Hi all!

This is Event Guide 47 and that means we are only 5 weeks away from the 1st Anniversary of the Event Guide. Actually, it is 4 weeks until that big day because in the first month of writing the Event Guide I missed one week. It has never ever happened since! ;-) If, however, the weekly mail didn’t arrive in your Inbox at some stage since you subscribed, please check your spam folder. Last week many Hotmail didn’t get the Event Guide at all and many Gmail users had to fish it out of their Spam Folder. Very annoying, I know, but unfortunately I can’t do much about it at the moment. If you need help sorting it in your mail box, send me a mail.

In my private calendar there are two music festivals in the year for which I would even rearrange my holidays. The first one in the year is the Dublin City Soul Festival in the City Centre and in Merrion Square and the second one later, in August, is the Festival of World Culture in Dun Laoghaire. And the good news is that the Dublin City Soul Festival is just around the corner! It will start on Monday week (19 May) and will culminate in the Soul Picnic in Merrion Square on the following Sunday (25 May). The Soul Festival is only in its second year, but last year was an amazing event and I know that Chris Maher, the founder and boss of the festival, has worked very very hard with his team to provide an even better event. The details about the week-long festival I will share with you in next week’s Event Guide, but Chris was so nice to make some tickets available for a competition, so read on and check out the competition section.

A content-related question for which I would appreciate your opinions/suggestions: Every week there are lots of very interesting exhibitions opening in different Galleries around Dublin and currently I am listing quite a lot of them. Are you happy with that or would you prefer less (or more) exhibition announcements? Drop me mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com) if you want to share your opinion with me.

And one other thing: The Trinity Ball is on tonight from 22:00-04:45 (licensing laws don’t seem to apply here!?!?!?), so expect mayhem on the streets of Dublin. Massive queues around Trinity College at opening time and shocking scenes of drunkenness seem to go hand in hand with this event. Tickets are long sold out and are the hottest currency on trading websites at the moment. I looked at the entertainment line-up and have never heard a single name of the bands or DJs that will perform, but I guess that is just a sign of my age. :-P

DUBLIN CITY SOUL FESTIVAL
Last year we (the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir) sang at the headline concert of the Dublin City Soul Festival in Mansion House and at the Open Air Soul Picnic in Merrion Square on the Sunday. It was a great atmosphere and a super festival all around. The only slight downside was that somewhat less people came to the Soul Picnic than we had hoped for. And that is when I finally decided to start writing this Event Guide. Well, the year is nearly full, 47 issues of the Event Guide made it to you and the Dublin Event Guide Community has now grown to 1150 subscribers, with the facebook group standing at 1304 members.
I will tell you lots more about the Dublin City Soul Festival in next weeks newsletter, however, for this week, the most important thing is that you make sure that you put it in your diary. :-)
Chris Maher and his team have put a brilliant line-up together again and the Soul Picnic in Merrion Square AND many other events are free. In addition Chris has made a number of tickets available for some non-free events and you should definitely check out the website www.dublincitysoulfestival.ie. In the menu bar at the bottom of the page you will find “What’s On” and you should AT LEAST have a look at the “Band” section. I hope to have some more information for you about the line-up for the Sunday (currently still a closely guarded secret) in next week’s Event Guide and I hope to see you at the Festival!!!!!
Chris was very generous (Thanks!!) and made SIX pairs of tickets available for different events for the Dublin Event Guide Community. The gigs are

Oh, and for the people that love soul and have the funds to pay a little more: If you want to hear a BRILLIANT soul band, the Rance Allen Group, go to the Soul Jam concert on Saturday (24 May) in the Sugar Club. I was at the Rance Allen Group concert last year and they literally blow your socks off! There were only 300 tickets available (EUR 40) and I expect it will sell out if it hasn’t already! Katie Hughes told me that The Ratzingers, a brilliant soul+funk band, are playing tonight (Fri, 09 May) in Zanzibar on Ormond Quay from 19:00-21:00. I know them well and will try to be there for the gig, they are great! So if you want to hear some good music before you go home and into the weekend get to Zanzibar. Admission is free.

