Hi all!

Snow, snow, snow! I think that describes the last week best. We NEARLY have forgotten about stuff like IMF, Budget and debts and that is a good thing. Were I am at the moment, I see a lovely picturesque Winter Wonderland outside and it could hardly be more beautiful. Sure, if you have to the office everyday or drive long distances etc you saw the other side of the weather as well, but let’s be honest, there IS something magical about snow and I hope you will get a chance every now and then to get a glimpse of it.

Hey, you have heard from me yesterday already. Did you read the mail? You should! :-) It is your personal invitation to the Dublin Event Guide Christmas Party. There won’t be a free bar and free food, but admission is free! ;-) And it will be as good as you will make it, so I expect it will be REALLY great! We will meet in Dandelion Café Bar at St. Stephen’s Green and the event will go ahead no matter how bad the weather will be. This week I will go on a tour of Christmas Markets on Saturday and/or Sunday. Fitzwilliam Square, Docklands and maybe as well Belvedere College and Smithfield. On Saturday evening? Guess, where I will be? I will meet you in Dandelion! ;-) On Sunday the National Museum in Kildare Street has an interesting Christmas re-enactment and I would love to see that.
During the week, I will try to go to the “Your Buisness Day” on Thursday and to the EYP Christmas Party next Friday.

YOGA CLASSES – Free TASTER CLASS
Svetlana contacted me during the week and offered free places on yoga courses and she was very generous! She is offering 9 places in Yoga courses in total, which means that for each of the dates Tues 07, 14 + 21 she is offering three places. CHRISTMAS FM – RADIO STATION
Like in the previous two years, Christmas FM was launched again a few days ago. On FM 89.9 and on the Internet (christmasfm.ie/) you can listen to Christmas Songs 24 hours a day. All people working at the station are volunteers and the money raised in the time until Christmas will go to the charity Barnardos. Once we have arrived at Christmas, the station will disappear again, so enjoy it while it lasts. They have a free iPhone app as well, if you are interested.

RTE CHILDREN’S PROGRAMME – TICKETS AVAILABLE
A programme for RTÉ’s The Den will be filmed on Friday 10 Dec from 17:30-21:00 in The Helix, Glasnevin. The show is a cross between X-Factor and High School Musical for kids aged between 8 and 12 and is a very energetic show with a live band and the dance troop Raw Edge (who were on Channel 4 last year). There are some free tickets available (less than 50 out of an original pool of 800) and if you are fast you can secure them for your kids. The children have to be 8-12 years old and the audience is kids-only! To secure a free ticket call (01) 864 1444 as soon as possible.

BAD NEWS FOR VODAFONE CUSTOMERS ON HOLIDAYS
Until 24 Nov 2010 you only paid 99 cent per day for Data Roaming on your Vodafone Pay as You Go phone. A brilliant price that was – as it should be when travelling from Vodafone to Vodafone – the same as at home in Ireland. However, quietly and sneakily Vodafone has increased this now to a new price of EUR 2.99 per day. Hey, that is a whopping 300% of the old price! CRAZY! For a lousy 50 Mbyte! I use a Pay as You Go phone for data when I am abroad and will definitely look for another service provider now. www.vodafone.ie/internet-broadband/internet-on-your-mobile/abroad Even if you are using a bill pay phone, it seems that the DAILY surcharge is now EUR 2! – I didn’t get a chance to check all other service provider yet, but watch out for significantly higher charges if you are planning holidays over Christmas and intend to access the Internet.

POINT VILLAGE CHRISTMAS MARKET CANCELLED
You should have read it here before, because I wrote about it about it last week, but in case you missed it, please note that the Point Village Christmas Market, which was advertised in a big way though lots of online channels, is cancelled. It seems that the organisers could not assure the traders that there would be sufficient business and this is no surprise to anyone who has ever looked at a map of Dublin and has seen how far out the Point Village Market is. MORE RESTAURANT CLOSURES
I wish I could report about openings and launches here, but there still seems to be more closures than launches. This one will be old news for some of you, I am not the fastest at times when it comes to tracking the status of bars and restaurants: About 3 weeks ago N ude Café (this name will get me into trouble with Spam filters again. :-S) closed its doors in Suffolk Street, after all other branches had closed already bit by bit earlier. The café was known for fresh organic produce, smoothies and vegetarian food and was owned by Bono’s brother, Norman Hewson. JELLY – WORKING TOGETHER – AMWORKS

Jelly (workatjelly.com) is a casual working event. It’s taken place in over a hundred cities where people have come together (in a person’s home, a coffee shop, or an office) to work for the day. INK SLINGERS – CREATIVE WRITING HOUR – WRITERS’ CENTRE
The Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour takes place every Friday at 13:00 at the Irish Writers’ Centre. Established and still brand new! This year’s Docklands Christmas Market in the IFSC, next to the chq Building will take place in the 4th or 5th year, but this year ALL will be different. STORYTELLING WORKSHOP

For the first year, a second Christmas Market will take place on Fitzwilliam Square, the private square in Fitzwilliam Street, Dublin 2, not too far from Merrion Square. 70 stalls will make up this new and promising Christmas Market. CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL CHRISTMAS MARKET
On Sat 04, 11 + 18 Dec from 10:00-17:00 there will be a Christmas Market in the crypt of Christ Church Cathedral and since Christ Church Cathedral is rarely letting anybody in for free, the fact that Admission is free is a big surprise. www.cccdub.ie

