Hi all!

Thanks for all the positive feedback for last week’s introduction to this newsletter. Every now and then I spend a bit of time talking about other things than just events etc. Last week (in case you didn’t read it) I was talking about how we give things meaning and therefore have a big impact on feeling happy or unhappy AND on achieving our goals or failing. I suggested as well that I would maybe run a workshop/seminar that will teach you how to set Goals correctly so that you will achieve them successfully. A number of people did send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject GOALS and if you are interested as well, please send a mail too. The number is just at the edge between YES, I will run the course now and NOT YET, i.e. I will run it another time.

Despite all the good news that we prefer, there was some seriously bad news last week for any Event Fan: The Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Culture 2011 is cancelled and will definitely not take place this year. MAYBE a significantly downscaled festival will take place again in 2012, but I wouldn’t put money on that! In the Dublin Event Guide Facebook group (we are nearly 3000 people there!) I promised that I would tell you a lot more details about this development and would reveal some background information that you otherwise won’t find. Go to the “This is Odd” Section for my analysis and all the details of this bad event news!

We are getting back into full swing with the events, there are a lot more taking place this week. A few that I want to point out particularly are the Dalkey Good Health Fair on Sat+Sun and the Career Zoo on Sat+Sun (if you are looking for a career change). I will definitely go to one of the two.
In addition I will be most likely in the Mint Bar on Sat evening to hear the brilliant Ratzingers, one of my most favourite bands. On Wednesday I recommend the Inn Jokes in Kilmainham, a great comedy night. Unfortunately I won’t be able to make it myself, but I expect it will be good.
On Thursday I will probably be at the Gooseberry Awards and if you are there, find me! ;-) How? You will find a way if you want. Last night I was in Cactus Jacks in the Italian Quarter and Emily, who works there, asks me out of the blue: “Are you Joerg who writes the Dublin Event Guide!?”. ;-) She definitely caught me by surprise, but it was a nice surprise! :-)

Have you ever lost something and desperately wanted it back? OR maybe you have found something are a very honest and considerate person, but had no clue how to get it back to the rightful owner? LUIGI MALONES IN LIQUIDATION
Another restaurant is seemingly closing. The Luigi Malones chain with five outlets country-wide in Cork, Dublin and Limerick had receiver appointed following a meeting with creditors on 06 Jan. Luigi Malones Temple Bar was located just behind the Central Bank and seemed to focus on tourists in Temple Bar. I have to admit that I was surprised for a long time that they were able to survive. I ate there once many years ago, so I can’t judge the quality of the food, but it certainly was in the upper price category, considering that an EARLY BIRD menu charged EUR 19.95 for 2 courses and EUR 24.95 for 3. HAITI PHOTOS WITH A DIFFERENCE – PHOTO EXHIBITION
The Children’s development charity Plan Ireland, with whom hundreds of Irish people sponsor children in Haiti is commemorating the one year anniversary of the disaster in Haiti with the photo exhibition “Through Our Own Eyes”. Haitian teenagers have taken the photographs themselves, documenting their nation and their story. The exhibition will take place in the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, South William Street, Dublin 2 from 10-24 Jan and opening hours are Mon-Fri: 10:00-18:00, Thurs: 10:00-20:00, Sat: 09:00-18:00, Sun 12:00-18:00. RPA-LUAS ART COMPETITION – RUA RED
The RPA-Luas Art Competition is a yearly exhibition which is taking place since 2007. This year’s competition invited artists aged 16 years or over to submit artwork based on the theme of “Luas taking you to the Heart of Dublin”. Submissions were accepted in any art form from visual or written work, digital reproductions of paintings, sculpture, graphic design, comic design, photography, poetry, short stories and comedy writing. The exhibition in Rua Red (Civic Square Tallaght Dublin 24) displays the winning entry and eleven runners-up from this year’s competition using a range of mediums. The winning entry is displayed on all Luas Stops and Luas trams, and is the cover and a month image in the RPA-Luas 2011 Calendar. AWARE FUNDRAISING RUN – PHOENIX PARK