WORLDVIEW FILM CLUB – FILM SCREENING
As every Friday the Worldview Film Club is showing a film free of charge at 19:00 in the National Bahá’í Centre in 24 Burlington Rd, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. This week it will be the movie “Big Fish”. LIGHT HOUSE CINEMA – FOR YOUR INFORMATION
In 1996 the Light House cinema closed its doors in Abbey Street. Now, nearly 12 years later, it will re-open in a new venue: The Light House Cinema opens on 09 May on Smithfield Square. It is a joint initiative of the Arts Council and the Irish Film Board and will be a four screen cinema with a total of 614 seats. Unfortunately cinemas typically don’t offer free screenings, but for the cinema lovers this should still be interesting news.

AXIS ART CENTRE – EXHIBITION
As part of the over 55s Festival “Bealtaine” the Axis Art Centre will show the exhibition “Moments in Time” from 08 May – 30 May in the Café Gallery. It is a group show of work from artists aged 55+. This work has been chosen and curated by
an invited panel of professional artists and curators and displays the wealth of talent and invention existing in art groups and individuals over 55 years of age studying various visual art forms in our community. PAUL MURNAGHAN – THE LAB
“A line describing nothings” is Paul Murnaghan’s new exhibition from 09 May -31 May. Earlier this year, Paul Murnaghan offered members of the public ‘Free Past Life Regressions’ through online and printed advertising. These sessions, which took place at the LAB in April, were offered with the stipulation that participants sit with an artist after the regression and assist them in rendering drawings based on the places and people of their experience. This exhibition continues Murnaghan’s line of enquiry into belief systems and points of intersection between the spiritual, scientific and psychological. FINOLA JONES – OONAGH YOUNG GALLERY

EXHIBITION – DRAIOCHT
“Play” a group show of artists David Beattie, Anita Delaney, Katherine Lamb, Claire Maguire, Lee Welch will run from 089 May-21 June. Draíocht presents Play, in celebration of Spréacha 2008, an exhibition that brings together specifically commissioned works by five Irish based artists that deal with the concept of play. The exhibition will also include a text by writer Tim Stott who will respond to the works in the exhibition and situate them within current discourse concerning gaming and play. EGG & SPOON RACE – DUBLIN IMPROV
The Dublin Improv Movement inviting to the next event on Saturday (10 May). Brian Lenehan told me this: “Dublin Improv Movement, who first came together for a mass-freeze on Grafton Street on the 23rd February, are inviting you and your friends to our “Sports Day” egg-and-spoon race down Henry Street on Saturday, 10th May, at 14:00. All are welcome.” The title is “Performance Art: Slow-Mo Fun Sports Day” and the location for the meeting is Henry St., Dublin 1 (near the Butlers Chocolates Cafe beside the Spire).
Brian continues: “We need as many people (all Dublin Improv members, friends, family and any other randomers) to gather together at the O’Connell Street end of Henry Street at 14:00 exactly. Don’t hang around that spot for too long before-hand, wait around O’Connell St., elsewhere on Henry St., etc (just don’t congregate for too long in the one spot at the meeting-point). Look sporty. If you can, use the “11850 men” as inspiration wearing vests, shorts, sweat-bands, etc., or track-suit or whatever else you like. Bring a desert-spoon and an egg (hard-boiled preferably). If you can’t get a boiled-egg, a raw (not boiled) potato, or kiwi will do. At 14:00 exactly, we will start running with spoons and eggs out-stretched before us IN SLOW MOTION down Henry Street, all the way to the junction of Jervis Street, where we will cross over to the little park (Wolfe Tone Square) to have the prize-giving ceremony. It should take around twenty minutes to “run” the distance. We’ll have a finishing-line always no more than 10 metres ahead of the head of the race, so as to let spectators know that we’re coming.”
I was at the Grafton Street Freeze and it was fun. This event is significantly more active than a freeze :-) but don’t worry, you won’t have to fit to do the slow motion race. :-) Come along for a bit of harmless fun!!! The event will take place no matter what the weather is like!

