Hi all!
I can’t write this Event Guide without saying something about what has happened in and around Kildare Street yesterday. The last 24 hours were hugely interesting if you are following the news and the political situation in Ireland. “Interesting” not because it was good or impressive, no, it was/is rather shocking and unbelievable. If you had any believe left in the ability of Irish politicians to run the country responsibly, it most likely is gone by now. We finally know that the next general election will be on 11 March, but if you expect everything to get better after the election, fasten the seat belt!
Brian Cowen is a dead-man walking and the whole government in is in bits. The vast majority of the parliament members in the governing parties (both Fianna Fail and the Greens) will not be there anymore and many have doubts if the replacements from other parties will be much better.
What should you do? Most importantly, DON’T ignore it! Even if politics bores you, make sure that you inform yourself, because it WILL affect you. So get passionate about your future and about who influences it! Get involved if you can and support others that are getting involved if you think they are good.
Most importantly, though, make sure that YOU take more control of your future. Politicians might set some (not necessarily a good) framework, and you will have to work around that if you want change.
[ad]
Some while ago I was at a seminar and one of the most important things that we identified as crucial for personal development and for making progress in any area is FEROCIOUS CURIOSITY! Talk to people, go to free or non-free events in the area that you are interested and read books and read more books and then read another few! :-)
I know that some of you tend to ignore the lectures that I mention here in the Event Guide, but have a look at them sometimes. The amount of knowledge you can get for free is amazing!
BTW: The people that contacted me being interested about learning how to set goals will hear from me soon! :-)

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a song! This week Orlaith niB, Pauline R, Marta T, Anna O donated money to help me cover the cost of the Event Guide and therefore help keeping the Event Guide going. Thanks a lot! You too are invited to help. You can spend as much as you can/want on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm and you can even set-up a yearly recurring donation of EUR 12, similar to a magazine subscription.
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) You can donate any amount you wish to help with or – as an option – you can now chose a yearly “subscription” on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm whereby a 12 Euro donation will automatically be carried out every year.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my bank, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week, I plan to go to the Cujo Family concert in the Button Factory on Saturday. On Sunday I will try to go to Kickstart in Dun Laoghaire and to the Dublin Flea Market. In the evening I will be at the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass, but if That was not on my list, I would try to get free tickets for the Jason Byrne performance in the Olympia. Check it out.
On Wednesday the NCI Sales Masterclass, the Jupiter Watch in Phoenix Park and the Brownbread Mixtapes tempt me! Too many good events at the same time! :-) On Thursday the Italian Piano concert sounds intriguing and the interview workshop is a Must Go event if you are looking for a job!

FOGHORNS GONE – DUBLIN BAY
Have you ever heard the foghorns across Dublin Bay on a foggy or misty day/night? It is an eerie and spooky sound, but at the same time it is comforting as well, because it confirms that you are not alone and that there is something somewhere that will be able to guide you. Unfortunately, though, if you have never heard them, you won’t get a chance anymore as the foghorns on Irish Lighthouses are a thing of the past. The Commissioners of Irish Lights has announced that all fog signals have been switched off on the basis that today’s technology makes them obsolete. Some disagreed, saying that small boats may not have GPS equipment and it may fail on larger ones, but the decision has been made. www.dublinpeople.com/content/view/4189/57/
50,000 WILL EMIGRATE?
The Economic and Social Research Institute has dreamt up the number of 50,000 people that will emigrate in 2011 and another 50,000 in 2012. I am not sure how they come up with these numbers, but it might be based on their expectation that 25,000 jobs will be lost this year. At the same time they are claiming that the economy is set to grow by 1.5% this year, with exports increasing by 6% and allegedly there will be a GDP growth of 2.25% next year. Unemployment is forecast to average 13.5% this year, dropping slightly to 13% next year. The 50,000 emigrants would be more than the 44,000 who left the country in 1989, the peak year for emigration in the 1980s. To be honest, I dare to disagree! I don’t think it will be 50,000 people because the situation is by far not as bleak as it was in 1989 and I hope for the initiative that people will take as suggested in the introduction to this newsletter. I have no plans to leave and if you are staying too, then there will be at least TWO people left. ;-) www.rte.ie/news/2011/0120/economy.html