The Aware Christmas 10k Run was meant to take place on 11 Dec, but had to be postponed due to the snow. It is now taking place this weekend. THE METALS – SLI NA SLAINTE LAUNCH – DUN LAOGHAIRE
Sat 15 Jan: 12:00. County Hall, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire.
As part of the Irish Sports Council’s National Walking Event, a new Irish Heart Foundation Slí na Sláinte walking route, ‘The Metals’, will be launched in Dún Laoghaire. On this day every County in Ireland will have a similar walking event to cater for all levels of fitness, but in particular those looking to start exercising again. The Metals Slí na Sláinte route is 3km in length (6km return) from Dún Laoghaire Pier to Dalkey. The new Slí na Sláinte will be launched by a walk along the route and the unveiling of the route map board, followed by light refreshments. FIRST FORTNIGHT – ARTS BASED MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS
First Fortnight is an arts-based mental health awareness project that happens in the first two weeks of every year. In the second year of this event, Amnesty International Ireland is involved as well and on Sat 15 Jan at 13:30 a panel discussion on mental health prejudice and discrimination will take place in the Button Factory (Temple Bar). Panellists are Colm O’Gorman (Executive Director, Amnesty International Ireland), Liam Hayes (GAA star, journalist and author), Dr Siobhán Barry (College of Psychiatry, Ireland), Colm Tobin (Author) plus special guests. The question that will be discussed is “Have attitudes and behaviours towards people with mental health
problems really changed?” Admission is free.

DUN LAOGHAIRE FESTIVAL OR WORLD CULTURE CANCELLED
I got the news last weekend. A friend (Alicia) found out from her friend (Edith) and told me. This was the initial article uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20110107/tuk-too-successful-festival-scrapped-e1cd776.html I have to admit that I was shocked! The Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Culture is, no WAS the absolute highlight of my “Event Year” and it is one of the biggest influences that got me to write this Event Guide. For the last 7 or 8 years out of the 10 festival years, I made sure that I have NOTHING else planned for that weekend and I have brilliant memories. Last year the odd move from end of August to end of July happened and I sensed that something was up. There was absolutely no good justification for the move of the Festival date. Then at the end of the Sunday last year, the Artistic Director of the last 10 years, Jody Ackland, declared from the stage that she was leaving the team, which surprised me and later I found out that at the same time the “General Manager” Olga Barry and other people were leaving as well.
Now that the sh*t hit the fan, more and more news is emerging and it seems that the team managing this event had absolutely no clue how to manage an event. Because allegedly the money situation was like this:
2007 Budget: EUR 400,000 with a deficit of EUR 300,000
2008 Budget: EUR 550,000 with a deficit of EUR 400,000
2009 Budget: EUR 500,000 with a deficit of EUR 90,000
2010 Budget: EUR 500,000 with a deficit of EUR 500,000
If someone consistently overspends so significantly, they have not much clue about “managing”, I guess. :-(
10 years go the then county manager Derek Brady was approached by Jody Ackland with the idea and she was given a budget of EUR 20,000. Derek Brady is long gone, but Jody Ackland seemingly got more and more budget and the festival was a success, a HUGE success. However, it seems that the people that should be in charge of the money (the county manager and the councillors) were incapable of reigning the Event Team in and to control them.
I heard that in June 2010 a review group was formed (finally) to check the operation and the same Derek Brady was heading this review group and in the end recommended that it should be cancelled.
I can see the financial problems, but the part that I don’t get is how Dun Laoghaire. Rathdown could wait so long until they took action AND how it was possible to overrun so disastrously. It seems to me that the councillors of Dun Laoghaire entirely disliked the same festival that put Dun Laoghaire on the international culture map and possibly were more than happy to end it. What an ignorance! Yes, it seems that apart from through the pubs there was not much money generated for Dun Laoghaire and with councillors being typically very very shortsighted, it was the easiest to stop all. But that could have been changed!
They claim that there will be smaller events in 2011 and that in 2012 a new smaller and more sustainable will take place, but I have my doubts about that.
Oddly it seems that the same people that made the festival so successful (more than 200,000 people came to Dun Laoghaire last year) killed it with their incompetence and when they departed, the councillors not only saw the debts but as well panicked because nobody had a clue how to run a festival. – There was a time when I thought Jody Ackland was brilliant. But I am not too sure anymore about that. How could she not see that the Festival just got out of proportion? But as I said the ULTIMATE responsibility lies with the County Manager Owen Keegan who wasn’t asble to control and with the councillors.
What should they have done this year? Stop everything APART from the main stage at Newtownsmith Green. Run the festival smaller in 2011 and review what can be done for 2012, but under no circumstances they should have cancelled the festival. Running only the main stage would have been relatively cheap and controllable in cost AND crowd. Here are some more reports:
