Event Guide 42: 3 Artist Exhibition, Language Recruitment, Poetry Now, Latin American Film Festival, Classic in Hugh Lane, Mad Hatters Tea Party, One City One Book
Hi all!
A week full of big events is coming to an end again. Politically a significant change in Ireland has been kick started on Thursday and newspapers, radio and TV will have weeks and weeks of fun with that. Most people that I know (including myself) think the developments are positive, but only time will tell.
Culturally the week saw a great concert and I am soooo not biased! :-)) “The Elvis Presley Story” with Kevin Doyle, The Way it Was Orchestra and the Graceland Gospel Choir (of which I am a part of) was performed in front of nearly 1000 people in the National Concert Hall and in addition to us having a great time on stage, it seemed that the people in the audience had a great time as well. :-)
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) reached a significant milestone as well: Everybody, we have exceeded 1000 members in our Event Guide community!!! Thanks to all of you for supporting the Event Guide. The funny thing is that only last night, in the National Concert Hall, I really was able to visualise how many people 1000 actually are. I can tell you it’s a hell of a lot of people!! Imagine, if we all went to an event together, we could fill the National Concert Hall. Next goal is to fill the RDS. ;-)
Unfortunately my request to you for suggestions regarding sponsorship for the Event Guide didn’t get any feedback. You can still let me know your suggestions, if not, I will have to make decisions on my own. :-O
And finally: The tickets for the Flamenco Workshop last week were won by Maurice Coyle. Thanks to Solo Flamenco (www.flamencoyalegria.net) for making them available.
For all the new subscribers, just a word about the content of this Event Guide: Every week I gather, list and describe all the FREE events in the Greater Dublin area that I can find. There are lots of good event websites (www.dublinks.ie, www.entertainment.ie. www.discoverireland.ie, www.dublinevents.com, www.indublin.ie) and some printed publications (InDublin and “the event guide”) that tell you about all types of events, but none of them focuses on FREE events. And since FREE events deserve a lot of advertisement, but often don’t have the funds and infrastructure to let people know, I decided to fill this gap with my “Dublim Event Guide (for Free Events).”

ACCESSORIES+PHOTOGRAPHY+MUSIC – EXHIBITION
“3 Artists, 3 Cultures, 1 Unique Exhibition” is the idea behind the Kalm Concepts exhibition, which is launched tonight with an event. Katie Stamou, who is part of the Dublin Event Guide Community, sent me this description “Kalm Concepts invite you to experience an exhibition unlike any other in Ireland today. With the combination of three unique talents, cultures and art forms, we offer an awakening to the creative senses from visual, sonic and down right eccentric! Singer songwriter, AnnMarie O’Grady (Dublin); Accessory Artist, Kathie Stamou (New York) and Photographer, Céline Leoni (Paris) look forward to introducing their artistic expertise in this unique setting.” The venue for the exhibition is Cobblers (4 Leeson Lane, Dublin 2), a little café off Lower Leeson Street (just 30 metres south of the junction with St. Stephen’s Green South and Earlsfort Terrace) that serves lunches, soups, pizzas, sandwiches and wraps, organic coffees and snacks. The events are
—Fri 04 April (18:00-20:30): Exhibition launch for special guests and friends (Kathie tells me that you won’t be sent home if you want to go to the launch :-), so send a mail asap to info@kalmconcepts.com and come tonight. If you can’t send a mail in time mention that you read about it in the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. I will try to go to the launch at 18:00 and maybe I will meet you there.
— Cobblers (www.cobblers.ie) is normally open Mon-Fri (08:00-17:00) but in Sun 06 April from 18:00-20:30 they will be open as well to allow for a public viewing of the exhibition.
— On Thur 10 April (20:30-22:30): Acoustic gig with Ann Marie O’Grady will take place in Cobblers. (Admission EUR 10) I am told, Cobblers is quite small, so make sure that you contact Kalm Concepts if you want to get tickets. You can find more information here: www.Kalmconcepts.com
During normal opening hours of Cobblers, Kathie and Céline’s creative work will also be on view from 04-17 April. Since it is a THREE artist exhibition, but a singer songwriter can’t be “exhibited” easily, at lunchtime every day Ann Marie O’Grady’s work will be played in the restaurant.
It took me a little while to get my head around the exhibition concept and Kathie had to help with further explanations, but I hope that my description explains it well. It sounds interesting, so go to one or some of the events if you get a chance!
WAGAMAMA DEAL
Every now and then I come across special deals and until now I didn’t include them the Event Guide. However, it was suggested to me to include them sometimes if they fit in the general context. And if the context is “going out and having a good time” then I should mention the special Wagamama Deal. It is only valid tonight (Friday), but I am sure I will come across more similar deals and with a bit of luck I will find out slightly earlier the next time. You can find a 2-for-1 voucher for Wagamama here:
www.wagamama.ie/emarketing/vouchers. Wagamama is the Asian restaurant underneath the Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre (coming from Grafton Street pass by the Gaiety Theatre and then watch out for the stairs down to the restaurant on your left). The food is good, the prices are reasonable and the style of the restaurant is very unique. Booking is no required (not even possible as far as I know), but you might have to queue for a little while. (Thanks to Brian Lenehan to point this offer out to me.)
GHOSTS OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED – EXHIBITION
Only until Saturday the Mermaid Arts Centre in Main Street in Bray (Co. Wicklow) is showing the photography exhibition “Ghosts of the Faithful Departed” by David Creedon from 07 March-05 April. “Between 1949 and 1989 over 800,000 people were forced to leave Ireland. By 1956 the population had fallen to 2.8 million the lowest ever recorded. The rural communities were decimated by the impact of emigration and those who stayed had to suffer hardship, isolation and were very dependent on money and clothes that were sent home by siblings or relatives living abroad. Many of those who stayed in this decade did so in silence as they watched family members and friend’s leave. Now in a new millennium these people have passed on and their homes stand as a monument to a bygone age. Title of ownership has now passed to far-flung relatives, and these houses presently lie deserted awaiting the return of owners whose dreams of coming home may never be realised.” The exhibition is a tribute to those who stayed, and those who left, and the difficulties they faced. Admission is free and the Mermaid Gallery is open Mon-Sat 10:00-18:00. (www.mermaidartscentre.ie)
ART IN THE LIFE WORLD – EXHIBITION
In the unusual setting of the old and disused Ballymun Swimming Pool an “Art in the Life World” Exhibition can be viewed from 29 Feb-12 April (Wed-Sun 13:00-18:00).
A disparate range of local, national and internationally renowned artists are brought together in Dublin to occupy, challenge and provoke in this changing part of the city.
www.artinthelifeworld.com/exhibition.html. It seems that admission to the exhibition is free.
LANGUAGE RECRUITMENT FAIR
On Fri+Sat (04/05 April) there is a language recruitment fair in the Gresham Hotel in O’Connell Street. If you are multi-lingual and are looking for a job, go to this fair! You can register (for free) on their website, but I would expect that they will let you in as well if you haven’t pre-registered. www.languagerecruitmentfair.ie
PILLS – SCIENCE GALLERY
The free PILLS exhibition in the Science Gallery will run until 12 April. On Fri a non-free event is provided to meet the people behind the exhibition: “PILLS: Meet the People Behind the Pills” on Friday 04 April at 19:00. You can join an informal conversation with Pharmacopoeia textile artist Susie Freeman and family doctor Liz Lee in the Science Gallery café. Tickets are EUR 5.00 (10% discount for members). Book tickets at www.sciencegallery.com/events
Exhibition admission is free and opening hours are 12:00-20:00 Tues-Fri and 12:00-18:00 Sat & Sun. The Science Gallery is closed on Mondays.
By the way, Gallery membership is free and apart from event discounts you can use the Gallery’s wireless Internet access for free as well, if you are a member.