UNDER THE SEA – FAMILY PROGRAM, NATIONAL GALLERY
The National Gallery offers a regular Saturday Family Program. This Sat 10 May from 15:00-16:00 the theme is “Under the Sea”. The programme is free and is suitable for children from 4 -10 working together with the accompanying adult. PROTEST – ONLINE PETITION TO BAN CLUSTER BOMBS
Cluster bombs have killed and injured thousands of civilians during the last 40 years and continue to do so today. But now there is an opportunity to make them a thing of the past. Starting on 19 May, more than 100 governments will gather in Dublin to negotiate an international ban on cluster bombs. Although civil society has voiced strong outrage at these weapons for more than 30 years, there was an opportunity like this to ban them forever and to transform the futures of those whose lives, families and communities have been shattered.
You can provide support to ensure the Dublin Diplomatic Conference results in the strongest ban possible, with no loopholes, no exceptions and no delays.
The Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC) Ireland has launched its online petition urging the Irish government to ensure that the Dublin negotiations deliver a treaty that will ban all cluster bombs. Check it out at www.stopclusterbombs.ie/petition

PROTEST – SAVE ST. LUKES
The Save St. Lukes campaign is inviting to a protest march on Sat 10 May at 13:00. The march will start at St Luke’s and will go to the Central Bank in Dame Street.

PROTEST – AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL LETTER DAY
The Amnesty International Irish Section invites you to write a letter for a human rights cause close to your heart: “Our Annual Letter-Writing drive will take place in the Mansion House this Sat 10 May from 10:00 – 16:00. Amnesty activists will be out in force encouraging Dubliners to sign letters of support for human rights activists in China, Zimbabwe, Mexico and a number of other countries. Each year hundreds of people take part. It might seem like a very small thing, signing a letter in Dublin city centre, but it is an essential part of keeping up the pressure for improvements in human rights and delivering real change in people’s lives. This year we will be highlighting the plight of the victims of gender based violence in Mexico and prisoners of conscience in Israel, as well as supporting our Human Rights For China postcard campaign. We’re asking you to drop by the Mansion House on Saturday and to give a few moments of your time to help people around the world who are facing oppression and imprisonment.”

Since last Sunday a free Rollerblade Meet & Train for adults is taking place every Sunday from 13:00-14:00 in Phoenix Park. Meeting point is the Papal Cross Car park.

BEALTAINE FESTIVAL
“Bealtaine”, the Irish national festival celebrating creativity in older age is taking place this year from 08 May – 30 May. Taking its name from the ancient Celtic festival celebrating springtime, “Bealtaine” celebrates renewal, creativity and growth in ageing. The Axis Theatre in Ballymun is, in partnership with Dublin
City Council Arts Office, hosting a range of free activities and events to celebrate Bealtaine.
The first one is not free – unless you are over 55 (in that case you should rush to the ticket office of the Axis Theatre to reserve your tickets in person (!) if there are still some available, but the next two are. The events are targeting the over 55s, but I would expect that if you are below that age and want to take part, you won’t be kicked out!

– Grow Your Own – Movie Screening (12 May 14:30, Free) “Grow Your Own” is a gentle sweet-smelling comedy that is blessed with plenty of British charm. Set on an allotment in the North of England, a bunch of grumpy old men spend their days nurturing their beloved allotments, while passing comment on their neighbours’ vegetables.
– Slovak Festival Ensemble with support from The Forever Young Chorus (14 May, 20:00, Free) Vladimir Jablokov is the conductor, founder and solo player of the ‘Slovak Festival Ensemble’. Their style is unusual in that they perform classical music in a way that appeals to all ages and can be appreciated by all audiences nationwide. The Forever Young Chorus is the Finglas/Cabra version of the American Young @ Heart Chorus which visited Dublin last year singing songs of their children and grandchildren. The sounds of Bob Dylan, Carly Simon and U2 can be heard coming from Brookville Court, Finglas lead by musical director Chiara Browne.

From 13-16 May Dublin will be offering a range of cultural events and activities with a Russian (St. Petersburg) theme. CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL – LUNCH TIME LECTURES
During May, Christ Church Cathedral is offering a number of lunch time lectures every Tuesdays 13:15. They are all linked to the restoration of the Christ Church Cathedral from 1871-1878. On 13 May, the topic is “G.E. Street: conservator or restorer?” and will be given by Paul Arnold (Cathedral architect). The event will take place in the Crypt. YOUNG ENVIRONMENTALISTS – SHOWCASE
The ECO-UNESCO’s Young Environmentalist 2008 Showcase and Awards Ceremony will take place in The Round Room of the Mansion House on 13 May.
Entry to the Showcase is free and open to all, from 11:30-13:30 and will include a showcase of 40 Young Environmentalist projects, interactive BioZone, a Creative Recycling Zone, games, activities and more. CECIL KING – IMMA TALKS AND LECTURES
A lecture entitled “Cecil King” will take place on 13 May 2008 in the Lecture Room of the Irish Museum of Modern Art at 17:00. Richard Demarco will discuss Cecil King’s involvement with the international art world and his contribution to the Irish art scene. Richard Demarco is a Scottish artist and promoter of the visual and performing arts and owns the Richard Demarco Gallery. He is a promoter of cultural links with Western Europe. ABBEY TALKS – A POWERFUL TALE: DONAL O’KELLY
In Abbey Theatre’s Abbey Talks series Donal O’Kelly talks about “A Powerful Tale”: A theatrical experience in human form, awardwinning playwright and actor Donal O’Kelly (Catalpa, Bat The Father Rabbit The Son) reflects on how we tell stories. On Tues 13 May from 18:15-19:00.