CHOCOLATE CHRISTMAS – TEMPLE BAR
A number of events of this weekend’s Temple Bar Chocolate Christmas Festival were meant to take place today. Due to the weather all Truffle Making Workshops have been cancelled and the Outdoor Movie Screening (It’s a Wonderful Life) has been re-scheduled for Sat 18 Dec at 20:00. MUSICAL CHRISTMAS – MUSIC MAKER EVENT
On Sat 04 and Sun 05, Music Maker, the instrument and music shop in 29 Exchequer Street will run some helpful educational or informational sessions to help potential Christmas Present shoppers who don’t know there way around instruments with their decisions. And the whole event is at the same time a fundraiser for the Dublin Simon Community. So if you’re buying for a musician and have no idea where to start, go to the free introductory demos to Drums, Guitars (electric), DJ gear and Synths, Keyboards and Acoustic guitars run by teachers of the Music Maker music school.
In addition there will be performances of the live bands Túcan and Gypsies on the Autobahn on Sat 04 Dec. On Sunday the introductions are repeated and there will be Christmas Carols sung in the shop.

The organisers who are behind the Dublin Flea Market have organised a Christmas Market for this weekend in the Smithfield Area. The market will be on from 04-05 Dec from 12:00-19:00. The exact location? Well, it ain’t easy: It’s above the Chinamarket, beside Flo’s garage, just close to the Smithfield Luas stop. Theres also a Dublin Bikes depot accross from the building. I have no clue where that is, but a map on dublinflea.blogspot.com/ suggests that the street is called “Haymarket”.

THE PIPE: ROSSPORT AND THE CORRIB GAS PROJECT (DISCUSSION)
On Sat 04 Dec at 13:30, Director Risteard Ó Domhnaill, who has spent five years filming the people of Rossport and their response to the Corrib Gas Project, will be joined by Terence Conway (Shell to Sea), John Monaghan (Pobol Cill Choman/Rossport Community Spokesperson), Fergus Cahill (Irish Offshore Operators Association) and others to discuss the production of the documentary and the impact of the Corrib gas line on the Rossport community. The discussion will be chaired by journalist Lorna Siggins (author of Once Upon a Time in the West: The Corrib Gas Controversy). On Sat 04 Dec at 14:00 in the Gresham Hotel in O’Connell Street, the first meeting of a new Democracy Group, called “Second Republic” will take place. “Second Republic” seeks political reform in Ireland and demands a National Convention that will re-examine the institutions of politics in Ireland (the Oireachtas, the President, the Government, the electoral system) and freshly revisit the entire constitution from the preamble down to the very last article. The people behind “Second Republic” are ordinary citizens and the organisation is not aligned with any political party. BUDGET DAY
Tuesday 07 Dec is Budget Day in Ireland. The 2011 Budget will be announced and it is expected that it won’t be a pretty sight. Everybody expects more serious cuts and I unfortunately don’t think we will be disappointed with out expectation. The Irish Times, RTE and many other newspapers and media outlets will have Budget websites and will report about the Budget Speech which typically takes place in the afternoon. The news will be full and there will be calculators available online that will allow you to calculate the impact on your own salary. Watch out for all the news, it is an important announcement and will most likely affect all of us.
Expect protest marches on the day and in the day afterwards. No protest march that is organised by a non-party-political or non-extremist organisation has been announced yet.

“CULCHIE DAY”
The 08 Dec is an odd day in Ireland. It is a catholic holy day (Feast of Immaculate Conception) and traditionally people from the Irish Country side came and still come to Dublin to do their Christmas shopping. So the day is called “Culchie Day” by some. In modern times the day doesn’t have the same prominence anymore than it had, but you will still (weather permitting) see more people in the City Centre. This might have something to do as well that Primary Schools still close on that day (despite the fact that the Catholic Church has moved most Holy Days to the weekend after the day). ;-)

FAMILY FUN DAY – CITY CENTRE
With Children being off school, Dublin City is inviting to a Family Fun Day that is targeted at children: See Dublin through your children’s’ eyes – a magical wonderland where anything could happen. Your family will enjoy the festivities for young and old. Come see the Lord Mayor officially open the Live Animal Crib at the Mansion House. MOVING WORLDS FESTIVAL
From 08-11 Dec the Festival “Moving Worlds: Cinemas of Migration” will be taking place. It is a collaboration between FOMACS (Forum on Migration and Communication), EUNIC (European Union National Institutes of Culture), Alliance Française, British Council, Goethe-Institut, Instituto Cervantes and the Austrian Embassy. The programme contains contemporary documentaries and drama films from different countries and a selection of masterclasses, workshops and special events with filmmakers and digital media practitioners. FERN FEVER – LECTURE – BOTANIC GARDENS

DUBLIN AIRPORT WASTING YOUR MONEY?!
Advertisement, I learned is to attract customers or to keep customers. But that assumes that your customers have the choice to go elsewhere and you want to stop them. If your customers have absolutely no choice then advertisement is a total waste of money. Last time I checked, the airline I sued told me where to show up. I couldn’t decide at what gate I will enter the plane. Maybe the Dublin Airport Authority still has to learn that, but the same applies to the use of Terminals. Passengers can NOT choose! So, why oh why did the DAA then waste EUR 500,000 on this TV advertisement www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdjLBXlieI0 that was only shown on RTE and TV3, NOT anywhere outside of Ireland. The most annoying thing about this is that You and Me are paying for this totally superfluous ad through the charges that we pay to the airlines we use. The huge amount of EUR 500,000 was paid to an advertisement agency after a tender process.