I understand that it is intended to have a flag there so that people find each other easier. Watch out: As far as I remember, the Odeon charges 10 Euro or thereabouts to get in after a certain time in the evening. Check it out first.

Through out the day there will be opportunities to show off hats and costumes on the purpose built “Hatwalk” – strut your stuff to the sounds of the DLR Events DJ! Bring a picnic or buy some tea and cakes from the tuck shop and dine at the picnic tables under a tree covered in red & white check table cloths.

Did you get your free tickets for the Händel Festival? I don’t know if there are any left, but if you want to go to any of the events, you should try to get the tickets this weekend:
DUBLIN HÄNDEL FESTIVAL
The Dublin Händel Festival is taking place from Sun 13 April – Fri 18 April. The Dublin Händel Festival is an annual event that takes place every April in Temple Bar and in adjacent areas to bring to life the connections between Georg Friedrich Händel and the City of Dublin through a week long programme that celebrates the cultural riches of the 18th century in a modern and contemporary context. Händel composed his “Messiah” in the summer of 1741 and premiered it in Dublin on the 13 April 1742. Messiah is Händel’s most famous creation and is among the most popular works in Western choral literature and the very well-known “Hallelujah” chorus is part of Händel’s Messiah.
The festival will include a programme of FREE concerts, talks, tours, interactive activities and family events; including a full-length, performance of the Messiah in Christ Church Cathedral by the Christ Church Cathedral Choir and the Orchestra of St Cecilia and the “Messiah on the Street” performance by Our Lady’s Choral Society and the National Sinfonia, conducted by Proinnsías Ó Duinn beside the original site where the Messiah received its world premiere in 1742.
All events are free, but some require tickets! Tickets for all ticketed events will be available for collection from the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2 from Sat 29th March. Some events will “sell” out very fast, so make sure that you check the programme (www.templebar.ie/docs/handelfestival08.pdf) and that you get your tickets soon. The opening hours for the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre are Mon-Fri 09:00-17:30, Sat 10:00-17:30 and Sun 12:00-15:00.
And the ticket registration for this next event is still open for another bit:
BUDRISING STREET PARTY
BudRising are supplementing their forthcoming Spring schedule with a free outdoor Street Party that will take place in Dublin on 12 April. An area of the river at George’s Dock on Custom House Quay will be drained for the event, and a stage will be constructed – as well as a carnival area, a BodyTonic ToeJam area and another smaller stage – to mark the one-off event. Mike Skinner, aka The Streets will now headline this specially-constructed venue, instead of his mooted gig at the Olympia. Support comes from Mixmaster Mike, Maser and DJ Morgan. Tickets are free, but are allocated on a lottery basis. To be in with a chance of winning, you need to register at www.budweiser.ie now.
