On the occasion of the OSTKREUZ agency’s 15th anniversary the photographers decided to examine the present condition of the country in which they live. Their “Images of Germany” exhibition offers a multifaceted panorama of the supposedly familiar and the new. One recurrent theme in all of the eight photographic sequences is the concept of native identity or homeland – formulated in the pervasive yet elusive German term “Heimat” – as a geographical, social and political determinant, but also as an expression of sentiments and yearnings. Admission is free.
Images of Germany. 8 photographic positions. Agency Ostkreuz
DUBLIN FLAMENCO FESTIVAL – PHOTO EXHIBITION
The Dublin Flamenco Festival will take place from 23-31 July with lots of performances in the Helix, DCU, Dublin 9. In addition there will be workshops, conferences and talks taking place in various venues around Dublin and on top of all that there will be a photo exhibition curated by Olivier Cornet (olliart).
Nathalie Moyano and Damian Power, the two directors of Peña Flamenca El Indalo (the Dublin-based non-profit organisation behind the festival) are exhibiting 20 of their flamenco-themed photographs. The exhibition will be open 14-31 July at the festival headquarters in The Liffey Trust Centre, Upper Sheriff Street (Entrance through The Green Room Bar). Opening hours: Mon-Fri 16:30-21:30, Sat+Sun 10:30-18:30. www.dublinflamencofestival.com

MADE IN TEMPLE BAR – TEMPLE BAR FESTIVAL
15-24 July: Temple Bar
The 20th anniversary of Temple Bar is celebrated with a 10 day Festival full of events. You can find some background or Overview in the Friday section of this Dublin Event Guide. And you will find the detailed programme here www.templebar.ie/Upload/EventTheme/file/56/Large_0616201111514200774.pdf The Friday events are listed in the Friday section and are really the main non-ticketed events of the weekend. There are some Family events that don’t require tickets and then there are many events that are free but need tickets.
On Saturdays Temple Bar is always busy with the Food Market (which currently split up in lots of locations) and the Designer Mart in Cow’s Lane. So there will be less events taking place during the day. And maybe because a Saturday evening comes typically with a certain less-culture-rich atmosphere, the movie screenings take all place on Sunday. On Sunday some Family events are there for you to enjoy even if you don’t have any tickets.
Otherwise, there is no big headline event, that I would say you HAVE to go to.
Because there is a big ugly hole on Meeting House Square (because work for building a umbrella like roof construction discovered archaeological finds) this place that is normally used for events like this is not available, so all has to be improvised a little. (Example: Instead of using the big screen for Outdoor Movie Screenings that is on Meeting House Square, now the screenings will have to take place in Cow’s Lane.) I am not sure if that is a reason for having more ticketed events than usually at events like that. (I remember the absolutely outstanding Temple Bar Diversions Festival in 2006!!)
So, expect a nice festival and good atmosphere, but if you missed getting tickets for any events, you will have to search a bit harder this time.
I am looking forward to the time when Meeting House Square is back for proper use!!
COOPER’S COURTYARD MARKET – DUBLIN 8
Sat 16 July: 10:00-15:30 – Bond Street, Dublin 8 (near the Guinness Storehouse)
The Cooper’s Courtyard Market is a brand new market around the corner from Guinness Storehouse. Cooper’s Cafe and consignment store Eco Chic are hosting this Market on Sat in the courtyard that they share, to enliven Bond Street a bit and to offer a new focal point in the area. There will be home made baking, plants, flowers, cupcakes, juices, breads, eggs, vegetables, art, face painting, American style baking, jams, relishes, jewellery and lots more. From 11:00-12:00 “Sweet Gun Molly will perform live music and the trio “Strings and Reeds” will follow from 12:15 to 15:30. Admission is free. Even stall holders won’t have to pay high fees to be part of it, but just a contribution to the cost of the musicians. So, the atmosphere should be very friendly and inviting. Check it out this Saturday and from then on every second Saturday of the month. I will be there at some stage this week and I might see you. ;-) www.facebook.com/cooperscourtmarket
BRAY SUMMER FEST 2011
08 July – 07 August: Bray Sea Front
In the middle of “summer”, the Bray Summer Fest is a reliable festival for many years. I don’t know how good it was in the first 25 of its 30 years, but in the last 5 years, I regularly went to Bray for the Summer Fest and was always impressed. Bray is not the biggest place, but they always put a good programme together and with highlights like the Fireworks, the Airshow and – new this year – an Africa Day and a Charity Day, there is something for nearly everybody. This year the festival runs for a whole month. Starting on 08 July, it will continue until 07 August. Check out the timetable here www.braysummerfest.com/festival-timetable/ Have a look at the LONG list of bands that perform on the bandstand at the sea front.
This weekend is one of the two main weekends. Lots of events will take place. More bands are playing on the bandstand, a Food&Craft Market, Street Performers and a Body&Soul Festival will take place on Sat. On Sunday the Rowing Club Regatta and a Fireworks at 23:00 will be a reason to go to Bray (come early, there is little parking and there are LOTS of people coming for it).
+Fri: On the bandstand: The Rhythm Corporation Drummers & Damcers, Blue Fever, Original Ru de Boys, Ryan Sheridan.
+ Sat: On the bandstand: Empire Saints, Sharon Shannon, Rattle & Hum.
+ Sun: On the bandstand Paul Macdonald Band, Gypsy Rebbal Rebel, Amoric, The Queen Experience and then at 23:00 the Fireworks. e Backdoors
In addition the FunFair and Kidszone will be open from this weekend. Two fireworks will take place, one on Sun 17 July and the other on Sun 07 Aug. The Air Show will be on Sun 24 July and the Africa Day will take place on 06 Aug.
All outdoor events (and most events are outdoor events) are free. The website provides a lot of information, especially the page www.braysummerfest.com/events/ but oddly the website and the Festival brochure www.braysummerfest.com/Bray-Summerfest-2011.pdf are not very similar and it seems you can’t use one without the other if you want comprehensive information.
I plan to go to Bray for some of the gigs, maybe on Saturdy and – if I manage – to the Fireworks on Sunday.
DUBLIN ROSE FESTIVAL – ST. ANNE’S PARK (RAHENY)
Sat-Sun 16-17 July: 10:00-18:00 – St. Anne’s Park, Raheny, Dublin 5
The big St. Anne’s Park in Raheny on the way to Howth is the venue for Dublin’s Rose Festival. The park has lots of roses (over 25,000 plants) and the festival is always held at the peak of the flowering season, so in addition to all the other entertainment, you can see wonderful Rose Gardens.
Sunday is ‘Family Activity Day’ with lots of children’s entertainment for young children and teens. There will be music and entertainment on both days and the Rose Festival will be the home for a Viking Village this weekend with a replica long-ship on display and groups of ‘Vikings’, who will give displays of falconry and battle re-enactments. Admission to the festival and car parking is free, but – if the weather is nice – expect a BIG amount of people and many cars.
The Rose Festival Programme in detail can be found here:
www.dublincity.ie/Press/PressReleases/pressreleasesJuly2011/Pages/StAnnesParkRoseFestival2011.aspx
There will be trade stands with Rose Growers, Garden Centres, Horticultural Societies and Nurseries. Storytelling will take place in the Library Bus (11:00-12:30 on Sat) and in the afternoon of both days music and performances between 13:00-17:00 will entertain you. In the Red Stables at St. Anne’s Park, Drop in Art Workshops will take place (10:00-16:00) and there is an exhibition and a food market as well. On Sunday there will be Children’s Entertainment throughout the day, with T-shirt workshops for teens, Outdoor climbing wall and archery and many other pursuits.
On both days the Viking Village will be a further attraction and all details are described in the next section.
DUBLIN VIKING FESTIVAL
Sat-Sun 16-17 July: 11:00-17:30 – St. Anne’s Park, Raheny, Dublin 15
This is the fourth year for the Vikings Festival, in previous years it was a one day event at the Wood Quay between the Liffey and Christ Church. This year, it is bigger and is integrated with the Rose Festival. There will be battle re-enactments and demonstrations of Viking skills including Falconry and Archery exhibitions.

ARCHIVE AT LUNCHTIME – FILM SCREENING – IFI
Daily in July: 13:10: Irish Film Institute, 6 Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Over the last two months the IFI ran free screenings of films from the IFI Irish Film Archive on Mondays and Wednesdays. The films are really interesting and became so popular that in July the Archive films will be screened every day, but – to make my life interesting when I try to describe that to you :-) – the two films are shown on alternating days. Simply collect your free tickets at the IFI Box Office when you get there. (You might have to pay a 1 Euro membership for the day.)
The first film is “Shamrocks Sky High”, sponsored by Aer Lingus and produced by Vincent Corcoran. This film from 1968 shows the company’s operations in Ireland and overseas. The film looks behind the scenes at Dublin Airport and at the expertise involved in developing and maintaining Ireland’s national airline. This film is 30 minutes long and is shown on all days with EVEN dates (2,4,6,8,10,….). www.ifi.ie/cinema/dispfilm_07.asp?filmID=7437&Date=04/07/2011&PageID=15
The second film is in fact a sequence of two shorter films: “Gael Linn: Amharc Eireann Newsreel Compilation” from 1956-1964 (7min) lets you marvel at inaugural flights to Malaga and New York; new jet airliners; training of air hostesses; and the arrival of stars. And “Radharc: Blessing the Aer Lingus Fleet” from 1962(12 min) shows that Aer Lingus planes are named after great Irish missionaries; are blessed annually by members of the clergy and carry us safely to destinations all over the world. These two shorter films are shown on all days with ODD dates (1,3,5,7,…). www.ifi.ie/cinema/dispfilm_07.asp?filmID=7436&Date=05/07/2011&PageID=15

