Hi all!

This week I am super late, so I will not write much here in the introduction. I rather get the mail out to you. Over the coming weeks I will TRY to bring the sending time forward again, but the events are getting more and more and it is a serious challenge.
[ad]
I hope you get a chance to look at the Dublin Event Guide even if it comes so late, but the goal would be to send it by around 11:00 on a Friday morning. I am not sure how I can achieve that and won’t promise yet when it will happen, but I will do my best! :-)

Did you see that we made it to 8500 subscribers? And on Facebook we are now more than 4500. Thanks for your continued support!

Next week I have some news for you, so I might leave it at a very very short introduction today and use the “unused words” next week. ;-)

Tell your friends and colleagues about the Dublin Event Guide: They can subscribe on www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide by clicking on “Join Email List” in the menu on the left or they can send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject SUBSCRIBE DEG. This might help you to get the word out: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf

We now are more than 4500 people on the Dublin Event Guide – Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide as well. Come over and click LIKE too. Be part of this growing online facebook community and tell your friends. You will get last minute updates and event reminders through the Facebook Page! And I know (and you know it too!) that you don’t want to miss out! :-)

This week’s Feel Good Slot sends you a video and a question. Did you ever fall/fail at something and feel like giving up because you were convinced you won’t be able to do make it? Today’s video clip tells you to Never, Never, Never give up!! Watch it, it is good!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=cM5A1K6TxxM

This week Monika K., Janine McK., Tom D. and Sebastian B. were able to help and I appreciate it hugely. To cover the cost for this Event Guide, I need about 4 donations every week and to improve the Event Guide I need another bit more. My part is to give 25 hours per week for no pay to make sure that YOU get the Dublin Event Guide every week. Could you help with just 25 cent per week or EUR 12 per year? That’s a bargain! It is to cover the cost, but even if it was pay for me, imagine it would be 1 cent per hour. Maybe I should ask for a LOT more??? ;-)
BTW: If you think that I make money from advertisement because you see a few ads, then please note that only if you click on the link in this e-zine when you order books from bookdepository a (very) small amount (EUR 0.30 on average!) will be paid to me. If you don’t BUY, I get nothing. And it is similar for most of the other ads.

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can give as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just EUR 0.25 per newsletter, you definitely have that much!). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent? www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

EASON BOOKS AND MORE
Eason’s don’t just sell books of all sorts and for all areas of interest, they sell many other things as well and run regular book signings and readings, so whatever you’re into, get into eason! ad-emea.doubleclick.net/clk;239778697;62611533;y

This weekend I will go to the Calcutta Run BBQ and maybe the O La Go La Mental Birthday (of a Mental Health Organisation). The Headphone Disco (tickets required) and the Barretstown Fun Run Family Day are other interesting events.

On Sun I might go to the Iveagh Garden Family Day. I love the Iveagh Garden. On Wed the Better Fashion Week sounds interesting – as long as you are interested in fashion. Only a few events are free, but better few than nothing. Refresh Dublin in the Science Gallery is definitely worth a visit and the Inn Jokes in Kilmainham as well.
Then on Thursday the Love the City Spectacle and the amazing Art Giveaway in the Mad Art Gallery (check it out!) are cool events.

DUBLIN CITY SOUL FESTIVAL
Did you know that the Soul Festival is not just the Soul Picnic on the Sunday, but this year starts the outdoor events on the Saturday with the Rising Stars @ Merrion Square. But even these two big events are only a fraction of all the events that take place. There is a Gospel Brunch in the Church Pub in Jervis Street where “my” Gardiner Street Gospel Choir will sing on Sunday (and the Maynooth Gospel Choir will be there on Saturday). And there will be the Soul Jam in the Workman’s Club. (You can still enter the competition for tickets for this event a bit further down!). And even that is by far not all yet. I will tell you more next week and if you can’t wait check out www.soul.ie where you find all about the upcoming Dublin City Soul Festival (26-29 May).

QUEEN – EXPECT MAYHEM IN DUBLIN FROM SUNDAY
It is not the protesters that I expect will cause the mayhem and chaos, it will be the Garda and the “Security Forces” that will make us look forward to the day when both Queen and Barack Obama are gone again.
From Sunday (!!!!) parking will be prohibited in large parts of the City. Sure the Queen only arrives in Tuesday, but in their wisdom the Garda have decided to make life difficult well in advance. About 50 streets are affected in Dublin. And when she is here, expect sudden and odd street closures for arbitrary amounts of time. It was even announced that “between 17-20 May, the N7, N4, M50, Phoenix Park and the north and south quays in Dublin – along with adjacent bridges and streets – will be temporarily closed at certain times.” Can you imagine what that means? Ohh, and you can get searched randomly as well if you are in the area.
The Zoo will be closed, Farmleigh House will be closed, there is no parking allowed in Phoenix Park from Sun 15 may for 10 (!!) days until 25 May. And the Science Gallery will be closed as well, so expect MANY more buildings, streets and areas to be closed. For a description of the full madness that is about to unfold check jrnl.ie/135260 and
www.aaireland.ie/AA/AA-Roadwatch/Event-Guide/Visits-by-Queen-Elizabeth-II-and-President-Barack-Obama.aspx And once the Queen is gone, then Obama will arrive. Use public transport as much as you can in the next 10 days!