SUSAN MONTGOMERY – SIGNAL ARTS CENTRE
The Signal Arts Centre is exhibiting “Prasad” by Susan Montgomery. MESSIAEN CENTENARY – ORGAN CONCERT
Olivier Messiaen, an organ composer was born 100 years ago and to mark this 100th anniversary, David Leigh and Tristan Russcher will present all his organ compositions throughout this year. The second concert is on Tues 13 May 2008 at 18.30 in St Patrick’s Cathedral. “L’Ascension” will be performed. Admission is free.

LIFE AS A JOURNEY OF FAITH – SLI EILE DEBATE
Sli Eile, the Jesuit youth organisation, is inviting to their 8th debate. This time the topic is “Life as a journey of faith” and the guest speaker is Noreen Mackey. The debate will take place on 13 May from 19:30-21:30 in the Belvedere Hotel, Great Denmark Street, Dublin 1. Noreen Mackey entered a Carmelite monastery in Ireland at the age of 18, but found life behind the grille so difficult that she left. A new spiritual encounter in Luxembourg led her back to the Carmelites, this time to a French monastery, but after 18 months, she returned again to the world. After a period of grieving, Mackey began to find meaning in her experience and understand its importance as part of her quest for God. Today, Noreen Mackey is legal adviser to the Competition Authority in Dublin, where she was one of the authors of the report into the Ansbacher affair. www.noreenmackey.com

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC CENTRE – SEMINAR
“AMP – A Meeting Place” is a series of cross-arts interaction seminars for composers, performers, painters, sculptors, animators, filmmakers, dancers and actors. Organised by the Contemporary Music Centre, the series, AMP, is designed to give musicians and artists the chance to interact, discuss, and learn about the ways in which they can impact on each other’s work. The format for each evening will include short
presentations by guest speakers, while also allowing the chance for open discussion.
The first seminar “Music & the Visual Arts”, which will look at the partnership between music and the visual arts, takes place on 13 May at 19:30 in Pravda, Lower Liffey Street, Dublin 1. Speakers will include artist Anthony Kelly, composers David Stalling and George Higgs, who will discuss his latest project The Coin Operated Vibrating Video Juke Bed. PARENTING WORKSHOPS @ DUNDRUM TOWN CENTRE
The Dundrum Town Centre is offering free parenting workshops on Thursdays from 11:00-12:00, in Frangos World Cuisine, located on Level 3. HUGH LANE GALLERY- LECTURE

CYCLING CAMPAIGN – ANNUAL LECTURE
The 2008 Dublin Cycling Campaign Annual Lecture will take place on Thursday 15 May at 20:00 in the Emmet Theatre in Trinity College Dublin. Dr. John Parkin from the University of Bolton will deliver his paper on “Planning for Pedals”. His talk will explore policies for promoting cycling, based on a UK study of cycle use for commuting. He’ll ask, what factors affect bicycle use? Gender, socio-economic class, income, ethnicity, infrastructure, weather, hilliness? He’ll explain policies of creating bicycle networks and consider the importance of accounting for the effort of cycling and the concept of ‘permeability’ of an area to cyclists. Admission is free.

EAMON MAHER – BOOK LAUNCH
Eamon Maher (Director of the National Centre for Franco-Irish Studies at the Tallaght Institute of Technology in Dublin) wrote the book “Jean Sulivan (1913-1980): La Marginalité dans la vie et l’œuvre” It is about the priest-writer Jean Sulivan, a relatively unknown entity in his native France, and will be launched on Thurs 15 May at 18:00 in the Alliance Française, 1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2.