MARIN – GUIDED EXHIBITION TOUR – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
Tues 19+26 July: 18:00 – Instituto Cervantes, Lincoln House, Lincoln Place (near National Gallery), Dublin 2
Luis Ramón Marín (1908-1940) was one of the first photographers to get out into the streets to record daily life and the news with his camera, supplying magazines and illustrated dailies which were enjoying a heyday during the first decades of the last century. Moreover, Marín is a pioneer of aerial photography in Spain, an aspect of his work begun in 1913, hardly a decade after the development of aviation itself. Marín was essentially a press photographer (he published more than 1,000 photos per year). He was, amongst his other jobs, press correspondent to the Royal Family, which he followed even during the holidays (thus many of the photographs have an unusual family air). He recorded the main events of Spanish cultural and political life and portrayed its leading figures. He also turned his lens on street scenes and anonymous faces of the common people.
The Instituto Cervantes will show an exhibition of his photographs from 07 July – 23 September (Mon-Thurs: 14:00-19:00, Fri 10:00-14:00, Closed on Bank Holidays).

There’s fuzz, there’s harmonica, there’s volume; there’s tube amps, heavy drums & humbuckers. Pure rock n’ roll flows from the core of The Cold 100, however there’s a seething undercurrent of the blues nestling underneath.” Find out more about the band and their style:

This is a brilliant idea and concept and I hope it will catch on big time! The topic this time is a bit geeky for many of you, but read this anyway and think about what you could teach! I definitely intend to offer my support.
Dublin Skillshare is designed for the curious, creative and inquisitive who like to know a little bit about everything. At Skillshare you can share your skill and learn from others. From programming to pruning and hacking to hip-hop. And all is free. Whether you have a skill you can teach or a skill you want to learn, let Dublin Skillshare know and they will try to put a class together.
On Thursday the calls is taught by Stephen Howell (Institute of Technology, Tallaght Computing Department) and Stephen will introduce the concepts of minimal graphics programming, and show you how to interface with external devices like Kinect. You can read about processing here to get an idea what it’s all about. And after that you will get a chance to design an interactive art/science exhibit and then hack it together. (You should bring your Laptop!) The event is suitable for everybody, but you will understand more if you have some basic knowledge of programming (any language will do).
The classes are free, but if you enjoyed the class, you could offer the teacher a skill you have, like baking them a cake or designing a logo for a project.
The event will take place in the Science Gallery and Admission is free. www.facebook.com/DublinSkillshare Reserve your place on this site

NATIONAL MUSEUM EVENT
The “Curator’s Tour: The Replica High Crosses” will take place on Fri 22 July from 12:30-13:00 in Collins Barracks (Decorative Arts & History). The tour is for adults.
“Get the inside story with curator, Padraig Clancy and hear at first-hand about their significance as replicas and as important objects in their own right. Places allocated on a first-come basis from 15 minutes before event starts.” This exhibition is truly amazing. It is just one single room with crosses, but the impact they have when you enter the room and are not prepared for what you see is BIG. Even if you can’t go to that tour, put the exhibition on your To Do list for one of the next few weekends!

RUBBISH AT OXEGEN
Some might think I am referring to the “singing” of a certain Amanda Brunker at Oxegen (www.youtube.com/watch?v=96bkfkJ5SWg) or her somewhat delusional interview about the successful performance (www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Hb0w4uprkg) and interestingly if you search for the words “Oxegen” and Rubbish” in Google, the first that comes up is Amanda Brunkers name, but I am not referring to that at all.
Though I have to mention something in this context: Somebody filmed the RTE transmission, which shows quite bad singing and the fact that only a handful of people listened (The original: www.youtube.com/watch?v=96bkfkJ5SWg), however RTE then removed that video clip and instead posted a completely remastered video clip on YouTube, which has nothing to do with the original video that was broadcast by RTE. The modified video is here (www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ib3l8Wx45M). Smells like propaganda, re-writing history or censorship to me! You better watch the original soon if you are interested, before RTE pulls it again.
By the way, I don’t think Amanda Brunker has done herself a favour by “singing” at Oxegen, but if she got enjoyment out of it, then why not. Her interview afterwards sounded like she was at a different gig, but even that is ok. I don’t wish her anything bad and whatever she does is her own thing. But RTE’s interfering does disturb me!
—–
However back to the original intention of mentioning REAL rubbish at Oxegen. You might have seen it in the beginning of the week: thejournal.ie posted some pictures of the aftermath of Oxegen and it is a shocking scene:
thedailyedge.thejournal.ie/in-photos-all-that-you-can-leave-behind-the-oxegen-2011-aftermath-174714-Jul2011/#slide-slideshow9
What people leave that amount of rubbish behind? Probably the same ones that drop their empty cigarette boxes and food wrappers in the street!?

LOTS of summer events again this week and all we would need now is SUMMER. Imagine if we had warm temperatures in Ireland to enjoy all the culture even more. It would be such a great little country. …and we can’t even blame the government for the low temperatures. So what to do? Pack your umbrella, a warm jacket, ignore the weather and enjoy the “summer” either way! ;-)
Have a great weekend!
Take care,

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