OBAMA SPEECH IN COLLEGE GREEN!?
Interestingly I found out that the security forces were never told that Obama might be in Croke Park, this suggests that only the media speculated about it (www.sbpost.ie/news/croke-park-rally-planned-for-obama-55656.html), but the organisers never seriously considered it. The security forces were only told about O’Connell Street or College Green. Was that maybe done on purpose to side track potential troublemakers? Details of the visit are still not available, but they better release it soon if they expect people to come.

MATCHBOX THEATRE CLOSING + LE CAFÉ DES IRLANDAIS
It only opened at the beginning of the year and is already closing again. The Matchbox Theatre, this small but perfectly formed little theatre in the basement of “Le Café Des Irlandais” in South Great George’s Street is closing because the “Le Café des Irlandais” is already closing after less than 8 months. The restaurant did a good few things right (low-ish priced main courses, good food, niche food choices), but there were many things that went wrong. The atmosphere was always one of “inexperience” and the two times I was there, they didn’t have the food I wanted despite the fact that it was one of the headline choices. Pity that they are gone, but it is not a MASSIVE surprise. The news from the Matchbox Theatre is that they are looking for a new venue and if you have any suggestions, let me know and I will forward your suggestions to the management of the Theatre. Closing date is Sun 15 May but the business and the theatre will continue until then. matchboxtheatre.ie/

DISNEY STORE TO OPEN IN GRAFTON STREET
The brand new Disney Store for Dublin in 60-61 Grafton Street will open on Wed 18 May at 11:00. One could speculate that the purpose of the Queen’s visit in Ireland is to open the store, but maybe that is just a speculation. ;-) Expect some magic and glitter and maybe even child friendly fireworks for the opening … and as always, you heard it in the Dublin Event Guide first! ;-) The website www.disney.ie diverts to the UK site and there is no additional information, but some details I got say that the store will be 2 storeys and will be “featuring groundbreaking technology, interactive storytelling and Disney Store exclusive merchandise […]. Key features of the Dublin store will include the Disney Store Theatre, where children can choose from over 50 clips to be watched on a giant screen as well as take part in free daily events, and the magic mirrors in the Disney Princess Castle, where each of the Princesses are brought to life.”

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE FINAL
Everything is happening next week! Not only the Queen will cause chaos, in addition 25,000 football fans will come to Dublin to watch the UEFA Europe League Final on Wed 18 May. The two teams in the final are ironically BOTH Portuguese (FC Porto will play against SC Braga). The venue will be the Aviva stadium and many of the fans might come on the same day and on the same route as the Queen (from the airport to the City Centre). Stay at home if you can! :-) www.breakingnews.ie/sport/europa-league-final-tickets-released-for-public-sale-504838.html

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. Being mentioned here and being seen by the 8000+ readers of the Dublin Event Guide should help to kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very much appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More new company introductions to come!

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Le Blanc is still accepting the franc as payment for goods and services in certain shops although it is technically no longer legal tender, and will continue to accept it until 17 February 2012 a deadline imposed by the Banque de France.

BEALTAINE FESTIVAL 2011
From Sun 01 – Tues 31 May the Bealtaine Festival 2011 will take place. This national arts festival celebrates creativity in the older age (approx. 50+) and hundreds of events are taking place across the country. (Bealtaine is the name of the Celtic festival celebrating springtime.) The Festival embraces all art forms and encourages participation in the Arts by older people as artists, performers, event organisers and audience. From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists.
www.bealtaine.com The complete festival programme can be downloaded here bealtaine.com/sites/all/files/Bealtaine2011.pdf and the programme for the Dublin region is segmented on this page: bealtaine.com/node/93 Nearly all events are free, but often booking is required. – There are sooo many events taking place, that I will not be able to include them all in the Dublin Event Guide. I will include some, but strongly suggest that you check the full programme or the Dublin programme and select the events you are interested in, assuming that you are in the target age group. ;-)

SKERRIES TRADITIONAL MUSIC WEEKEND
13-15 May: Skerries
If you live in or near Skerries in North Dublin, or if you are a fan of Traditional Music, have a look at the Skerries Traditional Music Festival here www.skerriestraditionalmusic.com/events.html

LG HOME ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM LAUNCH
This is a slightly odd event because it isn’t really an event, it is just an introduction of some new 3D TV in Ireland. But it is free and maybe you are interested:
LG’s Life’s Good Lounge Tour showcases the new LG 3D TV, its latest Cinema 3D home entertainment range. From Fri 13 – Sun 15 (09:00-19:00) you can see this new TV in the Ilac Centre, Henry Street, Dublin 1.