GRUEL AND MERMAID CAFÉ CLOSED
I have never been in the Mermaid Café, but Gruel was a fascinating place. It was bizarre, surreal and cool at the same time. The service was never really overly friendly, but the food was VERY good. The whole experience was “different” and with that it was a unique place that will be missed. The owners of the two restaurants, which were next to each other in Dame Street have no criticised the “short-sighted” behaviour of landlords, which they say will force many city traders out of business and ruin the character of the capital. Mark Harrell and Ben Gorman, who first opened the Mermaid Cafe on Dame Street in 1996, paid 15,000 Irish Pound as a yearly rent for the Mermaid Café. The combined rent on the two restaurants at 68 and 69 Dame Street was EUR 190,000 when they closed. This is an absolutely mad increase and I am not surprised that it doesn’t make sense anymore to run a business under these conditions. Harrell and Gorman are now liquidating their company, the restaurants were closed on 23 Dec and all 30 employees were made redundant. If landlords continue like that many more shops and restaurants will have to close and the reason will NOT be “the economy”, but will be the greed of the developers, banks and other investors. Considering that they are the same people we are supplying with money through NAMA and the bank bailout (which we have to pay with our taxes), it is unbelievable that we are paying twice to the same gangsters! www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/finance/2011/0114/1224287488277.html
PSYCHOLOGY SURVEY – YOUR HELP IS NEEDED
Kate Lewis, a final year student of psychology in Trinity College, needs your help. For her project she needs many people to fill in a survey about emotional expression/ regulation and positive social behaviours. The survey is anonymous and confidential and it only takes about 5-10 min to complete. Can you please help Kate and fill in this online survey: www.surveygizmo.com/s3/439343/psychology-fyp-emotions BTW, there are some prices to win as well! ;-)
POLAND: GRANDPARENTS DAY

Babci (Grandmother Day) is on Friday and Dzie? Dziadka (Grandfather Day) on Saturday. www.answers.com/topic/national-grandparents-day#Poland
GOOD NEWS SECTION?
Last week I invited you to send me Good News. Unfortunately I didn’t get a single mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with GOOD NEWS in the subject of the mail. That means that you either are not that pushed about reading good news, or there are no good news or you didn’t read the Event Guide! :-) So, I am inviting you again. ;-)
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7500+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

AMAZING CITY CENTRE – DESIGNING DUBLIN – CIVIC OFFICES
An exhibition that was wonderfully compiled by the people in Designing Dublin and that was hugely popular will be shown once more. The exhibition is called “100 exciting things you did not know about the City Centre” and you will be surprised how many nuggets of interesting information and details you will find that you really didn’t know. The exciting things are a compilation of places, happenings, uses, stories, curiosities and feelings that Designing Dublin have heard from the 2000 people that we have spoken to so far. If you didn’t see the exhibition in Filmbase in November, you should take the opportunity to see it from 17-28 Jan in the Atrium of the Civic Offices at Wood Quay. BOOTS ON THE TAKE – DOUBLE THE PRICE THAN IN THE UK
Boots, the chemist chain, made headlines in recent weeks when they first announced that they would provide flu vaccination in Boots in Ireland and later, that they would provide the Morning-after-Pill in Ireland as well and without a prescription (www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/boots-to-offer-morning-after-pill-without-prescription-488778.html). You might have medical or moral concerns about one or the other issue, but in general, most people think it is a positive development that there is an alternative to an expensive and essentially unnecessary doctor’s visit in these two cases. Points for Boots! But then, one of the Sunday newspapers, the “Irish Mail on Sunday” compared prices and found out that Boots charges in both cases twice (!!) the price they charge in the UK for the same service. The flu vaccination is EUR 15.64 in the UK and EUR 30 in Ireland. (findarticles.com/p/news-articles/mail-on-sunday-london-england-the/mi_8003/is_2011_Jan_9/boots-double-swine-flu-jab/ai_n56632614/) The morning after pill is EUR 22.17 in the UK and EUR 45 in Ireland. Ok, we would have expected some higher prices, we expect to be ripped off. But TWICE is definitely too much, there is NO justification for it!

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