YOUNG AND LIVING IN THE CITY – OPEN CITIES EVENT
Fri 13 May: 12:30-14:00: The Creation Arcade, Duke St., Dublin 2
If you are young (16-28) and live in Dublin, then the workshop “Young and Living in the City” could be for you. Designing Dublin help young people to find out why they are not very motivated to get involved in things where they live. (The official line reads: “Designing Dublin assist young people in identifying factors inhibiting their engagement with the social and built environment of their localities.” but that sounds terribly complicated. ;-) ) In this workshop you will learn how to generate new ideas and move them to concepts and then to real projects that have an impact on your neighbourhood. Admission is free but advance booking is required, by sending a mail to aileenfomacs@gmail.com

DUBLIN REVEALED – AUTHOR READING – CENTRAL LIBRARY
06, 13, 20, 27 May: 13:00-14:00 – Central Library, Open Learning Centre, Ilac Centre, Henry St., Dublin 1. The authors are Jennifer Johnson (06 May), Carlo Gébler (13 May), Kevin Barry (20 May), Paul Murray (27 May). Admission is free, but booking is required: openlearning@dublincity.ie or 01-8734333 . www.dublincitypubliclibraries.ie

LOVE MUSIC HATE RACISM – SWEENY MONGREL
Fri 13 May: 21:00 – Sweeney Mongrel, Dame Street, Dublin 2
Love Music Hate Racism are inviting to a live music event on the 3 floors of Sweeney Mongrel. The line up is Axis Of, 24 Broken Amps, The Whipround, Ka Tet, Town Criers, Noxious Toyz, The Dubtones, Mongohorn. The guys from LMHR always put me in a slightly tricky situation because they suggest a donation of EUR 4 to fund their activities. So, the event is free and is not at the same time. Hmmm, need to think about the inclusion of such events in the future. www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=106327442788099&ref=mf

OPERA IN ITALY – ISTITUTO ITALIANO
Mon 16 May: 19:00 – Italian Institute of Culture, 11 Fitzwilliam Square East, Dublin 2
Some organisations are extremely good in keeping their website up to date and providing all details about events, others could improve. The Italian Institute of Culture belongs to the latter group. They regularly run events that seem interesting, but often some relevant information is missing. This time I can’t see what TYPE of event will take place on 16 May. I assume it is a talk/lecture with the exciting ;-) title “Santo di Patria indefinito amor – Opera theatres in Italy: seats of musical creativity and social interaction leading to the drive for independence” by Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini.

OFFENSIVE IMMUNE DEFENCES – LECTURE – RDS
Thurs 19 May – 19:00 – RDS Concert Hall., Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
Over the last decade immunologists have discovered how the immune system senses the presence of an infection. Several families of genes have been identified which recognise foreign substances present on bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that are not present on, or in, our own cells. By sensing these foreign molecules the immune system gets started and, if successful, will eliminate the infection from the body.
Dr Kate A. Fitzgerald, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts is a leading researcher in the field of innate immunology and the role it plays in a range of autoimmune diseases. Dr Fitzgerald’s talk will illustrate what happens when the body’s own defences turn offensive and attack its own cells. This enhanced insight into the reaction of the immune system to infection is significantly influencing our understanding of autoimmune diseases.
Dr Fitzgerald is the recipient of the 2011 Irish Society for Immunology Public Lecture Award. The Award will be presented at the beginning of the lecture which is part of an annual RDS Irish Times lecture programme organised in association with the Irish Society for Immunology.

UNFAIR RESTAURATEURS PICK THE WRONG TARGET
An article during the week reported that the Small Firms Association asked the Government to allow small businesses to be exempt from some pieces of employment legislation and the Restaurant Association of Ireland don’t want to pay overtime for Sunday work. I can see that many small companies and restaurants are in difficulty and in financially precarious situations. But why do they always focus on the “little people” when they want to get reductions? We know that rents and rates are absolutely crippling and are far higher than the personnel cost, so why don’t they get together demand loudly a change there?? You can argue about the sense of a minimum salary and overtime payments, etc and personally I think the drop in rents and some other cost would possibly justify leaving the minimum salary at EUR 7.65, instead of raising it to EUR 8.65 again. But it is really unacceptable how these business organisations keep their mouth shut about rents and rates, but try to screw the low salary employees. www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/restaurateurs-seek-drop-in-wages-for-staff-504301.html

The “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” is progressing, I had planned to announce some positive changes this week, but will have to wait one more week. It will be worth it. ;-) Make sure that you check out next week’s newsletter/e-zine! Until then, have a great week!

Take care,

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
